Hey folks,
I received the following from someone doing an article on Voodoo. They
wanted to include WOV so they sent the following questions. Please
feel free to send your own responses to the following to Ursula at
u1971@.... She need the info before monday so time is of the
essence. Thanks for your input and remember to send your responses to
the email address listed not the mail list.
Cheers,

Hi, John,
Thanks for getting back to me so soon.
Here my questions;
1) How did the band come up with the name WOV? How long has the band
been known as WOV?
2) Have they researched or tried to learn about voodoo?
3) Does anyone in the band know anything about voodoo?
4) Does anyone in the band practice voodoo?
5) What was the band's opinion of voodoo BEFORE they named themselves
WOV?
6) What is the band's opinion NOW about voodoo?
7) Has the band experienced backlash because of their name? You know
folks thinking that WOV kill chickens and conjure satan during
performances.
8) Do they deal with kooks who take the name too literally? What was
the weirdest example?
9) What is the demographic make-up of the fans of WOV? Hippies? WASPS?
Goths?
10) This question is for you John or any friend(s) of yours. What is
your opinion of voodoo? And where did you get that opinion?
That's all. If you can get back to me on these questions by this Sunday
or next Monday at the latest, I'd appreciated it. Also, would it be
okay to mention the website and give the address in the article?
Thanks
Ursula Watson

HOWDY !!!!! KING RICHARD HERE....
So I am surfing around, and someone had a link to a
YAHOO chat room. Thought I would give it a try.
I , at this point, hoped I do not hook up with a 13 year
old BACKSTREET BOYS fan in the music chat.
a music chat? so I go. I am just in time to see a KISS
fan threating a non-KISS fan with the use of a uncle
in the mofia to do unspeakable acts to him for saying
such things about the said make-up wearing band.
To change the subject, I thought I would bring up......
MUSIC.
Some one asked me what kind of music I liked. I said
80's music, most of all, a band called WALL OF
VOODOO.... they tell me "yeah, their a swing band
right???"
It was at this point that I starting to think I would have
faired better with the 13 year old BACKSTREET
BOYS fan.

Hello lads and lasses
Great idea getting the Department of Crooks mp3s on the web . I bought the
album immidiately , because I think Marc is such an awsome guitarist . I was
awaiting it's release for several months . I will varify , that if you
really like that twangy , feedbackie , stylish guitar playing that is always
featured on WOV records , you should attempt to obtain a copy of this
classic disc . Also , (Marc fans) you should seek out Pretty & Twisted ,
featuring Marc , and Johnette Napolitano .(Concrete Blonde) Yet another
demonstration of Marc's incredible , one of a kind style .
Question: Does anybody know if Marc is busy with any other projects ? It
was rumored , that he had sold all his equipment , and was set to quit the
music biz , before the release of D.O.C's. I think that would be a damn
shame .
For the record , I like WOV & all the solo off-shoots , more then allot of
stuff that is being churned out by the music business today .At least sample
those mp3's . And , send a hyper-link with the address of the page that
carries them , to your freinds :o)

Two things re: Department of Crooks
First:
Department of Crooks, (who you will recall is the latest band that
Marc Moreland has recorded with), have granted us the right to post
some mp3's off their album "Plan 9 From Las Vegas" You can download
them at:
<a href="http://www.wallofvoodoo.com/mp3's.htm"></a>
If you haven't heard DOC yet this is your chance. You'll be glad you
did. If you don't know what MP3 is, breifly it is a compression
technique that allows you to get near cd quality sound in a file that
is about 1/10th the normal size of a song file. It is the future of
recorded music. on the internet.
Second:
The Department of Crooks cd "Plan 9 from Las Vegas" is now out of
print. However, it can still be easily had either locally or over the
internet. If you like the tunes you should get the CD now before it
is all gone.

