The link is in Warren on the radio in Madrid. He does four songs. Very
beautifully.

It is a rather long show due to some of the translations involved. But it's
worth listening to as Warren does some songs live. It takes about 7 minutes
before you get to hear him talk so be patient.

The sound of muzak

recente uscita di "By A Thread".

risultare difficile scegliere a quale evento partecipare.

interessano, potete leggerli in calce a queste poche righe.
Mule".

I think - my thoughts only, of course - he has for a long long time wanted to
put out something that was outside of straight ahead rock music. While Mule is
very adaptable and can do a lot of music, they are seeped in rock and that is
good. I think with other players there is a freeing of the form and there can
be a whole different sound achieved. It's almost like asking why dub? Cause he
likes to play around with his music. I think that is the essential reason, but
that a solo cd is certainly something a lot of people have been waiting for.
(And he already did the solo acoustic cd with Bonnaroo, so why do it again?) I
know I look forward to hearing his do r&b, soul, straight ahead blues, cause he
does it all so good.

What I found most interesting about what the person had written was that the cd
would be all original soul, R&B compositions and no covers. Well I would love a
Warren cd that was about soul, R&B and possibly even a touch of gospel but all
songs he wrote. Well I'll buy it even if Soulshine is on it too. Ha ha.
(Though of course I prefer it not be on it. Cause you know it will be a song I
skip.)

I think it just gives him a chance to do other things and frankly, I think it is
high time he focuses on his own work.

Why do you suppose Warren would need to do a solo CD? Isn't the Mule pretty much
his own vehicle to do pretty much whatever he wants? I can understand if it was
an album of acoustic solo tunes, but if he's going to have a band sound, why not
just use the Mule guys, and have Porter sit in on a tune if he wants a Porter
bass sound?

Just curious...

My bad. I listened to the cd again last night as I was driving into the city,
and yes, it is "unwillingness."

I guess he means, unwillingness to live your life is just frozen fear.

I agree.

Funny how words can play tricks on your hearing. Or I should say your hearing
can play tricks on the words. LOL.

I thought the words were Loneliness is just frozen fear.

The lyrics on Mule.net read:

Unwillingness is just frozen fear.

While I think it is true, I think Warren is singing:

Loneliness is just frozen fear.

Am I hearing wrong?

If I'm not, I'm sure it was just a printing error. And not some subconscious comments from an earlier draft. :-)

Album Review: Gov't Mule - By A Thread

Album Review: Gov't Mule - By A Thread

Let me tell you, Jorgen Carlsson's got a heavy bass. By A Thread is Carlsson's debut as bassist with Gov't Mule, and together they bring about a sweet cohesion. Non-Allman Brother Warren Haynes leads his side-project band into and through a record of 11 tracks that are full of soulful, bluesy jam-band riffs, and a strange sincerity exuded by few.

Clearly, this record's gonna hold some southern rock. Exhibit A: "Railroad Boy", which is a mixture of rolling country rock and movie western showdown tune. On a more psychedelic note, "Monday Mourning Meltdown" allows for a visualization of the reason Gov't Mule takes over basically every summer music festival around the country. Echoing guitars, resonating keyboards, and a jaded, raspy moan are more than enough to paint a swirl of spirals in the mind's eye.

Haynes is an old school player, but he has tremendous skill in applying his guitar prowess and style to new releases in a fresh way. By A Thread's musical wingspan covers moody tracks like the aforementioned "Monday Mourning Meltdown" to the more summery "Frozen Fear", and touches on some pretty out there `60s era rock n roll in "Inside Outside Woman Blues #3". At times throughout this record, I am overwhelmed by the might of Waynes' guitar, and the hard-pressing, dragging sound of the band as a whole.

Gov't Mule is in fact, a very talented band with a good sound. While they might be considered underrated by some, they make just the kind of music that will stand the tests of time due to its tried-and-true style and quality of musicianship. Of course, this does not imply that they will be topping charts or hogging the limelight of the mainstream. Nevertheless, they continue to be one of the better rock jam bands around, and hopefully will continue to trudge on.

Rating: ★★★☆

They should go pop to a degree. A slicker sound, imho. But not too pop like
that chick that won all the cma awards. That is just processed cheese.

Grace's cd's have always had a very modern feel to them. She knows what she is
doing. She should get Santana to play on something. Maybe even Dave Matthews
and Missy Elliot or someone like that. I've always wanted Mule to so something
with a rapper or maybe that guy from the roots. DJ Logic is good but he's not
in the larger hip hop community deep enough. There is nothing wrong with having
a song that uses rap or hip hop imho. All music is valid. If it is done well.
I also thought Michael Franti and Warren on Play with Fire should have heard in
that community too. You know music is about blurring the edges of the limits of
style too.

