Subject: Congolese Oldies Reissues... Reissued!
africakabisa
Send Email Send Email

If you're a Radio Africa Kabisa listener, you know I have a penchant for classic Congolese music. I unabashedly adore the music of Franco, Docteur Nico, Grand Kalle, Tabu Ley Rochereau and others. Many African music aficionados consider the 1950s - 1970s to be the Golden Age of Congolese music. And I know from the calls I receive from listeners, that this music brings back a lot of memories for a lot of people.

In the early 1990s, the Sonodisc record label began flooding the market with CD reissues of classic recordings that had only been available on LP. (I was in the right place at the right time, as I worked as the world music buyer for a record store where I spent all of my meager earnings on these CDs.) Unfortunately, when Sonodisc dissolved several years ago, most of this music went out of print and became very difficult to find.

So I'm happy to inform all you nostalgie lovers that this music is now becoming available again! (See note below for complete info.)

WHERE TO BUY
For US-based customers, you can order directly from Stern's Music in NJ by emailing infonyc@... or calling 973-447-2481. Stern's is charging $14.73 per CD plus $4.00 to ship 1 to 4 CDs and another dollar for each additional 4. If you're outside the US, you can order from the London-based Stern's music website http://www.sternsmusic.com . You can find the complete track listings on the website.

You can also order from Alpha-Si at www.panafricanallstars.com in Atlanta, GA. They are an on-line African music store that carries a lot of good music both old and new. If you're in the Boston area, Benoit at Boutique Comme a Paris (662 Salem Street, Malden, 781-321-2766) can probably special order them for you.

FOR PREMIUM SERVICE, BE SURE TO MENTION THAT JULIA FROM AFRICA KABISA SENT YOU!

Here's the official word from Ken Braun at Stern's USA:
For all of you who have been bewailing the loss of the marvelous Merveilles du Passé series since Sonodisc collapsed two years ago, we have very good news. Our enterprising colleague Ibrahima Sylla has negotiated with the estate of the late great Congolese composer and bandleader Kallé Kabasele and directly with the still-active Tabu Ley Rochereau to reissue many of their classics under his Syllart label. The deal includes all of the surviving recordings of Kabasele's seminal band, Orchestre African Jazz, and those of his later project, African Team, plus Rochereau's entire catalogue. That means many good and great things, not least among them a prime selection of Dr. Nico's work with African Jazz and with the early 60s band, African Fiesta. It also means Rochereau's collaborations with Sam Mangwana, Mbilia Bel, Nyboma and, yes, Franco. So although Franco's heirs continue to squabble over his legacy, effectively keeping it off limits to all but vultures and pirates, and many of the recordings by other artists and bands represented in Merveilles du Passé remain unavailable for now, this new series is really something to celebrate. It includes much of the best Congolese music of the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s.

We're starting with 12 titles. By and large they are identical to Sonodisc's Merveilles du Passé CDs, though several contain one or two different tracks (most notably Rochereau & Nyboma's previously unavailable "Sacramento"). Regretably, Syllart's cover illustrations and liner notes are no improvement over Sonodisc's, and Syllart has not found better source recordings of some of the lo-fi material, but with music this important, we can't complain. Most of it sounds fine. There will be 12 more titles next month, and yet more later.

Subject: AFRICA KABISA: BEST OF 2006
africakabisa
Send Email Send Email

For the African music lover on your holiday shopping list, here are some recommendations for the best releases of 2006. If you're an Africa Kabisa listener, you're sure to have heard selections from these CDs featured many times on the program. I've included at the bottom of this message a list of sources for purchasing African music.

AFRICA KABISA'S BEST RELEASES OF 2006

Cheikh Lo (Senegal) -- Lamp Fall -- Nonesuch/World Circuit
Born in Burkina Faso, raised in Senegal, singer Cheikh Lo brilliantly combines mbalax, Cuban guajira, soukous, and Afro-Brazilian influences in this extraordinary and spiritual CD. The musical mix is so eclectic, there is something for everyone's liking. The icing on the cake is an inspired version of the Congolese classic "N'Galula".

