Gamelan Tunas Mekar and Rebecca Dengler-Kaufman participate in
“Asia-Fantasia: A Tsunami Benefit Show”
Saturday, April 9 at CSU, Fort Collins.
Tunas Mekar will play two pieces on the gamelan angklung: the traditional instrumental piece “Sekar Sendat” and the vibrant “Cendrawasih” (Bird of Paradise) dance featuring dancers Ni Ketut Marni and Ni Nyoman Erawati. The group will be led by artist-in-residence I Made Lasmawan. Rebecca Dengler-Kaufman, a member of Tunas Mekar and a professional vocalist who studied in Aceh, will perform songs from the Minangkabau culture of West Sumatra.
Although the entire concert runs from 2-5pm, Rebecca and Tunas Mekar will perform somewhere around 4:00-4:30pm (if all goes according to schedule). See details of this gala event below!
Funds raised through previous benefit concerts
This will be the 3rd (and not the last!) tsunami benefit concert in which Tunas Mekar has performed. We thank everyone who has come out to support these relief efforts. January’s benefit in Denver raised over $4,300 for Indonesian relief (over $11,000 total funds for all four affected areas); Boulder’s concert raised over $1,400 for aid to Nias Island and a children’s orphanage in Medan. Just as importantly, both concerts raised an awareness and appreciation of the rich cultures affected by the earthquakes and tsunami, and homage was paid to the victims of these disasters.
For those of you who were not able to attend the Boulder concert, but wish to donate to relief efforts in those areas – especially after the recent earthquake in Nias Island – donations may be made directly to “IMBIC Foundation for Tsunami Relief Fund” c/o Effendi Sihombing, 5528 Homestead Way, Boulder, CO 80301.
Gamelan Tunas Mekar is a non-profit 501 [c][3] organization, and is sponsored in part by the DU Lamont School of Music. For more information, visit our website at http://www.tunasmekar.org.
