Gamelan Tunas Mekar invites you to warm up your holidays with the unique, tropical sounds of Bali. Experience intricate interlocking rhythms and dynamic flurries of percussion performed on the exotic bronze instruments of the Balinese gamelan. Shimmering compositions are woven together with story-telling dance for an effect that is both startling and compelling.
Tunas Mekar, sponsored by the Los Angeles Consulate of the Republic of Indonesia and the University of Denver Lamont School of Music, will perform a concert of instrumental and dance pieces, including Panyembrama, a traditional village welcome dance, and the ancient theatrical Topeng masked dance, on the gamelan angklung. Colorado-based Balinese dancer Ni Ketut Marni will be joined by special guests Ni Ayu Putu Niastarika of Kansas City and I Gusti Ngurah Kertayuda of Chicago. This is a rare opportunity to see these delightful dances and experience the rich culture of Indonesia. The event is open to the public and admission is FREE.
This performance, which is also designed to increase awareness of Indonesia as a travel destination, will be held on December 18th, 2005 from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Hamilton Recital Hall at the University of Denver’s Newman Center, located at 2344 E. Iliff Avenue, Denver, CO 80208. The doors will open at 4:30 p.m., and the concert will be preceded by a video provided by the Consulate depicting the many scenic and cultural aspects of the Indonesian Archipelago. Tunas Mekar’s sister group, Catur Eka Santi, will perform the music of the Balinese shadow puppet play on the exquisite gamelan gender wayang. Catur Eka Santi will play for 20 minutes starting at 4:30 p.m. Tunas Mekar, joined by guest Balinese dancers, will perform on the gamelan angklung from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Gamelan Tunas Mekar, founded in 1988, is a group of 20 musicians from Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs and Ft. Collins. Balinese gamelan music is highly rhythmic, utilizing various gongs, drums and metallophones (bronze bars suspended over bamboo resonators and struck with wooden mallets) encased in ornate hand-carved jackfruit wood. Bamboo flutes, or sulings, embellish the basic melodies. The gamelan angklung is an orchestra traditionally used for temple ceremonies. The Sanskrit root of the word gamelan means “to hammer,” and it is truly powerful and exciting to hear 20 people “hammer” heavy bronze bars in synchronized rhythms, accompanied by the sweet sound of bamboo flutes and Bali-style singing over a foundation provided by large gongs.
This event promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience and a rare occasion for the public to enjoy traditional Balinese music and dance for FREE, thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Indonesian Consulate of Los Angeles and the University of Denver Lamont School of Music. Seating is limited, however, so please come early to be assured of a seat. Parking is available for a fee in the Newman Center's parking garage; street parking may be found to the east of University Boulevard.
Don't miss this opportunity to experience the music and dance of Bali in one of Denver's finest concert halls.

Gamelan Tunas Mekar and Rebecca Dengler-Kaufman participate in
“Asia-Fantasia: A Tsunami Benefit Show”
Saturday, April 9 at CSU, Fort Collins. Tunas Mekar will play two pieces on the gamelan angklung: the traditional instrumental piece “Sekar Sendat” and the vibrant “Cendrawasih” (Bird of Paradise) dance featuring dancers Ni Ketut Marni and Ni Nyoman Erawati. The group will be led by artist-in-residence I Made Lasmawan. Rebecca Dengler-Kaufman, a member of Tunas Mekar and a professional vocalist who studied in Aceh, will perform songs from the Minangkabau culture of West Sumatra.
Although the entire concert runs from 2-5pm, Rebecca and Tunas Mekar will perform somewhere around 4:00-4:30pm (if all goes according to schedule). See details of this gala event below!
Funds raised through previous benefit concerts This will be the 3rd (and not the last!) tsunami benefit concert in which Tunas Mekar has performed. We thank everyone who has come out to support these relief efforts. January’s benefit in Denver raised over $4,300 for Indonesian relief (over $11,000 total funds for all four affected areas); Boulder’s concert raised over $1,400 for aid to Nias Island and a children’s orphanage in Medan. Just as importantly, both concerts raised an awareness and appreciation of the rich cultures affected by the earthquakes and tsunami, and homage was paid to the victims of these disasters.
For those of you who were not able to attend the Boulder concert, but wish to donate to relief efforts in those areas – especially after the recent earthquake in Nias Island – donations may be made directly to “IMBIC Foundation for Tsunami Relief Fund” c/o Effendi Sihombing, 5528 Homestead Way, Boulder, CO 80301.

