Thanks for the sincereness Allen. I must confess that I haven't seen the gEarls in awhile, I've seen many iterations of the lineup. KC Groves is the constant, and she deserves great kudos for delivering this music in any form it takes. I'm with you, go out and see the show, buy the CDs, and have a great time.

Well, Uncle Earl came and conquered Bowling Green and received a standing ovation. Instrumentally, they were great, vocally, they were good, but suffered a little road fatigue. They played my favorite, Sugar Babe, and Kristin's Crayola Doesn't make a color, but most of the set were numbers that I had not heard them perform before. The crowd really enjoyed a number that was about Bowling Green. Stephanie Coleman was Super on the fiddle! Bryn Davies not only did a great job on bass, but she augmented the group vocally as well. She has worked so much with the gEarls that she fits like a glove. I know that no one likes change, but in my 60+ years I know that bands come and go and that nothing lasts forever. I pesonally miss the vocal harmony that was on Uncle Earl's first CD. But Uncle Earl still has the electricty and the talent to keep my interest and I will continue to buy their CDs and catch their concerts whenever I can. Allen

I know for one I stay connected to get my news on Uncle Earl. I can't wait to
see the new lineup. I hope KC manages to get the rest of the g'Earls to come
back home for visit in Denver or somewhere on the Front Range.
So yes the Yahoo news group is still be monitored by some us quiet ones. KC and
Kristen both have an eternal fan.
We do check in and appreciate all the kind words and encouragement.
It's true we're back out on the road, performing for a tour that we've been talking about doing for a long time. It's called the American Revival tour and it also features The Dixie Bee Liners & Sierra Hull & Highway 111. We're having a great time with the other bands and of course we love being on stage, keeping a bit of that old time sound alive. Kristin has been writing a bunch and we're excited to do more originals. We have seasoned g'Earlfriend Bryn Davies on bass and fiddler Steph Coleman & Paula Bradley on banjo. Paula's played with Bruce Molsky and Tony Trischka and has a vast knowledge of old time tunes and musicians as well as a lot of talent. Steph is simply the best old time fiddler we've heard in a long time and she's super funny and sweet as well. We're having a great time.
Please check out our schedule and come to a show or if we're not playing near you, send someone you know!
Sincerely,
KC Groves

music's most buzzed-about bands, Uncle Earl
Hell Yeah!
Hartmut from Hannover, Germany, here! After years of lurking on this list and
enjoying UE recordings, it's about time to come out as now it DOES look like
finally a dream will come true: Can't wait to see the G'Earls over here!!!
Just in case You haven't seen this clip of young Sierra jamming with ol' Sam

Greetings to the G'Earls and all their friends on this list from over the pond,
"Rock On!" ;-)

Hell Yeah!!!! Fact is, I'm going to see them perform in two weeks on their tour with the Dixie Bee-Liners and Sierra Hull. Then, I'll also see them on New Years Eve with the Infamous Stringdusters. Can't Wait!!
Last night at the Birchmere, Mary and I had the distinct pleasure of seeing a
reconfigured Uncle Earl during a brilliant evening of music.
KC has done a marvelous job filling the gaps left by Abby & Rayna: a little bit
of the familiar (chestnuts) to establish a baseline, then highlighting the
talents of the new members to give the band a refreshing new personality. We
loved it.
From the behind the bright lights of the stage, KC asked the audience if the
Yahoo Group is still out there. I yelled "Hell Yeah" from the darkness, but I
doubt if she heard me. So I ask you all again .. "Are you still out there????"

I just checked their tour schd. and the EarlGirls are coming to Bowling Green,
KY on 11-17. I have seen them up in Louisville, KY Owensburo, KY and Nashville,
TN. You can bet I am going to see them in my town. Bowling Green is along I-65
about half-way between Louisville and Nashville. My son is in his Jr.year at
Western Kentucky University majoring in Physics. If anyone has any questions
about the town, Email me and I will happy to try and find an answer for you.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Uncle Earl when they come around to the Birchmere.
On my way back from Clifftop, I stopped in to see them at High Rocks. They had Stephie with them, but Rachael Eddy was filling in for Paula Brady. Bryn was playing bass. They started off by rocking out on Sugar Babe, then went right into a fiddle duet by Kristin and Stephie. By that point I was hooked. Stephie isn't Rayna, of course, but she's a damn fine fiddler and the music is clearly in very good hands (she shined in a duet with guest Jefferson Hamer). Plus, it looks like there's going to be as much fun onstage as ever.
There were some new songs, including one I really loved by Kristin that I think was called something like "My Baby Sent Me a Letter."
It was also a treat to see Rachael Eddy. Even though she's from just over the mountain in West Virginia, I've never had a chance to see her before. If you have the opportunity, don't miss her.

