The manual for the XL-1 is still downloadable from the Emu website and that one
is not hard to read....

Ok I found an article that says the proteus can be reset holding down the
master and edit during power on, I'll try that. I have no manual, only a
PDF that is really hard to read.

I plugged my qs6.1 into the :XL1 set it to send on MIDI 1, 2, 3 selected
multi in the main window and tried to play, I got a cacophony of sound,
   and
now the XL1 has not installed in the display. Turning the selector goes
back to the regular voices but anytime I try to play it it goes back to
   not
installed. I can only assume that QS is trying to send a bank change to
   the
empty slot or something has happend to the installed XL1 ROM. My version
states it is version 1, I notice there is an XL1 module for sale on E-Bay
that says its version 2 and has 5 banks. Is there a way I can reset this
thing and start over? I will be really upset if I've destroyed my XL1.

Don't think you can cause any permanent damage...try the factory reset first,
here is the instructions from our own message archive:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/XL-1/message/2316

Then upgrade the OS when you get a chance....you are back in the stone ages for
that synth with version 1

Hi John

The Vintage Synth ROM is a great way to get those familiar synth sounds of the
past. However, this accounts for that ROM being relatively rare and of higher
price on the resale market....$200 to $300 for it these days....

Thanks to all for the replies that search worked well. If I can find it

with the right sounds already on them. I have to many keyboards now to add

   Welcome John !

The XL-1 has been out a while and the manufacturer no longer supports the
upgrade (which is a new motherboard). Your best bet for this is, when you
are ready, to find a XL-1 Turbo or Proteus 2000 (same features as turbo,
different ROM) on EBay sell yours...

As for the "Simms", these are ROMs available from sellers on EBay or users
here you want to sell. The traditional instrument one is called the
"composer" or "pop collection" ROM, see this site for some more info:

   de-EMU_W0QQugidZ10000000002148488>>

If you want a full keyboard with traditional instruments from the same
family, with 4 slots, 64 polyphony and aftertouch, look for a PK-6 (I have
   one of these also)......

Here is an EBay search for all ROMs for the XL-1:

should have bought a different module, but I like this one, and if I can
upgrade it to make it even more useful I'll be extremely happy, and if I
   can

E-Mu stopped making this sort of module?

(Apologies to people who have read this note on another P2K-related
group, but not everyone reads them all. Please ignore it, if you have
already seen it).

I have uploaded a new version of Proteum to my web site. Version 1.26
of Proteum contains some fixes to the MIDI communication code that
may have been giving people some problems. There are also a number of
minor bug fixes and better support for multi-user setups.

There are also a number of enhancements. I have added a Randomise
Preset option (the second most requested feature from users), but the
main area of change is in the File Load/Save and new Import/Export
functions.

Proteum can now directly read Proteus SysEx Preset Dumps removing the
need for the XML Preset files (though they are still supported). I
have also added an Export/Import facility that allow you to export a
preset or part of preset as a SysEx dump and the ability to reimport
them later to the edit buffer. So, for example, if you find a good
combination of FX parameters, you can save them separately and apply
them to other patches.

There are also many improvements to saving the Edit Buffer so it
should be much faster and less susceptible to differences in the
various products supported.

By the way, the most requested enhancement I have received is support
for Mac OSX. However, I have no experience of developing for the Mac
and no Mac for testing the software, so I cannot really help. If
there is a Mac developer out there who has the tools, equipment, the
time and the inclination to do a free port to the Mac, contact me
here or at the web site and I'll discuss.

The installation zip file is also improved with a fuller history and
a ReadMe with installation instructions.

To get the new version, navigate to:

	 http://www.emigr8.me.uk

Scroll to bottom, select the Proteum link and you should find the
software.

Unfortunately, given there are now around 1500 users, the web server
is likely to become very busy over the next few days, so please be
patient.

it now looks like Emu won't release the XL-1 soundset for
these software items but as you can put cards in for other
things that are in software
can anybody tell me if you can send a preset made on hardware
to the software equiuvalent and get it to work
presumably not?
also is it possible to get cards still to put in a Proteus

could be put in an X-L1

Hi Steve/Kristian,
I did add arps and beats editing to Proteum in the end. It's in the
current version. Can't remember what version I added it.

To edit an ARP, select the "Arp Edit" button on the main screen.

