REVIEWS:

SANTE:
"INTO LIGHT"
Santé Music
This album is a superb symphony full of melody and emotion, worked
with the craftmanship of a genius. The music, based on the skilled
handling of the synthesizers, turns out to be brilliant, vital,
warm. There are romantic passages, others thrust the listener into
the dephts of the universe, as well as others displaying a
somewhat darker atmosphere. Stephanie Santé possesses a special
sensitiviy to make electronic music that happens to be warm,
vital. Listening to it, the listeners may sense the breath of the
instruments on their faces, as if these had a life of their own
and spoke through the music. This one, the first work by Santé,
already shows an admirable maturity, and it can be stated that
this woman will harvest a great deal of success in the future,
since her talent is well proved throughout the entire CD. "Into
light" will appeal both to the followers of Cosmic Music and to
those of the New Instrumental Music, as it gathers truly inspired
artistic ideas that flow between those two musical trends.

FANGER & KERSTEN:
"INTERKOSMOS"
Manikin Records
With a title that refers to the Russian space program and its
golden age in the seventies, this CD presents an electronic music
of a clear cosmic nature, with elements from the purest German
Techno, certain touches of Symphonic Rock and traits typical of
the trend known as the Berlin School. Yet this is not a simple
remembrance of the trends that were shaped in the seventies, but
rather the music is obviously contemporary, modern, fresh. The
tracks are created by means of sequencer rhythms, percussion,
extraterrestrial atmospheres and melodies that range from the
mysterious to the heavenly. An album full of strong emotions that
will no doubt fascinate the followers of electronic music in its
most radical side.
EDGAR KOGLER

CHRIS ZIPPEL:
"GENUINE NU AMBIENT GOOVES"
Ninetysix Sounds
In this work, synthesist Chris Zippel offers us a journey through
his particular vision of Ambient music. His is a dynamic Ambient,
based more on rhythms rather than fixed landscapes, where the
color is given by the choirs of synthesizers sounding in unison.
The music by this artist is also nourished by some of the
characteristic traits of the Cosmic Music of the seventies, as
well as those from the Techno of the eighties and the Trance of
the nineties, yet even so, all this without the basic focus losing
any protagonism. An interesting musical experience for those
listeners seeking new sensations.
EDGAR KOGLER

Sampler:
"UNSETTLED SCORES"
Cuneiform Records
This is an attractive sampler by Cuneiform Records. Instead of
gathering themes from different artists coming from albums
released by the label, or collect previously unreleased
compositions by them, each artist has done a version of some theme
by another one. Thus, we have the artists in Cuneiform performing
one another. These are not simple performances, more or less
adapted to the particular abilities of each one with the musical
instruments, but rather very personal versions that in some cases
have little in common with the original compositions. Next, the
artists and bands taking part and the themes they play: Forever
Einstein: "The true wheelbase / Coco Boudakian". Kit Watkins /
Coco Roussel: "Hobart got burned". Doctor Zero: "Onde
crepusculaire". Peter Frohmader: "Ubik". Piero Milesi: "Enfield in
summer". Philharmonie: "Transsibérien". Hugh Hopper: "Unna".
Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic: "A moral dilemma for our times".
Miriodor: "Promenade sous zero". Phil Miller: "Meccano Pelorus".
Henry Kaiser and Friends: "The March". Happy Family: "Bulgarian
flying spirit dances". Djam Karet: "Dedicated to K.C." Present
C.O.D. Performance: "Pain waits till 5PM". Richard Pinhas / John
Livengood: "They walk among us". David Borden: "Miniluv". Volapuk:
"Three curiously insubstantial duets - No. III". Rattlemouth:
"Summer walk". PFS: "Piege". George Cartwright: "Complainte".U
Totem: "Carousel, dedicated to Hugh". Virgil Moorefield: "Get
moose and squirrel". The Muffins: "She wears her dead mother's
hat". Forrest Fang: "Scene of the madmen". C.W. Vrtacek: "Dyed"

