Hey Y'all,
I'm sending out letters to local Long Island leaders to tell them
a bit about ThisLandIsOurLand, in the hopes of establishing a concert
or a few concerts sometime over the Summer of 2006.
I've also been doing a little research on locales for a concert in
the Spring of 2006 in Boston or Brookline. The Brookline Public
Library which a few of you guys suggested, requires the submission of
audition recordings for the 6 spots for the following year. The
deadline for the 2006-07 year is February 28, 2006, so perhaps it
might be best to submit a tape for the following year, or find
another venue in the meantime.
I was talking with a vocalist friend of mine who suggested the
Arlington St. Church, the one that is on the corner of Arlington at
the Public Garden. It might be a good locale, and I think we'd have
a shot, 1) since the music director is a BU alum who is big on New
Music. Here is a link to their website:

http://www.ascboston.org/music/musicstaff.html

Let me know what you guys think. Hope all is going well for
everyone.

Hey you guys,
Below is the e-mail I received from Dean Howard, of the Tipitina's
Organization. I'm glad the received it, I was a little worried... :)
Hope all is well with you guys.
On another note, I was doing a lot of brainstorming, and I was
pondering the idea of doing a series of concerts on Long Island, my
original habitat, including several of them that could be sponsored or
presented by This Land Is Our Land. As it was I was thinking of doing
an a contemporary viola recital at somepoint over the summer. From
the research I've been doing, there is a huge void of contemporary
music on Long Island- outside of the little done at SUNY Stony Brook
and C.W. Post. Let me know what you guys think.

Greg,

I'll be sending you a hard copy of recognition for your efforts in
helping our Foundation. In the meanwhile, I wanted to let you know
that we received your package including the $300 check from the
Katrina Benefit Konzert at This Land Is Our Land put together.

Thanks so much for helping us further our mission of helping the
musicians and artists that were affected by the hurricane. The hard
copy will include more information of how the money being donated is used.

Best,

Greg and All,

Perhaps the Bay Area would be a better idea for
Concert #2?

I know it is far away, but we could keep our eyes open
for some really cheap flights. For me, it is not all
that much more expensive to fly to SF than it is to
drive to Boston. Since we have members from all over
the country and want to build an even bigger
membership, I think it makes sense to give concerts in
as many different locations as possible.

This next one should be to raise money for the group.

Hey y'all,
I wanted feedback on what locations you guys would find to be good
for another ThisLandIsOurLand Concert in the spring. I'm thinking a
good time frame would be the end of March or early April in 2006, and
probably again having it in Boston. I was thinking maybe looking into
the St. Paul St. Church in Brookline, or the Brookline Public
Library. I'd probably need to book something soon, so let me know
what your thoughts are.
Also, what can be done about the Mission Statement. Can we start
going over it?

Best,

Hey Everyone!

This Friday (November 4th @ 7pm), I am premiering my new piece for solo bass, "Sex Blues".  It is strictly instrumental in nature (just me, a bass, and probably some whiskey), and I think it's a little *musically *raunchy, a little rough, and most certialy sincere solo blues - if you're into that kind of thing - like a Bach cello suite, but "dirtier" and musically "sexual" (don't worry Mom, I keep my clothes on!).  As a member of the the Bay Area Composers' Circle, my piece will be featured amongst those of many other fresh young and highly talented composers.

I hope some of you can make it.  It should be a great concert.  Cheers!  -Ian

In regards to the article I sent earlier, I recommend that you try
contacting your Representative, and also the Chairman of the
Committee on Education and the Workplace- John Boehner, a Republican
from Ohio. That article is below as well.

Hey you guys,
I wanted to let you know that the money we raised at the KatRita
Konzert on October 16th, an overwhelming sum of $300, has been sent
to the Tipitina's Foundation, an Artist Assistance group in New
Orleans that has been a leader with Artist Relief, helping to find
missing musicians, aiding homeless artists and providing
instruments, music and necessities to those who have lost
everything. Bravo to all of you, you've all done a great job!
We need to start thinking of our next steps, perhaps a few
concerts in the spring, Boston, Baltimore, San Francisco? We also
need to iron out our mission statement and get a real website
going. Any thoughts?

PS- an interesting article in BU's Daily Free Press:

Federal bill may cut aid programs
Congress mulls financial aid cuts of more than $14 billion
By Cassandra Miller
Published: Wednesday, October 26, 2005
Article Tools: Page 1 of 3

The U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workplace will draft a
bill today proposing $7.5 billion in budget cuts to federal student
aid programs -- which, in addition to previous cuts, would total
more than $14 billion -- and would be the largest-ever cuts to
education.

