On March 17, Hubert Bognermayr, the Austrian electronic music
pioneer, died. He was born in 1948. He was the founder of the Blue
Chip Orchestra, as well as its project designer, engineer and
Fairlight computer specialist. In the 1970's he was the head of
the famous Austrian Symphonic Rock Group EELA CRAIG. Together with
Ulrich Rutzel (President of Erdenklang Records and producer of
Blue Chip Orchestra), he founded THE ARS ELECTRONICA festival for
electronic arts in Linz, Austria, in 1979. Bognermayr was also the
head of the BLUE CHIP ACADEMY.

On May 29 (22.30), Albert Gimenez and Dom F. Scab will give a live
performance at Heliogabal (Ramon y Cajal, 80, Barcelona, Spain).

Taking as a starting point the novel "Wolves of the Gods" by Allan
Cole, Bjorn Lynne has created a thrilling sonic adventure in this
album, of a great artistic quality. His talent can be appreciated
as he creates dreamy melodies of great strength, that become
perfectly fused with the rhythms and the magical atmospheres,
outlining an impressive musical landscape of a mystic character.
The style, powerful, dense, enters within the realm of Space
Progressive Rock, although with traits of Classical Music and
Ambient.

BJORN LYNNE
Bjorn Lynne is originally from Norway, where he spent his
childhood and youth. In 1995 his music brought him to England,
where he has now settled down in the Yorkshire countryside,
working in his own sound studio, called Studio17. After two self-
published CD albums, he signed with Centaur Discs in 1995,
released "Dreamstate". His earlier albums were mostly electronic
and made with synthesizers. On the later albums, he uses more
guitars (acoustic and electric), basses and other acoustic
instruments. Bjorn's music has been compared to Mike Oldfield,
Tangerine Dream, Genesis, Pink Floyd and others.

"SOLSTICE: TRIBUTO A JARRE"

Like the title suggests, this album is a special homage of several
synthesists to Jean Michel Jarre, the famous electronic music
*star. Many of them admit to have in Jarre one of their basic
influences. The musicians, from Spain and Argentina, are
subscribers of the discussion list Fairlight-Jarre. The themes
share the common characteristic that they have been composed under
a general focus oriented towards Jarre's style. Most of the pieces
are especially created for this album. The artists here included
are: Luis Alberto Naranjo, VMG, Sergio Koval, Quim Guzman, Javier
Garcia, Render, Jordi Coloma, Antonio Gabriel, Lightnet,
A.D.S.R., Gustavo A. Rubias. All the themes have an enormous
strength. A true delight for the ears from the first to the last
theme. A place where great talents have met. In short, a record
that will enthusiasm the lovers of electronic music.

"Human Feelings" by Luis Alberto Naranjo, which has nine
compositions, is electronic music whose style ranges between
Synth-Pop, Space Music and New Instrumental Music. Some
Progressive Rock traits are also perceived, as well as some
Classical touches. The music is very emotional, with romantic and
also solemn traits, yet without falling into an excessive
sweetness. The artist relies mostly in the melody so as to
transmit the emotions of his music. All the pieces are a clear
sample of the big talent of this composer. The warmth of the music
and its strength make of the listening of this album a complete
experience. I'll never tire of reccommending this kind of works,
because they are part of the scarce samples of quality that can be
found in the field of the current electronic music.

In this CD, Luis Alberto Naranjo presents nine wonderful pieces,
which prove that we are dealing with an experienced composer with
excellent skills. The themes, near to the New Instrumental Music
and Synth-Pop, have a pleasant freshness, thanks to the melodies
and atmospheres. Some of the pieces possess a certain Classical
character, others approach Techno, and others have the romantic
air of the rock ballads. The artist uses electronic instruments so
as to create a virtual orchestra, where both instrumental of an
acoustic appearance and those sounds that turn out to be unreal,
magical, are fused together. The result cannot be more convincing:
warm melodies and atmospheres. In all, these nine themes reveal
the artistic maturity of the composer, as well as his wide musical
vision. In a few words, a work that will enthusiasm the
aficionados to the New Instrumental music and melodic electronic
music in general.

