The Australian Government's Department of Defence will be hosting a Defence +
Industry Conference and Trade Exhibition at the Adelaide Convention Centre,
North Terrace, 30 June to 2 July 2009. At this conference, potential contractors
will "maximise their business opportunities" with the Department of Defence.

In terms of government funding, Defence receives special treatment. Over the
past 14 years, there has been a 37% increase in Australian Defence expenditure
in real terms. Defence spending has been guaranteed to increase by 3% per annum
in real terms up to and including the Federal Government's 2017-18 budget. By
comparison, these projected increases are more than three times the budget
allocated to restore the Murray Darling River System (about $12B).

If you would like to express your opposition to this disproportionate government
spending and to the arms trade in general, you are invited to join us in a
series of four workshops. People of all sexes, ages and singing abilities are
welcome to come to any or all of three singing workshops and one non-violent
direct action workshop.

Singing protest workshops: 1.30-4.30pm Saturdays 9th May, 30th May and 13th June
Quaker Meeting Hall, 40A Pennington Terrace, North Adelaide

Non-violent direct action workshop: 1.30-4.30pm Saturday 27th June
Westcare Church Hall, 216 Wright St, Adelaide
Entry from Millers Court which runs alongside

We will be learning suitable songs and deciding how we can use music most
effectively as part of the wider campaign to protest this Conference in
particular and the global arms trade in general.

You are welcome to come to as many of the workshops as you can, and to sing with
us for peace to protest the Conference in June/ July. There will be no
auditions. These FREE workshops are being organised by Women's International
League for Peace and Freedom and will be run by Mary Heath.

If you have email access, please sign up to our online mailing list so that we
can keep you up to date with planned events, times and places. Adelaide Peace

Dear Adelaide peace singers/ protesters,

As you may know, the Australian Government's Department of Defence and the Defence Materiel Organisation will be hosting a Defence + Industry Conference and Trade Exhibition at the Adelaide Convention Centre, North Terrace, 30 June to 2 July 2009.

In order to allow us to protest this conference and trade exhibition in a non-violent way, the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) will once again be holding a series of workshops similar to last year's APDSE singing protest workshops.

During the months of May and June 2009 in the lead-up to the Defence + Industry Conference, WILPF will be holding three singing protest workshops, and one non-violent direct action workshop.

You will recall that last year's workshops were led by Mary Heath and Vicki Bennett. Mary and I met this morning to arrange dates for the 2009 workshops and a venue. When we've got those details sorted (hopefully by tomorrow!), we'll get back to you with the full information.

In peace,

Cathy

Dear Peter, Damien, Mary, Vicki etc

I think there’s never a really good reason to stop singing. However I think we have an especially good reason to start again with this “trade exhibition”. I hope the organisers of the group will feel able to start it again. I only joined just before the cancellation of the APDSE, so never actually attended a rehearsal, but I’m keen to do so now.

Thanks for posting this, Cathy. Friends in the US referred me to it earlier in the week - more than one said it had them in tears.  I took some copies of all the words and we sang it at the Rainbow Sessions at the Brecknock tonight.

Dear South Australian WILPF members and friends,

As you may know from previous emails, the Peace and Remembrance Festival is coming up very soon - on Sunday November 9, 12 - 6 pm in Elder Park. The Peace and Remembrance Festival is part of the ongoing campaign of peace and environment groups to highlight (and eventually stop) South Australia becoming "the Defence State".

SA Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) will be having a stall at the Peace and Remembrance Festival. Many thanks to our stall keeper, Cynthia James, who has gathered a good team of WILPFers to staff the stall for the Festival.

Thank you all for your help with publicising the Peace and Remembrance Festival by distributing (and/ or printing and displaying) the poster for the Festival which was sent to you earlier. Another copy is attached with this email. Please forward it to your friends/ networks in SA if you haven't done that already.

There will also be a protest action at DefenceSA, 99 Frome Street, Adelaide on Tuesday November 11 at 4.30 pm. The leaflet for that action has also been sent out recently. If you'd like that one sent again, please let me know.

WILPF (SA)has made a donation of $200 to the Peace and Remembrance Festival but still needed are loans of shade tents and/ or beach umbrellas, to shade the mixing desk for the sound mixing system, as well as for other purposes. As performers at the Festival will be given hampers, if you have some item/s that could go well in a hamper or shade tents or umbrellas, please let me know.

With warm wishes and thanks for your help,

Cathy

Hello Singers

On Tuesday evening 14th October at 7pm there will be a public meeting at the Woodville Town Hall, 72 Woodville Rd.

The State Government has decided to sell off  70% of the Cheltenham Pk Racecourse site for development, having agreed to keep only 30% for wetlands and green space.

