This past weekend, I performed at the first Kentucky Cowboy Poetry
and Music Festival at the Historic State Theater in Elizabethtown,
KY. My act was a hit as the organizers claimed they were glad they
hired me on because there wasn't much to keep the interest of the
young-uns present. I told them that's where it counts 'cause as long
as the young-uns seem to have a good time, the parents will
definitely come back next time.
During the day, I performed outside twice by a Chuckwagon setup. I
performed Cowboy & Kid's tunes on the guitar, talked a little about
the Silver Screen Cowboys, and broke out the Magic tricks. WoW!
Those little ones loved it. They were all dressed in their Cowboy
attire, it was so cute.
Then Tom Cunningham, my fiddle player drove down to accompany me in
the evening show and we blew the house down playing old tunes by Roy
Rogers, Gene Autry and such. I was the headlining musical performer
(the rest were poets) and they even had a beautiful poster with my
picture on it posted all over the town.
Our song list included; Back On Those Texas Plains, Back In The
Saddle Again, Sioux City Sue, Don't Fence Me In, Goldmine In The
Sky, Hang Up My Spurs & Saddle, RedWing (Fiddle tune), Silver Dew On
The Bluegrass Tonight and an original by yours truly. Then, we were
called up at the end of the show to perform Amazing Grace and ended
with Happy Trails.
Other performers included; Mike & Maggie Beville (show organizers),
Poets Charlie Halloway, Joel Hayes, Frank Wood, and Jerry Warren.
And I didn't get their names but there were two fellas from Dayton,
Ohio that performed Cowboy Music for their first time. Pretty good
and it's great to see newcomers with interest in our Western heritage.
We were invited to come down and perform for the Georgia Cowboy
Poetry Gathering in the Spring.
This festival is going to be an annual event and plans are already in
the making for it to be bigger and better next year.
Keep A Shine On Y'er Spurs!
