Welcome John !
The XL-1 has been out a while and the manufacturer no longer supports the
upgrade (which is a new motherboard). Your best bet for this is, when you are
ready, to find a XL-1 Turbo or Proteus 2000 (same features as turbo, different
ROM) on EBay sell yours...
As for the "Simms", these are ROMs available from sellers on EBay or users here
you want to sell. The traditional instrument one is called the "composer" or
"pop collection" ROM, see this site for some more info:

If you want a full keyboard with traditional instruments from the same family,
with 4 slots, 64 polyphony and aftertouch, look for a PK-6 (I have one of these
also)......
Here is an EBay search for all ROMs for the XL-1:

Subject: [XL-1] Hi Guys
Just got the XL1, I'm impressed with the sounds it has but in reading I've
heard of the Turbo upgrade and Simms that can be added to the unit. I can't
seem to find anyone selling these, maybe I'm not using the right terms to
search for them. The onboard sounds will really expand my range, but I'd
like to get a Simm with more traditional instruments on it. I probably
should have bought a different module, but I like this one, and if I can
upgrade it to make it even more useful I'll be extremely happy, and if I can
get the turbo upgrade and add more simms I'll be ecstatic. Anyone know why
E-Mu stopped making this sort of module?
