Hi David,
I am in San Diego and I have both lutes and an 11-string Asturias.
There is a group of lutenists in LA and also in San Fran. They have
chat rooms like this one. If you are interested i can try to get you on
the lists.
Have you tried the Filippo Dalla Casa book of lute and mandolino music?
It is in staff notation.
best,
Marion

Hello Christoffer,
I'm a guitarist living in California. I have two instruments: an 11-string alto
guitar by Bolin (similar to the one played by Goran Sollscher), and a 13-string
alto guitar that was built for me by Roger Stromberg in Sweden. I play
baroque and Rennaisance lute music. I especially love the music of Weiss, for
which the 13-string instrument is ideal. I would very much like to find more
lute
music in staff notation, as I am not as good yet at reading lute tablature. Do
you or others have some good ideas for where I could find more music? I
know Sollscher has arranged lots of music for his 11-string, but I don't know if
he has published it anywhere. Thanks for creating this group
David A.
Hello dear members of the alto guitar group!
I'm happy to announce that within a very short time a new site will be
published. I'm hoping to move all the activity of this Yahoo Group to
that new site.
The adress will be altoguitar.com (at the moment redirecting to the
Yahoo Group).
The site is pretty much finished and I am just solving a few technical
and design issues.
There will be a forum, with alot more features than the present one.
Also there will be a gallery where you all may upload pictures and
hopefully even short movie-clips. There is a commentsystem in the
gallery so you will have the opportunity to comment on posted pictures.
A download section is obligatory! So there will of course be one. Here
you can upload and download tabulature, sheet music, sound and movie
clips (of your concert maybe...?) and other files.
The site is a portal built in PHP, so it is very flexible and should
be able to suit all our needs. With the modules and features already
included it can do everything the Yahoo Group can and much more, but
better!
I'm hoping that the portal will be the natural place to go for people
who play, build and know the instrument. But also the first place you
would go as a beginner or just to find out what the alto guitar is.
Eventually there will be articles explaining how to play and how to
transcribe for the instrument. I'm hoping you guys will help out with
interesting articles.
I'm also eager to build a list of luthiers making alto guitars.
Just wanted to update you all.
Looking forward to launch the site and hear your comments.
Feel free to voice your opinion and give me suggestions on what to
include in the portal.
Regards.
Christoffer Wadensten, admin The Alto Guitar Group.
Hi Yiorgos,
Why not consider 13 strings? Then you could play Weiss with no
modifications.
The scalloped fretboard sounds interesting but will add considerable
cost to
the instrument. Let us know how it turns out and maybe post a picture
on the site.
Cheers,
Marion

Hi
I've been checking out your 11-strings.
I was looking into having one made in the near future.
I was considering having some of the low strings
fretless, as well as the possibility of a scalloped
fretboard and installing 11 RMC piezos for
a multi string output to be interfaced with
electronics.
What are your prices, waiting period etc?
thank you

Hi Zenguitar:
> may be a silly question, but does anyone know of any "cheap"
> 11 strings?
I want to make sure you are familiar with Houston, Texas, luthier
Michael McBroom. He has become a sort of specialist in multi-string
guitar construction. His last 4 or 5 guitars have all been 10-
strings, and his waiting list is booked up for the next 6 months or
so with more 10-strings. So he has run of consecutive 10-string
builds going on about a dozen, which is VERY unusual for any luthier.
This is partly because he has priced his work such that it is much
more affordable than most hand-built guitars. He has an entry-level
10-string that is just $1750. Custom work starts at just $2,000, so
you may want to ask him about the 11-string you have in mind. His
construction process is documented at www.cathedralguitar.com and his
10-string entry model is described here on Janet Marlow's website:
<http://www.tenstringguitar.com/pages/4/index.htm>
He has a introductory blurb on his site, here:
<www.michaelmcbroom.com>
and his e-mail address is CC'd in this header if you wish to contact
him.
I personally own one of his guitars (guitar #9, which is documented
in his 10-string construction article) that I use for amplified gigs,
and it is excellent, and I know of no better value in a new multi-
string.
Good luck!
Stephen
www.cathedralguitar.com
Does anyone know of a luthier named Liberto PLANAS
in Paris? I walked outside his shop and saw a cool looking 11-string
guitar. I wonder if it's any good. He also teaches instrument making.
Anyone played any of his instruments?
thanks
Who can blame him? I wouldn't sell mine, defect and all.
A used one won't be cheap unless it needs work. Good luck and let us
know what you finally get.
Cheers,
Marion

Hi Everyone,
I also have an Asturias, which I obtained broken off of eBay. It was a
great deal as the repair was very inexpensive compared to the total
worth of the instrument. I like it very much. It is easy to play and
tune. (I mean physically easy, as opposed to having to press down with
100 lbs. of pressure on each string. I do not mean to imply that the
music is always so easy.) The tone is wonderful, to say nothing of the
intonation. If I were to get another guitar, it would be the Dresden
model 13-string guitar by Michale Thames, although I don't imagine it
is very cheap.
One thing you might want to do is to keep an eye on eBay if you are not
in an hurry. If you needed one yesterday, you might need to come up
with the money and it might be more than $4K depending on what you want
to buy.
Best regards,
Marion

Hello Zenguitar,
Have you looked at the Japanese "Asturias" model hand-crafted by
Tsuji? Although these may exceed your budget as a new item, part-
exchange may well bring them within your reach. I have one and am
very pleased with it. As it happens, my model was obtained on a part-
exchange deal from a major UK-dealer.
Hope this helps?
James.