An Evening of Indonesian Music and Dance Saturday, March 19, 7pm
Boulder High School Auditorium
1604 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder
Join Gamelan Tunas Mekar, North Sumatra Vocal Group and Rebecca Dengler-Kaufman, vocalist, an Evening of Indonesian Music and Dance. Proceeds will benefit Tsunami Disaster Relief in North Sumatra and Nias Island, which has largely been ignored by disaster relief organizations.
Tickets are $15/adult, $5 children 12 & under, $25/family, and may be purchased in advance or at the door. For advance tickets, contact North Sumatra Vocal Group at 720-936-2867. Plenty of seating will be available at the door, so don’t hesitate to come if you don’t have advance tickets!
What:Unlike other Tsunami Relief concerts, this unique event focuses solely on the music and dance of Indonesia.
In a rare Boulder appearance, Tunas Mekar will accompany the dances “Baris,” featuring I Putu Tangkas , and “Cendrawasih,” featuring Ni Ketut Marni and Ni Nyoman Erawati. Tunas Mekar will also perform traditional and contemporary music of Bali on the gamelan angklung orchestra.
Boulder’s North Sumatra Vocal Group will perform songs from the area. Children’s dances from North Sumatra will also be presented.
Rebecca Dengler-Kaufman, a member of Tunas Mekar and a professional vocalist who studied in Aceh, will perform songs from the Minangkabau culture of West Sumatra. Ms. Kaufman says of these songs “As with most Minangkabau songs, these poetic songs are full of metaphors which relate everyday activities to the sadness or joys of life.”
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to celebrate the arts and culture of Indonesia while making a much-needed donation.
Why: To benefit tsunami disaster relief in North Sumatra and Nias Island. Proceeds will go directly to an orphanage in Medan (the capital of North Sumatra) and to Nias Island, a small island off the west coast of Sumatra. Because of its remote location, Nias Island (and others in this island chain) was largely ignored by other relief efforts. Funds will be distributed through IMBIC Foundation.
For Additional Information: North Sumatra Vocal Group, 720-936-2867; Gamelan Tunas Mekar, 303-433-3782 or http://www.tunasmekar.org.
Donations accepted:Donations can be made directly to “IMBIC Foundation for Tsunami Relief Fund” for those who can’t make the performance but want to donate. Contact North Sumatra Vocal Group at 720-936-2867 for more information.