To edit a beat, select the "Master Settings" from the main window.
The Master Settings appear and there is a button labelled "Master
Arps and Beats". Click that and you get a "Master Arps and Beats
Settings" dialog. On that dialog there is a button marked "Beat
Editor". The rest should be obvious. Sorry, its a bit hidden away.

NOTE: You should be aware that more recent versions of Proteum don't
support Win95 any more.

As you say, you can't edit riffs.

Hello all,

New on the list, and new with the XL-1, great piece of equipment
probably, just have to figure out how it works ;)

I would like to have a good editor/librarian so I can edit mainly
the riffs and arpeggios.

I found a site with a program called "PatchPro" however the download
link is broken... Does anyone have the DEMO-version of this software
and can send it to me? It would be great.

I also found the Proteum that emigr8 put on his site, I have
downloaded and shall check it out. However it doesn't seem to have
riff and arpeggio editing features?

Hope someone of you finds the PatchPro in your "archives" :)

Cheers!

Hi, sorry for late reply, hopefully you have already found out how
to do this, but if NOT here is how:

The display for all sounds look something like below:
-----------------------------
C01 V102 P00 A:P USER
063 Patchname
-----------------------------
To change the volume of just the patch that your are working on
right now just use the left and/or right buttons ( < ) ( > ) to
scroll the cursor to the V-field in the display (V=Volume) (P=Pan,
A=Arpeggio, C=channel) Turn the value up or down with the dial. And
there you should have it. Good luck!

The Emu web site still supports the download of OS & manuals for this legacy
hardware gear....just go to the http://www.emu.com/support/legacy.asp to get the
right version....

I'm not shure, but maybe you are using a midi keyboard or software
sequenser that has assigned the 'mute' keys to other functions than
notes. Like 'stop', 'play' etc. Once a key has other assignments, you
can't hear the note.

Some midi keyboards have templates for sequensers with these other
functions.

Succes from the Netherlands,

Jos

Hello XL users,

Looking for some samples of preset Sub duH bass C1-C2-C3.
I used to own one XL turbo but sold it. I do regret now and I want it
back. Still looking for a deal.

But right now I'm working on an old song and I need the Sub duH bass
for that.

Please can someone sample Sub duH bass C1-C2-C3 (16 bit, 44.1 khz) and
send me the samples?

Kind regards,

Jos

Hy

Sorry for my english but i'm from Belgium. ;-)

Here is the problem. Extreme lead XL1

I play on xl1 with another synth sending midi tp the rack.

When i play the lowest C key, i heard the sound. When i play the next note (D) i
heard
nothing until i reach the E one octave upper, and nothing from there to the C
again octave
upper. After that all notes are responding well.

I made a reset and all auto test inside the machine and all tests are passed.

who has an idea...?

Tks

Another factor is that some users paid the manufactures to record
tapes of their own sounds - so the BBC had spot sound effects, other
players had MiniMoog sounds or electric guitars, oboe, trumpet etc.
They would all suffer / benefit from the instabilities - and you'd
be able to hear it was a mellotron playing - but they still wouldn't
be the 'standard' tones that we've all become used to from countless
records.

No, sometimes the instabilty was not 'consistant'. On earlier
models, the motor would lose the will if you played loads of notes
at once... so the bigger the chord, the flatter the pitch. Not sure
how you would emulate this on the P2K / X-Lead... but maybe some
instabilities are less desirable than others. And yes, the tapes
would stretch over time... or under hot stage lighting.

All you want, really, is enough variation to make it
sound 'organic' - and, to reiterate, it's a random variation, not a
cyclic one - it's not vibrato. And as for initial pitch variation -
you just want to hear a very slightly different note every time you
play the same key. You might also want to do exactly the same for
the filter, so as to have instabilities of tone too.

Listen to the phased lead mellotron on Tangerine Dream's 'Phaedra' -
starting 3:37 in - to hear what i mean. [it almost sounds to me like
it's playing in Just Intonation!]

-----

The filter isn't to be used as a filter in this example (ie opening
in some kind of wowwwing fashion), just as a tone control to dull
the sound - so no envelope needed. A Smooth filter with frequency
at, say, 160 is enough to dull the waveforms - though the BlisBatz
is quite good at making the sort of tape-head harshness that a
Mellotron can sometimes have (to my ear). Also there is no release
on a Mellotron - the sound stops dead when you take a finger off the
key (and after eight seconds anyway if you hold the key down - coz
you run out of tape!). You might also want to put a small delay in
to the program to trick the fingers into thinking they are playing a
stiff mechanical keyboard.