These cuts are part of the budget reconciliation process Congress
goes through annually to find money in federal mandatory programs to
try to fill the national deficit. Congress has set a goal of using
about $35 billion to fill the national deficit, and the bulk of that
money will come from student aid programs.

Several lobbyists and student advocates feel the disproportionate
amount Congress is extracting from federal student loans is making
students unfairly bear the burden of the nation's debt.

"There is a raid on student loan programs," said Student Aid
Alliance representative David Warren. The SAA is a group of
education organizations that has formed the coalition to "Stop the
Raid on Student Aid" in response to the proposed budget cuts.

Although many students do not yet know about the significance of
federal student loans to this year's reconciliation process, student
advocacy groups spread across the country are protesting the
unprecedented cuts. The University of Massachusetts-Amherst has been
an active participant in the coalition against the proposed cuts.

Senior Sean Bliss, Senate speaker for the UMass Student Government
Association, said the SGA passed a resolution for Rep. John Olver (D-
Mass.) to oppose the cuts.

Bliss said the cuts would make it hard for a lot of needy students
to stay in school because they would have to find other ways to pay
for their education.

"Lots of students have to work ridiculous hours in order to pay for
school ... and then there's the time you have to set aside for
studying," he said. "Some of my friends question if they are going
to have to take a semester off to work to pay for school.

"The majority of students at UMass receive financial aid and a lot
of kids are on the cusp," Bliss said. "The cuts make a difference in
whether students will continue to attend university. I think that if
more students knew about it, there would be more reaction."

Congressmen have recently felt the reaction from students calling
them, visiting them and passing resolutions.

"There's been a great student response," said Jasmine Harris,
legislative director of the United States Student Association.

The USSA held a national day of action on Oct. 19 when students from
35 states made more than 4,000 contacts with members of Congress.

"Because of the contacts, students are making it hard for Congress
to vote in favor of the cuts," Harris said. "They put faces to
numbers."

The USSA is part of the "Raid on Student Aid" campaign that is
trying to make students aware of the looming legislation so they can
act against it. It encourages students be a part of the campaign by
having student governments pass resolutions, making lobby visits,
writing letters to the editor or calling their Congressmen.

Today is the second time this month that student advocacy groups
like the USSA and SAA are organizing mass phone calls to Congressmen
to send the message that students do not want the budget
reconciliation to pass.

The toll-free phone number the Student Aid Alliance set up in the
mid-1990s for students across the country to connect with their
Congressmen when former House speaker Newt Gingrich proposed to cut
$20 billion from student aid has recently been reconnected.

SAA representative David Warren said not a single dollar was cut in
1995 after 100,000 students called their Congressmen to complain.

The Higher Education Act, the lone piece of legislation governing
all federal higher education programs, is being put on the fast
track to the House and having changes made to it because of the
mutual redefinition of the nature of student loans outlined in both
pieces of legislation.

The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, compounded with the
reauthorization of the Higher Education Act and the budget
reconciliation process, have created a "perfect storm atmosphere,"
said Becky Timmons, the director of government relations for the
American Council of Education.

A small portion of the money cut from federal student loans is
proposed to go toward relief for the hurricane that devastated the
gulf coast.

However, the majority of money will go to support tax cuts and
reduce the national deficit.

"The issue for us is that they're extracting $18 billion [including
pension cuts] from federal funds and instead of reapplying it to
students, it's going other places," Timmons said. "At a time when
students need an increase in grant aid, Congress is instead choosing
to take more money out of student loans than anything else in the
budget."

The cuts to student aid account for one-third of the total
reconciliation savings Congress is proposing. Other mandatory
programs, including Medicaid and Social Security, are also facing
cuts.

"There is nothing about reconciliation people are really happy
about," Timmons said. "But no one in higher education felt it
reasonable that student loans pay for one-third of total
reconciliation savings."

After the House Committee on Education and the Workplace proposes
the budget reconciliation bill, it will be compared with the
Senate's bill.
Congress will vote on the cuts shortly after Thanksgiving.

But the legislation can still be stopped, opponents of the measure
say.

"If we can get either chamber to vote down budget reconciliation,
then there's no going back to the drawing boards," Harris
said. "There'll be no tax cuts and no changes to the Higher
Education Act this time and we'll have a chance at changing the
Higher Education Act to benefit students."

I send this link mainly because of the blatant disregard to the arts
that Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has for state sponsored
support of the arts. A 35% cut is obscene, and I'd say more obscene
than Benigni doing a strip tease on an Italian news program.

Hey everyone,
I wanted to just let you guys know that last night's Katrina Konzert
was a huge success! We raised about $300, and had at least 40 people
there, not including musicians. Anthony Green's "Preludismus" and
Robert Bonotto's "Valse Caribini" were spectacular, and all the
musicians were phenominal! Thanks again to everyone for all your help!