Grace needs to have a big hit so she can get money to sustain her band on the
road. They should not have to be supported by VT cheese to eek out a meager
existence toiling on the roads in a crappy bus. Sorry. I know she isn't going
to sell out. That she has taken this project to someone else means it hasn't
gotten to the place she wants it. This is Somewhere was a very well produced
album and her moving to someone else now mid-production means she isn't getting
what she is looking for. She is right to listen to her instincts and make a
move. She is a good songwriter but that alone isn't enough.

Also, one thing about Grace is she has a voice that can go the commercial route.
She is choosing not to go into the adult contemporary wasteland and be the next
Snora Jones (who btw, has a lovely voice). Grace is sticking to rock. Maybe
she can do something with Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders? That would be
something. There is nothing wrong with some greater visibility in the larger
music scene.

You know I am someone who thinks outside the box.

I don't understand why fans are so afraid of these jam bands getting larger
audiences? It is the only way they can sustain on the road.

Or they end up on the road 300 days a year like Warren.

Looks like the weather finally took a turn for the better in Europe. Leave it
to the sunny Italians to make things brighter and a little warmer. The band has
covered a lot of miles and many many countries and they have seen a lot of cold
and gray weather. So the Italian stop had to have cheered them. :-) LOL.

It's been cold and gray here for a few days too. And very rainy. But tonight
I'm going to see Kevn Kinney and Drivin' n' Cryin' in the city so I am happier
than yesterday. I'm, also going to completely clean and paint my bedroom so I'm
not always just on the computer. I could go out to my frineds on the island but
I rather get some things accomplished in the house. It's my Taurean nature.

I hope everyone has a nice weekend. I know I'm going to like tonight's show. I
hope Kevn doesn't talk too much and rocks us out. I hate driving in this type
of weather, but hopefully most people will stay home because of it so the roads
won't be as crowded. I have to get my ass out of the house early for this one.
Just trying to get into the city for 7 is too early these days. But I know I'll
hear some really good music so I'm motivated. And I was so late to the last
show that I better not do it again or he won't like me. And I want him and
Shayni to like me.

That's because I like musicians that play from the heart. Warren and Kevn are
two musicians and song writers that play from the heart. I'm sure there are
other good song writers around, but to me, Warren and Kevn are the top in the
business right now. Top in terms of their writing skills and their ability to
transcend themselves and write intellectually of course, metaphorically for
sure, but most importantly, from the heart.

Both of them have new cds out right now. Mule's By A Thread and Kevn, with
Drivin' n' Cryin' with The Great American Bubble Factory. It's a very good cd.
It isn't as heavy of a rocker as Mule's cd, but still it has a really nice
country rock sound overall. There are at least five songs I really like on it.
I See Georgia sticks to me first as the best song on it. The rendition of Pre
-Approved Pre-Denied is great too. And there is a third song I like a lot too
but am blanking on the title.

Anyway, more later. No procrastination today.

Short of the resurrection of Jerry Garcia, the news could hardly be better on
the Grateful Dead front.

Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, once on opposite sides in the battle over the Dead's
treasure chest of recordings, have reconciled to the point of becoming bandmates
again. Further, which features Dark Star Orchestra guitarist John Kadlecik and
drummer Joe Russo of the Benevento/Russo Duo, debuted late this past summer.
Those dates went well enough that they've signed on for a short East Coast run
in mid-December.

Hopefully, the advent of Further doesn't spell an end to the Dead, the band that
features Weir and Lesh as well as the longtime Grateful Dead drumming corps of
Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart. That group's spring tour was almost unanimously
applauded, thanks to the spectacular work of singer-guitarist Warren Haynes.

GOV'T MULE - By A Thread

Blues-Rock poignant l'amricaine. Vous passerez une bonne heure de bonheur
son coute.

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals tap Mark Batson

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals have been planning a Spring 2010 release for
their new album, but recently the band switched producers, bringing in hip-hop
producer Mark Batson to help with the album. Batson also worked with the Dave
Matthews Band on their Stand Up release. The band was previously working with
T-Bone Burnett on the album, and it's unclear if they've scrapped those sessions
or if those sessions will be added to the work that they do with Batson. Batson
will get at least some songwriting credits on the album, according to Potter. I
don't know if they didn't listen to Stand Up or if they just think that they can
work better with Batson than DMB did, but I'm pretty worried about what this
change in producers will mean.