LUIS ALBERTO NARANJO:
"WALKING ON NATURE"
Blue Project Musica
Treading paths more acoustic than in his previous works, Luis
Alberto Naranjo allows us to perceive love in its multiple and
complex dimensions; warmth and intimacy, strength and sensitivity.
For this, we assist to the imperious and perfect compenetration of
saxo and piano in the melodies, as well as bass sounds and
electronic pads, in the function of giving a better strength to
the themes. As a result, an intimate, placid album that succeeds
in the objective expressed by its author on the back cover: to
reflect the stresses in the life of a couple.
LAURA S. GARCÍA

ALAIN PIÑERO:
"PRANKS!"
Sonifolk
Alain Piñero has been developing an interesting musical career,
even though he has been disconnected from musical composition for
some time. He is one of the artists that take greater risks in the
panorama of the New Musics in Spain. His music has evolved in this
album, growing in shades and explored directions. As if on an
unknown continent, the album shows second by second sound
surprises. It is not only electroacoustic experimentation, but
also the imaginative atmospheres and the unusual melodies
constitute per se a true adventure of discoveries. Piñero is a
creative mind functioning regardless of many conventionalisms upon
which a great deal of the electronic music done nowadays anchors
itself quite often. His use of the electric guitar is also
something to listen to attentively.
EDGAR KOGLER

DETLEF KELLER:
"BEHIND THE TEARS"
Manikin Records
The 8 "tears" this quest along the different states that cause
them consists of, come with some air from Vangelis, obvious in the
majestic string sounds; at the same time, it reminds us of the
Tangerine Dream from the era Schmoelling, most precisely in the
structural complexity of its three long themes. The other five
tracks, briefer and simpler in their development, contribute
globally to an album that distills melancholy and emotivity, yet
with a constant tendency to turn sadness into a breath of hope.
LAURA S. GARCÍA

PETER FROHMADER & RICHARD PINHAS:
"FOSSIL CULTURE"
Cuneiform Records
This album gathers an event of maximum interest: the encounter
between two of the best composers in the European avantgarde. On
the one hand, musician and painter Peter Frohmader, a shaper of
dark mythologies and cosmic nightmares. On the other hand, Richard
Pinhas, the leader of the French band Heldon, who during 1974-78
shaped in various LPs a singular musical universe sited between
electronic music and Rock. The result of the collaboration between
these two giants with such complex, rich personal artistic
histories, cannot leave anyone indifferent. From the melodies to
the rhythms, everything that sounds in this album responds to a
constellation of impressive ideas. As the title suggest, the
audition of this CD is as if one were immersed in archaeology on
the ruins of a disquieting, fascinating civilization, created from
the imagination of the musicians.

EDWARD ARTEMIEV:
"SOLARIS, THE MIRROR, STALKER"
Electroshock Records
The re-release of this classic of electronic music is a true
event. Russian composer Edward Artemiev, a pioneer among pioneers
and a giant of the musical avantgarde far longer than the
creativity of many composers tends to last, composed three
memorable soundtracks for equally legendary movies: "Solaris"
(1972), "The Mirror" (1975) and "Stalker" (1979). In them he set
all his imagination to weave sound universes as disquieting as the
plots of these films. Science-fiction in the most remote, most
mysterious, most dreadful and at the same time most attractive of
its shores, resides in all its splendor within this collection of
tracks, complemented with a theme composed by Edward Artemiev in
1989 as a homage to movie-maker Andrei Tarkovsky, deceased in
1986, for whom he wrote the movie soundtracks gathered in this CD.

BRIAN ENO:
"SONORA PORTRAITS NO. 1" (CD + BOOK)
Materiali Sonori / Auditorium
An interesting release of a CD accompanied by a book, all within
one box. The CD gathers pieces from "Music For Film III",
"Spinner", "The Drop" and some rarities, besides Eno himself
commenting on some questions referring to his music in a recording
of six minutes. The book, of the same size as a CD and 96 pages,
contains essays on Brian Eno (In Italian and also English), as
well as photographs. This is a very well designed release that
will please Brian Eno's followers and that can also be ideal for
those who are not very familiar with Eno's career and wish to
contact his music and his artistic ideas.

