Subject: Letter writing campaign: please write to Mike Rann about Kevin Foley's public use of oppressive language

Dear Adelaide peace singers,

Earlier this week, the South Australian branch of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) wrote to the South Australian Premier, Mike Rann concerning the oppressive language that his Treasurer and Deputy Premier, Kevin Foley, recently used against peace activists. A copy of the WILPF letter is appended below.

WILPF (SA) wishes to encourage members and supporters to write to Mr Rann in support of this letter-writing campaign.

With thanks,

Cathy

10th September 2008

The Hon Mike Rann, MP
Premier and Minister for Social Inclusion
200 Victoria Square
ADELAIDE   SA   5000

Dear Mr Rann,

We write in reference to various public comments by your Deputy Premier and Treasurer, Mr Foley. While the grave implications of the substance of Mr Foley's statements are the subject of separate correspondence with you and members of your Ministry, we write now in particular concerning Mr Foley's language.

Over recent months, Mr Foley has demonstrated a pattern of immoderate public speech.  Indeed, it has become clear that Mr Foley is in the habit of using oppressive language.

We note, for instance, that Mr Foley was quoted on Wednesday 7th May 2008 in a number of media outlets as having spoken thus in reference to prisoners in our state's penal system:

"What we're making very clear is that if we've got to rack 'em, pack 'em and stack 'em, we will."

More recently, he has described peace activists, among whom we number ourselves, as "feral low-life" (Adelaide Now, September 7, 2008).

We can only presume from these of his public comments that Mr Foley believes that he may stand to gain some electoral advantage by portraying himself - and your Government - as "tough and macho". This is not the case. You will no doubt be aware that Mr Foley's comments are unwelcome to many women voters in SA, and, we suspect, to many men as well. In a changed electoral climate when the Northern Territory and West Australian Labor Governments have struggled in recent times to maintain their electoral advantage, we believe that Mr Foley has become a liability for SA Labor.

Of more concern to us, however, is the climate of intolerance and xenophobia which is fueled and cultivated in the community by such comments in the mouth of a person who holds a high office in the state government. This is especially the case when there is apparently no attempt within the government to moderate Mr Foley's style of language. Mr Foley's language is not simply flamboyant; it is speech of hatred and violence and, as such, is indefensible.

We therefore respectfully urge that Mr Foley be encouraged to undertake an appropriate anger management course and that he be counselled against the use of immoderate, oppressive and violent language.

Yours sincerely,

Cathy Picone

Hey all,

What a fantastic protest we had this morning in Adelaide! For the
very busy peak hour between about 8 and 9am, twenty (or so) of us
carried placards around the four sides of the most central pedestrian
crossing, right in the centre of the city. Our placards read:
"Ordinary people stopped the arms expo" and "SA says no defence
industry state" etc. etc. There was a great variety of words - which
had been painted last night on many placards by Irene and Kate and
Richard. Thanks!! And thanks to Craig and Jake for a great press
release - which got Jake at least two interviews, one with ABC TV and
one with Radio Adelaide.

We got lots of encouragement and thanks from pedestrians and
motorists. One bus driver was very, very welcoming and full of
smiles. Lots of people took our fliers - thanks to Jason for bringing
them back from Melbourne, and to Dimity and team for the graphic
design and printing - to Kate and Irene again for putting an updated
sticker on them announcing "peace activists win - arms expo
cancelled".

The idea for the moving protest came out of our meeting in Adelaide
yesterday afternoon - thanks, Ruth! With our team work, we made such
a friendly protest this morning that two young women passing by
joined us in the protest - and carried placards with us. Even a
policeman passing by said he supported us - except for some graffiti
he'd seen on some private property!

Dear Protest Singers

My guess is that the event would have been a public relations disaster for the SA government.    I wonder if they did their own polling that showed an unfavourable public response.

Ya gotta be proud of what public protest can achieve.

Hey, if it comes up again, lets aim for a choir of a thousand.  They'll need 2000 police for that.  :-)

Dear protest singers,

Although the arms expo has been cancelled, the singing protest
workshop will go ahead next Saturday 13th September in Adelaide as
scheduled. And, if you're able, you may like to join us in the moving
protest tomorrow morning, Monday 8th September, 8am to 9am. For that
hour, we will walk around the pedestrian crossing at the corner of
North Terrace and King William Street, Adelaide, holding placards.
Thanks to Kate and Irene and Richard for making the placards!

Ciao,

Cathy

Hi Veronica,
I'm glad you found it helpful. It's nice to get feedback. Yes, I like your quote from Stephanie Dowrick. I work with adult new arrivals and sometimes wonder how to discuss war and weapons with them - so many have had initimate contact with wars. The idea of simply stopping producing killing machinery is an appealingly simple one.

Thank you Melina for this information. It was very helpful to me, and informed my thinking.

I remember a presentation I went to at the Adelaide 'Festival of Ideas' many years ago by Stephanie Dowrick. Stephanie's words have remained with me since, she posed the question, 'what kind or world would we live in if she invested our billions of dollars in making peace instead of in defence and making war?'

