REVIEWS:

A.D.S.R:
"ANALOG SEQUENCE"
A.D.S.R is a duet formed by Marcel Castro and Jorge Landeira. This
album, a loyal reflection of the artistic direction of these
musicians, is an interesting combination of Synth-Pop and Space
Sequencer Music. The music by A.D.S.R shows a tendency towards the
European electronic music trend followed by artists such as for
instance Jean-Michel Jarre, rather than towards the Berlin School
electronic music trend. The music has a pleasant freshness, thanks
to the imaginative melodies. In a few words, a work where the
artists contribute their musical talent to achieve an emotive
sonic journey.
JORGE MUNNSHE

A.D.S.R:
"ELECTRONIC ART"
This new release by this duet has a style approaching the Techno
and Synth-Pop trends, although it also shows a Space character,
yet one being mostly linked to the rhythmic aspect of this genre.
In this album, A.D.S.R combines dreamy melodies of great strength,
with unearthly environments, outlining an impressive sonic
landscape. The compositions are basically upbeat, with sequencer-
based rhythms and electronic percussion.
JORGE MUNNSHE

BARBARA LEWIS:
"ONCE IN A BLUE MOON"
Cutting Edge Productions
This CD-single contains two pieces, with an overall running time
of ten minutes, sung by Barbara Lewis. Beautiful melodies,
perfectly intertwined, both with respect to the music and the
lyrics, follow one another without ups and downs, in a work that
Barbara's followers will no doubt appreciate. With her collaborate
Carolyn Klause, George Doxas, Robin Greig, Jim Doxas, Nicholas
Regush, Mark Corwin and others.
DEREK DOARN

BARBARA LEWIS
Barbara Lewis is a unique singer/songwriter who combines beautiful
melodies and a haunting, wide-range voice, with lyrics that often
carry a hard-edged message. She refers to her style of music as
New World Fusion.
Essential works:
-HARA'S QUEST
-ONCE IN A BLUE MOON

MAX CORBACHO:
"VESTIGES"
Floc / Free Records
This is an evocative release where the melody, wrapped up in
floating textures, goes through a universe of magic and mystery.
The CD in general could be labelled as Ambient / Space Music.
However, the melodies and the rhythms incorporate elements of
World Music, as well as Industrial traits. The music is slow,
although it does not lack rhythm in certain themes or passages.
The rhythmic structure of the music tends to be based on the
percussion. The melodies are dense, unearthly, enigmatic.
EDGAR KOGLER

CAZENAVE:
"RADIO 1, RADIO 3 & BBC RECORDINGS"
Astral
This compact disc gathers a collection of electronic / progressive
rock pieces recorded for the famous BBC, Radio 1 (Spain) and Radio
3 (Spain). In 1973, Guillermo Cazenave left the progressive rock
band where he was drummer and vocalist, to dedicate his efforts to
studying and composing another type of music, directed more
towards the new possibilities of electronics.Later, he became
aware that he had formed part of the group of pioneer electronic /
New Age musicians at the 70's. However, he never stopped composing
and recording rock songs for himself. He has now started to re-
record and produce many of them. Those included are spontaneous
recordings, within the context of these radio programs, where he
has also played synth pieces close to his style better known to
the public. On the whole, the album presents a little of each one
of the aspects of Cazenave's music; his romantic side, the cosmic
one, and the one within the realm of Progressive Rock. A general
trait of the album is the fact that the music happens to be very
intense, vital, as if reflecting deep emotions. Some passages
range between Progressive / Space Rock and the rising Electronic
Cosmic Music of the 70's. Cazenave (keyboards, guitars and
vocals), is accompanied by several guests in some themes.
JORGE MUNNSHE

