Hey everyone,
It looks like we can get backing for media work on the August 26th
Concert, and it looks like it will end up being in the Vail-Leavitt
Music Hall in Riverhead, NY. I got estimates from other theatres,
including a much larger hall a little closer to New York City, (in a
town called Patchogue,) where they were booked for the summer and
would want about $4000-5000, depending on the day of the week. After
hearing that, $400-$500 sounds reasonable. (Granted their hall is
much bigger than the Vail-Leavitt.) But yeah, the Long Island
Environmental Voters Forum will help us out with media work, (and
probably paying for it, too...) I'll work on getting backing from the
League of Women's Voters, or at least getting their support on this,
not to mention the "Poets Against the War ensemble."
That's it for now!
-Greg
As you guessed from the recent posts, they (we) are looking for a venue someplace in Boston, and sometime before school's out, for some sort of a concert (If you attended the Katrina one, you know what its general makeup and focus is). At the moment we don't have a space or date. (Besides the Arlington Street Church, Greg tried, for instance, the Brookline Library -- they're booked a *year* in advance).
I'm an older composer member of the group, and as an actor I mentioned TLIOL's name in a theatre programme, & got a letter from a harpist/teacher at Boston Conservatory asking about us; I answered by email (hoping we could link up with them, either by way of performers or performing space) and haven't heard a word. So (in case the email didn't reach her) I'm going to call her office this afternoon and see if there can't be another connection made. Since one of our missions is as fund-raisers, this might provide an opening.

Hey all,
I'm a little lost in all this discussion having only joined the group list after the Katrina concert.
But, the music director at Arlington Street Church is a friend of mine: Miguel Felipe. mfelipe@...
So, that may be useful information for concert planning.
Also, I conduct Juventas, a new music ensemble in Boston. Maybe we could network something.
(I also note that many of you play violin - we're currently in need of a violinist, so please contact me if you're interested).
Hi Mark,
I think it would still be awesome to have a concert at Arlington
Street Church in Boston. I was trying to secure a concert date for
TLIOL for April 1st, and gave them a recording of the performance, but
after several attempts to contact him, I never heard back. If you
think you'd be able to reserve a date for a concert, (but not on April
1st, since it's too close for comfort at this point,) then let me
know. Also, although I'm primarily a violist these days, I do still
play violin (on demand) and would love to perform with your ensemble.
Also as another idea for Long Island, especially if we were to have
it on August 26th, we could probably also get the League of Women
Voters, which has is a powerful and influential force on Long Island
to "Get-out-the-vote," or in our case, "Get-out-the-audience."
Tonight I want to work on drafting a proposal for the Vail-Leavitt
Music Hall, and I'll also write to their head as well. I wonder if
they have a strong force in other places as well?
Gotta run!

Great work, Greg. Not to rain on your work, but we're a new ensemble. Charging 10 bucks might be a bit excessive. You should have a suggested donation of $5 bucks. Hopefully some will donate more than that. After all, it's our burden now to prostilatize ourselves!
On a sadder note, if things work out a certain way for me (and I'll know by the end of April), then I might not be able to attend. But I will definitely help in advertising, and hopefully get some people down there.
On a happier note, would y'all be interested in doing a Providence and a Boston concert as well in August? For the Providence one, I can take care of all the costs... I know the people pretty well. Rehearsal space shouldn't be a problem either... we could use my church. The venue is the music mansion, and I have random pics for those interested (e-mail me).
I'm not sure where exactly in Boston we could have it, but I'd be willing to be a jerk and march down to Arlington to secure us an August date. I'll call my Boston connections to get some of the local composers to come (and perhaps we could premiere a piece or two), and I'll try to secure a media person as well.
Hello everyone!
Love, Anthony

As long as they don't vote to stone the composers who lose.
Of course, some of us arrive at concerts already stoned.

corny, but we could also make sure that we have voter registration
forms at the performance, and perhaps at all subsequent performances.
That could be a way for us to get out the vote without telling
anybody who to vote for.
Also, I do like Anna's idea of having a series of concerts. I may
try to do that as well in New York based upon my summer schedule, with
the big bang finale being in Riverhead at the Vail-Leavitt.
Also, online I found this really awesome Anti-Monopoly Party song.
Check out the library of congress website... I should try to find the
link. But the piece was dedicated to the Anti-Monopoly Party of
California, might be especially useful for concerts in Cali. We're
getting big ideas and big plans now, and I'm lovin' it! :)

Did you know that, according to my calendar, August 26th is"Women's Equality Day"? In 1920, U.S, women won the right to vote.

