Founded in 1988, Gamelan Tunas Mekar plays the vibrant gamelan
"angklung"* music that traditionally accompanies temple festivals and
traditional life-cycle rites, including tooth filings and cremations,
as well as more recreational events; and is the proud new owner of a
gamelan Semara Dana orchestra, one of only two in the United States.

Tunas Mekar performs this rich music throughout the Rocky Mountain
region in schools, at community cultural festivals, private events
and specially produced concerts, pursuing the goals of musical
perfection and human cooperation, and raising awareness of a
mysterious and magnificent culture.

Members: Frankie Anderson, Merisa Bissinger, Alana Eve Burman, Jon
Ellison, Meta Ellison, Mike Fitts, Jill Fredericksen, Jack Inslee,
Josh Kaufman, Rebecca Dengler Kaufman, Daniel Nunez, Carolyn Oakley,
Anie Pelletier, Dane Terry, Marissa Tiroly.

For more information about Tunas Mekar, the instruments,
and upcoming events, visit http://www.tunasmekar.org.

*The primary set of instruments used by Gamelan Tunas Mekar is a
Gamelan Angklung ("angklung" means "bamboo"), imported from Bali by
Colorado Women's College in 1976 and now owned by the University of
Denver Lamont School of Music. The four metal bars of the instruments
are suspended over bamboo resonators encased in hand-carved jackfruit
wood.

Mark Your Calendars Now: Due to its overwhelming success, Tunas Mekar will present an extended version of the Ramayana Ballet on December 12-14, 2003 at Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Theater in Denver. Stay tuned for more details, or visit our website at http://www.tunasmekar.org.

Edgewalkers Fall Dialogue Series Begins With Exploration of
"DEEP CREATIVITY: CREATION AND COMMUNITY THROUGH THE EYES OF BALINESE CULTURE"
with I Made Lasmawan and members of Gamelan Tunas Mekar

On Wednesday, September 10th, the Denver-based Edgewalkers Institute will present an evening of exploration and learning "through the eyes of Balinese culture" with I Made Lasmawan, Mike Fitts, Dane Terry and other members of the Balinese Gamelan Tunas Mekar Orchestra. Pak Made is one of less than 50 Balinese living in the United Sates and is a master teacher, composer, conductor, cultural scholar and Balinese drummer.

The evening-the first of its kind in Colorado-will feature a series of short lectures interspersed with music, dance, ceremony and open dialog about the underlying beliefs and reasons why the Balinese - as Agama Hindu - live peacefully as artists grounded within their birth village or Banjar. For Americans seeking a deeper sense of community and creativity, this promises to be a rich evening of learning and discovery.

Registration: The event will be held at the downtown Denver LODO Tattered Cover, 3rd floor, at 16th and Wynkoop [303.322.1965]. The 3.5-hour program is open to members of the Edgewalkers community and the public and will start at 5:00 pm. Admission is $40.00 for non-members, and $30 for members. Pre-registration is required. To make a reservation call 303.333.1393, or see the Edgewalkers Institute website at http://www.edgewalkers.com for details and more information on the Institute's upcoming calendar of events [like the "Connect at the Edges" event on Monday, September 22].

The Balinese people are known for their beauty, tranquillity, sense of community and deep spirituality which is reflected in their unique traditional culture and lifestyle. Pak Lasmawan, in this first ever Colorado-based exploration of Balinese history and life, will share his deep love of his country through his personal insight into his native country's concepts of unity and balance; the organized village or Banjar; and the idea of connection as it relates to hierarchy, nature, humanity and God. Pak Made will also lead the Tunas Mekar Orchestra in traditional song and dance.

This is a rare opportunity to gain knowledge from a culture and people who have a unique connection to life. Many feel the Balinese culture, as reflected through ceremony, creativity, and community, can bring enrichment to our own fractured western lifestyle.

Please join us at the Edgewalkers Institute's Dialogue Series and explore the creative possibilities catalyzed by the convergence of different viewpoints. The Edgewalkers Dialogue Series and most other events are open to the public.
