Hi the board, Iīm a new XL-1 owner from montevideo/uruguay

I was playing synths and samplers for about 20 years avoiding ROMplers but
recently I got the XL-1 for very cheap and I was blowed away!!!

I want to know some things that I canīt found in manual or the internet

1. my XL-1 has OS 1.23, what is the last version?...what the differences between
mine and the last one?

2. whatīs supose the "Sloop" arameters does?...I founf it in the patchcords
modulation destinations and I can heard it action for sure but I cant figure out
what itīs suposed to do...for me itīs sound like changing the loopīs crossfade
angle so you get a gritty sound by repeating the loop with less accuracy

3. the manual said that you have both auxiliar and filter EG retrigger as a
modulation destination but I donīt found the filter EG retriggr option

thanks for your time and I hope I could help someone in the future

Is there a actually ROM in 1 of the 2 slots (open the unit) ? If so, start off
with removing the ROM, cleaning the contacts with an eraser and reinstalling to
be sure it is seated correctly....

Hey, I never wrote in the group and maybe this will make no much sense but I
just wanted to know if this happened to anyone else.

I dont like the patches at all, the sound is good but after one or two hours of
no excesive volume my ears start to hurt.

About the patches, I only find the sounds pleasant if I take only one or 2
layers with my own programming. The combinations of sounds in the patches
disgust me, definitely.

All this make me let the synth turned off most time. I like the unit and I think
it haves a big quality and great sound capability but I feel it's really hard to
work with... there are so much sounds and i end spending hours casting all the
patches or waveforms in the unit for hours...

sorry my broken english and whinning..

please let me know your thoughts !

greetings. Ignacio.

Hi Guys,
I just purchased an xl1 on ebay for Ģ25 described as faulty.
Basically it says not
installed for all presets when i turn it on. I have tried to diagnose the both
slots and the
module is telling me both are empty. Is this most likely a faulty rom? Any help
at all would be
great.

Hello lutsenkoiger !

I answered your question in the orbit3 Yahoo group about a week ago....I will
give the same answer to you in the XL-1 group......"No. You can buy V2 and sell
V1 if you want. The samples (the waveforms) are the same on both ROMs. Only
some of the presets )patches) differ and there is an extra bank of them. You
can load V2 presets into the V2 ROM. See this link for more info:

I used Proteum and was able to copy the patches over one at a time. Does it
not copy automatically because the QRAM ROM has 5 Banks 0-4 and the USER
banks only go 0-3?

That is indeed the case, I just bought an empty one from a good friend and
even though it still lists sounds in the USER area they do not play. Now
for the new problem and yet another stupid question. I got a ROM that may
or may not have come from a Ensonique ZR 76. I'm not sure I put it in my
empty P2K and it identifies itself as QROM it does indeed contain a patch
called the perfect piano and I'm extremely happy with the sounds on it, so
that's not the issue. What is an issue is that the USER banks all read
EMPTY should not have copies of the sounds on the ROM been copied to the
USER area as the ROM cards on my other P2K and XL1 do? I added the XROM to
my XL-1 and it's sounds showed up in the USER area on the XL-1 and it
seems
the ROMs I've added to my other P2K (Protozoa, Beat Garden, Techno Synth
Construction Yard, plus the composer that was already there) are all
copied
to the USER area.. I did a reset on the thing, but it doesn't copy the
sounds over to the USER area. I tried doing a write of a sound from QROM
000 bank 0 to USER 000 bank 0 it said it did it but there was no sound in
the USER 0000 0 location when done. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I did upgrade the OS to 2.26 already.

I can't believe E-Mu stopped making these things, yes I know everyone is
going to VSTs but there's something to be said for not tying up hardware
and
memory in the computer to produce the sounds that these units do so very
   well.

I am nearly ready to make the next version of Proteum available. It
has a whole raft of new stuff including:

   - Setup/Multimode Editor,
   - Sonar Keymap Generation,
   - Layer Muting
   - User Editable Tooltips,
   - Keyboard Latch, Chord and Repeat
   - Beat Pads
   - Tuning Editor,
   - Complete Module Backup and Restore,

and a load of bug fixes. In fact, it pretty much does everything you
can do in the front panel.

But, I need some (a few) people to help me with Beta testing the
code. It would probably take an hour or so of your time. I will
provide detailed instructions on what needs to be done, but
essentially you will need to perform a list of tests and send me a
mail telling me how you got on with each test and enclosing a bunch
of files that I will be able to take a look at.