Hey everyone,
I'm glad to hear from everyone! I am looking forward to whatever we can
schedule next...and really looking forward to playing some new pieces!
Anthony, I heard your recital went very well...sorry I couldn't make it.
It's great that you have so much support from your community in Providence!
I think we should definitely try to schedule a concert there in the next
year.
Ruby...I can't wait to hear your newest piece! The instrumentation seems
oddly fitting considering this country and the message involved... Any
ideas where we could play in CA this summer? I wonder if we could schedule
a sort of concert series in Guernville throughout the summer. Do you think
people would come? Then at the end of the summer when we have a major
concert we might get a little more support. Maybe I'm crazy, but it might
be a lot of fun too...
I'm glad that we're back in motion! I'll try to round up more support and
willing performers!
Anna

Hey Anthony,
Perhaps you're right, maybe we can settle for $5, and also set up
envelopes saying that if people might want to donate more to our grou
that they can.
As per Boston and Providence, I personally would be very much
enthused about concerts there, perhaps in mid-August, or earlier in
the summer or later in May. As I've tried with little luck on
Arlington St. Church in Boston, you might have a better shot with it.
I also didn't march down there in person, so you might have a better
shot that way, they're not too keen on phone or e-mails. :)
Welcome welcome!
-Greg
Great work, Greg. Not to rain on your work, but we're a new ensemble.
Charging 10 bucks might be a bit excessive. You should have a
suggested donation of $5 bucks. Hopefully some will donate more than
that. After all, it's our burden now to prostilatize ourselves!
On a sadder note, if things work out a certain way for me (and I'll
know by the end of April), then I might not be able to attend. But I
will definitely help in advertising, and hopefully get some people
down there.
On a happier note, would y'all be interested in doing a Providence
and a Boston concert as well in August? For the Providence one, I can
take care of all the costs... I know the people pretty well.
Rehearsal space shouldn't be a problem either... we could use my
church. The venue is the music mansion, and I have random pics for
those interested (e-mail me).
I'm not sure where exactly in Boston we could have it, but I'd be
willing to be a jerk and march down to Arlington to secure us an
August date. I'll call my Boston connections to get some of the local
composers to come (and perhaps we could premiere a piece or two), and
I'll try to secure a media person as well.
Hello everyone!
Love,
Anthony

Hey Greg, Sarah, all,
I agree, kudos to Greg for the ideas and the
instigation. I think a summer concert on Long Island
sounds great. Late August works for me; June probably
does not. Poets Against War sound cool, can you get
in touch with them asap? <I will write to them if you
get me their contact info> It would be cool to do a
show with a mix of poetry and music. We could also
potentially set some of their poems to music, if any
of them are interested in collaborating. As for the
venue, I think you (Greg) should just pick something
and get it. You're familiar with the area so you're a
good person to just be in charge of all things
venue-related. The only thing we need to set as a
group is the date.
SWEET!
let's keep organizing,
-Ruby
p.s. #1- Anna and I also talked about trying to
organize an event in the Bay Area after Caz is over
(2nd week of August). Hopefully, Ian and Elly and
folks out there will be into it and have some ideas.
It would be cool to do concerts on the east and west
coast in August, get the ball rolling, hopefully reach
out to some more artists to join up and put on their
own concerts all over the place.
p.s. #2- I've just written a piece called Dear Mister
President for soprano and electric guitar which I'd
love to put on the next TLIOL shows, if we can find
the right performers. It is the setting of a letter
written to George W. and signed by 89 members of
Congress in May 2005 after the Downing Street Memo,
questioning him about going to war.

