I may be naively optimistic, but agree with John that people WILL
come out to hear contemporary music. However, the marketing might
have to be done, for example by offering Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto
#3, as the main piece, then slip in a piece by Michael Nyman.
Or perhaps a Tarrega main bill, with some Aleksandr Tansman on the
side. What about a serving of Szymanowski with Gorecki on the side?
Anyone interested in hearing some contemporary classical music might
want to try Canada's CBC Radio 2 (http://www.cbc.ca/audio.html),which
can be heard on the Internet, if you don't happen to live near the
Canadian border. They will feature up and coming classical composers
and musicians, in addition to the established ones.
Another way of getting new music performed is to weigh in at your
local classical music radio station and if they play more, it might
encourage the orchestras and ensembles to expand their repertoires.
As you pointed out John, the atrocious excuse for music that is the
MTV pop-culture today has created a vaccuum that classical music can
fill. As proof that people are open to discovering classical music,
about 4 years ago, montreal finally got a commercial classical music
station. The owner had tried for years before to get a license, but
the governing body said it would not work, and would never make money.
Ever since the first ratings book, this station has been up around
5th in a market of over 20 stations, consistently. An awesome
achievemnet.... and one that speaks volumes.