Samba Mapangala (Kenya) -- Song and Dance -- Virunga
One of the sweetest voices in African music, Samba Mapangala delivers a knockout in Song and Dance. Samba has been on the scene since the 1970s, and has an extraordinary repertoire behind him, but this 2006 release is one of his finest. It's hard not to listen to every song on Song and Dance without experiencing pure joy. If you want to see the dance behind the song, check out the wonderful bootylicious video of "Nyama Choma" at http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoID=1399767946 .

Kekele (DRC) -- Kinavana -- Stern's
Kinshasa + Havana = Kinavana, and it all adds up very nicely on Congolese rumba stalwarts Kekele's third release. On Kinavana, Kekele take Cuban guajira-son classics (mostly from composer Guillermo Portabales) and reinterpret them with Lingala lyrics. Kekele's regular members include such ex-Les Quatre Etoiles greats as Nyboma, Syran M'Benza, Wuta Mayi; Kinavana features guest appearances by Madilu System, Mbilia Bel, and others.

Africando (Senegal) -- Ketakuba --- Stern's
Africando sound closer to Puerto Rico than Cuba these days, but hey, they still know how to do salsa right. Highlights include a salsa version of Franco's "Mario," sung by Madilu.

Toumani Diabate's Symmetric Orchestra (Mali) -- Boulevard de l'Independence -- Nonesuch/World Circuit
The Symmetric Orchestra is an audacious concept but kora genius Toumani Diabate pulls it off with amazing creativity and flair. This West African big band seamlessly fuses the traditional and modern, ranging from Mande folklore to Senegalese salsa.  (Toumani Diabate's Symmetric Orchestra will be appearing 3/29 at the Somerville Theatre.)

Salif Keita (Mali) -- M'Bemba -- Decca/Universal
A phenomenal new release from Salif Keita. (Salif Keita will be appearing 4/21 at the Somerville Theatre.)

Big Joe (Sierra Leone) -- Hold Me Tight -- H&R Music
"Shake U Bam Bam" -- from this CD -- has been heavy on the Africa Kabisa playlist all year. This ultimate party song combines motifs from "Azda" to "Hot Hot Hot".

Oliver Ngoma (Gabon) -- Saga -- Lusafrica
Afrozouk maestro Ngoma returns with a new release.

Refugee All Stars (Sierra Leone) -- Living Like a Refugee -- Anti
The backstory of this band is more interesting than the CD, but understanding what the band went through to produce this release makes the music that much more inspiring. Musically, a nice mix of goombay and reggae with positive and powerful lyrics. (The documentary film about the Refugee All Stars will have several screenings at the Museum of Fine Arts this month.)

Pierre Akendengue (Gabon) -- Goree -- Lusafrica
A thoughtful concept album with songs exploring the painful legacy of Goree's slave-trading history. Akendengue is one of the great intellectuals of African music.

BEST REISSUES & COMPILATIONS

Golden Afrique Vol. 2 (DRC) -- Network
Highly recommended! (as is Vol. 1) A great introduction to some of the most famous tracks from the golden age of Congolese music. This 2-CD set is an essential collection for Congolese music lovers. (Tracks include "Cooperation," "Double Double," "Aon Aon" and many more.) Expensive but worth it.

Les Mangalepa (Kenya) -- Retroafric
Great 1970s East African rumba.

Rochereau (DRC) and Gran Kalle (DRC) -- Syllart
The 1950s-1970s catalogs of Tabu Ley Rochereau and Gran Kalle & African Jazz are now back in print and available through Stern's Music.

African Decale (Cote d'Ivoire) -- Available through Pan-African All Stars
Coupe decale is still ruling the African nightclubs but, astonishingly, it's very difficult to find collections to purchase. African Decale has a lot of great tracks.

Rough Guide to West African Gold (Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Sierra Leone) -- World Music Network
Includes classics such as Bembeya Jazz's "Whiskey Soda" and Super Sweet Talks' "The Lord's Prayer" as well as more obscure tracks.

WHERE TO BUY AFRICAN MUSIC IN THE U.S.A.