Hey Sarah, and everybody,
I checked out the hall today, and it is absolutely beautiful. The
weekends there cost $500 to book, and $400 on Monday-Thursday. I'm
thinking that if were to charge admission at $10 a person, and to get
50 people to come we would break even. (They seat a little over 200,)
so hopefully we'd pull in a lot more than that. I figure there might
be a few other options for us as far as venues go, but I'll continue
investigating.
I'm thinking if we can get the financial backing of another group,
and perhaps split the profits, such as the Long Island Environmental
Voters Forum, or another group of similar stature, then we'd be all
set. They said they'd hold onto a few dates for a few weeks until we
make a confirmation. Those dates are: Saturday, June 24, Saturday,
July 1, (which might be tough because it is 4th of July weekend,) and
Saturday, August 26, which would be awesome, because it is a huge
shopping weekend, and there is an outlet center in Town. If there was
a way to do any sort of advertising blitz there, we'd strike it big!
:) Either way, there are a lot of people and mostly tourists and
Hamptonites in town on the weekends. Let me know what you guys think.

Good work. Is there any way to figure out how much a concert in this location would be likely to bring in? Do you know of any other groups who use it/any other benefits done there? It seems like a good idea especially if we were fairly certain we would get a good crowd and had someone to help with the hall rental up front. The local history flair sounds like it could be a draw. I know it may be a trade-off for how many people would come, but what about other locations that don't cost as much, especially if we can't get someone to help with the rental? Ruby got a church in Baltimore for my string quartet for under $100. If a concert at this location is pretty sure to make more than $300 more than a smaller location, it's a great idea. You would know better than me, since Maine is not exactly a place to make big bucks fundraising usually. As to dates, I am sticking around Connecticut for
most of the summer, so I'm flexible with times. I wasn't sure from the email, does it cost more for weekends?
-Sarah
p.s. does Caz know that it has made it to your list of "Major festivals"? Although, I suppose, it is rather important to our group... Watch out Tanglewood!

Hey everyone, Now that I'm on spring break, I'm back in the saddle, and I've been busy trying to plot one of our next moves. I am meeting today with one of the owners and operators of the Vail-Leavitt Music Hall, a 125 year old small-town Opera House, which has been restored and renovated. It is apparently a really cool place, and is used by a lot of theatre and opera companies on Eastern Long Island, and is in
close proximity to the Hamptons, where there is a lot of money to go around. There is also an interesting twist when it comes to this venue, which I think would be awesome to incorporate into this hall. According to their website, there was a composer/conductor by the name of Arthur M. Tyte, who was in residence at this hall, with an ensemble called the "Mozart Orchestra." I've been trying to find some of his music online, (and it seems that his family members own a lot of his manuscripts, and they live in the area,) and so far have found a little ditty called, "Altheas' Wedding March," and an "Easter Hymn." Anyways, I'm thinking in order to improve the odds and the turnout at this performance, I think it would be cool to feature a few pieces by this old-time local composer, who predates Ives. It's not the greatest of music, but I think it would be cool and exciting to draw in elements of the local history
to help contrast it to more contemporary works. The downside which hopefully can be remedied is that we'd have to pay a bit to use the hall, either $400 for a weeknight (Mon-Thurs.), or a weekend (Fri.-Sun.) I'm considering trying to conspire with local activist/environmental groups to make it a joint fundraiser. As of right now, there are two groups that stand out in mind, one is a Poets Against the War group, which I think would be cool to have them on board, but I don't think that they would have much pull outside of the activist community. The other group that I think would be up our alley to team up with, who could possibly back us in renting the hall is the "Long Island Environmental Voters Forum," with which I've worked for over the past 3 years. They are a non-profit, non-partisan group that works to elect environmentally friendly candidates. They recieve major backing from local TV
executives, Lawyers, educators, civic groups and activists, and have a lot of media muscle as well. Teaming up with them, and perhaps splitting the proceeds would be a fantastic way to get us on the map, and I think networking with them would be great in helping us establish ourselves more. Let me know what you guys think, because I can start piecing this together right away, but give me your input so I know where everyone else stands! Casadero, Icicle, Henry Mancini, etc.) So let me know what you're all thinking!

