"If I Were a Carpenter" was blasted all across the USA and Canada on XM Radio
yesterday
morning around 11:00 am. I waited to hear the DJ talk expecting that it was
broadcast on
the singer-songwriter station "The Bridge" - but no, it was on another XM
station. The
performance was so exceptional that I couldn't help but take notice. The lead
singer really
put his heart and soul into the led vocal. Can you guess who?

Well, that's the clue, innit? And John's right; it's a great performance, pure
joy from a proto-metal singer whose favorite music, most are shocked to
discover, was Joni Mitchell and Moby Grape.

Well, the hint was - soul. The track was on XM Radio's "Soul Town" and
the song.... The Four Tops version of "If I Were a Carpenter." I love how the
lead singer sings "if I were a miller and a mill wheel grinding..."

Tim Hardin "If I Were a Carpenter" broadcast on "XM Radio's "The Bridge" today
at 11:24 AM - in the middle of a three song - after the Rolling Stones
"Waiting On a Friend" and before Supertramp "Take the Long Way Home."

I found this on a Belgian website. A snippet of Tim's performance in the Twiggy
show and a story told by a grey bearded Tim Hardin fan.
Here's my translation of his story:
Tim Hardin, a fantastic singer, was my hero from the release of his first album.
By coincidence we met. I lived in a suburban part of Gent, "the Brugse Buurt" as
it was called. It was a real suburb, with old ladies sitting on chairs in the
front garden, and Tim Hardin, completely naked, went to buy cigarettes. I swear.
I said: "Tim, what are you doing?" And he answered: "It's cool, I know what I'm
doing." He just went out to buy cigarettes in his bare ass and you know... it
looked like the old ladies even seemed to like it. Fantastic.

I know Brian Mathieson is planning to transfer his vhs-video to dvd. I asked him

This evening (Friday 1st October) on BBC4 - one of their digital channels -
started another set of 60min music compilations: Singer/Songwriters At The BBC
(No.1 of 4) and there it was, 45mins in: Baltimore with Twiggy from 1974
(September) series "Show of the Week: Twiggs" According to he website (link
below) the show also included with Paul Jones & The Irving Davies Dancers, and
she also sang Hang On To Dream (presumably solo, as Tim is not credited here).

http://www.twiggylawson.co.uk/tvarchives.html

Tim is remarkably controlled (musically) and composed, singing and playing it
almost exactly as per the record (as we know that is so unusual for him). Eyes
closed throughout and his finger-picking excellent and a broad happy smile at
the end, he's in good shape. He sings the song throughout except Twiggy solos
the second verse and on the chorus line they duet.

A magical performance that was as pleasurable as it was unexpected.

Thanks for reporting this -  I also saw it, by chance. Twiggy's vocal is not
bad - she harmonises well, and is not overbearing.  The song is performed with
a bit of a difference, particularly over the ".....I fell in love with the lady,
and got away with none" line, which is lengthened, melodically.  I can't recall
any cover of the song doing it this way - I guess that's Tim for you.

Is anyone here able to record this?  Sorry, I don't have the means.  I think
the prog will be repeated this week.  A lot of these BBC clips end up on
YouTube, so maybe we'll see it one way or another.

A lot of the show is very good.  A couple of clunkers, like Terry Jack
(songwriter??) and Neil Diamond, but more gems like Judee Sill, Steve Goodman,
early Neil Young.

For the record, the Tim and Twiggy song poccurs at 47' 55" - 50' 05".

There are so many gems on this show (including The Pearl by Judee Sill)...

Or better yet upload to a free file vault like http://megaupload.com/

If needed to fit upload file size limit, you can get a free file splitter here:

This would REALLY be great!

Singer / Songwriters at the BBC Part 2 (of 4) shown tonight - Friday 8th October
on BBC4 tv..

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00v4kdy/SingerSongwriters_at_the_BBC_Episo\

…and there, at 47' 10" minutes into the programme is Tim and guitar (solo) with
Misty Roses from the same Show Of The Week: Twiggs from 1974.

Still keeping to the 2+ minutes length but starting to bend those lines in
typical fashion, and with a full string orchestra seeping through in the
background (it's amazing they managed to finish at the same time as Tim as he,
in typical fashion, just decided to finish it……….there.).Visually throughout
it's a simple upper torso shot fading around the edges and merging into a rose
surround. A visual cliché perhaps but at least they didn't mess around with Tim'
performance.

Again, please, of anyone can grab these performances and programmes please dio
let us know.

[[For the record, Tim was then followed by a favourite performance of mine: Paul
Simon singing American Tune solo (just voice and guitar) from the Parkinson show
1973; a version I reckon is better than the album]].

Thanks again, Ray, I'm glad you saw it too, and reported. Even better than last
week's treat, I think.

Only thing to add, Tim is playing what might be an Ovation guitar. Grab it while
you can, those with BBC iPlayer access (the USA might be excluded).
