Played some of Allison's Tidings CD tonight. Mentioned the upcoming
concerts, looks like I'll be stuck in Kingston for both shows. Long
story. :)
But I did play part of the BBC Documentary on Hallelujah, so for those
who want to hear it you can listen to it.

Few minutes into it is when I start playing Allison's stuff.
Rob
Happy Birthday to Allison and James!
I'll be resting on my birthday on Tuesday. Worked a long day Saturday
and going to Great Big Sea concert Monday Night.
Saw Bob Dylan during his sound check on Saturday. Was in town doing a
concert and I was at the arena setting up chairs and other things.
Couldn't see his face since he was wearing a sweatshirt with a hoodie.
Had his back to us, but it was him. Don't think of Bob being a
hoodie guy. lol.
Some puffs of smoke coming from Bob as he walked around stage with his
guitar. What type of smoke? We'll have to guess. :)
After that I grabbed a bite to eat then off to the radio station.
Filling in on a blues show and working on Queen's hockey. They lost
again. About a 10 hour day altogether.
Here was part of the radio show from Friday. An hour of Great Big
Sea, crammed 17 songs in it.

Thanks for the birthday wishes. Off to bed. Yawn.

Yes, indeed, the auction for the Kidney Foundation, despite a late
start, rolled along nicely, and Alley's painting is now on its way
to Paris, France where it will hang in a private exhibition ( :
I enjoyed your journal/podcast, Rob!
Particularly since I've been unplugged for such a stretch, hearing
each progressive day enabled me to catch up with the world!
And, thanks for the tinyurl link - I'll have to learn how to that

Yahoo sometimes doesn't like long links, so I'll pass along that one
for Allison's painting, in a TinyURL link. These work well. Just go
to TinyUrl.com and you enter a link and gives you a short one that
points to the exact same place. Really helpful in blog posts or even
emails.

Runs out 9am Sunday morning so by time you read this it might be too
late for people to get it. Oops. But right now her painting is going
for more than some items I saw in a Toronto Maple Leafs auction

Too bad about the internet problems. I went to that BBC Radio link

A mumbo jumbo podcast sounds like great fun for this wet, dark,
weekend on the west coast of Canada.
Why DO most of us turn clocks ahead in Spring and back an hour in
Fall - when the province of Saskatchewan does not?
The link to the BBC Radio 2 documentary on "Hallelujah" broke last
time I posted it. Let's try again:

I'm still in major catch-up mode, but, finally having internet
working, I can get there. I apologize to all who are awaiting
responses to emails. I am working on it!!

(should my email not reach you, here's the latest news on a pair of
tributes to Leonard Cohen and his music to which Allison's recently
contributed)
BBC Radio 2, which broadcast its terrific documentary on the
song "Hallelujah" a few days back, makes this program available
online for the next week. Just click on
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00f928x/The_Fourth_The_Fifth_Th
e_Minor_Fall to enjoy "The Fourth, The Fifth, The Minor Fall"'s
exploration of the many facets of this Leonard Cohen creation. As
BBC host Guy Garvey sums things up, Cohen has "brought a beautiful
song into this world and 'let her go' ". Alongside Allison Crowe,
contributors include Helen Walford, Kathryn Williams, John Lissauer,
Andy Wallace, Imogen Heap, Alex Patsavas, The Bishop of Croydon,
Brandi Carlile, Jim Devlin, Christine Collister and John Walsh
(Starsailor).
Dedicated Cohen blogger 1 Heck of a Guy, advises: "Warning:
Listening to this sampling of artists, critics, and other
commentators talk about their perspectives on Hallelujah may put
ones preconceived notions about the song at risk."
MOJO magazine's tribute, in print and on CD, to Leonard Cohen is now
on sale in the UK, and reaching points across Europe, America and
the world, in the days ahead. The December '08 issue of MOJO
celebrates "deep and moving music, the kind of stuff we need in the
run up to the holiday period" with a tribute CD to Leonard Cohen.
Explains MOJO: "Straddling the world of literature and music, his
talent as a deeply personal wordsmith allows his music to remain
open to endless interpretation and accounts for the 3000-plus cover
versions of of his material that have been recorded to date. Fifteen
of the finest of these have been
hand-picked for inclusion here on this exclusive MOJO tribute to a
truly remarkable artist, a man who has become a restless citizen of
the world, as was James Joyce."
Of Allison Crowe's contribution of "Joan of Arc" to its 'All Star
Tribute", a CD titled "Cohen Covered", MOJO says: "Once famously
described by the Vancouver Courier as possessing a style akin
to 'Elton John meets Edith Piaf', the Canadian singer-songwriter
Allison Crowe is renowned for her ability to blend control and
melodrama. Certainly she does so on this spirited cover of Cohen's
Songs of Love and Hate classic, a track which also powerfully
showcases her considerable talent as a fine interpreter of song."
Cool! I've got so much catching up to do!!
Pretty much ever since Allison returned from Europe - we've been
having web problems, which led to us changing servers. Still the email
problems have persisted, and other tech glitches.
It's been one long computer/web headache. Fingers crossed, things are
looking better today. If so, time to catch up with the world!!
For the podcast, do we go to your site - or other links?

