You have a brother named, Jim? JAMC connection?
One of my favorite Marc moments was when I dragged my parents to see WOV at
the Coach House. Marc went completely bongo at the end of Ring of Fire- even
more than usual. The look on my mom's face was complete horror. Plus Marc
always looks dead on cool when he's playing. If some wanna be cool guy like
Mickey Rourke could play the guitar he'd wanna have that swagger. The Fender
jag, the horse and armadillo stickers and that facial contortion stuff is
perfection. My parents who like all the parent kinda stuff like James Taylor
or Baccarach ... just dug the whole WOV scene and the music to which I
subjected 'em. First song I tried to play on guitar, which made my mom nuts,
was can't make love
It's hard to explain why I love marc's guitar so much. But when I first
started playing, I took lessons for a week ( don't we all take the mandatory
week course before saying 'bullshit' I'm gonna play and that's it!)... Anyhow
my teacher was one of these Clapton freaks with a Clapton shrine on his wall
and one of those goofy guitar posters complete with schematics and tidbits
about Les Paul or whatever
I asked him if he could help me pick out the guitar for Museums and Mona, I
think? Anyhow, he just kinda sneered in disdain- "oh , yeah,,, anyone can
play that Marlboro man sound- That's a piece of cake" . Yeah , right, bro!
That's the thing- the nuances in that picking twang style Marc plays which
are busted up by his full out assault of some Sartre-like nightmare bar chord
freak out strum like in Red Light can't be done by anyone else. That's the
kinda music Ali`ce must have heard when she was falling down the rabbit hole!
Such a higher level then some burn out technical player classic rock dude
Let me see,,, loved Marcs painted hi top shoes at Madam Wongs- looked great
with the J Cash t-shirt. How he cracked Andy in the face with his guitar at
the scream and the hair do he had going when WOV had the guest bit on that
comedy show playing country of man.
From the rippin' beggar blue sky to that carpenters cover with Johnette, his
playing is all over the place but perfectly in place at the same time. I
dunno.. hard to explain, but that guitar of marc's is always a rush AND EVERY
PERSON I ever dragged out to a WOV show really dug Marc's playing. I put him
up there at the top of my favorite three
Marc
Will Sergeant Bunnymen
William Reid Marychain
viva WOV never had more fun in my life than seeing these guys play and
marc's guitar was always the best part
Rich ...shivering on cahuenga and yucca
