Subject: Anvil to open up two shows for AC/DC!

Congrats guys!!!

from Bravewords.com:

http://www.bravewords.com/news/115456

"Billboard.com has issued the following report from David J. Prince:

ANVIL, the Canadian heavy metal band that spent more than 30 years in near
obscurity before the documentary about its struggles became a surprise hit, is
getting the ultimate rock and roll salute this summer.

AC/DC, arguably the most successful hard rock band in history, has personally
selected Anvil as the sole support act for two arena shows - July 28th at
Gillette Stadium in Boston and July 31st at Giants Stadium in New Jersey.

The stadium shows will mark a new chapter in Anvil's late-blooming fame."

again - from Bravewords.com:

http://www.bravewords.com/news/115464

"Nationalpost.com is reporting:

"Doing the gig is the easy part, getting the gig is what's tough," says Steve
"Lips" Kudlow, front man for ANVIL, the heavy metal band which recently booked
the opening slot on the AC/DC stadium tour. "I last saw AC/DC with my
11-year-old at the Air Canada Centre. Now, he'll get to see me open for the band
in the states. It's bombastic, man. Really, really incredible stuff."

Anvil's ride has been incredible since they first banged their head. The band
formed in 1978 in Toronto, and after experiencing some success as speed metal
pioneers, the group was surpassed by like-minded leather-clad peers like SLAYER
and MOTÖRHEAD. However, Anvil never stopped rocking and, even while working day
jobs, they continued to tour and record. Anvil! The Story Of Anvil, was a hit
film and is currently playing in cinemas.

According to Kudlow, the film helped bring them back to the public eye.

"What it came down to is the fact that AC/DC will benefit because they're the
guys who extended a hand to help Anvil out," Kudlow says. "I don't know if they
saw the movie or not. I just know a decision was made by Angus [Young, AC/DC's
guitarist] and he wanted see Anvil triumph and succeed."

Subject: Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden) on Anvil
captain2man

Nicko just did an interview with Mark Morton from Examiner.com about a few
things - including the new Iron Maiden documentary, Flight 666 (I saw a small
clip from it and it looks pretty interesting).

Among many topics....the subject of Anvil came up....here's an excerpt, but you
can read the whole thing here:

http://www.examiner.com/x-5629-Heavy-Metal-Examiner~y2009m6d10-Listen-With-Nicko\
-Part-Flight-666-Exclusive-Interview-with-Iron-Maiden-Drummer-Nicko-McBrain

--------------------

Examiner.com: When I was watching Flight 666, it made me think about Anvil! The
Story of Anvil, and how your movie is somewhat of the flipside to theirs. You
both are bands that struggled very hard to make it in a genre that the general
public did not understand, you never gave up. But where your hard work
eventually clicked, theirs, for whatever reason never did. What are your
feelings on that?

McBrain: "Yeah, you're absolutely right. But, you know what I love about them?
They're true to form, true to what they love, true to what they do.

We were very fortunate to be at the right place at the right time, and knew who
we knew. We've been blessed with two of the best managers in the business and
have been for nearly 30 years.

And, it seems that the boys from Anvil didn't really have that. The one thing
you can rely on is that they remained true to their faith in what they do and
what they believe in. they stood by their guns and never compromised.

The problem there is that they didn't have anyone who believed in them as much
as they believed in themselves. And I think that's what Maiden what we are and
how we've survived through today is class, panache, a good-looking frickin'
drummer, and good management."

Hi,

My name is Cammy and I have just joined Academy of Anvil. I read about Anvil
some time ago now and have been a big fan of their Hard'n'Heavy album for a long
time.

I am ashamed to say that I have never looked into their other records but having
read about their massive back catalogue I am now discovering their work. I think
that with all the effort that they have put in for over 30 years it is finally
time to make it big and to get the recognition they deserve.

I have managed to get tickets for their gig in Edinburgh in November with one of
the incarnations of Saxon currently touring and am totally looking forward to
that moment.

As Tommy Vance used to say, "Rock on!"

Welcome Cammy!  Good to hear there are new fans. :)  I think a lot of us will
highly recommend 'Forged In Fire' and 'Metal On Metal' as great albums.  I
personally also like the live 'Past And Present' as well as 'Pound For Pound'.
Enjoy them with Saxon, that should be a rollicking good time!

Yup welcome Cammy!

I like Forged in Fire, Past and Present, Plenty of Power and This is Thirteen!
And they have great songs on all their other albums too! Check 'em out :)

Too bad about Edinburgh - I am going to miss that gig, because I will be
arriving there only on Nov 9th. but I think my fiancée who is living there right
now is going to catch it.

Take care,

Hey, just joined up. Been a fan of the group since the late 80's.
So I was thinking about who would be good on a bill with Anvil on this current
US tour coming up. And one band keeps coming to mind as being perfect.....RAVEN!