Will have a new episode of the podcast up this week with some of
Allison's music. Something different. Someone started the idea of
people doing a podcast every day for the month of November.
I'm not uploading it everyday, but I'm recording bits and pieces
daily. I introduced 3 of Allison's songs, then when you hear my voice
again it's the next day. We'll see how it sounds. Might be fun.
Think I forgot to tell Allison or the gang here that my birthday is 2
days after hers. Funny tidbit. A fellow Scorpio. :)

Doing another hockey game as I type this. But I fit in 3 of Allison's
songs at the end of the hour I had. And yes I have it up before the
1st period has ended. That's fast.
http://www.archive.org/details/SaltWaterMusicOct24th2008
When I lived in Ottawa from 1998-2001 I watched more Canucks games
then Senators. That Vancouver team was fun to watch. Now...... not
so much. Sat thru the Vancouver-Washington game that was on
CanucksPPV. Had a free preview of NHL Centre Ice and got that game.
Horrible effort.
Too bad Allison missed Leonard, maybe another time. But good news
about the producer of Alice Cooper. Alice is coming to Kingston.
You'd be amazed how many acts have played St. John's but NOT Kingston.
And we have a brand new arena. Weird.
But I have a 3rd row seat for Great Big Sea next month. :)

hehe cool, I shall enjoy this blending of my top passions as soon as
the time is present; likely this weekend! thank you!
I've been catching up on sleep, now I no longer am working round the
clock in European time zones as well as North American...
as for catching Leonard Cohen in concert in Europe - it won't be
this year; paths crossed in numerous cities - but either Alley was
days ahead, or LC was days ahead; in Vienna, a Sony BMG rep came to
Allison's show, and had just finished working all the Leonard Cohen
show presentation
Allison reached Newfoundland today - in time for Alice Cooper!!
funnily, the producer who worked on Alice Cooper's last million
selling album is one of the first folks in the mainstream record
industry to get really excited about Allison and her music; the same
fellow was manager to India.Arie, and a chum and former bandmate of
Bon Jovi - so, Kevin Bacon has to be somewhere in this picture...
right now, I'm at that point when you feel more tired for having
rested, than for staying awake endlessly - soon, I'll be back in
body... and broadcasting hockey games!
I'd give the Vancouver Canucks an extra goal in Game 7 of the '94
finals, and, the Stanley Cup would be ours!!

Adrian here are the links to the hockey game if you're bored. First
hour is 30 minutes of music and a pregame.
http://130.15.62.100/logger_files/20081010190001.mp3http://130.15.62.100/logger_files/20081010200001.mp3http://130.15.62.100/logger_files/20081010210001.mp3
Hectic night. Did my show for an hour then had a brand new volunteer
who goes to Queen's do the pregame. Believe it or not the new guy on
the broadcast is named Adrian. Can't make this stuff up.
More unbelievable is this Adrian is from..... Newfoundland. Small
world huh? So we talked about Newfoundland while the game was going
on. :)
Game had a little technical problem but it wasn't that long. First
broadcast of the year.
Allison going to have a chance to see Leonard Cohen in Europe? I
remember in Toronto during her concert she knew he was touring around
the same time as her.
http://www.leonardcohen.com/tour.cgi
I'll cross my fingers her plans line up. lol.

