An Evening of Indonesian Music and Dance
Saturday, March 19, 7pm
Boulder High School Auditorium
1604 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder

Join Gamelan Tunas Mekar, North Sumatra Vocal Group and Rebecca Dengler-Kaufman, vocalist, an Evening of Indonesian Music and Dance. Proceeds will benefit Tsunami Disaster Relief in North Sumatra and Nias Island, which has largely been ignored by disaster relief organizations.

Tickets are $15/adult, $5 children 12 & under, $25/family, and may be purchased in advance or at the door. For advance tickets, contact North Sumatra Vocal Group at 720-936-2867. Plenty of seating will be available at the door, so don’t hesitate to come if you don’t have advance tickets!

What: Unlike other Tsunami Relief concerts, this unique event focuses solely on the music and dance of Indonesia.

In a rare Boulder appearance, Tunas Mekar will accompany the dances “Baris,” featuring I Putu Tangkas , and “Cendrawasih,” featuring Ni Ketut Marni and Ni Nyoman Erawati. Tunas Mekar will also perform traditional and contemporary music of Bali on the gamelan angklung orchestra.

Boulder’s North Sumatra Vocal Group will perform songs from the area. Children’s dances from North Sumatra will also be presented.

Rebecca Dengler-Kaufman, a member of Tunas Mekar and a professional vocalist who studied in Aceh, will perform songs from the Minangkabau culture of West Sumatra. Ms. Kaufman says of these songs “As with most Minangkabau songs, these poetic songs are full of metaphors which relate everyday activities to the sadness or joys of life.”

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to celebrate the arts and culture of Indonesia while making a much-needed donation.

Why: To benefit tsunami disaster relief in North Sumatra and Nias Island. Proceeds will go directly to an orphanage in Medan (the capital of North Sumatra) and to Nias Island, a small island off the west coast of Sumatra. Because of its remote location, Nias Island (and others in this island chain) was largely ignored by other relief efforts. Funds will be distributed through IMBIC Foundation.

For Additional Information: North Sumatra Vocal Group, 720-936-2867; Gamelan Tunas Mekar, 303-433-3782 or http://www.tunasmekar.org.

Donations accepted: Donations can be made directly to “IMBIC Foundation for Tsunami Relief Fund” for those who can’t make the performance but want to donate. Contact North Sumatra Vocal Group at 720-936-2867 for more information.
