Here are May African events, plus some announcements on new club openings (hopefully, the way things change around here, they have not already become new club closings...)

MAY

We hope to have Evans, the Creole Fusion promoter, join us on 5/4 on Africa Kabisa to spin some new zouk.

This unusual ensemble is one of the few guardians of rural Xhosa culture, maintaining the survival of indigenous South African traditions. Presented by www.worldmusic.org

Subject: OBAIN ATTOUOMAN DEPORTED
africakabisa
Send Email Send Email

May 24, 2008

Dear Friends

You may have heard the news that Obain Attouoman was deported to the Ivory Coast on Wednesday May 21. In addition to his dedicated work as an outstanding Math and Special Education public school teacher at Fenway High School in Boston, "DJ Obain" has been running Club Waffu since the mid-1990s.

Obain's legal problems stemmed from misreading and missing a date for a hearing during his initial immigration petition in the 1990s. (He has never been accused of any criminal misconduct.) He was nearly deported back in 2005, but was saved by the efforts of his students, school colleagues, city and state officials, and many friends.  At that time, Senator John Kerry and Rep. Ed Markey filed legislation requesting that Obain be granted permanent residency in the US. Unfortunately, given the climate of immigration politics, those bills were not voted on and the protection that they afforded Obain expired in March 2007. Since then, he has been living in legal limbo knowing he could be deported at any moment. On Tuesday, during his monthly visit to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office, he was detained without notice and authorities, (probably in an effort to avoid the enormous publicity and outcry that accompanied their actions in 2005), moved for immediate deportation.

Fenway High School has been unwavering in their support of Obain. He is a highly gifted and skilled teacher, with several Master's degrees, and the school department wants to retain him if at all possible. They are working with legal counsel to determine the next routes of action. In the meantime, the school has established the FENWAY HIGH SCHOOL OBAIN CAMPAIGN to provide financial assistance for Obain in the Ivory Coast, and to help the school campaign for his return.

You can make a tax-deductible online donation HERE:

On a personal note, I began my Africa Kabisa radio program in 1992, the same year that Obain arrived in the United States. I met Obain not long after his arrival and he soon became a valuable advisor and contributor to the program, as well as a frequent guest. Obain has been such a significant presence in promoting African culture and music in the Boston area. His Club Waffu series has provided African music lovers with the opportunity to see performers who would have never otherwise come to Boston. Club Waffu nights have also provided a regular dose of African ambiance, and a home away from home, for African expatriates living in the Boston area as well as others interested in experiencing African culture.

For Boston's African music community, Obain is like a beloved brother and his deportation feels like a family member has been ripped from us. For 16 years, he has been so tightly woven into the fabric of our community, it is difficult to conceive of his not being here or the void that his absence will create. I have spoken to Obain since his return to Abidjan and have told him that we are all praying for him.

Obain will be speaking with us by phone on Africa Kabisa on Sunday June 1. Tune in. We will keep you updated as to further information, and you can also check for information updates at www.fenwayhs.org . You are also encouraged to contact your senators and representatives to urge them to advocate for Obain. Obain's saga truly illustrates the absurdity of current US immigration policy but, as many of us are all too unfortunately aware, his case is not exceptional.

Subject: BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC ESTABLISHES AFRICA SCHOLARS PROGRAM
africakabisa
Send Email Send Email

Berklee College of Music, the world-renowned music school based in Boston, has announced the establishment of the Africa Scholars fund to provide full four-year scholarships to talented musicians from the Continent. The first auditions will be held in June. Please pass this info along to young musicians you may know in Africa. This is a wonderful opportunity (as long as Berklee doesn't train them to go all fusion jazz on us!)

Berklee to Audition and Interview African Students
In Accra, Ghana, and Durban, South Africa, in June
For Unique Scholarship Opportunities

Boston, MA, May 23, 2008.  Berklee College of Music, the world's leading institution for the study of contemporary music, announces the creation of the Africa Scholars Program.  The college will be holding audition and interview (A&I) events offering talented musicians the chance to be awarded scholarships to attend the college.  Auditions, open to citizens of any African nation, will be conducted for the first time in Accra, Ghana, on June 15 and 16, and Durban, South Africa, on June 18 and 19.  For more information or to apply, please visit berklee.edu/scholarships/africa/.