Ruckus Bio: Allison Crowe
As featured on The Ruckus Episode 3, online October 20, 2008.
Seriously, if you have not heard of Allison Crowe, you're living
under a rock somewhere. She's very young, incredibly talented, and a
smart businesswoman to boot. She's got her own record label, tours
constantly around North America and Europe, and manages to live on
both Canadian coasts. She was a pleasure to talk to...and her music
kicks butt too. I always hate comparing artists to other
artists....but I'll try to do it justice. Take Tori Amos, Ani
Difranco, and maybe a bit of Sting...and presto, you've got the next
great Canadian singer/songwriter export.

Cool, thanks, indeed!
Do you archive the hockey broadcasts?! It'd be then possible to
enjoy two of my favourite things - music and hockey!!
I have sooo much catching up to do now.
The curtain has fallen tonight, in Edinburgh, on the last concert of
Allison's current European tour. It's been a smashing success - and
it's been crazy, too, as we've found our communications (phone,
internet etc.) hasn't worked much of the time, so, it's been a lot
of hours just keeping things on track with travel and all.
Billie Woods is touring with Alley, opening the concerts, and,
taking fabulous photographs of people, concert, and countrysides.
Once she's back in Canada, there'll be plenty of images to enjoy.
(Right now, she's got a good sampling up on her facebook page @

Thanks/merci Jessy, Rob, everyone - everywhere!!
I'll aim to get some rest, and then busy myself writing about
European and North American happenings.
Happy whatever you're doing!!
cheers, Ad

You're welcome Jessy.
I'll be playing some more of Allison on Friday's show, big reason is
the week after is a hockey game at 7pm so I'll probably have about
45-50 minutes for my show. That will be my "just playing music till
the game starts" show. lol. Then I'm the tech producer for the hockey
game so I'll be there till 10pm.
But this week is normal thankfully. :)

All 3 of Allison's Beatles covers on the show last night. And I read
part of the CBC Radio 3 blog on air.
http://www.archive.org/details/SaltWaterMusicSept262008Hour1
Had no plan for last night's show but then realized, 'i could play
female artists in the first hour then guys in the second'. So voila,
a theme for last night.
Bi-coastal I've heard before for Americans who live in New York-Los
Angeles, but it works for Allison. :)
And Happy Birthday to Jessica too.

http://www.blog.collectedsounds.com/?p=2283 is where you'll find
this delightful review of Allison's newest album, "Little Light", on
the Collected Sounds blog.
Collected Sounds is produced by Amy Lotsberg of Minneapolis, USA.
It's a very rich compendium of reviews, interviews, and other
commentary "Celebrating Independent Musicians". Amy has been
lovingly dedicated to sharing news of music and musicians for years.
Amy and Collected Sounds, (in late 2003), was the first to bring to
an international audience word of a young Canadian artist named
Allison Crowe! Here's the latest on Alley from CS - and, do visit
and check out plenty more, you'll read about artists that are well-
worth hearing, and often not on the mainstream radar.
Album Review: Little Light by Allison Crowe (posted in Album Reviews)
Album Name: Little Light

First of all, look at that cover photo… could she be any cuter?
Secondly, I don't really know what else I can say about Allison
Crowe that I haven't said already in the 6 years I've been reviewing
her CDs and listening to her music. She's fantastic, I know it, you
know it, and since she only gets better as the years progress you
can probably guess what I think of this record. I am just having a
hard time putting it into words. Luckily she is more creative than I
and keeps putting out great records.
`Disease' is really cool. It is very dramatic. There is lots of
banging on piano and weird rhythms. This is quite different for her.
The piano is dizzying. Several times now, while it's been on shuffle
with others, it's stopped me in my tracks. This is currently my
favorite track.
While I am at a loss for new adjectives, she is always coming up
with something new. Guess that's why she writes songs and I don't!
Another great one Ally!

It is very nice, indeed, to see - and also the pic they chose to
accompany the news article, I dig that, as well!
Most fun is the inclusion of a word I've been searching for - ever
since Allison became a resident of, both, Vancouver Island, and
Newfoundland, several years back. It's hard to explain to people
that she lives on two, opposite, sides of this giant country called
Canada. The CBC calls her "bi-coastal", and, that says it in a word

I'm dealing with mailserver issues, and, the tour has started last
night in Frankfurt! It's always a fun time at Jazzlokal Mampf, and
the place is more packed each time Allison visits. Danke schoen!!
Tonight, the concert is in Paris. And, the MC, blogger Jessy Kuijer,
of "Where the Lions Weep", celebrates her birthday! Pop the
champagne ( :
Also, I've just seen a delightful review of the "Little Light"
album, by one of the first, if not THE first international reviewer
to discover Allison and her music. I'll pull that out, and make a
new message!