Deep Creativity: Creation & Community
Through the Eyes of Balinese Culture With I Made Lasmawan, Michael Fitts, Dane Terry, and other
members of the Balinese Gamelan Tunas MekarOrchestra and Community
Beckoning to westerners from the edge of a warm aquamarine sea on the
other side of the world, lies an Asian island still shrouded in
mystery and allure. A lush paradise that elicits visions of a country
that naturally evokes curiosity.... fascination.... introspection and
desire.
For those of us who've had the pleasure of visiting Bali, Indonesia,
the mystery, beauty and deep spirituality we've found there touches
our soul and lingers forever. But for those few who dig a bit deeper,
one soon discovers there is much more to this island culture than
exotic allure. The lessons of Balinese culture are not only for the
heart and soul-they're for the mind as well.
In a culture where everyone is an artist-and all play a critical
part in the Balinese community-creativity and a lifelong commitment
to living in connection to others, Earth and God are deeply held
principles integral to the Balinese concept of the village or Banjar.
As a complex tapestry of spirituality and practicality, the Banjar is
actually the foundation of Balinese life and society. Deep within the
Balinese soul, their innate understanding of cooperation has much to
teach us in our fragmented western world. It is to this learning-a
learning that our world needs desperately-that we dedicate this
magical evening of sharings, culture, music, Agama Hindu ceremony,
dialogue and much more.
Here is just a small taste of the evening the honorable Pak Made
Lasmawan and the talented members of the local Denver Gamelan
orchestra and Banjar have in store:
The education of a Balinese child begins with the introduction of the
concept of the 'Catur Guru,' the 'Four Teachers' who provide all
the instruction necessary to transform the child into an adult member
of the village. These four are the 'Guru Rupaka,' the child's
parents, the 'Guru Pengajian,' the village school teachers, the 'Guru
Wisesa,' the local civil authorities, and the 'Guru Swadiaya,' the
Balinese Hindu deities (including the supreme God, Sanghyang Widi
Wasa). These four sources of learning occupy an ascending hierarchy,
with the Gods' teachings preeminent above the others.
These three elements of human social life are called 'Tri Kaya
Parisuda.' The goal of this instructional path is to bring about an
agreement in philosophy, conversing and acting among the village
populace.
Possessing an education built on this foundation is what permits the
Balinese to pass successfully through a world of 'Rwa Bhineda,' or
diametric opposites. The Balinese see our world as made up of
countless of these opposing pairs, such as male and female, day and
night, and most of all, good and evil. Believing the safety of their
lives and society to depend on a continuing balance of all these
forces, Balinese direct their prayers toward this end. [To make these
principles even more relevant, Pak Made will discuss this principle in
relationship to the recent terrorist bombing of the Kuta
nightclub.]
To pursue this path is to realize a steady progress of 'Jati Diri,'
the individual's spiritual essence. And for every individual
Balinese, the most powerful expression of 'Jati Diri' is full
participation in the village political structure, or Banjar, and in
the spirit of communal work, or 'Gotong Royong.'
Please join us in this first ever Colorado-based rare exploration of
Balinese history and life; concepts of unity and balance; the
organized village or Banjar community; and the idea of connection as
it relates to hierarchy, nature, humanity and God. Come learn what the
Balinese mean when they say, "The circle of life never stops,"
and join us in the never-ending global circle of life.
Master Balinese drummer and composer I Made Lasmawan was born in
the village of Bangah, in the Baturiti region of the regency of
Tabanan, Bali in 1958. Strongly influenced by his family and involved
in the arts since childhood, he received degrees in the Traditional
Performing Arts of Bali (KOKAR, Denpasar, Bali, 1977) and Traditional
Indonesian Music [STSI, Surakarta, Central Java, 1983). He is a
prolific composer who taught Balinese music at STSI until 1990, when
he was invited to San Diego State University to teach Javanese and
Balinese music. Living in Colorado since 1993 as Artist-in-Residence
with Gamelan Tunas Mekar, Pak Lasmawan also teaches Balinese gamelan
at Colorado College, Naropa University, the University of Wyoming and
the University of Colorado. Pak Lasmawan has traveled throughout the
world, and has taught throughout the U.S. He is accompanied in the
United States by his wife (a Balinese dancer), Ni Ketut Marni and his
sons, Putu Tangkas Adi Mayena (dancer and musician), Ade and Aji. When
in Bali, Pak Lasmawan continues to play a lead role in the development
of his home village's musical orchestras.
Michael Fitts, an integral part of the Colorado music community, is
president of Tunas Mekar, Inc., a Colorado nonprofit 501(c)(3)
organization, and respected founder of the "Synergy Music Group,
Inc."-a music promotion and entertainment company and jazz
label that has recorded some 30 leading jazz projects.
Dane Terry, a founding member of the Gamelan Tunas Mekar, lived his
early years on a U.S. Army post on a mountain in northern Ethiopia.
There he listened to Coptic drumming, American parade music, his
father's Stan Getz albums, and his mother's church organ playing. He
has resisted categorization ever since. Dane has played timpani with
the Pepperdine University Symphony, drums in the Arizona State
Marching Band and rock-n-roll guitar in Antarctica where he was a
field engineer for Antarctica Support Associates. ######################################################################################################

Founded in 1988, Gamelan Tunas Mekar plays the vibrant gamelan
"angklung"* music that traditionally accompanies temple
festivals and
traditional life-cycle rites, including tooth filings and
cremations,
as well as more recreational events; and is the proud new owner of
a
gamelan Semara Dana orchestra, one of only two in the United
States.
Tunas Mekar performs this rich music throughout the Rocky Mountain
region in schools, at community cultural festivals, private events
and specially produced concerts, pursuing the goals of musical
perfection and human cooperation, and raising awareness of a
mysterious and magnificent culture.
Members: Frankie Anderson, Merisa Bissinger, Alana Eve Burman, Jon
Ellison, Meta Ellison, Mike Fitts, Jill Fredericksen, Jack Inslee,
Josh Kaufman, Rebecca Dengler Kaufman, Daniel Nunez, Carolyn

instruments
are suspended over bamboo resonators encased in hand-carved
jackfruit
wood.