The Africa Scholars Program is designed to create opportunities for gifted African musicians who lack the financial means to study at Berklee.  The program is also intended to enhance Berklee's presence in Africa, and increase awareness of Berklee among African musicians, including holding more auditions there.  The college has previously visited Mozambique and Kenya, and plans to return to Africa next year.  While other colleges have study abroad programs for American students, it is very uncommon for American colleges to recruit in other countries – particularly in Africa.

The Africa Scholar, to be admitted to the college in 2009, will be awarded a four-year, full-ride scholarship.  African candidates who audition at A&I events in other cities will also be considered for this award.  At the same time, musicians who audition in Accra and Durban in June will be considered for a host of other scholarships that Berklee awards annually as part of its World Scholarship Tour, where the college visits more than 40 international cities seeking musicians.

Berklee President Roger H. Brown and his wife Linda Mason, who have extensive experience living and working in Africa, established and funded the Africa Scholars Program in thanks to the kindness and intelligence of the many people they came to know while working in Africa, particularly mentors Francis Lutomia, headmaster of the school in Kenya where Brown taught, and Hasaan Gibreel, with whom Brown and Mason collaborated while leading humanitarian organization Save The Children in Sudan.

While Brown and Mason were the catalysts for the program's creation, its implementation is a collaborative initiative extending not only across different departments at the college, but also beyond Berklee's walls.  In an effort to make this program open to as many musicians as possible, Berklee has brought together a group of world-renowned artists and music professionals, that includes several alumni, to advise the college and help identify candidates for the auditions.  The advisory board is comprised of Mulatu Astake '59 (the first African student to attend the college), Richard Bona, Darius Brubeck, Angelique Kidjo, Bakithi Kumalo, Lionel Loueke `00, Leni Stern `80, Stewart Sukuma `99, and Eric Wainaina `02.

Joe Galeota is an associate professor of percussion who has led an exchange program for Berklee students to study in Ghana for the past 11 summers.  He's also helping to spread the word, and will be on-hand in Ghana to assist with the auditions.  Says Galeota, " I know a lot of musicians in Accra and they're excited to spread it around to their potential candidates."

Ron Savage, chair of the Ensembles Department, and Carolyn Wilkins, professor of ensembles, will be leading the auditions at both sites, keeping in mind that they'll be seeing musicians with varied levels of playing experience.  Says Wilkins, who has 19 years of experience auditioning students, "One of the things that Berklee does best is to evaluate raw talent.  Many of our current students have come to us with unorthodox musical training.  Quite a few of our students are self-taught." Other important factors taken into account are the student's work ethic, intelligence, and flexibility, which Wilkins sees as key elements for success, especially for students coming to Berklee from so far away.

Musicians come to Berklee from every corner of the earth, making the college uniquely international.  While over 20 percent of the college's students are from outside the U.S. - among the largest percentages of all U.S. colleges and universities - representing more than 70 countries, the Africa Scholars Program is part of a larger effort to increase the number of students from under-represented areas of the world, including Africa, China, India, and Cuba, fostering a significant cultural exchange.

Says Wilkins,  "I have no doubt that bringing more students from Africa and Asia will be beneficial.  Many of these students come from situations that Americans cannot even imagine. The fact that they have made such tremendous personal sacrifices just to be here has been humbling and inspiring.  The opportunity to work with them towards our common goal of musical excellence will be a wonderful learning opportunity for everyone involved."

Berklee College of Music was founded on the revolutionary principle that the best way to prepare students for careers in music was through the study and practice of contemporary music. For over 60 years, the college has evolved constantly to reflect the state of the art of music and the music business. With over a dozen performance and nonperformance majors, a diverse and talented student body representing over 70 countries, and a music industry "who's who" of alumni, Berklee is the world's premier learning lab for the music of today — and tomorrow.

