Dimitri,

No doubt what you say is true. Although I'm still much inclined to
the "Field of Dreams" hypothesis: If you build it, they will come.
And if the orchestras perform contemporary classical music, they will
also attend. Even if the audience lacks technical knowledge, it can
still be guided by its ear, however unfamiliar the work. Good work
can win listeners over in spite of these difficulties.

And also there is the decline of pop music at the moment. I can't
help thinking that my resurgence of interest in classical music is
partly due to that. I have no other new music to distract me. At
any rate, I've seen some odd things lately and I suppose that
anything can happen. We may all be buying tickets for arena
performances of Gorecki before we're done.
