Hello again!

I thought you might be interested in a small tale regarding an old Strawbs
recording I found recently.

We were doing a clearout in our house and I decided some of the stuff from the
loft/attic should be thrown out. While sifting through some of the stuff I found
some old albums and cassettes gathering dust in a corner. Some of the cassettes
were live recordings from bands I had seen in my teens but one of the recordings
was of 1 track by The Strawbs recorded from a cassette recorder from the BBC
program 'Swap Shop'. The track I had recorded was 'Hard Hard Winter' presumably
from 1976 when Deep Cuts was out. The thing is even though the recording hasn't
got a great sound it does have a great line which Dave Cousins ad libs at the
end. Instead of repeating the line 'Its going to be a hard hard winter long and
cold' he changes it to' I'm dreaming of a white Christmas long and cold' and
then does a little laugh.

For the benefit of our overseas friends and if my memory molecules serve me
correctly 'Swap Shop' was a children's/youth based TV program presented by Noel
Edmonds on a Saturday morning. Noel Edmunds at that time was a regular face on
just about every TV show, he was also known to be quite a big Strawbs fan and
probably played a fair part in getting them on the show.

I hope you found this a little interesting!

Michael

On the subject of Noel Edmunds and the Strawbs, I recall Noel having
Deep Cuts as the album of the week on his Radio 1 Show. I can't
remember whether it was a morning or afternoon show at the time, but
I do remember listening to it when driving to or from work. I also
have a vague recollection of Dave C and Dave L appearing live on the
show and being interviewed by Noel, but I may be mistaken there.
Anyone else have similiar memories ?

Gordon.

Hi Folks

Hearing all this talk about Deep Cuts as an old recording makes me
feel really ancient - I remember it as one of the newer albums - Sad
as well as ancient !!

But I do recall a BBC radio album review programme with Elton John
doing some of the reviews. They played "Turn Me Round" which was of
course classic uncompromising "crash the chords lads" Strawbs and you
just knew that EJ would pan it - which he did, but with some
platitudes about how the Strawbs spawned some good musicians. It was
great those few weeks back at Southampton and Burgess Hill to see the
band playing Turn Me Round live for the first time. I was delighted
in the post-gig crawling opportunity to say to DC about the song and
he commented that it needed two lead guitars and so never used to get
played.

Never quite forgave EJ though for his negative comments on the radio.
Strawbs fans have long memories it seems.

Does anyone on the list know if Sandy Denny sang "The Battle of Evermore"? I
thought that when Jimmy Page and Robert Plant did the song on their "No
Quarter" CD that they mentioned Sandy.

She sure did, at least on the original album; I vividly remember buying the
vinyl version many years ago for that very reason (why else??). There may be
later versions which don't feature Sandy, but I'm not aware of these.

The "Original Album" didn't have "The Battle of Evermore " on it. What album
is it from? I looked through alot of her discography and didn't see it
anywhere. Not even in the compilations. I have "Who Knows Where the Time
Goes" and "No More Sad Refrains" and its not on either set.

The version on the untitled Led Zep fourth album has Robert Plant and
Sandy trading verses on that track, a real highlight of the Album. I
think its also on the Led Zeppelin Remasters double CD.

True, Les. As a matter of fact, the first time I had ever heard of Sandy
Denny was that very track, on the very first album I ever bought with my own
money. It was also the spark for my reading 'The Lord of the Rings' by
J.R.R. Tolkien, a book I have read over a hundred times in my life, and has
been the biggest influence of all on me. Oddly enough, I have become a
Tolkien fan, and a Sandy Denny fan, but I have since come to loathe Led
Zepplin, because of their satanic garbage. Doug.

As far as I know it's not on a Sandy album but first appears on Led Zeppelin
4 and also on the Led Zeppelin Remasters along with Stairway to Heaven etc.

Very much thinking from the top of my head, it was written by Led Zep I
believe with Sandy in mind but I don't believe she got a songwriting credit.
However, I'll look at the album tonight and find out. I'm pretty sure she
was just a guest vocalist.

The album is called 'Led Zepplin IV', but was nicknamed 'Zoso' because of
one of the symbols on it.
I have never seen this track on any Sandy Denny album, but it may appear
on a collection we cannot get here in Canada. Doug.

The song was written by Jimmy Page. "Battle" has got to be one of Zep's
finest moments, Sandy really sounds like she was having a great time with it
as well. Ya know it's kinda funny, I was just talking to someone about
Sandy Denny and the person said, "Oh, you mean the lady that sang with Led
Zeppelin!" What a shame!

Lew

PS: If no one has answered yet, the Led Zeppelin album is Led Zeppelin IV,
or Zoso. Whichever you call it. It had so many names back in the 70's.

Doug,

I can understand your feeling about Led Zepplin if they dabbled in "satanic
garbage", presumably on their fourth album? Fortunately, I don't know that
album, but their first 3 albums are surely fundamental to a classic rock
collection.
