NEWS

Paul Winter's latest album, CELTIC SOLSTICE, has received the
Grammy Award as Best New Age Album of 1999. In the year in which
Winter's Living Music label celebrates its 20th birthday, the
Award comes as a significant recognition, and represents the
label's 4th Grammy-winning album and its 10th Grammy nominee.

The world music band Guarana will give a series of performances
with La Fura dels Baus, at the Expo 2000 in Hannover, Germany
(June-July).

Guarana is formed by Antonio Sanchez, Xavi Tasies, Aleix Tobias,
Tito Busquets, Marc Vila, and Xavi Lozano. The style of the music
that Guarana has composed for this first CD can be placed within
World Music, with the Latin and African elements as the most
audible characteristic, as well as including traits typical of
Jazz. The compositions have a lively rhythm. The rhythmic
structure of the music is based on the percussion. The musicians
deal with, not mere folklore, but innovative rhythmic-melodic
pieces, while taking advantage of the expression channels of the
instruments available to them, furthermore surpassing cultural
barriers. The artists combine their respective musical influences
very well, thus achieving that their music possesses a very
imaginative personality, capable of attracting the attention of
the listener at once. Of an impeccable make (the album has been
very well produced and recorded), this is a release that will
surely be liked by a wide range of listeners, and which no doubt
will contribute to increasing the reputation of the group.

The style of Guarana is framed within World Music. The band has
succeeded in doing something which is not that easy at all:
exploring the paths of the ethnic musics with surprising
imagination, while at the same time making fresh, nice and vital
music, capable of reaching a very wide audience. Guarana have an
impressive style when performing live, with a very rich,
expressive percussion, a careful setting and a perfect
understanding among all the musicians. All these perspectives,
supported by the successes achieved so far and the commissions
that in the mid and long term are being developed, have an open

interested in or curious about them, so as to offer the audience
images, sound clips and other illustrative contents on their
activities.

Guarana intend to spread their artistic activity into a wide
range, given their onstage possibilities, the instrumental wealth,
the varied, peculiar orchestration, the educational possibilities,
the different formats they can display in their repertoire (normal
concerts, reduced instrumentation, open air popular events...) and
their availability to partake in collaborations for the release of
music albums together with other artists, as well as to offer a
wide range of productions such as sound samples and orchestrations
of rhythmic sections for the recording industry as well as for
computer applications, among many other musical activities.

The productions where Guarana have collaborated with, before
giving live performances, are: The Manolo (Unreleased); Marc
Martinez ("el Bolero del Raval"), Carles Beltran, Jazz el
Destripador (Hello Ñandú). Having recorded their first release
"Guarana" (recorded live at the Teatre Principal of Badalona,
Spain), they have recently collaborated with their percussions in
the soundtrack for the movie "Sexo por compasion" by Laura Maña,
composed by Kiko Gener.

Guarana consists of six multi-instrumentist musicians each with a
long career full of collaborations in very different musical
styles:

Antonio Sanchez. Collaborations with the cinema, radio and
television. He has taught music lessons, workshops and specialized
courses in different schools, colleges and universities. He has
likewise performed in festivals in London, Scotland, France,
Switzerland, Spain and Egypt, and has collaborated with Regina dos
Santos, Santi Arisa, Lorenzo Santamaría as well as many other
artists.

Xavi Tasies. His musical background was partially developed in
Brazil. He has given seminars on Afro-Cuban percussion. He has
also been a member of or collaborated with several bands and
artists such as Electrica Dharma, Lucrecia, Laura Simo Sextet,
Monica Green, Rebeldes, and many others.

Aleix Tobias. His musical background was partially developed in
Senegal and Gambia. He has performed in festivals from Spain,
Great Britain and Egypt. Among his performances mention must be
made of those he has performed with Comediants, Rebeldes, Garala
Mosala, and Toc Mut, besides many others.

Tito Busquets. A co-founder member of the band Amordiscos, with
whom he has released several albums, he has collaborated with
various bands and artists from different fields, such as for
instance Jazz el Destripador, Baloo, Ivette Matos, Misael da Hora,
Comediants, la Tribu de Santi Arisa, Gabriel Sopeña and Guapacha
Combo.

Marc Vila. He has performed in festivals in France and Spain,
among others. He has also collaborated with Mark Parrot, Los
Rebeldes, Xavier Maristany, Dani Nel-lo, la Banda del Zoco, Jazz
el Destripador, and many other artists and bands.

Xavi Lozano. His musical background was partially developed in
India. He is a member of the band Companyia Electrica Dharma, Toc
Mut, la Cobla de Cambra de Catalunya and la Cobla Sant Jordi
Ciutat de Barcelona, having performed in Europe and the United
States as well. Among his collaborations with other artists, most
remarkable are the ones with Eliseo Parra and with Nacho Ugarte.