Brings words and photos together (easily) with PhotoMail - it's free and works with Yahoo! Mail.
Hey everyone,
Now that I'm on spring break, I'm back in the saddle, and I've been
busy trying to plot one of our next moves. I am meeting today with
one of the owners and operators of the Vail-Leavitt Music Hall, a 125
year old small-town Opera House, which has been restored and
renovated. It is apparently a really cool place, and is used by a lot
of theatre and opera companies on Eastern Long Island, and is in close
proximity to the Hamptons, where there is a lot of money to go around.
There is also an interesting twist when it comes to this venue,
which I think would be awesome to incorporate into this hall.
According to their website, there was a composer/conductor by the name
of Arthur M. Tyte, who was in residence at this hall, with an ensemble
called the "Mozart Orchestra." I've been trying to find some of his
music online, (and it seems that his family members own a lot of his
manuscripts, and they live in the area,) and so far have found a
little ditty called, "Altheas' Wedding March," and an "Easter Hymn."
Anyways, I'm thinking in order to improve the odds and the turnout at
this performance, I think it would be cool to feature a few pieces by
this old-time local composer, who predates Ives. It's not the
greatest of music, but I think it would be cool and exciting to draw
in elements of the local history to help contrast it to more
contemporary works.
The downside which hopefully can be remedied is that we'd have to
pay a bit to use the hall, either $400 for a weeknight (Mon-Thurs.),
or a weekend (Fri.-Sun.) I'm considering trying to conspire with
local activist/environmental groups to make it a joint fundraiser. As
of right now, there are two groups that stand out in mind, one is a
Poets Against the War group, which I think would be cool to have them
on board, but I don't think that they would have much pull outside of
the activist community. The other group that I think would be up our
alley to team up with, who could possibly back us in renting the hall
is the "Long Island Environmental Voters Forum," with which I've
worked for over the past 3 years. They are a non-profit, non-partisan
group that works to elect environmentally friendly candidates. They
recieve major backing from local TV executives, Lawyers, educators,
civic groups and activists, and have a lot of media muscle as well.
Teaming up with them, and perhaps splitting the proceeds would be a
fantastic way to get us on the map, and I think networking with them
would be great in helping us establish ourselves more. Let me know
what you guys think, because I can start piecing this together right
away, but give me your input so I know where everyone else stands!
Also as far as the date goes, I'm thinking either late June, or
mid-to-late August, (after the dates of most major festivals, eg.
Casadero, Icicle, Henry Mancini, etc.) So let me know what you're all
thinking!
-Greg
Also, you guys...
An addendum to my last e-mail, feel free to post information on
other upcoming concerts you might have on the site, (in the Calendars
section) and if you have any say in your program notes and bios, feel
free to mention your involvement with the group- it seems like there
is a lot of interest from people out there, so spread the word!
-Greg
Hey everyone,
I have some not so great news. I have not received any feedback or
confirmation from the Arlington Street Church over the last month as
to whether or not the concert will actually take place on April 1st.
Given that it is now March 6th at the time of writing this e-mail, I
would have to say that it would be nearly impossible to put together
an effective concert in 3 1/2 weeks, (though we had about as much time
with our innaugural concert.)
In the meantime, I'd say we should throw around the idea of putting
together a concert in Boston before Summer breaks out, I was thinking
perhaps during the 3rd week of May, and I am also interested in
putting together a recital with a smaller cast of characters on Long
Island towards the end of the summer, perhaps in August. If we can't
successful obtain the Arlington Street Church for mid-to-late May,
what other venues would any of you guys recommend that we can get for
cheap to free? Also, to Ruby, Anna, Ian, and those of you who
definitely plan on being in Cali over the summer, what's the plan on a
concert around San Francisco at that point in the year?
My goal for this week is to work my magic on booking a venue on
Long Island, and planning a TLIOL recital around that. I was leaning
towards an All-20th/21st Century recital featuring a lot of Viola
music, but that too, can be altered as needed.
So speak up ye mateys, and let's get this show on the road!
-Greg
April 1st is a Saturday, but I'll definitely keep that in mind. I'll call them
(the people at the Arlington
Street Church) tomorrow to make a confirmation on the time.