*Hi everyone... 2 weeks until we sing together again :-)

Meanwhile, the APDSE protest www site has had a heap of updates if you
want to check it out... (heaps of 'what you can do', events and such...
including our events of course!

http://www.apdsexhibition.org/

And I've received news of this documentary about the AIDEX protests of
1991 (the last time there was a national weapons fair, and a national
protest to match) with interviews with a range of people who were there,
what they remember and the conclusions they drew.

You've Got To Party For Your Right To Fight: The AIDEX '91 Protests
*January 2008
In 1991 the Australian movement for peace and social had a rare victory
when around 1000 people successfully disrupted the Australian
International Defence Exhibition (AIDEX) to the point where all future
events of a similar kind were cancelled. With the Asia Pacific Defence
and Security exhibition to be held in Adelaide this November now is a
good time to revisit what happened at AIDEX '91 and what made the
blockade and protest so successful. In this 80 minute documentary,
produced by Iain McIntyre, six protestors talk about their experiences
at AIDEX '91 and how it shaped their views on the media, police violence
and peace activism. Download MP3

Hello Friends,

Someone may have done this before – I don’t know, having just joined this group. I thought if you’re interested in knowing what Non Violent Direct Action (NVDA) is all about, you might benefit from taking a look at some of what others have published on the web about this subject. I hope it will encourage you to take advantage of the training that has been offered.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, and I’ve tried to give a little insight into each link. There are some pages with stories from AIDEX 1989 and AIDEX 1991, the precursors to this November’s APDSE.

Happy Reading,
Melina

Affinity Groups http://www.starhawk.org/activism/affinitygroups.html

Affinity Groups are one of the tools used by NVDA activists to organise and support one another in all phases of actions.

AIDEX campaign moves to Canberra (20 November 1991)

http://www.greenleft.org.au/1991/36/169

This Press Release published in Green Left Weekly outlines some of the political impact that organisers were having on whether the second AIDEX would even go ahead. The Hawke Government and Desiko Pty Ltd, the company which organised the arms fairs, were worried. As history tells, it did go ahead, as did the massive protest action.

Breaching the Peace – AIDEX 1989 and 1991 http://www.mersigns.blogspot.com/

I wrote this article in response to reading accounts by other activists about the protests at AIDEX, in an effort to clarify in my own mind the values of NVDA and why I am committed to it. I think the singing workshops are such a wonderful expression of what we can do to enhance our activism.

Defeat from the jaws of victory? (28/2/1992)  http://home.vtown.com.au/~jmcnicol/NvT/26/26.2.txt

This article poses some serious questions about NVDA and the protest at AIDEX 1991.

Direct Action http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_action#Nonviolent_direct_action This Wikipedia article has a UK focus, and touches on the fuzzy line that exists between violent and non-violent direct action where property damage is concerned.

Nonviolence http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonviolence

This Wikipedia article is valuable because it shows the evidence of non-violent lifestyles and activities that range through many human cultures, including non-western cultures. It also talks about Green Party politics around the world.

Organizing Guide: non-violent direct action http://www.ibiblio.org/netchange/cco/orgaction.html

This is a USA-focused article about making change actions on campus. I like it, because it offers advice on what to consider when planning an action.

Strategic Nonviolent Direct Action – what it is and how to get some happening

http://www.animal-lib.org.au/subjects/subjects/nonviolent-direct-action.htm

This page from Animal Liberation has excellent sub-headings and is an inspiring read. It is explicit in talking about the impact that taking NVDA can have on your life and what it takes to make a commitment to NVDA.

Peace – Arms Activism (Women’s Web) http://home.vicnet.net.au/~womenweb/actions/Peace%20-%20Arms%20Activism.htm

The section on this page by Hellen Cooke of WILPF (Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom) describes the NVDA that WILPF women took at AIDEX 1989 and 1991. Cooke also writes about the impact that the protests had on people who were living in Canberra, where they were held.

The Story of the Australian Nonviolence Network http://www.nonviolence.org.au/downloads/ann_story.pdf

This article by Peter Jones, Margaret Pestorius and Bryan Law offers interesting insights into how members of this organisation interacted with other activist groups at AIDEX 1991 and many other protest actions.

Hi Peace Singers,

If any of you are interested in doing Nonviolence Training soon in preparation for the APDSE protest, Greenpeace are offering training soon (details below).  There will be other opportunities closer to the protest too.

To participate in thsi training you need to book with Simon ASAP as spaces are limited:
pandragonau@...

thanks, Mary

Non violent direct action (NVDA) is a core principle of the work Greenpeace does. Greenpeace uses NVDA as a means of peaceful protest to expose global environmental problems and force solutions that ensure a green and peaceful future.Greenpeace believes that violence in any form is morally wrong and accomplishes nothing. No one gets hurt during a Greenpeace non violent direct action because activists are fully trained prior to any direct action involvement.