I'll never tire of saying that in the current alternative musical
panorama there are bands and artists that have something new to
say and others that don't. Midnight Syndicate no doubt belong to
the former. From the precise instant of the beginning of the
album, we witness a display of creative, sonic energy of a high
degree. None of the themes included in the album goes to waste.
Instruments, sound effects, arrangements, everything is aimed at a
work that in some instances overwhelms the audience. Taking as a
starting point the Gothic horror genre, the band has created a
sort of music which could be used as a perfect soundtrack for a
gothic horror film.as for instance those memorable movies directed
by Roger Corman, based on Edgar Allan Poe's tales, starring
Vincent Price. In an icy atmosphere, disquieting melodies between
the Gothic romanticism and the Darkness, hellish sound effects,
and occasional ghostly voices, are the basic ingredients that give
shape to this album. 21 themes that take us into the mysteries of
uncountable, fantastic legends. This album marks the first
collaboration between Midnight Syndicate (Edward Douglas & Gavin
Goszka) and gothic fantasy artist Joseph Vargo of Monolith
Graphics. Douglas and Goszka have composed the music, whereas
Vargo recites some texts with his suggestive, mysterious voice, in
some passages of the release. Vargo has also painted the
astounding cover of the album. No doubt, this is an amazing work,
highly reccommended to those who seek something more on the line
of current electronic music.

LOREN GOLD:
"REFLECTIONS OF GOLD"

"Reflections of Gold" is a piano album of a romantic quality, with
traits of Classical and some Jazz touches, presided by melody.
Through 14 compositions, Loren Gold shows the great usefulness the
piano has for him as his main vehicle for expression. The artist
wishes to explain in sounds what the feelings express, and to do
so he utilizes the instrument he has most available to him. This
is how he succeeds in creating a series of lyric pieces of an
extreme sensitivity, apt for introspection. The music invites us
to reflection and to the pacification of the spirit. Although in
quite parts there are piano solos, in others the piano is
accompanied by several acoustic instruments.

ATTRITION:
"THE JEOPARDY MAZE"
Projekt
Founded by Martin Bowes in the early 1980's, Attrition was
considered an important part of the Industrial / Experimental
music scene (alongside such bands as SPK, Clock DVA, Coil and
others). This new release has a style approaching the Gothic
trends. It also shows a Trance character, yet one being mostly
linked to the rhythmic aspect of these trends. There also are
compositions which can be labelled within the realms of Synth-Pop
and Techno. Certain Ambient and Classical traits can be perceived
as well. The melodies are cold, mysterious. The voices (especially
that of Martin Bowes) that appear in quite of the passages are
treated with sound effects, turning them ethereal, almost ghostly.
The last piece, a homage to Wendy Carlos, is an electronic version
of the hymn "God save the Queen".

Susan McKeown, Cathie Ryan and Robin Spilberg have united their
artistic efforts in this beautiful album. As the title suggests,
this is a very emotional release celebrating mothers & motherhood.
The general style of this work can be placed between Celtic and
contemporany melodic music. There also are themes which can be
labelled within the realm of melodic Pop. The balanced selection,
which includes both traditional and original compositions, will no
doubt attract their unconditional followers. The music is, on the
whole, melodic, soft, and with clear romantic traits. Sometimes it
becomes festive, and at other times melancholy. Several of the
pieces are sung. The warm voices of Susan, Cathie and Robin take
us step by step into a world full of sensitivity.

ASHERA:
"COBALT 144"
Ashera makes in this interesting album a kind of electronic music
of a clearly Space-Ambient style. The structure of the music
consists of difused melodies that come and go, dense, unearthly
environments that surround these melodies, and occasional sound
effects, that in some passages are an important part of the
ambiance. The compositions are slow, hypnotic. Ashera achieves in
them a very effective, attractive and even meditative atmosphere.
There are dark, mysterious passages. Others turn out to be epic,
majestic.

"JOURNEY TO THE AMAZON"

Sharon Isbin (guitar), Paul Winter (soprano saxophone) and
Gaudencio Thiago de Mello (percussion) perform in this album a
collection of instrumental pieces composed by Laurindo Almeida
(1917-1995), Antonio Lauro (1917-1986), Agustin Barrios Mangore
(1885-1944), Isaias Savio (1900-1977), Alfredo Vianna
(Pixinguinha) (1898-1975), Gentil Montaña, Leo Brouwer, Benito
Canonico, and Gaudencio Thiago de Mello himself. Throughout the 54
minutes that the CD lasts, we can hear themes with Bossanova
reminiscences, others of a clear Classical structure, and various
with some touches typical of jazz. The music is, on the whole,
melodic, warm, and with romantic traits.