Edgewalkers Fall Dialogue Series Begins With Exploration
of
"DEEP CREATIVITY: CREATION AND COMMUNITY THROUGH THE EYES
OF BALINESE CULTURE"
with I Made Lasmawan and members of Gamelan Tunas
Mekar
On Wednesday, September 10th, the Denver-based Edgewalkers
Institute will present an evening of exploration and learning
"through the eyes of Balinese culture" with I Made Lasmawan,
Mike Fitts, Dane Terry and other members of the Balinese Gamelan Tunas
Mekar Orchestra. Pak Made is one of less than 50 Balinese living in
the United Sates and is a master teacher, composer, conductor,
cultural scholar and Balinese drummer.
The evening-the first of its kind in Colorado-will feature a
series of short lectures interspersed with music, dance, ceremony and
open dialog about the underlying beliefs and reasons why the Balinese
- as Agama Hindu - live peacefully as artists grounded within
their birth village or Banjar. For Americans seeking a deeper sense of
community and creativity, this promises to be a rich evening of
learning and discovery.
Registration: The event will be held at the downtown Denver LODO
Tattered Cover, 3rd floor, at 16th and Wynkoop [303.322.1965]. The
3.5-hour program is open to members of the Edgewalkers community and
the public and will start at 5:00 pm. Admission is $40.00 for
non-members, and $30 for members. Pre-registration is required. To
make a reservation call 303.333.1393, or see the Edgewalkers Institute
website at http://www.edgewalkers.com for details and more information
on the Institute's upcoming calendar of events [like the "Connect
at the Edges" event on Monday, September 22].
The Balinese people are known for their beauty, tranquillity, sense of
community and deep spirituality which is reflected in their unique
traditional culture and lifestyle. Pak Lasmawan, in this first ever
Colorado-based exploration of Balinese history and life, will share
his deep love of his country through his personal insight into his
native country's concepts of unity and balance; the organized village
or Banjar; and the idea of connection as it relates to hierarchy,
nature, humanity and God. Pak Made will also lead the Tunas Mekar
Orchestra in traditional song and dance.
This is a rare opportunity to gain knowledge from a culture and people
who have a unique connection to life. Many feel the Balinese culture,
as reflected through ceremony, creativity, and community, can bring
enrichment to our own fractured western lifestyle.
Please join us at the Edgewalkers Institute's Dialogue Series and
explore the creative possibilities catalyzed by the convergence of
different viewpoints. The Edgewalkers Dialogue Series and most other
events are open to the public. For more information about upcoming
fall and winter events’ or membership in the Edgewalkers community,
please visit http://www.edgewalkers.com or contact Cynthia Kemper at