Quick update: Andy is currently presenting, very successfully, previews of a
musical he's written, "White Trash Wins Lotto!". which is sort of a Gilbert-
and-Sullivan sounding telling of the tale of "a character very much like Axl
Rose." There's been international press on it... a web search will turn up
quite a bit of information. Up to now, he's only performed it here in LA at
Largo, but we just got word that the musical will be staged twice in March at
the US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen.
Speaking of Wall of Voodoo CDs, I lent my copies of the last three to someone
about a year ago and I can't remember who! As you can imagine, this is rather
depressing...

Hello all,
First of all, welcome to all the new people who have recently joined this
list. There hasn't been alot for us to say lately, but we really are still
here! And hello to you too, Robert. You're not the only one who saw the
recent Pop Up Video and Where Are They Now bits on VH1. I saw them myself
over the last weekend. I was just surfing around and paused on VH1 at
opportune moments.
Secondly, for all of you interested, I found and bought another Dark
Continent CD. To be fair, I've put it up for auction at www.ebay.com. I see
someone else there also has a Happy Planet CD up for auction, but that one
closes today so you'd better hurry if you want to catch it. I'm negotiating
with someone right now to get another Happy Planet CD myself, so you may
see that up for auction at ebay eventually as well. I'm not trying to make
a huge profit on these, just at least get back what I paid for them.
Thirdly, Robert asked if the second incarnation of Wall of Voodoo was good
in its own right. Yes it was. Just pick up a copy of Seven Days in
Sammystown and you'll be convinced. It's on sale right now for $8.99 at
www.towerrecords.com.
Ok, time for me to shut up and head off for work. Talk to you all soon!!

First off My name is Robert Brammer, I became interested in Wall of
Voodoo after seeing the wonderful video for Mexican Radio on VH1's Pop
Up Video (yeah, i admit it I watch pop up video).
After that I went out and bought Stan Ridgeway's, The Songs that made
this Country Great (because it was the only one they had in stock).
And I really liked it!
My other music interests include Some old Punk (The dead kennedys,
Richard Hell, The new york dolls.), Chuck Berry, just about anything
Wire has ever done (particularly 154), Plastic Venus, and Oracle.
The biggest problem with my music interests is that the bands that I
like are either disbanded or don't play live....so I never get to go
to shows (though I did see the Sex Pistols re-union show in
Memphis...unfortunately it was boring...unless you like having large
security thugs force you to remain in your seat through an entire
show!).
I just read somewhere that there is a second incarnation of wall of
voodoo with a new singer? is it good in it's own right or just a pale
attempt to carry on?
Marc Moreland was also recently featured on a "where are they now"
show on VH1 (no really i don't watch much VH1, really!) and he
mentioned making soundtracks for "interesting pornos." Are the pornos
really interesting? I'm not a puritan i'll rent them if they're not
only just out and out hardcore sex.
In an attempt to contribute something, seeing as how Wall of Voodoo
seem to attract the "cinematic" crowd, particularly people who are
supposed to be ghouls with a sense of humor, I recently rented a
movie called Cemetary Man that was very interesting, I suggest you
rent it.
That's about it.
Thanks for listening to me ramble,
Robert.
I met Marc Moreland for the first time a few months ago in the Northern
California area where I live and I couldn't believe what a totally great
guy he was!
He mentioned that he was working on releasing a new solo album
containing some of his latest material. From what I remember, it was
going to be a little dark waveish-
Has anybody heard about this new album? Unfortunately, I haven't seen
Marc in a month or so and I'm very much looking forward to a hearing a
new release from a such longtime WOV member.

