acclaimed UCSB faculty flutist JILL FELBER will be seminar leaders for the UCSB FLUTE FOCUS 2009,

UCSB's FLUTE FOCUS is a three-day seminar with morning and afternoon master classes featuring
specially selected "Young Artists," twenty outstanding young students and professionals from all over
the country. Also featured are two evening recitals with seminar leaders, MARINA PICCININI and
JILL FELBER. The master classes are open to the public with an auditor's fee of $50 per session;
the evening recitals on July 9 and 10 are free and open to the public.
The master classes will be held July 8, 9 and 10 from9 a.m.-noon and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
in Karl Geiringer Hall (Music 1250) in the UCSB Department of Music.
UCSB flutist Jill Felber will perform on Thursday, July 9 at 8 p.m. in UCSB Karl Geiringer Hall
(Music Room 1250). She will be joined by recent UCSB graduates - flutists Calisa Hildebrand and Alison Hazen Olsen, and guest pianist Dianne Frazer in works by Higdon, Clarke, Holland, Monteverdi, and Korde. Admission is free.
Marina Piccinini will perform on Friday, July 10 in a GALA RECITAL with UCSB flutist Jill Felber
and guest pianist Dianne Frazer at 8 p.m. in Karl Geiringer Hall (Music Room 1250). The program will
feature works by J.S. Bach, Poulenc, Jolivet, Carter, and Folio. Admission is free.
Since making her acclaimed debuts in New York's Town Hall, London's Southbank Centre, and Tokyo's Suntory Hall, MARINA PICCININI has been in demand both as a recitalist and soloist with orchestras in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Japan. She has been soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Tokyo Symphony, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Saint Louis Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, the Hannover Symphony in Germany, Ravenna Chamber Orchestra in Italy and the Vienna Chamber Soloists; as well as the Cincinnati, New World, Toronto, Vancouver, and Milwaukee symphony orchestras, and has worked with such conductors as Seiji Ozawa, Pierre Boulez, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Gianandrea Noseda.
The Washington Post commented, "Talented and gorgeous in equal measure." Gramophone Magazine said, "Marina Piccinini's flute-playing is very special, her lyrical phrasing cool, exquisitely shaped and with an underlying delicate sensuality."
Marina Piccinini performs in recitals worldwide, with recent appearances in London's Wigmore Hall, Tokyo`s Casals Hall, the Kennedy Center in Washington, and the Mozart Saal in Vienna's Konzerthaus. Deeply committed to the music of the present, recent seasons have been highlighted by significant world premiere performances of concerti and solo works by Michael Colgrass, Lukas Foss, Michael Torke, John Harbison, Marc-André Dalbavie, and Roberto Sierra.

Marina Piccinini's career was launched when she won First Prize in the CBC Young Performers Competition in Canada, and a year later, First Prize in New York's Concert Artists Guild International Competition. In 1989 she was cited by Musical America as a "Young Artist to Watch," and in 1991 she became the first flutist to win a coveted Avery Fisher Career Grant from Lincoln Center.
Marina Piccinini began her flute studies in Toronto with Jeanne Baxtresser and received her BM and MM degrees from the Juilliard school where she studied with the legendary flutist Julius Baker. She also worked with Aurele Nicolet in Switzerland. Ms. Piccinini frequently gives master classes around the world and in September, 2001, joined the faculty of the Peabody Conservatory of Music.
JILL FELBER is Professor of Flute in the UCSB Department of Music. She has been hailed for her "beautifully finished performances" by The Detroit News and has been praised byMusical America for her "handsome performance." Jill Felber has performed solo recitals, chamber music, and concertos on four continents and has held residencies in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia, Mexico, France, Switzerland, Great Britain and the United States. An enthusiastic promoter of new music, Ms. Felber has inspired many composers to write solo and chamber works for her and is currently engaged in many commissioning projects. She has premiered over three hundred works for the flute and has released world premiere recordings for Centaur Records, CRI and Neuma Records. Holding degrees from the University of Michigan and Bowling Green State University, Ms. Felber has taught on the faculties of Ohio University, Capital University and Wright State University.