Dear All,
I have found some music, originally for theorbo by de Visee, that has been
arranged for
archlute by Milorad Romic. Curiously, the tuning of the archlute has the third
couirse at
Bflat, rather than A. As the music goes no lower than a Bflat on the eleventh
course, the
pieces fit exactly onto an altgitarren. The pieces are called: "5 Suites
Transcribed for Archlute, Arranged by Milorad Romic." they are published by Tree
Editions,
2002. Price E20. The address is: TREE EDITION, Albert Reyerman, Finkenberg 89, D
-23558, Lubeck, Germany. Email <albertreyerman@...>.
James.
Sorry for the mailbombing.
Saw that I forgot to say who sent the messsage.
It was me. Christoffer, the admin for the Yahoo-group.

I sale my alto guitar for 6.100 euros.
It's a beautiful instrument made in 1992 by Phillip Woodfield.
The sound is clear and warm with power.
Please let me your mail adress and I send you a photo.
Let me know.
Best regards.

Hello Marion,
It seems my email has been subject to bouncing, so my last message may
not have reached the group. Piccinini worked entirely in renaissance
tuning. He claimed to have invented the theorbo, and...recommended the
use of nails! Pachelbel is mostly known for his organ and string works,
you most probably know his Canon in D. The piece I have by him, which I
suspect is an arrangement of a keyboard work, is in baroque tuning, as
one would expect from his dates.
Have you tried the publishers Minkoff?
Cheers,
James.
Hello James,
Thanks for the info. I am hot on the trail of any Piccinini music. I
don't know
how many volumes he wrote but the folks on lute lists would know more
about it. I will ask Donatella Galletti, who is an expert, and maybe
she
can tell us more. Will post the result when I have it. I have not seen
too much music for 11c baroque lute and most if it is French. I know
there
is a lot of it but I just have not seen it.
I did not know that there was a Piccinini book for 11c. Now the hard
part -
I have only one 11-string guitar and right now it is in the Dm tuning.
What if I tuned it like a tiorba and liked that tuning as well? So many
tunings, so few (23 now) instruments! :)
Best to all,
Marion

Hello Marion &Stephen,
Thanks for the suggestions. I have to admit that I have a short suite by
P.,commencing
with an Allemande "L'Amant mal contant", Nurnberg Stadt. ma 2353b, that I
downloaded
from some site whose URL I just cannot remember! I gather there are two volumes
of lute
music by him... The suite I have is for 11c baroque lute, though tuniung is
given for a
twelfth course?
Cheers,
James.

by

++I ordered Piccinini intavolature di liuto 1623, 1639 with the hope
that
it containes some music for theorbo. I also ordered Kapsberger, libro 1
di liuto
libro 1 and 4 di chitarrone (tiorba). If you go to Sarge Gerbode's web
site, there
are a couple of .pdf files of theorbo music that you can download.
BTW, my first CD is in the mastering stage.

Hi Marion:
> I just ordered books by Piccinini and Kapsberger for tiorba.
Last night I restrung my Nunez 10-string in Theorbo tuning, and read
through one of my favorite pieces, Kapsberger's Tocatta Arpegiatta
from the original tab facsimile. The guitar sounds great!!! It had
been strung in Dm but it sounds much better in Theorbo tuning that I
am going to keep it there for a good long while.
Theorbo tuning is simply amazing on guitar, and Richard, at Strings
by Mail, now sells a Hannabach Theorbo set for 10- or 11-string
guitar. It goes down to low D on the 10-string, which is the lowest
note of Tocatta Arpegiatta, so the fit is perfect.
Please let us know which books you ordered, as I'm about to order the
Piccinini theorbo music as well.
Best,
Stephen
All,
There is lots of lute music, almost all in tab, available on various
lute web pages..
In addition, you can buy books of lute music from Los Angeles Classical
Guitars at www.lacg.com.
I just ordered books by Piccinini and Kapsberger for tiorba. You can
order a book
of music for archlute by dalla Casa from Florence. If interested, I can
dig up the
address, please email me and I will look for it.
Web sites that have sheet music in pdf form include but are not limited
to:
http://web.tiscali.it/awebd/http://www.gerbode.net/ft2/composers/

One option is to tune your altgitarren in the Dm tuning: FDAFDAGFEDC
and get a book of french baroque music. unilibro.it may have it I don't
know. Then you can read the tab exactly without having to make an
arrangement. If anyone is interested in this option I can ask some
lutenist friends where to find the books.
Hope this helps,
Marion

Finding music for the multi-string is somewhat of a struggle, because most internet sources are not the kind of place where you can flip through the pages and check if low bass octaves are indicated.
But here is a method I recently discovered:
GSP, in San Francisco, has an excellent selection of guitar music in standard notation. I was recently interested in their Kapsberger book:
I called the store and asked the clerk to walk over and flip through some pages and describe to me over the phone what he saw, as there is no sense to spend a non-refundable $41.50 for a book that might not be usable. The clerk was very happy to do this for me, and, as it turns out , the book is a strange hybrid -- the note heads are in modern notation, but the rhythms are printed above the staff like in lute tab. But the low basses were indicated and I bought the book and am very happy with it.
So I suggest calling GSP, or any other larger mail-order sheet music store, perhaps at an off-peak hour, and have them check out the book in person before you buy it. This way you have access to getting a lot of published music, but can find out in advance if it is appropriate for multi-string guitarist who want modern notation.
Dear Christopher,
Stephen has supplied the web site link and I am trying to order a
copy. Many thanks for responding with the address of the publishers.
James.