Several grassroots groups have called this meeting in the hope of raising awareness and interest in calling for a governmental re-think of those figures so that the land be only (or at least mostly) used for water harvesting and community space (Water and the state we're in pdf).

Anne McMenamin has written a song 'Participate or Perish' which is to be sung during the meeting by a small group on stage and we thought it would be good to have more people in the audience singing it too, to invite the community to sing along.

If anyone is interested and available for this sing, we're planning a practice tonight at the Bowden Brompton Community Centre at 7pm (Come and sing pdf). If you can't make this one, we are also planning a practice before the meeting itself at 6.30 at Woodville.

Feel free to contact me on my mobile 0411 536 649 if need be.

WILPF 2008 International Day of Peace Statement

On 30 November 1981, the United Nations General Assembly, in resolution A/RES/36/67, declared an international day of peace. This resolution recognized that "the promotion of peace, both at an international and a national level, is among the main purposes of the United Nations, in conformity with its Charter". Since 1915, the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) has worked to promote peace by non-violent means, promoting political, economic and social justice for all.

World military expenditures are estimated to have been USD 1,339 billion in 2007, or about 202 spent for every person on earth.[1] Article 26 of the UN Charter obliges the UN Security Council to "promote the establishment and maintenance of international peace and security with the least division for armaments of the world's human and economic resources", and the Security Council has failed to meet this obligation. You get what you pay for, and when governments of the world decide to prioritize peace building through education, health care, strengthening public infrastructures, and sustainable development over the purchase of arms, then these governments will begin walking down the path towards peace and break the military spending- poverty cycle.

WILPF calls on all governments to allocate one day of their military expenditures USD 3,668,493,151 towards addressing a real security threat such as catastrophic climate change. We must have a paradigm shift in resource allocation. We can meet this challenge, but only if we are prepared to face the fact that bombs, guns, cluster bombs and landmines will not deter or remove the threat of a Tsunami, a hurricane, a flood, a virus, or a water shortage. WILPF rejects the idea that the military industry and the weapons trade bring jobs, prosperity or security. The arms trade has turned people into mercenaries and parts of our planet into cemeteries.

Misusing words such as "safety" and "protection", military security concepts and weapons profiteers develop machines that threaten and violate the human right to life and freedom. This year, 2008 marks the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and in order that all peoples enjoy all human rights military and national security concepts that rely on weaponization and militarization must shift towards a holistic human security concept that recognizes people not profits, sustainability not strife, multilateralism not militarism.

In the name of "democracy’" powerful actors make profits at the expense of our planet, its finite resources and the rights of future generations to exist. In the name of "increasing women's role in peace and security", more women are militarized and sent to war zones, which is a distorted application of the UN Security Council resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. WILPF believes that the concepts of safety and security must shift so that they include the full enjoyment of all human rights for all, away from military and national security concepts.

Peace is more than the absence of war. On this International Day of Peace, WILPF calls for the peoples of the world to lay down their arms and raise their voices for peace and freedom, for there cannot be one without the other.

The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) is the oldest women's peace organization in the world, established in 1915 to oppose the war raging in Europe. It has been working ever since to study, make known, and abolish the causes of war, and to support human rights and general and complete disarmament.

Esteemed Treasurer, Honourable Mr Kevin Foley,

"pervers", "feral", "low-lifes", "anarchists" - Nazis used these kinds of words to justify the genocide they carried out against cultural minorities in European society.

Might I remind you that Adelaide in 2008 is not a fascist dictatorship! On the contrary, you are merely a democratically-elected functionary; member of State Parliament in a state that has long valued and upheld cultural diversity, and has postively encouraged creative expression AND dissent.

As citizens of South Australia, our right to protest and express our opinions is enshrined in law.

Furthermore, your use of such bombastic language does not become you. It detracts from your credibility. I would caution you against making further such ludicrous and oppressive statements about people whose opinions differ from yours.

We protesters are not afraid of you, or your bullying, strong-arm tactics. Do you stand outside the law, in which formal business contracts are legally binding?

I am not a feral lowlife anarchist. I respect the law. Your public denigration of my associates and me on 7/9/2008 is very poor form. Please apologise to us and mend your petulant ways.

Yours faithfully,
Melina Magdalena

I wrote to Adelaide Now but I don't think they published it.  They went for one supporting the Government.  Maybe they would have looked biased if they included a fourth letter supporting the move to end the Killing Fair.

Thanks for the nudge.  I'll send one to Rann.

Dear Mr Rann,

We write in reference to various public comments by your Deputy Premier and Treasurer, Mr Foley. While the grave implications of the substance of Mr Foley's statements are the subject of separate correspondence with you and members of your Ministry, we write now in particular concerning Mr Foley's language.