Its probably preferable if the people doing the testing already use
older versions of the software so we can avoid spending lots of time
on MIDI connection issues and focus on making sure the software
works. However, if that is not possible, then so be it. Also, please
don't sign up for this if you suspect that your module has some kind
   of existing problem.

Also, I'd like the test to be performed over a variety of different
module types including keyboards, command stations, a P2500, P2K and
P1K variants and with a variety of MIDI interfaces, where appropriate.

So, if you are interested in helping me out with this, please drop me
a line using mail telling me:

   - which module or modules you have,
   - what ROMs you have installed in the modules,
   - the MIDI interface you are using

and I will get back to you in the next week or two.

I can't really manage too many people so, if I have an overwhelming
response, which is unlikely, then I will pick people on the basis of
achieving the widest possible variety of platforms. So if you sign
up, but don't finish up doing it, then don't feel insulted or
   anything.

On an added note I finally won a Proteus 2000 it claims to have the Composer
Rom installed so I'm pretty sure I now have the 4 slots available (3 in
Proteus 1 in XL1). I find it interesting that the ROMs are going for more
than buying a Proteus 2000.

Ok, I keep seeing Proteus 2000s on E-Bay that state composer ROM has been
removed but unit retains stock patches (not sure that's possible). I know
that XL1 is supposed to have 2 ROM Slots is one of the slots taken up by
an
XL1 ROM or are the built in sounds on chips on the motherboard? I have the
list of all ROMs available and sooner or later will win a Proteus 2000 on
E-bay the question becomes if one of those slots in the proteus is taken
up
with the Composer Rom and I have at least one more slot in the XL1 what 4
ROMS would you recommend for Electronica, Space, Trance or what we used to
call New Age music which I think has been subdivided into the previously
mentioned categories. I realize this is highly subjective but the ROMs
aren't cheap and I can't afford to make a mistake. I'd love to buy all the
ROMs but it's just not an option.

Wow this sounds great, I think you just made up my mind in favor of SONAR so
I can take advantage of this.. Just so a noob like me can be clear your
talking about the actual XL-1 Module not a software synth. Just received my
E-Mu ESI32 and love it, I have a Proteus 2 in transit. I'm sold on E-Mu. I
can't believe they don't make instruments anymore, with equipment like this
I would have thought they would be at the top of the heap.

It sounds like you did a very thorough walk through of the process
and I agree, it would be a monster to try to build the algorithm to
parse a patch to reconstruct the INS script for drum key maps.

OK I have had a little think about this. What would be useful is to
have the keymaps for the patches in the INS file (along with the
Beats trigger keys, etc.) However, there are a couple of problems.

Firstly, standard keymap files are not published for all the Emu
ROMs. I have the keymap files for about 9 of them (Phatt, TSCY, ZR,
AOrch, Cmpsr, Protozoa, World, XLead, Orch2) but many are missing.
Its possible that some of the missing ones might not have any
keymaps, but others, such as the Beat ROM, certainly do and yet there
is no keymap file. I have looked both on Emu's site and on Rob
Papen's site.

The second problem is that Emu specify keymaps on a per instrument
basis not on a per patch basis, which is how Sonar understands it. So
what I would have to do is:

a) work through each patch in turn
b) download each layer
c) Check each instrument to see if it has a key map.
d) Check the layer transpose to see if the keymap is offset
e) Check the split data to see what part of the new keymap are
relevant
e) Merge the new keymap with what I already have for the other layers
(since you could have two key maps in one preset)
f) Merge in the beat trigger information
g) dump it in the .NoteNames section in the INS file and append a Key
[] reference at the end.

I think I now know why none of the standard Emu .INS files have
keymaps in them. :-(

Hi, Keith. Thanks for the promnpt reply. I was thinking of the
beats triggers/key assignments (not the riff itself). I didn't flesh
out the details, but what immediately came to mind was the way
Cakewalk puts all the drums of the current preset/kit on the notes.
Offhand, I don't recall the cakewalk syntax, but I will try to dig
it out. I know key maps are implemented in the Proteus 1/2/3 and
other early e-mu *.ins files cakewalk distributed.

Beats triggers are on pp 51-52 of e-mu sysex manual v2.2. There are
24 triggers (accessed via the layer select command) with two
parameters each: BEATS_TRIGGER_KEY and BEAT_TRIGGER_LATCH.

I was thinking a simple implementation would be to read the key for
each of the 24 triggers. It could get more complex; for example, you
could have trigger buttons on Proteum.

I will look up the cakewalk format for key map assignments.

Maybe, but I am not sure how you would express a Beat RIFF in an .ins
file. Obviously, I already put in all the patches in including the ones
categorised as "bts:". But the RIFFs themselves? I am not sure which
section they would go in. Am I missing something?