GUILLERMO CAZENAVE
Guillermo Cazenave was born in 1955, in Argentina, into family
full of musicians and personalities connected with the world of
culture and art. 1968-69: First songs and two track recordings
playing guitar and flute. 1970-72: He composed and recorded more
than 200 songs, continued also studying classical guitar and
flute. 1973-75: First experimental and instrumental recordings
using special spatial sound effects. In 1974, he recorded his
first album for a theatrical production. He began studying
classical piano. 1976-77: Settled in New York, met Philip Glass
and continued carrying out new recordings, using for the first
time synthesizers as predominant instruments. 1978-82: Settled in
London, making recordings of the first works that would enable him
to get to know those first circles of the newly emerging "New
Age", and got in contact with musicians such as Anthony Phillips,
Steven Halpern, etc. 1983-86: Moved to Spain and founded Astral
(first label of New Age in Spain). First concerts in Spain.
Collaborated with Fernando Salazar (founder of the Institute of
Music Theraphy & Biomusic). 1987-89: Numerous concerts, journeys
to France and England and further recordings now helped Cazenave
to confront the "New Age" of muzak and enabled him to continue on
as independent in elaborating compositions somewhat symphonic and
within his own concept of "metamusic". 1990- 93: Guillermo gave
concerts in Mexico, U.S.A. and other countries. Also completed the
soundtrack for the American film "The Touch of Zen", directed by
John Liu. 1994-96: More trips with concerts and various television
and radio programs in U.S.A., Mexico, France, England, Argentina,
etc. Cazenave recorded two "jams" with Steven Halpern ("Spanish
Impromptu", 1994) and Anthony Phillips ("The Meadows of
Englewood", 1995) as well as two videos with each musician. 1997-
98: Performances in U.S.A., Spain, Mexico, and in programs for the
B.B.C. and the Spanish National Radio.

ZEUS ORTH:
"CLASICOS ALEGRES"
Astral
The 19 tracks contained in this CD are electronic versions of a
New Age air that Zeus Orth, a prestigious Classical pianist, has
done of pieces by Classical composers. Zeus Orth's personal style
causes the effect that these pieces sound softer, more ethereal.
There are famous compositions by Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms,
Bizet, Verdi, Bach, Chopin and other Classical artists, along with
traditional themes such as "Greensleeves".
VALERIANO GUIOL

LIGHTNET MULTIMEDIA:
"REFLECTIONS 2" (CD-ROM)
Lightnet Multimedia
Reflections 2 is the second edition of a classic work, the perfect
homage to one of the greatest contemporary artists of our time:
Vangelis, the Greek keyboardist and electronic author, at the same
time point of convergence for massive audiences and almost unknown
person. Reflections II has been completely updated and includes
the latest data about Vangelis. This artist has a vast production
but only a small percentage of it has been published. Fans demand
constantly info about him and also musical rarities, and
Reflections II is a very welcome addition to this field. It is a
multimedia CD ROM written by fans and produced for fans, the
perfect tool that many of them have been waiting for. It is not a
commercial initiative but a private and neat work which probably
will evolve even more in the future, adding more features and
improvements. It has been obviously conceived for all those who
want to know "the Greek" much better. Thanks to the new medium,
the work contains text, images, sound samples and also video.
Created by a young group of design, publicity and audio experts
(Lightnet Multimedia) the CD has a very usable interface: all info
is not very far, no much more than a couple of mouse clicks.
Reflections is available in Spanish and in English with only
little differences between them. For example, the Spanish version
includes a complete biography, discography (with sound samples,
covers, song titles...), concerts, rarities, collaborations,
interviews, equipment, photos, and so on. An essential resource
that everybody who loves the music of Evanghelos Odyssey
Papathanassiou should have.

ANTHONY PHILLIPS:
"LEGEND"
Astral
Legend, the new album by the ex-Genesis Anthony Phillips, contains
23 pieces from the 1976-1999 period. They are new tracks not
released previously, and a good way to see the evolutionary path
followed by Phillips during these years. The guitarist has
composed all themes, with special inputs from several friends
(Scott, Cazenave, Heyworth and Rutherford). The music in this
album has a variety of styles (classical, electronic, pop, new
age...). Phillips plays guitars and keyboards and is accompanied
by Mike Rutherford (bass), the Gabrieli String Quartet, Quique
Berro (classical guitar), Guillermo Cazenave (electric guitar),
Simon Morris (cello) and others.
MANUEL MONTES

ANTHONY PHILLIPS
Ever since he left the Rock band Genesis, which he cofounded with
his friends Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford and Tony banks,
Phillips has looked for new musical paths based on his studies of
Classical Music and of other sources that would allow him more
adequate scope fo his abilities as a guitarist, keyboardist and
singer. Phillips has scored music for several television
productions, and advertising campaigns. He has produced other
artists.