Over recent months, Mr Foley has demonstrated a pattern of immoderate public speech.  Indeed, it has become clear that Mr Foley is in the habit of using oppressive language.

We note, for instance, that Mr Foley was quoted on Wednesday 7th May 2008 in a number of media outlets as having spoken thus in reference to prisoners in our state's penal system:

"What we're making very clear is that if we've got to rack 'em, pack 'em and stack 'em, we will."

More recently, he has described peace activists, among whom we number ourselves, as "feral low-life" (Adelaide Now, September 7, 2008).

We can only presume from these of his public comments that Mr Foley believes that he may stand to gain some electoral advantage by portraying himself - and your Government - as "tough and macho". This is not the case. You will no doubt be aware that Mr Foley's comments are unwelcome to many women voters in SA, and, we suspect, to many men as well. In a changed electoral climate when the Northern Territory and West Australian Labor Governments have struggled in recent times to maintain their electoral advantage, we believe that Mr Foley has become a liability for SA Labor.

Of more concern to us, however, is the climate of intolerance and xenophobia which is fueled and cultivated in the community by such comments in the mouth of a person who holds a high office in the state government. This is especially the case when there is apparently no attempt within the government to moderate Mr Foley's style of language. Mr Foley's language is not simply flamboyant; it is speech of hatred and violence and, as such, is indefensible.

We therefore respectfully urge that Mr Foley be encouraged to undertake an appropriate anger management course and that he be counselled against the use of immoderate, oppressive and violent language.

Yours sincerely,

Cathy Picone

Dear Peace Singers,
I'm sorry to miss tomorrow's workshop. Hope it is a joy like the last. I'm suffering from a hacking cough which makes me sing an octave lower which is not such a bad thing, but I don't want to inflict the virus upon everyone.

ps I'll be in Parliament House on Wednesday listening to my daughter debate in her grand final. Does anyone have any choice messages they would like me to deliver to Mr Foley? I can think of some quite feral actions, but would never dream (of course) of actually carrying them out. I am a fine, upstanding citizen, though I must continue to maintain my preference for the grassroots over the lofty heights of elected representation. Interestingly, Mr Foley's children go or have gone to the same school as mine. Does that mean we are all low-lives?

Dear Adelaide peace singers,

Earlier this week, the South Australian branch of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) wrote to the South Australian Premier, Mike Rann concerning the oppressive language that his Treasurer and Deputy Premier, Kevin Foley, recently used against peace activists. A copy of the WILPF letter is appended below.

WILPF (SA) wishes to encourage members and supporters to write to Mr Rann in support of this letter-writing campaign.

With thanks,

Cathy

Hey all,

What a fantastic protest we had this morning in Adelaide! For the
very busy peak hour between about 8 and 9am, twenty (or so) of us
carried placards around the four sides of the most central pedestrian
crossing, right in the centre of the city. Our placards read:
"Ordinary people stopped the arms expo" and "SA says no defence
industry state" etc. etc. There was a great variety of words - which
had been painted last night on many placards by Irene and Kate and
Richard. Thanks!! And thanks to Craig and Jake for a great press
release - which got Jake at least two interviews, one with ABC TV and
one with Radio Adelaide.

We got lots of encouragement and thanks from pedestrians and
motorists. One bus driver was very, very welcoming and full of
smiles. Lots of people took our fliers - thanks to Jason for bringing
them back from Melbourne, and to Dimity and team for the graphic
design and printing - to Kate and Irene again for putting an updated
sticker on them announcing "peace activists win - arms expo
cancelled".

The idea for the moving protest came out of our meeting in Adelaide
yesterday afternoon - thanks, Ruth! With our team work, we made such
a friendly protest this morning that two young women passing by
joined us in the protest - and carried placards with us. Even a
policeman passing by said he supported us - except for some graffiti
he'd seen on some private property!

Dear Protest Singers

My guess is that the event would have been a public relations disaster for the SA government.    I wonder if they did their own polling that showed an unfavourable public response.

Ya gotta be proud of what public protest can achieve.

Hey, if it comes up again, lets aim for a choir of a thousand.  They'll need 2000 police for that.  :-)

Dear protest singers,

Although the arms expo has been cancelled, the singing protest
workshop will go ahead next Saturday 13th September in Adelaide as
scheduled. And, if you're able, you may like to join us in the moving
protest tomorrow morning, Monday 8th September, 8am to 9am. For that
hour, we will walk around the pedestrian crossing at the corner of
North Terrace and King William Street, Adelaide, holding placards.
Thanks to Kate and Irene and Richard for making the placards!

Ciao,

Cathy