I would love to see these two on a bill.
I don't know who is booking this thing, but c'mon! Both bands have been around
since the late 70's early 80's..Both have had label/management woes..Both have
had a long hard road..But only one had a movie-guy in thier corner..So
hey,Lipps, you hit the friggin' rock n' roll lottery man..Time to pay that shit
forward..Give Raven a call, and hook em' up with a few support slots!..

Hi Ben, and welcome to the list!

Actually Raven was at Ivan's wedding party (with Robb filling in on drums) and
so was my own band, if was fun sharing the same stage as those two great bands
that night. (And I'd love to see our footage and Raven's from the movie if there
was any in the cuts!) That is an excellent idea, those guys rock!

Nah man, you got me wrong.
Of course they paid the dues..I was just pointing out that for most bands,
getting a second chance at recognition after years of being (for most people) a
'what ever happened to..' act..Is about as rare as hitting the powerball...Most
rock n' roll bands only ever get one shot, if they're lucky.

Oh, I got another perfect opener THE RODS!

Subject: quick commentary & a question for Anvil fans new & old
captain2man

First off....just want to say that when I started this group....I could never in
a zillion years have imagined that 9 years later Anvil would be in the position
that they are.

I've been a fan of Anvil since the late 80s - just after Strength of Steel came
out - but didn't get to see them until the late 90s when they played The
Continental in New York City after Speed of Sound had come out.

Since then - I've probably seen them play about a dozen times in clubs in the
tri-state area....and - until the movie came out - I doubt I ever saw them play
in front of more than 20 people.

Aside from the music - what endeared me to them was basically exactly what
people see in the movie.

No matter that they may have driven down to Toronto to play a show in
Queens....the same night as Iron Maiden played Madison Square Garden....in front
of 5 people....they played just as hard (and heavy) as they would if they were
playing in a full arena.

If they were disappointed at the turnout (and they must have been) - they hid it
from the fans. Lips, Robb, Glenn and Ivan were always friendly, would sign
anything you wanted them to, and would chat for a bit.

Lips was always responsive to my e-mails and even though I wouldn't at all
consider myself "friends" with him - he's always recognized me at shows and took
the time to at least say a quick "hello".

To see what's happened to them because of this movie is absolutely mind-blowing
to me. Seeing this band go from playing in front of 10 people at 2 a.m.
somewhere - to opening up for AC/DC at Giants Stadium and getting all this press
& attention is simply unbelievable and I couldn't possibly be happier for them.

My question is this, though.....and this is for the old diehards who have been
fans of the band since before the movie era - as well as people who have joined
up because they saw the movie and want to dig a little deeper into the band....

In the long run - what will come of Anvil because of the impact of this movie?

The gut reaction is to say that the movie has made Anvil a more popular band.

Well - I'm sure that this is definitely true. Anvil have become almost a
household name at this point.

But WHAT exactly is gaining in popularity?? Is it the band as a musical,
creative entity who records & tours??.....OR....is it the band themselves - as
people.

Since the movie has come out - Anvil has not played an actual "show" in the NYC
area....it's been "The Anvil Experience" - where the movie is played basically
as an opening act - followed by an Anvil "concert". When I saw the premiere of
the film at Gramercy Theater in New York City, this "concert" was a grand total
of maybe 15-20 minutes and that was it.

At some point - Anvil will need to "detach" from the movie. The movie will
always exist to be watched, of course....but at some point, the hype will die
down and the movie will fade from view - just like anything in life.

Will the popularity of the band continue & increase? Will record sales and back
catalog numbers increase?

When Anvil are no longer playing shows with it's own movie as the opening
act.....when they come and play some club in NYC again....will the audiences be
larger than they were before?

What exactly is being made "popular" due to this movie?

Where will Anvil be - as a band - 2 years after the attention given to them from
the movie has subsided?

If their audience increases and maintains itself - I'm sure they will continue
to write songs, make records & play live for as long as they can do it.

But what if that doesn't happen?

Can they ever "go back home again" and go back to playing some clubs somewhere
in front of 25 people again? Can you get the red carpet/rock star treatment as
they are now and go back to where they were through the 90s and the first part
of the '00s?

It's not a question that can really be answered....but I just wanted to throw
these thoughts out there and see what the Anvil "community" had to say about
this.

What do the old diehard fans think? You guys were around before the movie and
your love for the band isn't just based on a curiosity factor because of the
movie. You will be there as long as Anvil exists - even if they go back to
playing small shows again.

What do the newer people think? Are you here because you saw the movie, like
Lips & Robb as people?....find them interesting?....so you're curious? Have you
sought out some of their old records and given them a listen? Do you like them?
Would you buy a new Anvil record or go see them if they played somewhere - and
it was JUST them - no movie?

Would love to hear people's thoughts on this stuff.

(P.S. Sorry for being such a stranger from this group....as I always say when I
peak in for a look....I'll try better).

(P.P.S. If anyone saw the episode of That Metal Show when Anvil were featured -
I was the guy in the Stump the Trunk part of the show who asked the
Anvil-related question ("What was the name of the band before they called
themselves Anvil?")....I did stump Eddie & got a Motorhead CD of it. If you
listen closely - you can hear Lips off-camera say "captain2man" as I'm stepping
to the mic....that was awesome!)