SANJIVA:
"THE JOURNEY"
Ninetysix Sounds
This is the first album by Sanjiva for Ninetysix Sounds. His style
has been defined as electronic ambient, but also as psychedelic
trance. He certainly uses electronic sounds for his compositions:
the music is meditative and atmospheric, full of energy. Sanjiva,
after many years of composing music for theatre and art
performances in Montreal, decided in 1986 to move to India. There,
he was with Osho, the Master of Zen. Exploring the use of music in
healing, he composed 24 albums for the Tibetan Pulsing Healing
Institute and also several more for Zen meditation. The Journey is
his first CD for a new personal epoch. It was first released in
1995/1996.
VICTOR ARENAS

SANJIVA:
"ORIGIN"
Ninetysix Sounds
The second album by Sanjiva for Ninetysix Sounds is a powerful
voyage to rhythm and sequences. It contains much less “meditation”
than the previous one but the atmospheres are yet here. If you
like the electronic analog sounds from the seventies, this one is
for you. The energetic sequences are complex and futuristic, and
they’ll probably make you dance in more than one occasion. A
really good work by Sanjiva.
VICTOR ARENAS

SANJIVA:
"ESSENCE"
Ninetysix Sounds
This is the third album that Sanjiva has composed for Ninetysix
Sounds. It contains 4 long tracks and it represents a relative
departure from what the Canadian artist has done in previous
works. Here he uses the electronic sounds of the 90s: the result
is fun music, trance music which will be of much interest to many
new listeners. Anyway, it also have some traces of excellent
ambient, synth-pop and other old and modern currents of electronic
music.
VICTOR ARENAS

SANJIVA:
"INITIATION"
Ninetysix Sounds
The fourth album composed by Sanjiva for Ninetysix Sounds contains
5 tracks. All of them are very impressive pieces of electronic
music, themes with deep roots in the German space music of the
70s. If you like Tangerine Dream or Klaus Schulze, you will also
like this stuff. The textures are diverse: electronic sequences,
slow and fast percussive rhythms, relaxed atmospheres... As
always, Sanjiva tries to translate into music the lessons given by
Osho, his Master of Zen.
VICTOR ARENAS

SANJIVA:
"RADIANCE"
Ninetysix Sounds
Radiance is the latest album by Sanjiva. It has been published by
Ninetysix Sounds and is a new demonstration of this author’s
electronic ambient style. The CD contains 5 long tracks. The
Canadian musician has composed a product which can be perfectly
useful for relaxation: the cosmic textures and the diverse palette
of electronic sounds are a really pleasing and highly listenable
mixture. 57 minutes of intense and hypnotic music provided by a
master of synths.
VICTOR ARENAS

DREAMS IN EXILE:
"SINCE LONG BEFORE"
Dreams in Exile
This is the first full length CD by Dreams in Exile, a duo from
Portland, Oregon. They are still searching for a record company,
but what we have heard in this sample album suggests that they’ll
probably be successful very soon. The CD contains 12 good themes:
the music is mainly electronic but there also guitars and voices.
The Belgian artist Vidna Obmana has contributed with ambient
textures so the mood is very atmospheric and pleasant. The people
of Dreams in Exile have ideas and inspiration. Since Long Before
is a good beginning and we hope to seen them in the circuit as
soon as possible.
MANUEL MONTES

AUDIOASIS:
"AUDIOASIS"
Audioasis
This is the debut album by Audioasis, an Australian duo (Peter
Beeby and Shaun Pilkinton) very interested in improvisations and
changing soundscapes. The 8 pieces where recorded on 1995. With
them, they show us that improvisation don’t mean monotony. In
fact, Beeby (keyboards, sax, guitar) and Pilkinton (guitars, bass)
offer a great variety of styles, including blues, Celtic, new age,
cosmic music, and so on. The evolving melodies are slow and very
pleasant: you will want to hear them many, many times. Shaun and
Peter have played together in several bands. They have toured with
people like B.B. King or Deep Purple and with bands like Cosmic
Desert and Iron Horse, so they have about 15 years of experience.
Audioasis is their new project.
MANUEL MONTES