SUN 8/24 -- AFRICA KABISA INTERVIEW! -- Matthew Lavoie -- Voice of America's Music Time in Africa
Founded 40 years ago by Leo Sarkisian, Music Time in Africa is the VOA's longest-running music program. In 2004, ethnomusicologist Matthew Lavoie took over the helm and has been busy going through the treasure trove of music in the show's vaults. In addition to hosting several VOA African music radio programs, Matthew has created the outstanding African Music Treasures blog showcasing African music rarities from all over the continent: http://www.voanews.com/english/africa/blog/ .
I flipped when I heard the amazing 1960s unreleased tracks he had from the Heartbeats of Sierra Leone (Geraldo Pino's early group). Matthew has been kind enough to send me several other tracks from the Heartbeats that were not featured on his blog. None of this music is commercially available, so tune in to this Africa Kabisa exclusive to hear it and to hear Matthew talk about more of the treasures from the vault and the stories behind them.

africakabisa
Send Email Send Email

Veteran Cameroonian journalist, ADAMU MUSA, will be a special guest this Sunday 9/28 on Africa Kabisa starting at 4pm. The topic of discussion will be the impact and implications of China's surging presence in Africa. If you're in the Boston area, tune in at 88.1FM or listen from wherever you are to our live webcast stream at http://www.wmbr.org .

We'll be speaking with Adamu at the start of the show. As this is such an enormous, and enormously important subject, we will only be able to scratch the surface before moving on to our regular music programming. But we hope that Adamu will be joining us in coming months for future explorations of Sino-Africa relations. We welcome hearing his insights and perspectives on this and other critical matters.

Adamu Musa has worked for decades with Cameroon Radio and Television (CRTV) where he is editorial director, political analyst, and commentator, as well as prime time TV news anchor. He has held many other positions at CRTV, including editor-in-chief, news magazines and features, and senior reporter/presidential correspondent. Since 1984, he has also been a foreign correspondent and stringer for the BBC, Voice of America, and Voice of Germany. From 2004 to 2006, he served as communications officer in the World Bank's Cameroon/Central Africa Country Office; he has also been a consultant to the World Bank. He is currently a Fellow at Harvard University's Weatherhead Center for International Affairs where he is researching the Chinese equation in the new superpower scramble for Africa.

Samba Mapangala's song "Obama Ubarikiwe" (Obama Be Blessed) seems to be a hit on Africa Kabisa! When I played it last Sunday, the phones went wild with listeners wanting to know where they can get the song.

So, here you go. You can download it FOR FREE at:

The Kiswahili lyrics say:
"Obama, leadership is a gift from God, and you have it. Please help to bring peace, change and hope to all Americans and all the world. We love you!"

Many thanks to Samba Mapangala and Orchestra Virunga, one of my very favorite East African bands. While you're visiting the website, (which sometimes seems to take several minutes to load, so be patient), also check out Samba's other fine songs and videos.

Also, Kenya's Kenge Kenge has recorded a very nice Barack Obama song, "Obama for Change," which is available (for 99 cents) at itunes. (Search for "Kenge Kenge".) Here's a link to its wonderful music video:

This will be a live show with full band -- no playback!

Jean Bedel Mpiana, better known as JB Mpiana, is a renowned Congolese singer and songwriter, who is credited as originator of the ndombolo dance style. Mpiana founded Wenge Musica in 1981, along with Werrason, Alain Makaba, Didier Masella and others. Because of his incredible voice, Mpiana was immediately appointed lead singer and president of the group. Award-winning albums included Mulolo, where he composed 3 of the 4 songs featured in the album, Kin e Bouge and Pentagone .

In 1997 while still with Wenge Musica, he released a solo album called " Feux de L'amour." popularly known as "Ndombolo," which won him a gold disc. This created issues among the band members and eventually caused the group to split. JB Mpiana then went on with most of the group members to form his own group called Wenge BCBG.

