see you there!
Hey everyone!!
I don't want to miss out on the fun on the 4th, but I don't drive and
there is no bus that goes up to the Gold Hill Inn from Boulder.
Besides, I'd rather roll on up with some new (or old) Bluegrass buds
to celebrate the 4th with!
I live right in downtown Boulder, and would be more than happy to
split gas. If you don't already know me, check me out at

No matter what has went down this past week, I keep focusing on
Festivaaaaaaaaall!!!!!!!!!
The summer has only begun...
Thanks muchly!

Caught GSBG last night here in Kansas City. Man, what a treat. The
bar was filled with about 40 folks that appeared to just be
neighborhood regulars aside from my wife and I and another couple
from Lawrence, KS.
I was skeptical at first but boy am I glad I went. These guys are
great pickers and tell funny stories to boot. And the song to
finish off the encore was Pink Floyd's Time. I wasn't expecting
that.
Got to talk with the guys afterwards and they are all real nice guys.
Check 'em out if you can.

Hey all you Front Rangers...just wanted to remind you that if you have no Independance Day plans yet, the Wayword Sons will be playing at the awesome Gold Hill Inn.
Go up for some great picking and some killer food. It's only scheduled till 5pm so you'll even have time to checkout out some fireworks later that
night whereever you want. Although i'll bet the music will go late.

That "Love Reigns Down vs. Stormy Girl" is probably my fault because I think the
guys debuted that song up here in Great Falls on January 7, and the audience
member
who called out a name afterwards called it LRD. But if Burle wants to call it
"Stormy Girl," then "Stormy Girl" it is. Otherwise we'd have to work some
revisionist magic on songs like "And Going Away." Gimme half a chance and I
could
rename half a dozen Burle tunes but that wouldn't make it so! [chuckle...]

Big Smith is one of my alltime favorite bands. Used to see them a lot
in Fayetteville, AR back in the day. Its about time they made it up to
Colorado!
Mark Bilyeu is one helluva songwriter, as is Burle. Nice pairing.
WORLDS COLLIDE!
Besides the obvious studio recordings with Robin out there: Broke
Mountain and Wayword Sons, there are some great and recent live
recordings of Robin from this last Durango Bluegrass Meltdown
Festival, a Town Mountain show, and some Rock and Rye shows that I
have access to. Highlights include a Rock and Rye show opening up
for the Stringdusters where Chris Eldridge joins us for "I am a
Pilgrim", Robin pickin' "Freeborn Man" with Town Mountain, and the
Superjam at the Meltdown with Robin playing guitar along with
mandolin greats John Reischman and Lou Reid (of The Seldom Scene).
I'll see what I can do.

No it wouldn't!
Get off your lazy butt, David, and get that live compilation put together!
Think of it this way: it could fund the band's upcoming HIATUS (excuse me, it's
not
'disbanding' or breaking up' -- didn't you learn ANYTHING from Ph-sh?!), put
Durango
on the map (okay, so it's already there but do folks know???), and force
everyone to
come to terms with having missed out on one of the great moments of early 21st
century music (even if it sounds like mid-20th century music). You've got to
THINK
BIG!!! Also, keep in mind that it's not "bragging" if it's true.
One last story and then I'll go back to my hole. One day last week I was
sitting at
a stop light on the one-way to cross 10th Avenue South here in Great Falls,
Montana,
and I looked over to see a gal sitting in the car next to me bobbing her head in
time to the music. I looked back at her vehicle and spotted a Fort Lewis
Community
College sticker in the window, so I motioned for her to roll down and when she
did I
said, "I'm a member of KDUR-FM!" She got this surprised look on her face and
said,
"ME TOO!!!" But then the light turned green and we went our separate ways.
Still,
it's a small world when you're a friend of KDUR in Great Falls, Montana.
Okay, on with the usual nonsense of daily life.
Much Love to all,
+ Pastor Tim
p.s. I've got one of my Stone Soup Productions concerts tonight with Martha
Scanlan
and The Stuart Brothers, and I just decided that all KDUR members get in free!
Come
on, you KNOW you want to come to Montana tonight!

Dave,
How about putting together a Robin Davis live compilation? I assume
you have the most access to any live recordings he's on.
This is just wishful thinking. I realize this would take a LOT of
time to put together.

Hey Folks, David Smith here with Rock and Rye. It has been the
musical highlight of my short musical life playing with Robin. He's
the best guitar player I've ever heard. If he was alive and picking
back in the hey days when Clarence White, Tony Rice, Doc and Norman
were all "creating" the modern sound of flat-pick bluegrass guitar,
Robin would have been in that group and his name would be well known
today. I truly believe that Robin's name will be known someday in
the bluegrass world as one of the best flat pickers out there, along
with the other young great pickers: Jon Stickley and Chris Eldridge
come to mind. Other than being a flat-picking' madman, the other
thing Robin has in common with these players is that he's incredibly
humble. He would never go bragging about how hot he can pick the
guitar and all that, so I'm doing it for him right here. I would
love to see Robin one day be able to play in front of Rice or Bryan
Sutton so that a real pro out there can see what this guy born and
raised in Pagosa Springs, Colorado can do.
So enough rambling about his talents, you all already know.
What Robin is up to now-a-days, as far as I know, is that he's
moving to Michigan in July to attend an intensive and well respected
lutherie school (the building and fixing of acoustic instruments).
It's a six month school and after that he's talked about either
moving back to the Durango area to work with a local luthier named
Bruce Allsopp, or moving to the Front Range to pick music with the
extremely talented acoustic musicians that live around there, namely
Todd Livingston. On the other hand, it's Robin, he could very well
move back to Durango and continue happily working at the local
thrift store and pickin' with a hack bluegrass band called Rock and
Rye.
As for Rock and Rye, we're pretty much breaking up after a
couple of more gigs (at least disbanding for a little while). Our
mandolin player Chris Becker moved to Oklahoma and Robin is off to
Michigan. The Rock and Rye Myspace actually doesn't have any music
on it with Robin playing with us, which he has for the last several
months. I'll be getting some up on there soon and let folks know.
In closing - Robin's the man. He's a very cool guy and one of
the best guitar players I've ever heard - and I've listened to a lot
of bluegrass guitar.
Have a good day, David

anyway, good to hear that Robin is still wth Rock and Rye. My good
friend Chris Becker used to play mandolin in that group (he's now
with The Skillbillies out of Tahlequah, OK) and I guess I already
knew Dave was still in there.....cool.
Does Rock and Rye ever play outside of Durango?
(sorry, Im at work and they dont allow myspace here!)

Wow, that's embarrassing...
I just went to add Rock & Rye as a MySpace friend and found they already WERE my
friends. [blush...] Man, you know you've got too many friends when you start
trying to invite them to be your friend all over again, which always seems to be
the
biggest problem with the impersonal nature of MySpace.

Fully agreed on Robin's talents. Dude could sing and pick the guitar. And it's a cryin' shame that he doesn't like to play the mando, as he is sick on that instrument as well.

Is he in a band? Last I heard he had a regular gig at the Strater Hotel bar (cant remember the name of that place!!??) but that was a while back.
He was SO GOOD in Broke Mtn--and the Sons for that matter. His songs were some of my very favorites... not to mention he's got an awesome voice and is an incredible picker----a triple threat if you will.
Just wondering where I can catch him playing in front of people.
he's playing in a durango band called rock and rye.

our own listmate david smith is also in the band. just wish they'd
come on up to the front range. how about it david! ;)