I personally get much of my music from Pan African All Stars (Alpha-Si), Simba Music (Joe), and Stern's (Ken). If you call these guys, tell them Julia from Africa Kabisa sent you.

Pan African All Stars (in Atlanta, Georgia) and Simba Music (in Takoma Park, MD) are the best African music retailers in the country. They have excellent stock and provide first-rate customer service.  Please support them!  They should have most of the CDs on this list, and also carry DVDs. You can also order the Stern's, Lusafrica, Retroafric, and Syllart titles directly from Stern's Music.

Pan African All Stars (www.panafricanallstars.com) -- order on-line or call 404-684-9955. Ask for Alpha-Si.
Simba Music -- call 301-445-1670. Ask for Joe.
Stern's Music -- infonyc@... or call 973-447-2481.

You can also find some African music at www.amazon.com , www.cdbaby.com, and other on-line sources. If you prefer downloaded tracks to physical CDs, www.calabashmusic.com has a good selection.

Black Gold
Thu, Jan 18, 8:30 pm MFA -- BOSTON
Black Gold by Nick Francis and Marc Francis (UK, 2006, 78 min.). Multinational coffee companies dominate an industry worth over $80 billion, but while we buy our lattes and cappuccinos, the price paid to coffee farmers remains so low that many have been forced to abandon their fields. Nowhere is this paradox more evident than in Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee. Tadesse Meskela is on a one-man mission to save his coffee cooperative's 75,000 farmers from bankruptcy. Against the backdrop of Tadesse's journey to London and Seattle searching for buyers willing to pay a fair price, the more powerful sides of the international trading system come into focus. New York coffee traders, auction houses, and the double dealings of trade ministers at the World Trade Organization reveal the enormity of Tadesse's task to find a long-term solution for his farmers. In Amharic, Oromiffa, and English with English subtitles.

Conversations on a Sunday Afternoon
Sat, Jan 21, 10:30 am MFA -- BOSTON
Conversations on a Sunday Afternoon by Khalo Matabane (South Africa, 2005, 80 min.). An artful blend of documentary and dramatic elements, Conversations on a Sunday Afternoon breaks with the South African tradition of hard-hitting historical dramas and charges into the world of ideas. In a Johannesburg park, Keniloe (Tony Kgoroge) meets Fatima (Fatima Hersi), a Somali woman seeking refuge in South Africa. Shaken by her story, Keniloe later looks for her in the city's migrant neighborhoods, but his quest soon takes on a life of its own as he asks further questions of the people he meets. Why did you leave Kenya? Can you ever go home to Congo? The struggle for reconciliation is nudged aside to reveal a country coming to terms with its new status as a promised land. What does a richer African nation owe to its poorer neighbors? How does political crisis shape personal identity? And is the war over now? In English, French, Zulu, and Swahili with English subtitles

The Refugee All Stars
Sat, Jan 21, 8:20 pm PEM -- SALEM
The Refugee All Stars by Zach Niles and Banker White (2005, 78 min.). For 3 years, 2 filmmakers from San Francisco followed a group of Sierra Leonian refugees as they turned to music in the face of severe adversity: murder, exile, and psychological trauma. "Easily the film's most powerful segment shows the conflicting emotions registering on the faces of the musicians during their homecoming, as they ride through the devastated streets of Freetown. The scene overshadows the film's upbeat ending in which the band goes into a recording studio to make a successful album" (The Globe and Mail)

Rain in a Dry Land
Sun, Jan 22, 1 pm PEM -- SALEM
Rain in a Dry Land by Anne Makepeace (USA/Kenya, 2006, 83 min) In 2004, 13,000 Somali Bantu refugees realized their dream of coming to America. They now live in 50 cities across the country and are part of the largest group from a single African community to settle in the United States at one time. Rain in a Dry Land chronicles two years in the lives of two extended families as they leave a 200-year legacy of oppression in Africa to face new challenges in a new land. Both of these war-torn families find ways to survive and create a safe haven in America. In English, Mai Mai and Somali with English subtitles