Description of September 10th Dialogue
Beckoning to westerners from the edge of a warm aquamarine sea on
the
other side of the world, lies an Asian island still shrouded in
mystery
and allure. A lush paradise that elicits visions of a country that
naturally evokes curiosity.... fascination.... introspection and
desire.
For those of us who've had the pleasure of visiting Bali,
Indonesia,
the mystery, beauty and deep spirituality we've found there touches
our
soul and lingers forever. But for those few who dig a bit deeper,
one
soon discovers there is much more to this island culture than
exotic
allure. The lessons of Balinese culture are not only for the heart
and
soul*they're for the mind as well.
In a culture where everyone is an artist*and all play a critical
part
in the Balinese community*creativity and a lifelong commitment to
living
in connection to others, Earth and God are deeply held principles
integral to the Balinese concept of the village or Banjar. As a
complex
tapestry of spirituality and practicality, the Banjar is actually
the
foundation of
Balinese life and society. Deep within the Balinese soul, their
innate
understanding of cooperation has much to teach us in our
fragmented
western world. It is to this learning*a learning that our world
needs
desperately*that we dedicate this magical evening of sharings,
culture,
music, Agama Hindu ceremony, dialogue and much more.
Here is just a small taste of the evening the honorable Pak Made
Lasmawan and the talented members of the local Denver Gamelan
orchestra
and Banjar have in store:
The education of a Balinese child begins with the introduction of
the
concept of the 'Catur Guru,' the *Four Teachers' who provide all
the
instruction necessary to transform the child into an adult member of
the
village. These four are the 'Guru Rupaka,' the child's parents,
the
'Guru Pengajian,' the village school teachers, the 'Guru Wisesa,'
the
local civil
authorities, and the 'Guru Swadiaya,' the Balinese Hindu deities
(including the supreme God, Sanghyang Widi Wasa). These four sources
of
learning occupy an ascending hierarchy, with the Gods' teachings
preeminent above the others.
These three elements of human social life are called 'Tri Kaya
Parisuda.' The goal of this instructional path is to bring about
an
agreement in philosophy, conversing and acting among the village
populace.
Possessing an education built on this foundation is what permits
the
Balinese to pass successfully through a world of 'Rwa Bhineda,' or
diametric opposites. The Balinese see our world as made up of
countless
of these opposing pairs, such as male and female, day and night,
and
most of all, good and evil. Believing the safety of their lives
and
society to depend on a continuing balance of all these forces,
Balinese
direct their prayers toward this end. [To make these principles
even
more relevant, Pak Made will discuss this principle in relationship
to
the recent terrorist bombing of the Kuta nightclub.]
To pursue this path is to realize a steady progress of 'Jati Diri,'
the
individual's spiritual essence. And for every individual Balinese,
the
most powerful expression of 'Jati Diri' is full participation in
the
village political structure, or Banjar, and in the spirit of
communal
work, or 'Gotong Royong.'
Please join us in this first ever Colorado-based rare exploration
of
Balinese history and life; concepts of unity and balance; the
organized
village or Banjar community; and the idea of connection as it relates
to
hierarchy, nature, humanity and God. Come learn what the Balinese
mean
when they say, "The circle of life never stops," and join us
in the
never-ending global circle of life.
Master Balinese drummer and composer I Made Lasmawan was born in
the
village of Bangah, in the Baturiti region of the regency of
Tabanan,
Bali in 1958. Strongly influenced by his family and involved in the
arts
since childhood, he received degrees in the Traditional Performing
Arts
of Bali (KOKAR, Denpasar, Bali, 1977) and Traditional Indonesian
Music
[STSI, Surakarta, Central Java, 1983). He is a prolific composer
who
taught Balinese music at STSI until 1990, when he was invited to
San
Diego State University to teach Javanese and Balinese music. Living
in
Colorado since 1993 as
Artist-in-Residence with Gamelan Tunas Mekar, Pak Lasmawan also
teaches
Balinese gamelan at Colorado College, Naropa University, the
University
of Wyoming and the University of Colorado. Pak Lasmawan has
traveled
throughout the world, and has taught throughout the U.S. He is
accompanied in the United States by his wife (a Balinese dancer),
Ni
Ketut Marni and his sons, Putu Tangkas Adi Mayena (dancer and
musician),
Ade and Aji. When in Bali, Pak Lasmawan continues to play a lead role
in
the development of his home village's musical orchestras.
Michael Fitts, an integral part of the Colorado music community,
is
president of Tunas Mekar, Inc., a Colorado nonprofit 501(c)(3)
organization, and respected founder of the "Synergy Music Group,
Inc.",
a music promotion and entertainment company and jazz label that
has
recorded some 30 leading jazz projects.
Dane Terry, a founding member of the Gamelan Tunas Mekar, lived
his
early years on a U.S. Army post on a mountain in northern
Ethiopia.
There he listened to Coptic drumming, American parade music, his
father's Stan Getz albums, and his mother's church organ playing. He
has
resisted categorization ever since. Dane has played timpani with
the
Pepperdine University Symphony, drums in the Arizona State Marching
Band
and rock-n-roll guitar in Antarctica where he was a field
engineer for
Antarctica Support Associates.
Please Note: Advance reservations [and cancellations] must be
received
2 days before event. Space is limited!

everyone for your tremendous support!
THE RAMAYANA BALLET
An Ancient Myth Comes To Life in the Modern Age
Love and loyalty, hatred and jealousy, justice and revenge -
has the world changed much over the centuries? Come hear Prince
Rama's story-Bali style-and his desire for peace in a world of
conflict on Saturday, May 17th, 7:30 PM, at the Cleo Parker Robinson
Dance Theatre.
Thanks in part to a grant from the Denver SCFD, nine
authentic Balinese dancers will dramatize a portion of the Ramayana
story (the entire story would take many hours to tell), five of whom
will be visiting from Los Angeles and Chicago, and four who are
family members of Artist-In-Residence, I Made Lasmawan. Lasmawan
lives in Colorado Springs and teaches at Colorado College and
throughout the Rocky Mountain region. The dancers include: Ni Ketut
Marni, Ni Nyoman Erawati, Ni Sagung Mirah Kertayuda, I Gusti Ngurah
Kertayuda, I Wayan Susila, I Nyoman Cerita, Ni Sagung Chika
Kertayuda, I Putu Tankas Adi Mayena and I Made Tangkas Ade Wijaya.
Other program pieces include Pak Lasmawan's newest
composition "Subak," the "Kebyar Trompong" dance, and "Catur Angurit."
This promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You can
witness the Ramayana Ballet on May 17th, 7:30 PM, at the Cleo Parker
Robinson Dance Theatre, 119 Park Avenue West. Tickets for this
one-night-only event are $15 general admission and $10 for seniors,
students and children 12 and under. Seating is limited. Tickets may