Greenpeace did not invent NVDA. Earlier NVDA examples include the mass civil disobedience in India lead by Mahatma Gandhi and the lunch counter sit-ins of the US civil rights movement. Greenpeace's philosophy draws on the Quaker tradition of bearing witness to raise awareness and bring public opinion to bear on decision makers. This has been strengthened by the practice of NVDA in global environmental campaigns. Greenpeace uses NVDA to expose global environmental problems and to force solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future. Greenpeace believes that violence in any form is morally wrong and accomplishes nothing.

IMPORTANT DETAILS FOR THE TRAINING:

where: the Morialta Resource centre (located on the crner of Stradbroke rd and Morialta rd
(you can catch the 104 or 105 bus from the city- departing from Currie st, grenfell st, pulteney st or North tce and get off at Bus Stop number 26)
When: 10am sharp start till 6pm
Date: 30th of August 2008

Food: a vegetarian lunch will be provided please bring your own water and let me know if you have any dietary requirements.

What to bring: appropriate clothing for being outdoors and you are able to move freely in.

for more information on the venue  please see their website here:

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the group and anxious to exercise the old voice that hasn't
been used for years. What a great gathering for the August rehearsal.
Unfortunately I'm working overseas at the moment and won't be able to
front up in person until October. Until then, it's great participating
via webmail.

Cheers!
David.

Just a little note to say that both water and cups are available at
the Quaker Meeting House, so there's no need to bring your own.

Looking forward to tomorrow,

Adelaide Women in Black Vigil
Silent vigil against war, violence and militarisation
Parliament House steps, Adelaide

Wednesday 30th July 2008, 5 - 6pm

In November this year, Adelaide will play host to a big armaments expo. It's called the Asia-Pacific Defence and Security Exhibition (or APDSE) and is due to open on 11 November - which is Remembrance Day, a day set aside to honour our soldiers and civilians who have suffered in wars.

Last year, world military expenditure was US$1,339 billion - the equivalent of 600 years of the United Nation's budget. This money - which mostly ends up in the pockets of the big weapons manufacturers - does not bring us security.

For human security to be achieved, our economic resources need to be focused on addressing the real threats to the security of citizens - poverty, hunger, climate change and environmental degradation.  Weapons can do nothing to alleviate these security problems.  Instead, the acquisition of arms diverts enormous financial, technical and human resources from where they are really needed to a few armaments manufacturing corporations. We can no longer afford every day being "pay day" for these arms profiteers.

Women in Black would prefer to see Remembrance Day marked as it ought to be, rather than with the opening of an exhibition designed to make money out of the sale of armaments. We believe that hosting APDSE - aka the Asia-Pacific Death and Suffering Exhibition - is a great shame for our state.

Women in Black call on Premier Rann and the South Australian Government to cancel APDSE and all future arms exhibitions. Let's seek our economic security through industries that promote life, not death and suffering.

Women in Black is an international anti-war movement.
Vigils have been held in countries such as Italy, USA,
Canada, Germany, India, Palestine and Israel
as well as most Australian capitals.

Dear Peace Singers,

NOWAR are organising a fundraiser for the protest: a quiz night. I
have pasted in the details below in case you would like to go along!

all the best, Mary Heath

Dear NoWar Members and Supporters

Three events are upcoming that we know you will want to be involved in!

Our main activity in the period from now to November will be in
relation to the Australian peace movement's protest and resistance to
the Asia-Pacific Defence and Security Exhibition 11-13 November 2008
Adelaide. Peace and anti-war groups all over Australia are currently
collaborating on a series of events that will be in place from the
weekend prior to this arms fair through Tuesday 11 - Thursday 13
November. Please note that the arms fair commences on ARMISTICE DAY,
11 November – the day we remember the cost and futility of war.

This is planned to be an arms fair extraordinaire which is fully
supported by the South Australian Government because it is a key event
in the agenda for transforming SA into "The Defence State". See the
Expo website (link above) and check out the SA State Strategic Plan
for the references to militarising our economy; see also the website
of DefenceSA to see the details of the projects already under way to
bring this about – that website proudly declares South Australia to be
"The Home of Some of the World's Leading Defence Companies". If you
would like to check out the connections between the defence industry
and the arms trade, hire Nicolas Cages' movie Lord of War from your
local video shop. Sure it's a commercial movie, but it's an easy way
to have a look at this topic and to also view the 15 minute Amnesty
International documentary that comes with it. NoWar's position is
that rather than turn SA into the Defence State, the interests of the
great majority of South Australians would be better served by a quite
different strategy – one aimed at developing technologies and creating
products that answer people's real needs.

We will let you know about the program of events once they are
established, and which NoWar ones we will need you for as the time
approaches – so stay tuned!

In order to fund our activities in relation to the arms fair, we will
be holding fund raisers in the near future. We are working on a film
fund raiser – hopefully with Standard Operating Procedure. Details to
be announced - don't see it without us! In the meantime, please put
our QUIZ NIGHT into your schedule:

NoWar QUIZ NIGHT