Good choice! By the way, the dog's name is "Bruiser" ---- at least I think
it is ---- Chas mentioned the band-mascot's name in a radio interview aired
in Los Angeles around the time Andy joined the group. One can pick up a
"Bruiser" in Tijuana....my brother gave me one of these ceramic dog coin

Don't forget that Bruiser can also be found on the back of the "Happy

Greetings all!
A somewhat belated Happy New Year to all of you here an the list. I just
thought I'd drop you all a note telling you about what's "Coming soon to a
web site near you...." I have officially registered the Wall of Voodoo
Webring with the Webring.Org people. I had hoped to get all the details
ironed out over the weekend so those of you with websites who want to be
part of the ring can join, but my computer was not cooperating with me so
there has been a delay. I think I've wrestled the computer back into
submission and I hope to have all the details taken care of by the end of
next weekend. I'm of the opinion I need to win the damn lottery so I can
stop working and spend all my time messing around on the internet!!! But,
until that happens, I gotta do the work thing so I can't get stuff done as
quickly as I'd like. Bear with me, folks. I'm organizing as fast as I can!!
For the webring logo I plan to use the dog from the EP/Index Masters cover.
Or do any of you have a better idea for a logo? If so, let me know. I'm
always open to suggestions.
One more thing before I shut up...welcome to all the newcomers to the list.
Feel free to post anything you want to say or ask any questions you may
have. Us oldtimers are a fairly friendly sort. Best wishes to everyone for
a happy and prosperous new year! I'm outta here!!!

Hey, it's great that other people out there are liking The Way I Feel
Today. I've been listening to it for quite awhile now... I got an
advance copy earlier this year and recently purchased the "official"
version. There are a few small differences between the old and new
versions of the CD... mostly in the little background squeeks and
squonks. Put it this way, the offiial release sounds more like a record
of standards made for visiting extra-terrestrials! Not all the added
touches to the official release are weird though... for example, Old Man
River now has the sound of a steamboat at the beginning of the song and
some added harmonica (these were not heard on the earlier release).
Fans already got a good idea of Stan's vocal range on songs like Gone
the Distance and Underneath the Big Green Tree from his last solo album
but his work here will really blow you away (check out the
above-mentioned Old Man River, I Concentrate on You, My Baby Just Cares
for Me, and even My Way... the only song I am not really all that crazy
about, just because it has become so tacky when sung by other
performers). Come on and give this record a try... pick up one of the
last few remaining copies while you still can!!!
So much for my sales pitch... anyway, it's great to see stuff happening
on this list again. It's been too quite for too long.

Thought I should get my two cents in on Stan's latest recording "The Way I Feel
Today" as I received it in the mail a few weeks back. I'm a Stan fan, an Andy
fan, a
Pretty and Twisted fan and a Department of Crooks fan. I'm not biased to Andy
or
Stan, they are just different in my book.
Soooo, I got Stan's new CD and I gave it a listen. I was a little skeptical as
I've
never *really* been driven to own my own copy of "Send in the Clowns" (by ANY
artist). But I must say, it's like coming back to an old friend. I like the
CD! I
like the tunes! Granted it is different than a standard Stannard CD. But with
my
recent (past three years) interest in Billie Holiday, Louis Prima and Nina
Simone, I
was ready and willing to pay a large price to hear Stan sing some oldies.
I don't think the CD is for everyone but I do think it's a great addition to the
collection (much like buying Devo's 'Easy Listening' to satisfy the devout Devo
collector's need). Stan puts a lot of feeling and personality into these old
songs
and since I know the words to most I enjoy singing it around the house.
So there's my take. Take it or leave it. Way to go Stan for doing what you
want to
do.
Hi,

i only have that index masters disc . i never saw them either :o( but
alas , i have seen stan twice . i live on the east coast , and would
drop everything if stan , andy , or marc(d.o.c) would come through town
. (since you got my attention ) i always thought if stan stuck around
for at least one more album , none of these guys would be as obscure as
they seem to be today . the down side of that thought is we wouldn't
have sammy's town (?) food for thought , i guess . good luck in your
persuit to find some stuff .