My next question is- where do we go from here, and what do we do next?

Hey Y'all,
I have rehearsal spaces for Saturday and Sunday. Saturday it's going to be

to be too small, I'll try to switch that, since the Marshall Room is open later

If I pull a rabbit out of my ass and it has a ticket for me to Boston, I'll be there with bells on.....but the truth is that I'm covering for my boss at work (who is actually in Southie for the next 2 weeks visiting his family.....small world), and would have a very difficult time getting away as I NEED the $$$$.  If I had $200 for a ticket, I'd do it in a flash, but that's like my SBC bill alone.....let alone rent.....

*note to all East Coasters thinking of moving to SF:  EXPENSIVE!!!!!  AMAZING!!!!!  CRAZY EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!  Culturally, its second only to NYC, but in terms of cultural richness per-capita, SF is the best city in the US, hands down!!!!!

IAN!

Someone from Berkelee responded to an ad I put on
craigslist, so maybe he can do it.

But it would be great to have YOU.  If you fly in,
I'll come pick you up.  I'm pretty sure we could find
a bass for you to use at BU.  I just checked Orbitz
and there is a Sat-Mon flight on United for $193...

Greg:

Glad you got the posters. I felt a bit egocentric putting my name on't.

I'm making the parts (and a few corrections) now.

I'm at the back theatre tomorrow (Columbus Day) from 10 am - 7 pm if you have
any questions. I'm going to work on the programme next.

Hi everyone,
I have parts for the Ives- Largo Cantabile. Ruby, who is getting
which part? Who do we have to work with? Also, there is a strong
possibility to get a French Horn player on the concert, details on
what she's playing either tomorrow or Tuesday. She'd be doing
something for solo horn or with piano.
I also picked up the scores for the Valse Caribini, it looks like a
really fun piece. Kudos Robert, and also nice job with the posters,
they came out awesome! For those of you in Boston, I'm gonna need
help distributing them and hanging them up.
To Sarah and Ruby, I will mail your parts first thing on Tuesday
morning, and will send it 2-day priority, so that it can get to you by
Thursday. I think that's it for now.

-Greg

PS- Happy Columbus Day!

Ian,
There are right-wing Republicans around SanFrancisco?  That in itself is
amazing!  Best of luck on your Katrina Konzert, let us know how that turns out.
If there is a way to spring out to Boston, that would rock, I'd offer you room
at my place, as tough as it might be, it would be worth it!
On 2nd thought, I do know of a right-wing violinist out there, but she's in
San Jose, a SFC alum though.   :)  Great friend of mine, Erica Wong, you might
know her.

Hey all,

Usually I'm ecstatic about announcing the premieres of new compositions I've done, but I'm ever-so-slightly reluctant this time around.  I don't know why that is.  I've never written for a "trained" singer before, i.e., not me.....so I think I'm just nervous...

This afternoon (Sunday, October 9th @ 5pm), soprano Tamra Paselk is premiering my new piece "Song" - with text by Allen Ginsberg.  Its set for soprano, piano and small string orchestra...  I'll be conducting, which is probably part of the nervousness (I'm fine when someone else is conducting, or if I'm conducting someone else's music!!!).  It should be a great performance, and is for a great cause (Hurricane Katrina relief effort)....

Admission is free but donations are accepted....  We're at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (1201 Ortega Street @ 19th Ave, SF) in Hellman Hall, and the more money we raise, the more I'll feel better, as the fundraiser is our MAIN objective....

I hope ya'll can make it!  Cheers!  -I

Hey Ruby,
What about the Bartok, when will that be rehearsed? Also, Anna, is it
possible to rehearse a few movements of the Bartok earlier in the week? That is
if the idea of doing a few movements of them is still viable.

Agreed, Ian. In the personal biography one of his patrons wrote of him,
either "The Naked Side of Genius" or "The Dark Side of Genius" -- I don't
remember
what the title was, they're both crummy titles -- Bartok was desperately
homesick for his native Hungary while in the States, and I don't think he'd
appreciate his being yoked into being American at all. Donyahni and Bloch, on
the
other hand, embraced this country --both wrote musical works extolling the
place.

Looks great, Robert!!

Maybe all first names or no first names for the
composers- e.g. remove "John" or add "Charles,
Rebecca, Arvo, Anthony and Bela"

Also, it would be good to double-check the title with
Anthony Green- toriant@...- I'm pretty sure it is
"Prelude" but not 100%.

thanks for doing this,
-Ruby

Someone from Berkelee responded to an ad I put on
craigslist, so maybe he can do it.

But it would be great to have YOU. If you fly in,
I'll come pick you up. I'm pretty sure we could find
a bass for you to use at BU. I just checked Orbitz
and there is a Sat-Mon flight on United for $193...