JB has performed in popular halls such as Zenith, Bercy and Olympia in Paris, filling them to capacity. The culmination of this success was his performance at the Martyr's Stadium in Kinshasa in 2001, where the group attracted over 200,000 spectators, setting a record for Congolese music.

Sunday November 9 is WMBR Fundraiser day on Africa Kabisa. We will begin the show with some reflections on the momentously historic event of this past week.

In the first half hour, from 4 - 4:30pm, we look forward to hearing perspectives from several illustrious guests on the significance for Africa of Barack Obama's election. We will be joined in the studio by:
ADAMU MUSA (Journalist, Cameroon Radio & Television; Harvard Weatherhead Center Research Fellow)
ALEXIS RWABIZAMBUGA (Rwanda; Harvard Weatherhead Center and London School of Economics Research Fellow)
OUSMANE SENE (Senegal; Director, West African Research Center).

From 4:30 - 6pm, we continue with our regular mix of African music, plus our one-day-per-year begging for donations. Make a pledge for Africa Kabisa by calling 617-253-8810 any time from 4 - 6pm EST on November 9.

You can also view premiums and pledge on-line at www.wmbr.org until November 19. For on-line pledges, be sure to scroll to Africa Kabisa when you make your show selection. And, please write a few comments on why you are supporting the program!

Your donations help support our all-volunteer radio station WMBR 88.1fm, Cambridge, MA. We recognize that the current uncertain economic times are placing great strain on everyone. (And, you probably need that money more than WMBR.) If you can afford to make a nominal donation that is within your budget, we sincerely appreciate it. Personally, what matters most to me is the number of people who pledge, not the total dollar amount. Everyone who makes a pledge, regardless of amount, will receive a CD sampler of some of Africa Kabisa's favorite and most requested songs.

Thank you for your support of Africa Kabisa!

Also, please tune in Sunday 11/16 when Father Vincent K. Machozi joins us for an analysis and discussion of the conflict in the Eastern Congo.

Dear Africa Kabisa Listeners

On March 29, 2009 my radio colleague and very dear friend, Eugene Godfried, passed away. Eugene made several interview appearances via phone on Africa Kabisa. He shared with us his knowledge and perspectives on music from Cuba, Guadeloupe, Haiti, and his home country of Curaçao, delineating the unbreakable connections between Africa and the Caribbean. He gave us in-depth analyses of the songs of Cuban greats Arsenio Rodgriuez, Beny More, and Conjunto Chappotin. And, most recently in January, he spoke about President Obama's inauguration and the implications for changes in American policy towards Cuba.

Eugene had the most brilliant multidisciplinary mind and vibrant soul of anyone I have ever known, and he was undeniably the funniest person I have ever encountered. He was a true inspiration for me in many ways. He was very proud of my work with Africa Kabisa, and my deep love for African and Caribbean music. My Sunday ritual after returning home from the radio station was to pick up the phone to call him (no matter what country he was in) and discuss with him that day's program, the songs I selected, and the guests interviewed. I also helped him create his own online radio station, Radio Eugene Godfried International (REGI Radio).

I encourage you to visit www.afrocubaweb.com to learn more about Eugene and to read his essays. You can also read there many testimonials to Eugene, including mine. To get a flavor of his personality in action, watch his videos at www.regiradio.org. In addition, broadcasting legend Von Martin, from WPFW's Caribbeana program, devoted last Saturday's broadcast to Eugene with excerpts of his on-air interviews and reminiscenses from friends and family. Von's broadcast is available for download at www.caribbeana.org .

I connected with Eugene through music, and I hope at some point to pay tribute to him by featuring some of his favorite songs. In the meantime, here is an obituary that describes some of the many professional roles and complex interests of this extraordinary man.

Eugène Edward Godfried
10/23/1952 - 3/29/2009
Caribbean Specialist, Radio Journalist, Community Organizer, Musicologist
Director, Radio Eugene Godfried International
Director, Caribbean Division, Radio Havana Cuba

Eugène Edward Godfried Presilia passed on to the ancestors Sunday morning, March 29, 2009, in Willemstad, Curaçao, his homeland, after suffering a grave stroke March 21st. He was 56.

