Singing
Protest
Parliament House
steps, Adelaide
Wednesday 1st July
2009, 1-2pm
Peace-loving people welcome to come and join
us
in this non-violent protest - wear black and
red clothes.
The South
Australian Government boasts that it is committed to "the defence
industry", to making South Australia "the Defence
State". They boast for example that:
"South
Australia is completing a dramatic modernisation of strategic hard
infrastructure to support [defence] industry growth." And: "This
state's defence future is being built on a strong base."
As part of
their push to turn South Australia into what they call "the Defence
State", the State Government has for instance allocated over $300
million (taxpayers' money) to the establishment of Techport, a
development aimed to bring more and more military manufacturing
industries to SA.
The SA
Government is also the major supporter of the "Defence + Industry
Conference & Trade Exhibition" being held June 30th to July 2nd
at the Adelaide Convention Centre.
This
Government push for turning us into "the Defence State"
will mean that people here in South Australia will increasingly come
to depend for our economic security on jobs that produce weapons and
weapons systems, and products such as submarines and air warfare
destroyers.
This is an "industry" that brings death and suffering to millions of people in conflict zones around the world.
Do we South Australians wish our state to be part of an "industry" that causes death and injury, grief, mental anguish and environmental loss? Do we wish to continue to allow our politicians to use our taxpayers' dollars to turn us into "the Defence State"?
We believe
that there's a better way: by using our state's resources to develop
more jobs in renewable energy for instance: in solar, geothermal, wind
and tidal energies.
