Thanks very much, Rob! I'd planned to recap the show - but, you've
done it better than I could, AND with a link to the program archive.
A couple of comments - hearing the original 1984 Leonard Cohen
version clarified in my mind something that's always confused me.
The first released recording contains quite different lyrics to the
version Allison performs. Cohen's studio recording contains
the "Lord of Song" references etc. In the years following, John Cale
picked out the verses about ("somebody who outdrew you") that Jeff
Buckley would later adopt. Rufus Wainright, Allison and most artists
today perform some variation of the Cale-chosen lyrics, and the
original Cohen version is rarely heard.
As noted during the program, the visionaries at Cohen's record label
did not choose to release the album containing Hallelujah in America
(for some years). Nuff said.
It's fun to be reminded of that Allison's Secrets CD and press
release (aka "one sheet") in your radio library. In those days,
Festival Distribution was sending out the CDs (and that was Alley's
singer-songwriter, full-length, debut). Just this Summer, Festival
folded its tent and stopped distributing - a clear sign of the times
as digital downloads become the standard. One of the big attractions
for us to Festival, years back, was they distributed Ani DiFranco's
CDs in Canada. Ani and her manager, Scot Fisher, were then, and are,
even more today, our model as to how to survive in the music
industry - while remaining human.
Be sure to check out the program - for the Allison content, and, to
hear Newfoundland compatriots Ian Foster (from St. John's, NL) and
The Lever Pulled (from Alley's home of Corner Brook, NL).
Rock and roll from "the rock" ( :
Happy holidays to all celebrating this weekend in Canada - and Happy
Sunday around the world!!
And, yes, the plan is for Allison to return to Toronto's Heliconian
Hall for a "Tidings" show on Friday, November 28, 2008!
'best, Adrian