Eugène Godfried was a widely respected and renowned radio journalist, scholar, community organizer, political activist, and ethnomusicologist. For over 30 years, he worked with Caribbean nations to promote ideas and actions regarding popular culture and Caribbean identity. He dedicated his life to researching, articulating, and interpreting cultures of the Caribbean and to fostering Afro-Caribbean pride, and was especially recognized for his expertise on Afro-Cuban music, history, and culture. As a political activist, he fought against colonialism, racism, exploitation, and oppression.

Eugene Godfried's life and work were of deep importance and impact to the Caribbean region. As James Millete, Professor of African American Studies at Oberlin College, notes:

"The death of Eugene Godfried has closed an important chapter in the political life of the Caribbean in general and the Dutch Caribbean in particular. For more than thirty years the name and the activities of Eugene Godfried had to be reckoned with in the region. As activist, as radical politician, as radio journalist, as researcher and propagandist Eugene articulated a constant message of challenge and change, of hope and transformation, from one end of the Caribbean to the other.

But as militant and radical as he was, Eugene was also very human, very cultured, very sophisticated. He was the quintessential Caribbean man. He was fluent in nearly all the languages of the region - from Papiamentu to Patois to Kreyol to Sranang to French and English and Spanish and Dutch and Portuguese, to name only a few - and willingly interpreted the various cultures in language and in meaning to each other and to all those seriously interested in knowing the real Caribbean."

Highly learned, but also a man of the people, Eugene Godfried used his role as a radio personality to foster open discussion among a socially diverse listening audience. For Mr. Godfried, broadcasting was a methodology for promoting active dialogue among all social sectors, and a strategic way to defend popular Caribbean identity. His radio programs incorporated not only music, but discussions of a wide scope spiced with Caribbean cultural ingredients. His international interview guests ranged from all strata of society, from the highest political echelons to the voices of common people conveying their lived experiences.

Just as Eugene Godfried viewed the Caribbean as an integrated region, he integrated broadcast journalism with elements of numerous other disciplines including social psychology, cultural anthropology, linguistics, philosophy, political science, economics, agronomy, religion, social geography, history, sociology, musicology, and ethnography. Similarly, he integrated his experience as a community organizer with that of radio journalist, heading directly to both urban and rural areas to conduct fieldwork and record oral history for his scholarly research.

Born in the Caribbean nation of Curaçao in the Dutch Antilles in 1952, Eugene Godfried began his education in Catholic primary schools of his homeland and took his higher degrees in Holland in social services with an emphasis on culture and community organizing. In the 1970s, he became professionally involved with radio, initially in Curaçao. His political mentor, Dr. Cheddi Jagan, who had served as Chief Minister of Guyana and would later become its President, personally encouraged Mr. Godfried to conduct progressive interviews on radio and television. Jagan, who Mr. Godfried deeply respected as a Marxist-Leninist thinker, was also instrumental in bringing Mr. Godfried to the attention of the Cuban government, who asked him to delve into matters of Afro-Cuban culture, music, and politics.

Eugene Godfried first visited Cuba and participated in its radio broadcasts in the 1970s. He also traveled and broadcasted extensively in numerous other Caribbean and Latin American countries. In the 1980s, following political persecution by the governmental regime in Curacao, he decided to establish himself in Cuba. He quickly became a leading voice, and conscience for Afro-Cuban identity, in Cuban broadcasting, where he worked for several decades. His professional work on Cuban radio stations included Radio Taino, Radio Progreso, (where he directed Caribbean programming and collaborated closely with Eduardo Rosillo Heredia), Radio Rebelde, and Radio CMKS-Guantanamo, among others. Since 1995, he directed the Caribbean Desk of Radio Habana Cuba International as a Caribbean Specialist. A talented linguist, Eugene was fluent in thirteen languages. His main broadcast languages included English, Spanish, Papiamentu, French, and Kreyol.