I see it more as a personnel change, also. KC is really the only original member and she plays music with various other people. I don't think Uncle Earl is really a fulltime gig for either KC or Kristin and it certainly is far from the primary gig for Paula. Stephanie is an old time fiddler for sure but she's much younger and working on getting herself established in the old time circuits.
Abby is moving in different musical directions and spending more time in/on China. Plus, I believe both are now in long term, commited relationships. I believe that Abby and Bela are gettin' hitched, if it's not already happened. Rayna and her feller just moved back to Asheville which means more old time fiddling from her.
I'm looking forward to seeing the G'Earls twice before the new year. Gotta get my tickets for NYE show of Stringdusters and G'Earls, AKA String of Earls, or is it G'Earldusters?????? Wahoo!!!!!
When Rayna and Dan Gellert hosted an Old Time jam at the Chicago Folk & Roots
Fest a few weeks back, Rayna was sporting a fancy new ring on her finger. Don't
know if that has anything to do with it, but it's a definite possibility. And I
think Abby's musical path is leading elsewhere. I don't really think you would
call this a breakup. The group has gone through personel changes in the past.
Stephanie is an Old Time fiddler, and Paula, who I don't know anything about,
seems to be firmly rooted as well.

Hey everyone!
Can anyone tell me what caused the Uncle Earl split and why it happened? One
guy said last week or so that Abby and Rayna could not be replaced. All the
recent UE emails seem to be excited about the new line up. To me, Rayna was the
traditional oldtime heart and soul of the group. I worry what direction in music
the girls will go now with Rayna. Maybe Paula Bradley will keep that traditional
direction going. Hope one of you guys can tell me exactly what caused the split
in the group. Thanks.

Two shows with the Stringdusters at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago on New Years Eve. 7:00 and 10:00. Tickets go on sale to the public this Friday.
I had fun last week watching the Rayna & Stephie (aka previous and current UE fiddle players) sitting side by side, playing twin fiddle for a huge square dance in Asheville, NC... Paul Brown and Paul Kovac on banjos, Carol Elizabeth Jones and Susie Goehring on guitars, Jeff Keith on mandolin and a bass player who was not known to me... Unbelievable energy! Onward Uncle Earl, and band members past and present!
As best I can find, here are the upcoming Uncle Earl shows, starting with one
this coming weekend in West Virginia.

Thanks for posting these Phil... Stipulating that there's no such thing as replacing Rayna & Abbie, I'm really looking forward to the music this new lineup will make...
I know Stephie a little bit and I think she'll be a great addition to UE...
And Paula... In addition to her Run Mountain gig, she used to be in the Rhythm Rats, a great band with fiddler Kenny Jackson, and the one time I saw her play live she was the guitar player in a trio called Jawbone with Tony Trischka and Bruce Molsky... a gig which speaks for itself I'd say...

there was something of a preview a few months back at Toad in Cambridge, when the
"Spongy Cactus" lineup included Kristin, Stephanie, Jefferson Hamer and
Charlie Rose in "under the radar" concert #1.
Seen them rotate through bass players according to availability, but was hoping the four on "She Waits. . ." and "Waterloo, TN" would endure. Such are the vagaries of professional musical ensembles.
Here's hoping a new studio effort isn't too long in coming. Oh yeah, and there was something about a live release in the works - anyone know anything about status of that?

I guess it's out of print again. You can hear clips of songs here
http://mog.com/music/Uncle_Earl/She_Went_Upstairs
Doesn't seem to be available for digital downloads either. Amazon.com has some
used copies for very high prices here
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00008WT47/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condit\
ion=used
But it looks like you can get a used copy from the UK for much cheaper than
that, though still expensive with the exchange rate like it is.

It had been out of print when K.C. had some made a couple of years back. If
there's enough demand, maybe she'll do it again. It's a great CD. A little
different from the more recent Uncle Earl. Fewer fiddle tunes, and many more
singing songs.