And not some subconscious
comments from an earlier draft. :-)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Out of the Rain. Nice compensation for the lack of Tracy Chapman. Isn't that
Brunella one beautiful young woman? I love that more and more beautiful young
women are following this band. It has made all the difference. It has been so
much less of a sausage fest at the shows for the last 2-3 years than ever
before. So many more women up front and in front of the guys instead of all
those big men. And so many more couples too. That is how the band has grown.
Yes, it is finally ok for Gov't Mule to have a LOT of beautiful young and yes
even beautiful older women swooning over the guys. Brunella's mom isn't too bad
looking either. ;-) LOL. LOL. LOL.
Like I always say: Take the F'in drugs out and put the SEX back into to rock
and roll. ;-) ;-) ;-)
We will all be dead soon enough. Might as well have a good time before you go.
;-)
Running on a Thread-Mule
By Dan Rys
Published: Thursday, November 12, 2009
Updated: Thursday, November 12, 2009
With Gov’t Mule, you know what you’re gonna get. Massive riffs, infectious
grooves, and a ton of swagger accompany every Mule release, and By A Thread, the
band’s latest album released October 27 on Evil Teen Records, does not deviate
from that trend.
Mule is fronted by the prolific Warren Haynes, also a regular guitarist for The
Allman Brothers Band, along with the man who toured with The Dead over the
summer in place of Jerry Garcia. Haynes’ thick, meaty guitar sound,
high-flying solos and slide work are well known to many, and his gritty voice
meshes perfectly with the blues rock of both the Brothers and Mule.
And Haynes shines brightly on this latest release, the first with new bassist
Jorgen Carlsson, who replaced Andy Hess earlier this year. The bass player
position has been an elusive one to maintain for Mule since it was first vacated
by the death of Allen Woody in 2000 of a drug overdose, five years after the
group’s first album. The following three years saw Mule release two
full-length albums with guest bassists and embark on a tour which involved the
bassists from The Allman Brothers, The Meters, Widespread Panic and The Black
Crowes before Hess joined full time in 2003.
The album leads with an ominous bass line and a guitar duel between Haynes and
ZZ Top guitarist and singer Billy Gibbons, which gives way to perceptive Haynes
lyrics and typically heavy, in-your-face distorted riff rock. This melding of
heavy guitar with a funk feel mixed with Haynes’ full vocals is the Mule
sound, and one that is found throughout their catalog, from “Bad Little
Doggie” off 2000’s Life Before Insanity (Capricorn) to the title track of
their 2006 release, High and Mighty (ATO).
“Railroad Boy” is a classic Haynes story: eerily depressing and sad, yet at
the same time both heartfelt and with a message that he delivers through his
well-traveled voice, singing “tell the world I died for love.” The lyrical
sob story is set against the backdrop of an electrified Delta blues song with a
marching beat from drummer Matt Abts that spurs the song along. The song feeds
into “Monday Mourning Meltdown,” which, along with album ender “World Wake
Up,” contains a serious look at some social and political issues, asking
“what about all the blood on the battleground?” against a spacey and
effects-laden backdrop.
Despite the occasionally depressing nature of his lyrics, Haynes is a phenomenal
writer about the human experience, a fact that comes through strongly in both
“Gordon James” and “Frozen Fear.” The former is another semi-sad story
about a lonely character in the vein of “Wine and Blood” from 2004’s Deja
Voodoo (ATO), while the latter is another take on Haynes view of how life should
be, invoking his song he originally recorded with the Allmans, “Soulshine,”
with the effervescently optimistic “don’t be afraid to live your life, my
dear / All the rest is just frozen fear.”
Recently Mule has taken their collective foot off the distortion pedal and
dabbled in dub and reggae influences, most notable on 2007’s release Mighty
High (ATO). The album features such reggae guests as Michael Franti, Willi
Williams and Toots Hibbert, and the dub influences can be seen in aspects of
“Frozen Fear.” Mule has in the past reworked old songs to be played in a
reggae style, though this album marks a return to the dirty blues-rock they made
their mark playing.
By A Thread peaks during “Inside Outside Woman Blues #3,” an incredibly
simplistic and powerful song, reminiscent of Mule’s first album, which they
delivered as a trio before adding keyboardist Danny Louis in 2002. Louis’
influence is heard in the high organ that is used to fill out the background to
Haynes’ snarling wah guitar and halting funk/blues riff. The song builds to a
peak before stopping completely, then transitioning into a filthy Haynes solo
through a Led-Zeppelin’s-“Since I’ve Been Loving You”-esque guitar lead.
The album is solid and well structured, with the heavy riff-rock neatly
balancing out slower tracks, but as strong as some of the songs are (“Broke
Down” and “Inside Outside”) it just feels like more of the same from Mule.
However, since the band thankfully decided on abandoning their reggae
flirtation, a return to form seems like a great thing from one of the most
talented and meanest rock bands around.
I know Warren doesn't read this or even goes on the net but wouldn't it be sweet
for this woman to get a song she spoke about on Facebook. And like I say, the
Mule hasn't done that song in a long long time so maybe someone will ask him to
play something by Tracy in Milan. She is such a good songwriter. For a female
that is. :-) The guys are traveling so much on this tour. Safe travels guys.
Of course any other Tracy song would do. She also loves the song Forevermore.
Which is one beautiful song.
