GUAGUANCO, The Rumba Musical Copyright 1999
A Neri Torres' and IFE-ILE production
Description:
Guaguanco Oyelo Bien is a musical production that pays tribute to
the history of Afro-Cuban music while pointing the spotlight on the
popular Cuban Rumba with a casting of 9 dancers, 2 actors and 7
musicians.
The show traces the African rhythms that give birth to the Rumba
back to the end of the 19th century when it was born on the docks of
Havana, Cuba. The story speaks about the evolution of this music
style and also the way it has contributed to today's Latin musical
flavor.
From a contemporary perspective the piece bounds the traditional
with the avant-garde, the authentic with the commercial. The concept
is to tell the story of the people who created the authentic Rumba.
With a whole lotta rhythm dance, music and even audience
interaction, Guaguanco presents a tableau of different events and
places later on important in Cuban culture: The Market Place, The
Docks, etc. The script shows the transcendence of Rumba from the
Spanish colonial times to Havana "Solares" (ghettos) up to a Miami
Beach jam celebration.
Script: Neri Torres / Natividad Torres
Choreography, Producer: Neri Torres