TURK KNIFES POPE:
"PERFORMANCE CLIPPLING DATA RESTRICTION"
Zenflesh
A work consisting of an only theme lasting over sixty minutes,
filled with chaotic, cosmic atmospheres, whose disorder, at least
apparently, tends to create a disturbing, panicking sensation,
enhancing any state of loneliness or making human presence more
suffocating. A music that, like most of that produced by the label
Zenflesh, is aimed at a very concrete audience, able to understand
it. An understanding, no doubt, having its foundations on an
unprejudiced hearing.

HUAMAN:
"EL ARPA ANDINA"
The Cover Masters
In this album the fans of ethnic music will find an innovative,
certainly attractive compilation of well known traditional Andean
melodies together with other compositions by outstanding authors,
wonderfully performed by Jesús Huamán playing the Andean harp,
with the support of Carlos G.-Vaso, who has likewise produced this
CD, at the synthesizers, percussion and sound effects of an
unparalelled quality. In all, eleven tracks that with their
uplifting, soft harmonic textures, constitute an album that makes
it a magnificient sample of anti-stress music, besides being aimed
at a wide audience, while at the same time it takes the listener
to a world of relaxing, positive experiences.

VICTOR CERULLO:
"LUDUS"
Groove
This album, divided into three parts or episodes by the author,
consists in a musical narration of a very free nature, inspired by
Hermann Hesse's work, "Das Glasperlenspiel" ("The Game of the
Glass Pearls"). The music, of a cosmic character, occasionally
portraying certain traits near to pop, is no doubt suggestive,
attractive and in some passages includes mysterious, dark touches,
which take the listener to strange, imaginative soundscapes, in
some moments with psychedelic reminiscences. Cerullo displays a
superb skill with the instruments (KORG 01/W, KORG Polysix, Roland
R8 Rhythm Composer, E-MU Procussion), as well as an inspired
musical vision.

TERRY OLDFIELD:
"SPIRIT OF THE WORLD"
New World Music
In this album Terry Oldfield renders a heartfelt tribute to the
most ancient cultures in the world, a homage to a New Age built on
the roots that shaped our beliefs. From the Australian Aborigines
to the most traditional of African cultures, Terry weaves a
multiethnic tapestry where the musical traditions and spirituality
of the ancient peoples that founded our worldview are intertwined,
thus shaping an harmonious whole, where the Tibetan sounds, the
native American chants, the Cambodian melodies and the Greek
musical soul are skilfully merged, all this within the world of
New Instrumental Music. No doubt, an album to be included in the
collection of the fans of this musical genre.

TERRY OLDFIELD
Terry Oldfield, Mike's and Sally's brother, composes and plays the
flute since the early seventies. A great part of his work has
consisted in making movie soundtracks for television, some of
which have received awards and nominations, among them of the Emmy
Awards. He has also recorded several albums.

The 14 themes in this inspired album are a nice journey through
Celtic music up to the Scandinavian shores, specifically those of
the Norwegian village of Lillisand (which gives its title to the
album), homeland of the Vikings, who exported their music to the
British Isles, given the similarities between Celtic and
Scandinavian melodies. With some pop touches and their fusion with
classical and contemporary influences within New Instrumental
Music, romantic passages, exotic or dreamy sequences, at times
full of happiness, others evoking melancholy, Steve Schuch and the
Night Heron Consort give us a magnificient melodic landscape that
is a must in our collection.

Annbjorg Lien, a Norwegian composer, shows us in this album her
fascination for the musical and folk traditions from different
cultures, which she interweaves in an innovative way to create a

the one giving her name to the album being a well known character
in Russian myths. With passages almost touching the cosmic, others
of a more spiritual nature, even ritual ones, plus the occasional
vocal support of the author herself, the CD incorporates acoustic
and electronic elements in a skilled fusion of folk, Celtic,
ethnic, electronic and New Instrumental Music.

CONNIE DOVER:
"THE BORDER OF HEAVEN"

As Connie Dover says, this, her fourth solo album, is probably the
most acoustic of all. It was even recorded onto tape, an analogic
format that offers a warmth of sound that digital technology
sometimes doesn't show. And it is a good idea because in The
Border of Heaven, she explores the deep connections between Celtic
music and the American folk, a common territory where traditional
melodies and instruments are heard showing a special enchantment.
Dover, born in Arkansas, firmly believes that traditional American
music, like cowboy songs, has very old Celtic roots. The album,
then, contains a magnificent selection of 12 traditional American
folk songs, British ballads, etc., all produced by Phil
Cunningham. Connie sings, of course, and Cunningham plays piano,
accordion, keyboards, penny whistles and guitar. Other top
musicians appear in this album: Russ Barenburg, Bob Burns, John
Catchings, Jonny Cunningham, Jerry Douglas, Craig Duncan, Skip
Gorman, John Hartford, Roger Landes, Paddy League, Zan McLeod,
Jerry O'Sullivan, Dave Pomeroy and Arthur Shortbull, people from
both sides of the Atlantic. Good traditional music, an angelic
voice and a perfect sound.