I'm not sure if I already responded at all, but I won't be available for the April 1st date. My sister and I are playing a concert in Maine that weekend. robert b. Part 2.1 Dear Flutists
I wanted to take the time to let people know that the flute donations have been coming through my shop, and heading to New Orleans in order to put things back together musically for school children there.
It has been enormously gratifying to know that our colletive efforts (your very generously donated flutes, and my donated repairs) have made it possible for a college student to continue her flute studies, and put several High School students are back in the playing chairs in their respective bands. There are a few more flutes sitting on
my shelf, that will soon be ready to donate as well...and a Powell headjoint that I will send out tomorrow.
I am going to send part of the email that brought tears to my eyes today when I read it today...
<<Today there was a wonderful presentation from a local foundation to help us replace instruments, and the string orchestra played for them (the band kids couldn't be there since it was not band class time). My daughter (a cellist) reported that virtually everyone in the audience--including the donors--was weeping (okay, I admit it, I was too, but I didn't let her see me!). It was very moving to see these brave kids, who have come back to their school in one of the hardest hit parts of the city, creating beautiful music again. So thank you again, for helping rebuild the Franklin band.
The principal also surprised them at the end by announcing that they will be able to go on their annual
band and orchestra trip to Disneyworld to compete. In the past, they have come home every year with the top trophy, but she had indicated that the trip couldn't happen this year. I think in part it is through the tremendous caring and support from all of you around the country that she is seeing for the band and orchestra that helped change her mind. My daughter has described the trip as "magical" and it is among her most precious memories of high school, so to have that restored for her senior year is huge (okay, I wept at that announcement, too).>>

that point, I am sure I will easily find another school awaiting help...

Hey Ian and all,
The latest is a potential booking of the Arlington Street Church for
Saturday, April 1st.
I'm passing on a recording of the last concert to the director of Music there
and will try to
confirm the details. It seems that our group is the type of work that they try
to support.
I'll give you guys the details as I get them.
Until then,

Go for it dude. Our mission statement was drafted in somewhat of a hurry (just to have SOMETHING really...). Updating it would probably be a good idea. I'm stoked to hear ideas of future events for the group. cheers all -Ian
Subject: [ThisLandIsOurLand] Re: Update: Sarlo, Mission change, New road show date, Individual events, Webpage needed
I was looking at a piece that was sent to me from a composer in Michigan and was inspired to start reviewing the Mission Statement from ThisLandIsOurLand, as produced earlier last summer out in California. It occured to me that we haven't done much to either condense it, modify it, or ratify it among our online members.
I took a stab at editing it a bit, and making some updates in it. After my Cleveland Audition, I want to focus on securing a date and place for another TLIOL Concert at either the end of March or early April in Boston. I have a few venues in mind, and I want to get started in putting this together. I think we should also start looking ahead towards this summer, perhaps finding venues in other cities and locales, (ie. San Francisco, Baltimore, Providence, Long Island, etc.).
I hope everyone's semester and New Year is starting off on a good foot.
-Best,
-Greg
PS- The Mission Statement Update is going to be found in the files section. Please give me some feedback.

So you guys know, this recital ended up being a success! $102 was
raised to go towards the William Floyd Music Alumni Scholarship,
which goes out every year to William Floyd graduates pursuing a
career in music.

Hey Y'all,
I'm sending out letters to local Long Island leaders to tell them a bit about ThisLandIsOurLand, in the hopes of establishing a concert or a few concerts sometime over the Summer of 2006. I've also been doing a little research on locales for a concert in the Spring of 2006 in Boston or Brookline. The Brookline Public Library which a few of you guys suggested, requires the submission of audition recordings for the 6 spots for the following year. The deadline for the 2006-07 year is February 28, 2006, so perhaps it might be best to submit a tape for the following year, or find another venue in the meantime. I was talking with a vocalist friend of mine who suggested the Arlington St. Church, the one that is on the corner of Arlington at the Public Garden. It might be a good locale, and I think we'd have a shot, 1) since the music director is a BU alum who is big on New Music. Here is a link to their website:

Let me know what you guys think. Hope all is going well for everyone.

Hey you guys,
Below is the e-mail I received from Dean Howard, of the Tipitina's
Organization. I'm glad the received it, I was a little worried... :)
Hope all is well with you guys.
On another note, I was doing a lot of brainstorming, and I was
pondering the idea of doing a series of concerts on Long Island, my
original habitat, including several of them that could be sponsored or
presented by This Land Is Our Land. As it was I was thinking of doing
an a contemporary viola recital at somepoint over the summer. From
the research I've been doing, there is a huge void of contemporary
music on Long Island- outside of the little done at SUNY Stony Brook
and C.W. Post. Let me know what you guys think.

Greg,
I'll be sending you a hard copy of recognition for your efforts in
helping our Foundation. In the meanwhile, I wanted to let you know
that we received your package including the $300 check from the
Katrina Benefit Konzert at This Land Is Our Land put together.
Thanks so much for helping us further our mission of helping the
musicians and artists that were affected by the hurricane. The hard
copy will include more information of how the money being donated is used.
Best,
Dean Howard