With nothing less sad to do with my Christmas, and four of the P2K
ROMs in front of me, I've been playing with to see what compares
side by side with the Vintage ROM. I can get very close with the
Composer ROM... not least because it contains the same Tron Strings
as the Vintage ROM, and the 'real' flute, brass and voices function
very well instead of the Tron versions.

However, with the X Rom, there isn't a direct 'real' equivalent,
so...

0092 vox: Wave 2 seems closest for voices,
0051 syn: Synth 12 or 0496 pad: Mood Strings for strings.
0004 wav: Triangle is perhaps closest to a flute; add some white
noise in for that one, as the Mellotron Flute is quite breathy and
has a 'chiff' on it [in other words, do what you'd do to make a
realistic flute on a synth, then make it duller and more out of
tune!]

I should also add that it's not really necessary to use the Lag for
the random LFO - if you're using just enough of the stepped waveform
to be noticeable, the ear will think it's constantly varying anyway.
Also, if the LFO is free-running you might get away without applying
Key Random to Pitch... all depends on how much you want to mess
around with the menus.

-----

Incidentally, the old Vintage Keys and Classic Keys appear to have
different Mellotron samples to the P2K based ROMs - the VK and CK,
to my ear, have the single-manual M400 tapes and the Vintage Rom is
much more like the older Mk II. [In Edgar Froese terms... the VK
would be 'Epsilon in Malaysian Pale', and the Vintage Pro would
be 'Atem'] The older modules also allow you to do the 'stopping'
effect. You might want to eBay one of these old things - i love mine.

oh the mellotron !

makes me cry every time i hear one, even after all those years !

http://www.mellotron.com/

http://www.mellotron.com/mellolis.htm

Genesis :
opening of watcher of the skies (foxtrot) a master mix of brass/strings
silent sorrow in empty boats (the lamb lies down on Broadway) choir
Broadway melody (the lamb lies down on Broadway) cello/string
end of Entangled (trick of the tail) choir

prog band Anketoden and Porcupine Tree use them a lot

A Mellotron polluted lovely gem is also
Edgar Froese's Epsilon in Malaysian Pale
make sure u hear the old original one not the new horrible re-mixed one !
Tangerine Dream till the end of 70s used them a lot too
early Klaus Schulze too
all King Crimson album till Red are also polluted

most popular tapes for the mellotron were flutes strings and choir
but many different weird and exotic ones were made
I have tried many Cds and samples in the end it seems that G-media Mtron
has all the ever made tapes

http://www.gmediamusic.com/gforce/m-tron/M-Tron.html

this is also quite good

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110062777487

Both are IMHO THE reference sample set for all mellotron fan
and both are based on the super set of Mr. Klaus Hoffmann-Hoock.
i didn't like at all the so-praised Mike Pinder collection !

Realistic Mellotron on an xl1 mmmm ? ... quite a challenge i would say.

Waves to start with

88 89 90 for choir

496 522 for strings

107 471 for flute

the pitch was fluctuating all over the 8 sec
since the tape was rolling and read by a magnetic head
i would try a random slow/fast LFO with MWheel on pitch

Filter wasn't really part of the Mello sound
best would be a parametric or graphic EQ to cut off the over 10 khz harmonics
Maybe the VOW family will give a kind of vocoder effect on the choir ones

A very slow random panning LFO too in the VCA stage.
the Mello was mono but this will increase the new taste i guess.

Let us know or hear some examples if u ever dig in.

Regards

I immediately thought: Moody Blues, Yes, Zeppelin and Orchestral
Manoeuvres in the Dark. There's a good list at:

Thanks for breaking down the Mellowtron features!! I may want to try
myself. I am trying to recall examples of Mellotron. I think the
following are examples (can anyone confirm?):

--Heavy opening chords from "In the Court of the Crimson King" (Or

Any others examples?

Question was the ever-so-slight pitch/filter oscillation consistent
or did it have variation possibly from from the wearing/stretching of
the tape?

Also, I am wondering which of the filter types and specific settings
would give the best results?