ROEDELIUS:
"PINK, BLUE AND AMBER"
Prudence / BSC Music
This is an album of collaborations among Hans-Joachim Roedelius
and various artists, which constitutes an interesting artistic
experience by combining the styles of each one with the usual
surprising and imaginative creativity that Roedelius displays
every time he records anything. The pieces range from Ambient to
New Instrumental Music, with subtle approximations to other
currents, although always from a terrain dominated by the
synthesizers and the magic sound textures. Of the total of ten
themes, five were released in 1985 and the rest later. The
artists that collaborate with Roedelius in this album are: Eric
Spitzer-Marlyn, Yuko Matsuzaki, Felix Jay, Stephan Steiner, Laszlo
Ramhorst, Fabio Capanni, Gini Ball, Tony Morley, Alexander Czjzek,
Dominique Greenberg, Nicola Alesini.

ZINKL:
"CIRCUS MAXIMUS"
Prudence / BSC Music
Like a circus performance dominated by the acts of magicians,
bullet-men and other singular, mysterious characters, this album
illustrates its title as it offers a collection of tracks with a
variety of focuses yet with the common characteristic of
attracting the attention of the listener from its first instants.
Each piece portrays a performance or a circus character, as shown
in the titles and as is obvious in the peculiar construction of
each theme. Using very different sound textures, yet always under
the cover of a wide use of electronics, Zinkl weaves mysterious
melodies and disquieting environments that appear to reflect this
fascination that the most risky of performances and the strangest
characters have always created in the world of the circus.

AGITATION FREE:
"RIVER OF RETURN"
Prudence / BSC Music
This CD marhs an extraordinary reunion of artists. twenty-five
years after their splitting up, the main members of the German
band Agitation Free cane together to join their creative efforts
and the result is this album, which has been produced by Potsch
Potschka, who also performs as a guest musician. Before they split
up in 1974, this band succeeded in getting a most noteworthy post
in the musical avantgarde. The band included musicians of a great
charisma such as for example Christopher Franke. The style that
the current members of Agitation Free (Lutz Ulbrich, Michael
Gunther, Burghard Rausch and Gustl Lutiens) display maintains up
to some extent the original spirit of the band, yet obviously
incorporating modern features. Their current music is a
combination of Progressive Rock and New Instrumental Music, with
touches of Jazz and passagea dedicated to an experimentation near
to Ambient.

ARTEMIY ARTEMIEV:
"MYSTICISM OF SOUND"
Electroshock Records
This album by the synthesist and author of movie soundtracks
Artemiy Artemiev is a window through which the listener can view a
colossal abyss, an abyss inhabited by mythical beigns, at the same
time fascinating and dreadful, present under the guise of multiple
sonic constructions that emanate from the synthesizers of
Artemiev. The most impressive piece is probably "Cataclysms of the
XX Century", whose title already suggests its bleak character,
evoking of devastation in all its might. Yet the most dreadfully
wondrous moment of the entire album are the first thirty seconds
of "Mysticism of sound Part 1", which succeed in merging mystery
and beauty in as an attractive melody as it is dreary, a sort of
siren's song that becomes a bridge between our world and the
Kingdom of Death.
JORGE MUNNSHE

LARRY KUCHARZ:
"DIGITAL BLUE PORTRAITS"
International Audiochrome
Music becomes bare of all ornament for 67 minutes, from the
minimal of rhythms to half-shaped melody. The minimalism of its
nine tracks maximizes nevertheless the loneliness of the audience,
thanks to the endless sucession of electronic couches. No doubt,
this compilation of Larry Kucharz's works constitutes an
interesting release for the lovers of the most experimental brand
of music, yet it may also appeal an audience ready to travel
through desert landscapes, be it icy ones or ardent ones, as
suggested by the continuous notes, in their austerity.
LAURA S. GARCÍA

