A CELEBRATION OF BALINESE MUSIC AND DANCE
Boulder International Fringe Festival and Tunas Mekar presents A Celebration of Balinese Music & Dance with pieces performed on the exotic semaradana orchestra. Highlights include the Colorado premiere of Cilinaya, a dance piece featuring dancers Ni Ketut Marni and Ni Nyoman Erawati; Nyegara Gunung, a new orchestral piece by artist-in-residence I Made Lasmawan; and the festive Barong dance with dancers I Putu Tangkas Adi Mayena and I Made Tangkas Ade Wijaya.
The program will open with a bala ganjur processional. Traditionally, processionals were used to create havoc in the villages and chase away evil spirits.
The semaradana orchestra upon which Tunas Mekar will perform was purchased by the group in 1999. The instruments were hand carved and tuned in Bali specifically for Tunas Mekar. The semaradana is unique in that it incorporates numerous modes (saih) within one orchestra. Enjoy this unique, new sound from Bali, Indonesia.
Located in Denver, Colorado, USA, Gamelan Tunas Mekar is a community orchestra under the direction of composer and artist-in-residence I Made Lasmawan, which performs the indigenous music of the island of Bali, Indonesia. Modeled after typical village groups found throughout Bali, and learning by traditional methods, Tunas Mekar provides American audiences with an authentic glimpse of one of the world's most fascinating cultures.