information visit http://www.tunasmekar.org or call (303) 433-3782.
How did Denver come to host the premier of this extraordinary
evening of music and dance? For fifteen years, Denver's own gamelan
(an Indonesian orchestra of percussive and melodic instruments) has
been presenting concerts to the public after consistent and focused
weekly rehearsals under a Balinese Artist-In-Residence. The Ramayana
Ballet is the culmination of another concerted effort to present
high-quality cross-cultural productions of Balinese music and dance.
Cross-cultural? The Ramayana is an ancient myth told in many Asian
countries - Indonesia included. Bali is the only Hindu island in the
largely Islamic nation.
Thank you to our sponsors including Denver's Mayor Wellington
Webb and the Denver Mayor's Office of Art, Culture and Film; Synergy
Media group (http://www.synergymediagroup.net); Thai Association of
Colorado; Ibu Phyllis Tremmel, "Mother" of the gamelan tradition in
the Rocky Mountain Region; and Ten Thousand Villages, Denver
(http://www.villages.ca, click on "stores" then search "co" for
address/directions and upcoming events). Without there support, this
performance would not have been possible.
Gamelan Tunas Mekar, founded in 1988, is a group of 20 musicians from
Denver, Boulder and Colorado Springs. Balinese gamelan music is
highly rhythmic, utilizing various gongs, drums and metallophones, or
gangsas, (bronze bars suspended over bamboo resonators and struck
with a wooden mallet). Bamboo flutes, or sulings, embellish the
melodies of the metallophones, which are encased in ornate
hand-carved jackfruit wood. The large semaradana orchestra is
actually two orchestras in one and has to be heard to be believed.
The root of the word gamelan means 'to hammer', and it is truly
powerful and exciting to hear 20 people 'hammer' heavy bronze bars in
synchronized rhythms and accompanied by the sweet sound of bamboo
flute, singing - Bali style - and grounded by large gongs.

THE RAMAYA BALLET: Love and loyalty, hatred and jealousy,
justice and revenge, and war: what are the origins of these
forces? The epic myths of ancient civilizations provide clues.
The Ramayana is set thousands of years ago in what is now
India. Rama, a prince wrongly disinherited, is exiled to a deep
forest with his wife and brother. Their peace is shattered when a
neighboring king abducts Rama's young bride. Aided by nature
and magic, the brothers wage war to rescue the captive
princess. Rama's story remains essential: a desire for peace in
a world of conflict.

The shadow puppet plays, known as wayang kulit are popular
not only in Bali but throughout Indonesia. Far more than mere
entertainment, the wayang kulit is an extremely important vehicle
of culture, serving as carrier of myth, morality play, and form of
religious experience rolled into one.
The puppets are believed to have great spiritual power, and are
"brought to life" by special ceremonies performed by the dalang,
the puppet master and storyteller. The dalang is a man of many
talents: he must have a repertoire of hundreds of stories, play
the music, have a flair for showmanship, perform the necessary
sacred rituals, and also know how to make the intricate, flat,
leather puppets. Through the puppets, he relates the story line
(which the audience usually already knows by heart) and
embellishes the universal themes through improvisational
asides incorporating the local village's gossip or happenings.
These asides are usually hilarious to the audience.
The function of the shadow play is to educate as well as amuse,
by portraying good and evil, with good always triumphing,
although evil is never destroyed. In Hindu thought, good and evil
are necessary parts of the whole and must exist in equilibrium.
In Bali, shadow plays are extremely popular, with performances
given during sacred temple ceremonies, private family
ceremonies, and in the villages, just for fun. A typical
performance can last six hours or more, often ending at
daybreak. The audience, including little children, sits on the
ground, enthralled, for the entire story. Although involving much
horseplay and slapstick comedy in the lighthearted Balinese
fashion, every aspect of the shadow play has mystical overtones,
symbolism, and esoteric meanings. - Notes by Julia Ingersoll