Sampler:
"ELECTROACOUSTIC MUSIC VOLUME 3"
Electroshock Records
In this sampler of electroacoustic music by the Russian label
Electroshock Records we find a varied display of composers coming
from several countries that, unlike what happens with samplers
from other labels, are not artists exclusively devoted to this
kinf of music but who rather follow much wider careers within
electronic music. These are the contents of this CD: Richard
Boone: "Elusia, I can see!". John Palmer: "Epitaph". Martin
Alejandro Fumarola: "Shaguir". Pete Stollery: "Onset/Offset".
Rudiger Gleisberg: "African Moods". Alejandro Iglesias-Rossi:
"Angelus". Hans-Joachim Roedelius: "Message from the ivory tower".
The sound and music experimentation is what dominates in most
pieces, although there are exceptions such as for instance the
piece by Gleisberg, of a more melodic character, as well as that
by Roedelius, quite eclectic and with intense Cosmic leaps.
EDGAR KOGLER

Sampler:
"SYNTHESIZER ANS 1964-1971 (ELECTROACOUSTIC MUSIC VOLUME 3)
Electroshock Records
This album gahters a fascinating collection of pioneering
recordings of electronic music, coming from composers from Russia
and other former states of the ex-USSR. These visionary musicians
were capable of taking advantage of the possibilities of the
legendary ANS Russian synthesizer, developed by Eugene Murzin
during 1937-1957. The ANS was designed not only to be played, but
also to store notes and reproduce them later. The system of
automatic reproduction was based on a vertical keyboard activated
by an electromechanical device. The most important musician in the
performing with the ANS was Edward Artemiev, the pioneer of
electronic music in Russia, who utilized this admirable device to
create some of his most memorable works, The recordings in this
album, released in the mid-sixties and early seventies, but
remastered due to the release of this CD in 1999, include the
works of the following artists: Edward Artemiev, Sofia
Gubaidulina, Alfred Schnittke, Oleg Buloshkin, Edison Denisov,
Alexander Nemtin, Schandor Kallosh, and Stanislaw Kreitchi. The
music is certainly disquieting, full of sepulchral, nocturnal,
icy-cold environments.
JORGE MUNNSHE

JOHN TAVENER:
"ETERNITY'S SUNRISE"
Harmonia Mundi
This album gathers several works composed by John Tavener and
performed by the choir and orchestra of the Academy of Antique
Music conducted by Paul Goodwin. The track opening the album and
giving it its title was commissioned by the Academy to commemorate
its first twenty-five years of functioning, having been premiered
in 1998. The other compositions are: "Song of the Angel" (1995),
"Petra: a ritual dream" (1996), "Sappho: lyrical fragments" (1981)
and "Funeral canticle" (1996), which Tavener wrote as a homage to
his father, at his death. The music, with a Classical shape yet
dominated by the personal style of its author, possesses a great
strength. It is emotional and ranges from melancholy to mystery,
maintaining at all times a great wealth of shades. Here no doubt
the merits of the performers can be appreciated, especially
soprano Patricia Rozario, whose ethereal voice, modulated softly,
slowly, enhances the mysterious, dreamy nature of the music.

CARLOS VASO:
"INNOVATE"
Happy Sound
A nice surprise this first album wholly solo by Carlos García-
Vaso, a pioneer of Techno in Spain, and a firm supporter of
electronic music, known as a member of the legendary duo Azul y
Negro. This is one of these albums that serve as an example that
the electronic instruments can sound even warmer than the acoustic
ones if the one playing them is skilled in the medium and besides
creates music from his feelings and emotions, not from commercial
requirements. As a general premise, the themes tend to combine
melodies of great emotional strength with impressive sequencer
rhythms, all that maintaining the result within the likes of a
wide sector of the audience, just like Azul y Negro succeeded in
doing, something that undoubtedly always constitutes a hardly
attainable feat.