Mr. Godfried first made an appearance on Eduardo Rosillo's Radio Progreso program, "Un Domingo Con Rosillo" in 1993. He and Mr. Rosillo became increasingly concerned with the "de-Africanization" of Cuban popular music, and the urgent need for survival of the Cuban son rhythm complex, which they viewed as the most authentic representation of Cuban cultural identity. Mr. Godfried feared that the destruction of this musical form would imply a denial of the African component of Cuban society in shaping Cuban national identity.

Through his involvement with Cuban radio stations, Eugene Godfried actively promoted and celebrated the son complex and other aspects of Afro-Cuban identity. (Similarly, Mr. Godfried would strive to restore respect for the African-originated tumba rhythm of Curaçao.) He also researched deeply and spoke openly about the political history of Afro-Cubans, including the 1912 massacre of members of the Partido Independiente de Color (the Independent Colored People's Party). Although a member of the Cuban Communist Party, Mr. Godfried did not shy from openly criticizing racism within the country. His criticism was accepted at the highest levels, though naturally he made a few unhappy.

Mr. Godfried was also a specialist on celebrations of Carnival as expressed in Caribbean and Latin American nations. He participated in the 1998 world conference on carnival held in Hartford, Connecticut. He was a producer and promoter for the longstanding Cuban group Conjunto Chappottín y sus Estrellas, who were vital to perfecting and popularizing the son complex. Mr. Godfried was responsible for the designation of the group as a National Treasure of the Cuban people. As producer and promoter of the Conjunto throughout the Caribbean, Eugene Godfried was committed to insuring that audiences of the world understand Son as an authentic Cuban cultural creation.

Mr. Godfried was a visiting scholar and guest lecturer at numerous American universities from 1999 - 2007. His lecture topics included issues of race and identity in the Caribbean, as well as popular culture, history, politics, and journalism. His research examined the connections between Africa and the Caribbean, (as well as the world), from anthropological, linguistic, cultural, religious, political, and economic perspectives. Mr. Godfried's paper, "Reflections on Race and the Status of People of African Descent in Revolutionary Cuba" was presented in 2007 at the Caribbean Studies Association conference in Bahia, Brasil. He was also deeply interested in the US African American community and its civil rights movement. In addition, he was directly responsible for organizing the recognition and celebration of the first rebellion in 1795 of enslaved Africans in Curaçao.

Never one to stay idle, despite ill health, he mastered the art of self broadcasting and set up his own Internet radio, Radio Eugene Godfried International, www.regiradio.org, in 2006. (Notable interviews included a lively conversation with Noam Chomsky.) He also produced many videos on topics of Caribbean identity, culture, music, and history, which can be found at that website. The word "International" was an integral component of his broadcasting service, as Eugene Godfried considered himself a truly international man. His deep humanity and open heart respected, accepted, and embraced people and cultures from around the world.

Earlier in his professional life, Mr. Godfried served a four-year term as president of the farmers' cooperative of Curaçao. He returned to Curacao at the end of 2007, and to this political mission in the last year of his life, when in recent months he diligently promoted agrarian reform as the Coordinator of the Plataforma Agrario Nashonal (PAN). Throughout his life, he worked as an organizer with local communities and labor unions in numerous Caribbean nations.

He is survived by two daughters in Curaçao, Yomini and Nohraya Godfried, a daughter in Oriente, Krisjocelyn Godfried , as well as his aunt Crisma Merien-Presilia in Curaçao who raised him, his father Alwin Godfried, his sisters Alwina and Nathaly, his brothers Egbert, Alwin Jr., and Nathaniel, and his cousins, including Rutger Merien. Funeral services were held Saturday April 4, 2009 at the Church of Steenrijk in Willemstad, Curacao and were attended by over 500 people from around the Caribbean and the world, including political dignitaries from Curaçao, Saint Vincent, and Guyana. He was interred at Janwe Cemetery.

He will be missed sorely, as now is the time when the issues he confronted in such a deep way are coming to the fore and his was an understanding born of hard-earned time in Cuba and elsewhere with people at every level of society.