I was lucky enough to have received an advance copy from Stan a few
months back... and I love it! I've always listened to a lot of
standards, jazz, and big band music (along with all the other weirdness,
pop, electronica, soundtracks, etc. I listen to... and I work at an
opera company, so there's all that opera too!)... and it's great to hear
Stan's take on all these crooning tunes. For those who are not fans of
this music, I think there are still enough Stan-like touches to make it
interesting. Much of the record sticks to traditional,
Sinatra-influenced arrangements with theremin-like keyboard noises
thrown into the mix at just the right times... it's all a lot of fun.
And Stan's voice is just outstanding on tracks like Old Man River, I
Concentrate on You, and If I Ruled The World. Well, that's my "thumbs
up"... hope everybody else gets a chance to hear this record and enjoy
it too.
> Interested to hear from you other folks what your other music interests

Recent CDs: Stan's Music For Film Sampler 98 (I'm a soundtrack buff...
Morricone, etc...); John Lurie's Fishing With John (you have to have
seen the accompanying television series for any of this music to make
sense); Matteo Salvatore's 13th century Italian Beggar's Songs; The
Exotic Moods of Les Baxter; The Best of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds;
Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. - The Clan in Chicago;
Mitchell Froom's Dopamine; Cannes Film Festival 50th Anniversary Album;
Stewart Copeland's soundtrack to John Water's Pecker (Stan Ridgway sings
a song called Don't Drop The Soap For Anyone Else But Me - courageous
move for a married man!)

Okay, I'll play along! Through high school (mid 1970s) I worshipped Alice
Cooper, Black Sabbath, ELP, and Deep Purple. By the early 1980s my tastes
had decidedly turned to new wave---Blondie, Devo, Ramones, OMD, Depeche
Mode, Gary Numan, Ultravox, The Smiths, Dead Kennedys---and, of course, my
all-time favorite---Wally Vadooski. The day I learned that the original
band broke up was a day of sadness for me. The new Wall of Voodoo with
Andy was great.....but fell far short of the magic and hypnotic sound
created by Stan and the boys.

Nice to see ya pop in, Jon. Can't say there's been a whole lot to post
anything about lately. The web site move seems to have worked quite well.
At least I've had no complaints yet. I did receive a rather risque picture
of Bruce from a kind soul that may or may not interest you all. I slapped
it up on the photo gallery at: http://members.xoom.com/vieuxdo/bruce1.htm
It's Bruce in his prime and I think the ladies will probably enjoy it more
than the men, but it's still a great photo.
On a Stan note, have any of you ordered his new "The Way I Feel Today"? I'd
be interested to know what you think of it if you have. I can't afford $25
for a copy even if it is Stan and comes with a signed picture. Gotta put
cat food on the table instead I'm afraid.
Well, that's about all I've got to say today. Anyone else have anything
interesting to impart??

Hello all,
Just wanted to start things off with a thank you to all you charter members
of this mailing list. To be honest, I didn't come up with this idea all on
my own. I subscribe to the Andy Prieboy Jazz Crowd mailing list and, when
Jazz Crowd's manager moved the list to OneList, I decided to check things
out. If you've surfed around OneList's site you'll see there seems to be a
mailing list for every interest known to man. And, if one isn't already
established, hell, you can start your own just like I did. I love the wall
that JtL has put up on his Wall of Voodoo site, but alot of the time I
forget to check it. I'm hoping this list can become an interesting place
for us fans of all things Voodoo to get together and express our opinions
be they bad, good or indifferent. And the best part is it comes right to
our email box and we don't have to remember to check anyplace else. I'm not
moderating this list. Anything you say will go straight out to all
subscribers unedited and uncensored. Try to remember that when you're posting.
Okay, I'm gonna shut up for now. If any of you have anything to say, feel
free to blurt it out. Have a good week to come!

A Wall of Voodoo mail list sounds like a great idea to me . I know the
internet has been helpful for obtaining information for other bands and
performers for whom information is hard to come by . Wall of Voodoo is
(to me) one of the greatest bands of all time . I think there career was
to short lived . Being on the east coast is even harder to get
information .
I think this list is really a good idea , and I hope everybody that
joins it will post what ever they can , as far as best memories ,
information at all on any of the former members,
or even just hypothetical thoughts . Anyway , it will be good just to
know that there are others who walk this earth that share an interest in
this one of a kind , rock phenomenon .
