I was reading your first message, and I thought that what you do is
really great for the kids. They need better stuff than what the TV
and Internet seem to provide any more. I most definitely approve of
what you are doing, and BTW, a great big Howdy!!! to everyone from
me.

Man, it looks like I used my old "Boxing Gloves Tping Method" for my
typing here. Sorry about that. I guess my proofreading skills need
to improve. We are all learning, anyway.
Hey Sam,
I did these songs on my show: "Mamas, Don't Let Your
Babies," "Heartaches By The Number," "Green Green Grass Of Home,"
and "Blue Eyes Cryin' In The Rain." This was a Volunteer lunvcheon
at a Senior Center nearby. They were all older people there, and
they enjoyed it immensely. So did I.
This past weekend, I performed at the first Kentucky Cowboy Poetry
and Music Festival at the Historic State Theater in Elizabethtown,
KY. My act was a hit as the organizers claimed they were glad they
hired me on because there wasn't much to keep the interest of the
young-uns present. I told them that's where it counts 'cause as long
as the young-uns seem to have a good time, the parents will
definitely come back next time.
During the day, I performed outside twice by a Chuckwagon setup. I
performed Cowboy & Kid's tunes on the guitar, talked a little about
the Silver Screen Cowboys, and broke out the Magic tricks. WoW!
Those little ones loved it. They were all dressed in their Cowboy
attire, it was so cute.
Then Tom Cunningham, my fiddle player drove down to accompany me in
the evening show and we blew the house down playing old tunes by Roy
Rogers, Gene Autry and such. I was the headlining musical performer
(the rest were poets) and they even had a beautiful poster with my
picture on it posted all over the town.
Our song list included; Back On Those Texas Plains, Back In The
Saddle Again, Sioux City Sue, Don't Fence Me In, Goldmine In The
Sky, Hang Up My Spurs & Saddle, RedWing (Fiddle tune), Silver Dew On
The Bluegrass Tonight and an original by yours truly. Then, we were
called up at the end of the show to perform Amazing Grace and ended
with Happy Trails.
Other performers included; Mike & Maggie Beville (show organizers),
Poets Charlie Halloway, Joel Hayes, Frank Wood, and Jerry Warren.
And I didn't get their names but there were two fellas from Dayton,
Ohio that performed Cowboy Music for their first time. Pretty good
and it's great to see newcomers with interest in our Western heritage.
We were invited to come down and perform for the Georgia Cowboy
Poetry Gathering in the Spring.
This festival is going to be an annual event and plans are already in
the making for it to be bigger and better next year.

That sounded great about you giving away that bandanna...lol. Yep, I.m gonna throw out a few old country tunes and a cowboy tune or two. I have some songs that are 40-50 years old, of country music, and i"m gonna throw in "Cowboy's Dream" in the key of G; and maybe "Miles And Miles Of Texas" in A. Gotta do "Blue Eyes Cryin' In The Rain, and I'm re-learning Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues," sort of a quick tribute to Johnny Cash, you know. "Heartaches By The Number," and I might even throw in that standard song from Jimmy Buffett, "Margaritaville, or I'll soften it down with "Soth Of The Border," by Gene Autry, instead. I'm scheduled for about 20 minutes because they have alot of other things to do in their 2 hour period. I think it will be fun. Thanks for asking.

Jerry,
That's Great to hear,,,Good Luck with it. I performed last Thursday at the local elementary school for 53 second graders. I told the kid's I had a Cowboy bandanna to give away to the one who could tell me who the King of the Cowboys was.
One child jumped up and yelled, "YOU!". Well, how could I let it go, I gave him the bandanna.

Howdy All,
Whoa! Has it been busy 'round the bunkhouse this Summer. I apologize
for not being round much but see ya'll have been doing just fine.
I'd like to Welcome all new members and say Howdy to all the ol'
pards here. Speaking of members, I received a request e-mail to join
this group the other day and before I could finish reading it, that
same someone unsubscribed immediately. So, ya know what their
intentions were. I'm pleased to say that since making this
a "members only" group, we are now Spam-Free. All that varmint
wanted to do was get on here and solicit business.
Anyways, I just got back from Gatlinburg, TN from performing at the
Single Action Shooting Society's Family Reunion and Hall of Fame
induction ceremony. I performed my Singing Cowboy act twice on
Thursday and once on Friday. Folks seemed to have liked my
performance and several asked questions about those Silver Screen
Heroes of ours.
I'll be at the first annual Kentucky Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival
in October and if any ya'll have some time, C'mon down.
Then in November, I'm doing my act for the Girl Scouts in
Louisville. Now, I don't know how those li'l gals will like the
serious singing Cowboy act I do, so I'm in the middle of creating a
Comical Cowboy act for them. Shouldn't be too hard to do since I
performed as both a Clown & Magician for years. I'm calling it the
Wacky Wild West Show.
So, What's been going on in y'er neck of the woods??? Gimme some
ideas of what ya'll would like to see here 'round the ranch. Any
ideas???

I just moved to chicago from Austin got to love
the looks people give me with my Texas belt and
cowboy hat. I enter a meeting and attack. I love
the fact that people underestimate me kind of

Someone mentioned a poem called Bacon & Beans as their favorite. I could find no poem or author that you mentioned. Now, the poem & song called "The Old Chisolm Trail" with the lyrics "well, it's a bacon and beans most every day, but soon I'll be eatin' that prairie hay".... "come-a-ti-yi-yippee-yippee-yea yippie yea...come-a-ti-yi-yippee-yippee-yea"
Cowboypoetry.com has a page about all time favorite poems and I learned a lot there. There's an old poet Bruce Kiskaddon who seemed to be on everyone's lips and he does have some great poems. I definitely have a couple on my list for me to learn. "The Duel" is probably next on my list.
I noticed several favorites of people was "Little Joe, the Wrangler" and "Strawberry Roan". I've played those songs for years but never thot about recitin em as poetry. Now I've got a couple more in the bag.

Sonora's Death Row was written by Robert Earl Keen. He is an Austin, Texas
contemporary of Lyle Lovett. I highly reccomend his work.

www.cowboypoetry.com Lots of good poetry here. I enjoyed them. I don't know anything about "copyright" issues, so I don't know what to tell anyone about that. I will look for more web sites.

perform some of my own. I will be doing some stuff at the Writing The West

I have changed the settings of this Group so that it is "Members Only". I hated to do it but it IS the only way to prevent the spammers from gaining access to our little ranch here.
I have a few cowboy poetry web sites in my Favorites. If you would like, I will send you the web site addresses. Just let me know. Again, I really think that is great to do Cowboy Poetry.

Cowboy Bob,
Unfortunately, at the last minute, my trip to Ft Worth has fallen thru. Can't talk work into giving me the time off. Now that I know when the AWA Gathering is held every year, you can bet I'll put in vacation time for it ahead of time from here on out.
You should consider joining the Academy of Western Artists, either as a Poet or a Whip maker. Fine bunch of folks there. If y'er really considering getting into Cowboy Poetry, there is an informative chat on Thursday nights at Silver Creek Books & Music website. I've been busy with my Singing Cowboy act and will be performing down in Gatlinburg, TN alongside Pistol Packin' Paula (remember,,,we talked about
her before???) for the Single Action Shooting Society's Family Reunion in August. Then I'll be appearing at the first annual Kentucky Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival in E'Town, KY in October, and the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana's Festival of the Arts in Louisville, KY in November. My website has changed as well. Ya'll can check it out and hear ol' Southwest sing at; http://www.geocities.com/saddletrails