SERGE BLENNER:
"ARS ORATORIA"
MdeC Editions
This album is a good example of the excellent imagination of Serge
Blenner. His music is characterized by a great diversity of ideas
and emotions. From the precise instant of the beginning of the
album, we witness a display of creative, sonic energy of a high
degree. In his very personal style, the artist takes us through a
voyage to amazing worlds, full of emotions and adventures. During
the 21 themes that constitute this release, we can perceive
elements of Classical Music, Ambient, Space, World Music, and
others from different origins. The pieces are very innovative and
complex, yet at the same time they are easy to listen to.
EDGAR KOGLER

SERGE BLENNER
Blenner was born in France in 1955, he began to compose electronic
music by the mid seventies, and started his recording career in
1979. He lives and works in Germany since several years ago.
Essential recordings:
-LA VOGUE
-MAGAZIN FRIVOLE

ALX:
"LYING AT THE BASS OF THE SPINE"
Ninetysix Sounds
This release has a style approaching the Trance trends. It also
shows a Space or Ambient character, yet one being mostly linked to
the rhythmic aspect of these trends. The music is not static, but
it flows at a medium speed. The rhythmic structure is mostly based
on the percussion, though the sequencers are also present and even
come to have a leading role in different parts of the work. More
than concrete melodies in the traditional sense, there are melodic
atmospheres that come and go, thus contributing to weaving an
unreal, nocturnal, oneiric environment, as if taken from a dream.
EDGAR KOGLER

LLEWELLYN / ANN CLINTON:
"CRYSTALS"
New World Music (The Mind Body Soul series)
In autumn 1998, New World Music launched the "Mind, Body & Soul"
series, a unique collection of specially commissioned music and
sleeve notes about specific special subjects. The detailed sleeve
notes, specially written for these recordings, include background
information on each subject by an expert or teacher. The recording
itself serves as an accompaniment to the subject. The first five
titles in the series are about these topics: Reiki, Shiatsu, Yoga,
Feng Shui, Tai Chi. This CD, the sixth release, features "Crystal
Healing and Relaxation". Ann Clinton has written the sleeve notes.
Llewellyn has composed and performed the music. The general style
of the work can be described as electronic New Age music. Some
themes or passages are near to New Instrumental Music. Others
present connections with atmospheric Pop. Others have clear Space
traits. Using the synthesizers in a warm way, Llewellyn creates an
intimate atmosphere, full of romantic melodies.

DETLEF KELLER & MARIO SCHONWALDER:
"THE TWO PIECE BOX"
Manikin
This work is divided into two long pieces. Part One ("Another
Temptation") is composed, performed, recorded and produced by
Detlef Keller. Part two ("The Quiet Room - Final Mix") is
composed, performed, recorded and produced by Mario Schonwalder.
Although the two musicians possess their own style each, the
general structure of the album is connected to electronic music of
the Berlin School. That is to say, their music, even if it has
their own personal imprint, will appeal to those who enjoy long
passages dominated by complex sequencers, dreamy melodies and
unearthly environments. The structure of the two pieces is very
rhythmic. In many passages, the rhythm assumes the role of melody,
in the shape of hypnotic sequences that keep oscillating around a
determined basis. The whole album has a strong cosmic air, not
only due to the use of synthesizers, but also because of the style
of the compositions itself.
EDGAR KOGLER

PLANET:
"FORGED BY FIRE"
Separate Branches Publishing
The style of this album fluctuates among the various areas of
Alternative Rock, in a melodic line that includes some Pop traits.
Some brief passages consist in sonic collages. Of an impeccable
make (the album has been very well produced and recorded), this is
a release that will surely be liked by a wide range of Pop
listeners.
DEREK DOARN

FINGERPAINT:
"IN THE LOOP"
FNGP
Patrick Smith and Steev Geest, the two composers that integrate
this duet, make an unusual music, sometimes dark, some other times
of a more conventional Ambient hue, yet always with a remarkable
dose of imagination. In an atmosphere full of strange electronic
textures, elements of sonic collage, and occasional cybernetic
rhythms, a series of pieces that flow among the most innovative
Ambient, the Industrial and the Psychedelic are built, besides
reaching futuristic styles difficult to classify.