Allison Crowe To Headline Concert For John Lennon Memorial Garden
Posted by Jennifer Van Evra on Sep 24, 2008
Last month, bi-coastal singer-songwriter Allison Crowe wowed Liverpool
crowds at Beatle Week 2008, the largest annual Beatles celebration.
Now she's been invited to headline a special concert in Scotland that
will raise funds for the John Lennon Memorial Garden.
Happening October 11 in Durness - the most northwesterly village in
Britain - the John Lennon Memorial Garden Concert is a benefit for the
only permanent memorial to Lennon in Scotland.
Lennon holidayed in Durness from the ages of 9 to 15, and often
returned with his wife Yoko Ono and their kids as an adult. He
reportedly even tried to buy the estate shortly before his death in
December 1980.
The song "In My Life" is also said to be inspired by the village,
which has a population of just 400 people.
Last year, Crowe was one of the stars at the John Lennon Northern
Lights Festival, which was held in the remote town and went on to win
an award Best New Festival in the UK.
"John Lennon was an amazing, artistic, peaceful spirit. He made a huge
impact on society. Durness made a huge impact on him and on me too and
I am glad to return," says Crowe, who was not yet born when Lennon was
murdered.
"I remember being terrified of the roads, but the beauty of the place
managed to take over... [It's] one of the most gorgeous places I have
seen in all my travels."
Crowe, who will be on tour in Europe at the time, will fly from Prague
to play the festival.
"I think the fact that people come together to celebrate the life of
someone who was so devoted to peace and love is, in a sense, achieving
exactly what John set out to do. Keeping his spirit alive through the
garden and through the festival is that sense of his presence and
purpose living on in all of us. We all shine on."
Mary Mackay, chair of the Durness Community Council, said she's
thrilled that Lennon's link to the area will be celebrated once again.
"I could not think of anybody more fitting to celebrate John's links
with Durness than Allison. She was a knockout last year and put hairs
on the back of everybody that heard her," she said.
"We are hoping it will be a great day - and it keeps John's flame
alive in a place that he loved very much."
Save Adrian some time looking up the links so here they are. Hour 1
has Allison's music at the end of the show. Then start of Hour 2 is
when I talked about her European tour and the Toronto/Ottawa shows in
November.

Sometimes the radio logger loses a few seconds when it switches to the
next hour. Little annoying but not that bad.
Yes, the show includes a live version of the song 'Florida' by Blue
Rodeo. Wasn't sure where it was recorded then Greg Keelor mentions it
being in Sasktatoon near the end. :)
I can't describe what a shower has to do with that song, but Greg
explains the story before the song starts. ha ha.

Je suis fatigue (readying Allison's European tour details) so, I shall
locate the links when I awake - but, there is more Salt Water podcast
goodness online. Music and tour talk - following some interesting
shower talk from Canada's Blue Rodeo.
There's just no end to what's happening right now, and, I keep
thinking I'll catch up - but, more happens. Touring is an ever-
expanding map, particularly in Europe where there is not the same
paperwork as in North America. However, I am focussed on making bigger
strides with US Visa practices, and, one day, Allison will be
classified as a "P1" and that makes border crossing here so much
simpler.
One step at a time.
There's exciting news on the media front - and, that, too, deserves
some sleep, and proper presentation. A demain!
'best, Ad
There was a Pepsi machine down the hallway. So I guess I could've
ordered the food and walked to get a Pepsi..... but that defeats the
purpose of "room service".
I think the LOTR reference came between songs as she was talking about
herself. If I remember it started with her talking about how big a
Leonard Cohen fan she is. One concert she talked about Leonard a lot
and then heard someone in the front row say something about it.
Allison said she's a huge fan and called herself a "geek". :) She
threw in LOTR as a good geek reference.
Crowd that night was a good one. And we answered when she asked
questions between songs show like "how's everyone doing?". You might
not think that's a big deal but we heard about shows where people
wouldn't respond to her chit chat at all.
Oh ya, last radio show on Saturday Night. Then Fridays at 6pm EST.