As a very old school fan (for obvious reasons) I would have to agree with quite
a bit of what you said here.

Once the film has eventually run its course and that day will come are fans and
non metal fans STILL willing to see ANVIL in the clubs 2-3 years from now?? And
sit through a FULL 60-90 set not just 2-4 songs?

I also think a touring guitarist really would add to some of the thickness for
some of the material
& I sorta wish that a band and not the movie was the "opening act" for the
forthcoming US tour next year because its almost like a crutch in some
regards....its an experiment thats worked so far during the screenings for the
past year but now the ANVIL Experience is coming into actual locations built for
music and I want them at some point to feel that they can bring in crowds on
their own without the celluoid assist.

Agree completely with your thoughts here.

The post-"detachment" from the movie (as we're calling it) era of Anvil will be
interesting to watch.

Of course - there's never been a more obvious sequel to a movie than this one,
too. A movie about their experiences since this movie came out would probably
be just as fascinating as the original.

But I really wanted to respond in TOTAL agreement to the idea of getting a
rhythm guitarist again. I'm sure there are totally valid reasons for why Ivan
is no longer in the band....but they've had a few rhythm guitarists in the
past....they've always been a quartet - and it works for them musically.

There's definitely something missing from the sound without that 2nd guitar....I
hope it's something they think about at some point.

You don't want to mess with chemistry.....and NEW songs written as a trio might
work live....but the old songs are definitely missing something but not having
that other guitar playing.

Hmmm....I think they are at their peak right now. Hopefully it lasts for awhile
longer. I think their popularity will drop down but not as far down as it was.
It would be nice if they could continue their career and make some money (rather
than spending or breaking even).

I sequel would be cool. Sacha has filmed alot of the aftermath. However I don't
think it would do as well. People like to watch the underdogs win. Now that they
have won....the story isn't going to have the same pull. I'd still like to watch
it though. :)

PS...I'd like to see a 2nd guitarist added. Sebastian Marino would be cool.

I don't think they've hit the peak yet.. it's still coming.. it's still
ramping up.

A sequel would be cool.. and you're right.. it wouldn't have quite the
same effect on people.. but I think it would still get a big audience.

3 piece is killer. I saw them 5 or 6 times with Ivan.. and when he
left... I've seen them 3 or 4 times since.. and it was so much heavier..
so much more together.. there was a different, more powerful energy
about them onstage. 3-piece is where they are meant to be.

ANVIL!
Matt.

Since the movie and 're-discovering" of Anvil by me..(I'm a guy in his late
30's who bought Metal On Metal when it came out in the 80's and have checked in
on them from time to time since then), I see the fame arc going someting like
this:

There will probably be a drop-off in concert attendance once the film is not
fresh in the general public's minds..BUT there will be alot of NEW, REAL fans
going through their back catalog and getting into the band for real, not just
for the "oh,that band from the VH1 movie" kind of passing curiosity..

Look, it happened with Aerosmith in the early-mid 80's, Before they got
clean/before hired songwriters came in/before 'Permanant Vacation' and the
career ressurection with the Run DMC video..They couldn't get arrested..they
were pretty much a washed up band that no one but the die-hards cared about
anymore..Now, they are back 'on top'... even though that means they put out
shitty records now and Stephen Tyler wants to just call it a day..they still
sell more records/concert tickets than when they were putting out truly awesome
shit like 'Draw The Line'.

My point is: The general public are a fickle bunch, whats 'hot' now never stays
'hot'. But its not them that Anvil are playing for anyway, its always been for
the true fans..

Lips and Rob are guys in their 50's now, with families..This could be the last
go-round for them..But at least they are wrapping things up on a high note..With
some money in the bank at last.

How are the guys from Anvil doing now that the movie has hit the mainstream?
Anyone know if they've yet been signed?  On what label can you buy their albums?

They're doing a lot better in the biz.. they don't have day jobs any
more.. They have some label (VH1 Classics I believe) support and proper
management (same manager as Slayer, I believe).. They're currently on
tour in the UK with Saxon, and have a 4-5 week US, headlining tour
coming up in January. Not to mention the all the press and festivals,
etc they've continually been doing since Sundance Film Fest '08. Over
this past summer they also play 3 opening spots for ACDC.

Here's to this great, long deserved success, lasting a long time!!

That is great to hear.  I will try and see them if/when I get the opportunity.
It is amazing that they stuck to that style despite all the hardships.  They
would obviously rather excel at what they know and love then follow the herds.

Their story inspired me in my own struggles, making things happen as a young
attorney, basically on my own, starting out with a monumental mountain of debt.
I know it's not as interesting a story, but the concepts are the same.  At the
very least, these Anvil guys have inspired me drive on.  I think they are
great.

I'm not the biggest metal fan, but I will definitely listen to Anvil.  I am
going to start with their first album and work my way through the archives.