BTW, I was just playing around with Keith Young's Proteum software. It
will create an *.ins file based on all the user and ROM presets you
have in your box.

If he has time, maybe he can add a feature that looks at your current
beats parameters and writes that into the *.ins file.

Thanks Tom,

Bob S. [tttsystems@earthlin k.net] (a big thanks to all who have helped me, I
apologies for being such a neophyte) posted a search that returns all the
current ROMs on E-Bay
Yes I will be getting an XL-7 as soon as I can get up the cash, I just
bought a ESI-32 on E-Bay it's got the full load of ram plus a CD and I got
it for less than $100 so I don't think I got hurt. Plus I've always wanted
a Sampler. Everything I read about it on Vintage Synth Explorer sounded
positive. I downloaded the Manual from E-Mu and have been pouring over it
so I hope I won't get in over my head with it. I've got some old SCSI
drives around so I'll probably get an external case and hook that up to it
as well. I continue to be impressed with the XL-7. Since I'm going to
invest in either more modules and an XL-7 is there any reason to buy that
upgraded ROM that's on E-Bay now? Apparently its version 2 and has 5 banks.
Does anyone know if the Proteus 1/2/3 (I'm looking at the 3) have slots for
additional rom banks? Does the Proteus 2000? I keep getting outbid on
these as I don't have time to sit and watch them but at some point I'll
catch one.

Hi John,

I know it sounds obvious but try Ebay....search under EMU ROM and see
what pops up. Alternatively put a wanted advert in the Readers Ads
section of Sound On Sound (www.soundonsound. com).

EMU stopped making these modules because they decided to get out of
hardware and move into software sounds instead....shame.

Here's a list of the expansion ROMs you can get:

Siedlaczek Orchestra 32 MB ROM.
Pure Phatt 32 MB ROM - standard in Mo'Phatt, MP-7 and MK-6.
Beat Garden 32 MB ROM - standard in Orbit 3.
Protozoa 16 MB ROM - standard in Proteus 1, 2, 3.
Definitive B-3 32 MB ROM - standard in B-3.
Techno Synth Construction Yard 32 MB ROM - standard in Orbit 3.
Orchestral Session Vol. 1 32 MB ROM - standard in Virtuoso 2000.
Orchestral Session Vol. 2 32 MB ROM - standard in Virtuoso 2000.
World Expedition 32 MB ROM - standard in Planet Earth.
Sounds of the ZR feat. Perfect Piano 32 MB ROM - standard in Ensoniq
Halo.
X-Lead 32 MB ROM - standard in Xtreme Lead-1, XL-7 and XK-6.

But you'll probably want the Composer ROM that comes in the Proteus
2000 if you want 'ordinary' sounds.

By the way, if you think the XL-1 is good, try and get hold of a
Command Station too(either XL-7 or MP-7)...I think they're awesome.

Several years ago, a member of the P2K group created a Cakewalk *.ins
file for all of the E-Mu ROM. However, it only has the presets/banks.
Since users can assign beats to any keys they want, it makes more
sense if users make their own key maps.

Hope this helps.

Hi John,

I know it sounds obvious but try Ebay....search under EMU ROM and see
what pops up. Alternatively put a wanted advert in the Readers Ads
section of Sound On Sound (www.soundonsound.com).

EMU stopped making these modules because they decided to get out of
hardware and move into software sounds instead....shame.

Here's a list of the expansion ROMs you can get:

Siedlaczek Orchestra 32 MB ROM.

Orchestral Session Vol. 2 32 MB ROM - standard in Virtuoso 2000.
World Expedition 32 MB ROM - standard in Planet Earth.

The manual for the XL-1 is still downloadable from the Emu website and that one
is not hard to read....

Ok I found an article that says the proteus can be reset holding down the
master and edit during power on, I'll try that. I have no manual, only a
PDF that is really hard to read.

I plugged my qs6.1 into the :XL1 set it to send on MIDI 1, 2, 3 selected
multi in the main window and tried to play, I got a cacophony of sound,
   and
now the XL1 has not installed in the display. Turning the selector goes
back to the regular voices but anytime I try to play it it goes back to
   not
installed. I can only assume that QS is trying to send a bank change to
   the
empty slot or something has happend to the installed XL1 ROM. My version
states it is version 1, I notice there is an XL1 module for sale on E-Bay
that says its version 2 and has 5 banks. Is there a way I can reset this
thing and start over? I will be really upset if I've destroyed my XL1.
