Lately, Carlos García-Vaso, best known above all because of his
belonging to the mythical duo Azul y Negro, is carrying out a
wonderful job in favor of independent music. Through his label
Vaso Music, he has released albums by various artists, mostly
within the sphere of the alternative musics, as well as other
genres. For instance, the album "Corazón Solitario" by David
Saludes, is a perfect sample of sung Synth-Pop, whose great
quality is especially due to the fact that the artist has really
reflected his feelings in the songs. As genuine and fresh as this
album is, likewise, the CD "Mil Pájaros" by Juan Mari Montes and
José María Casas, a careful collection of pieces that can be
labelled between the Rock ballad and a subtle mix of folklores.
In both CDs can also be appreciated the good wotk done by Carlos
G. Vaso on the recording and mixing, as well as on the
arrangements of "Corazón Solitario".

Pacific Moon Records is a label devoted to the Asian New
Instrumental Music. Their releases are most remarkable because of
the quality of the artists and their works. With a focus aimed at
a wide audience, the CDs of Pacific Moon Records will appeal to
those listeners who enjoy melodic music made by artists like, for
instance, famous composer Kitaro. And the fact is that, apart from
this well-known Japanese artist, many are the ones who today
create instrumental music of a great talent, in such genres as the
most melodic trends of New Age and the New Instrumental Music.
Some of the artists released by this label are: Jia Peng Fang,
Uttara-Kuru, Mizuyo Komiya, Jalan Jalan, and Naoyuki Onda.

The band Plastic Soul have shown a great creative energy with
their album "Channel Ninety-Two", released by the label
b:group/records. In this CD, the members of Plastic Soul are
revealed as important renewers of Pop. New, fresh surprises are
surely to be expected from them.

REVIEWS:

JEAN MICHEL JARRE:
"METAMORPHOSES"
Disques Dreyfus / Epic / Sony Music
In this album, Jarre has gone towards Atmospheric Pop. Throughout
twelve themes, we hear melodies that range from the warm to the
mysterious, wrapped in ethereal ambiences, somewhat relaxed
percussive rhythms, and some sound effects that constitute small
experimental brush-strokes. The vocals, as a general rule female
and ethereal, are an important element in this CD. In some pieces
they appear as part of the atmosphere, whereas in others they
adopt a formal soloist role. The lyrics of the songs have been
written by Jarre. The album will no doubt appeal to those
listeners who feel attracted to such styles as that of Enigma, as
well as Atmospheric Pop in general. As to my personal taste, the
most impressive moments of this work are the last part of "Gloria,
lonely boy", the beginning of "Millions of Stars", and the
instrumental solos of "Tout est Bleu", among others.

JEAN MICHEL JARRE
The synthesist and composer Jean Michel Jarre began his career as
an electronic musician in 1969. Until the mid '70s he composed
movie soundtracks, he made works of production for pop musicians,
gave some concerts, and also released some records. However, it
was in 1976 when he initiated his most successful artistic stage,
as he published the first of his independent albums as a
synthesist: Oxygene. Jarre is as well known because of his
concerts as because of his records. His macroperformances with
music, images and special effects have come to gather audiences of
more than a million people.

KLAUS SCHULZE:
"TRAILER"
Manikin / Klaus D. Mueller / P.O.E.M. Musikverlag
This CD compiles extracts from various pieces by the well-known
synthesist recorded in the last quarter of the twentieth century,
though with a dominance of the material of the seventies. Besides
its artistic value, it also has an unarguable importance as a
firsthand sound witness in the history of electronic music. The
peculiar style of Schulze's can be perceived in its varied facets
throughout this journey. The CD also is a sample of the pack of 50
CDs "Klaus Schulze: The Ultimate Edition", since much of the music
of "Trailer" appears in that pack.

THOMAS FANGER & MICHAEL KERSTEN (MIND-FLUX):
"MIND-FLUX, COLLECTOR'S EDITION 1"
Starflux Music / Manikin Records
This selection of pieces that spreads throughout the period 1995-
1999, besides including two unreleased themes, constitutes an
excellent CD summary for an interesting trajectory that has moved
within the most powerful and electronic area of Techno.Actually,
in numerous passages, the frontier between this genre and Space
Sequencer Music disappears. Rhythm is a constant throughout the
twelve compositions that constitute the album. Yet it is
accompanied by melodies brimming with excitement and mystery,
which enhance the nature of adventure the CD possesses. Fanger and
Kersten achieve all this by maintaining a musical structure that
connects with a wide audience, and which besides turns out to be
apt for dancing in most cases.
JORGE MUNNSHE

Sampler:
"THE BEST OF MANIKIN RECORDS"
Manikin
Just like its name says, this sampler gathers compositions
extracted from albums by various artists, released by the label
Manikin, specialized in Space Music near to the trend known as the
"Berlin School". The contents are as follows: Fanger & Kersten:
"New Times" (CD "Interkosmos"), Rainbow Serpent: "Pulse
Transmission Part 5" (CD "Pulse"), Keller & Schonwalder: "Rho
Choronae Borealis" (Excerpt) (CD "More Loops"), Detlef Keller:
"Tear 4" (CD "Behind the tears"), Ramp: "Phasenverzerrung"
(excerpt) (CD "Nodular"), Arcanum: "Timehunter" (CD "Man in the
mirror"), Broekhuis, Keller, Schonwalder & friends: "Ghost in the
machine/731" (excerpt) (CD "The Annazaal tapes"), Spyra: "Future
of the Past" (excerpt) (CD "Future of the Past"), Rolf Trostel:
"New Age of Intelligence" (CD "Recall Level"), Steve Hug:
"Timespace Victory" (CD "Organics").
EDGAR KOGLER

STEVE HUG:
"ORGANICS"
Manikin
Inspired by the phenomenon of life and its evolution, this
composer has created a series of electronic pieces that, surfing
along Space Sequencer Music, Techno, Trance and Ambient, are based
on textures of sound which are warm, liquid, "alive", rather than
metallic, hard and icy as it tends to be usual in several Space
albums. Thus, instead of narrating cybernetic adventures, Hug
thrusts us into a history of evolution where the limitations of
life are overcome, and biological matter initiates a cosmic epic,
just like the cover paintings, created by Steve and Eva Hug
suggest.
EDGAR KOGLER

BROEKHUIS, KELLER, SCHONWALDER & FRIENDS:
"THE ANNAZAAL TAPES"
Manikin
Recorded live during a concert in the Netherlands, the pieces that
constitute this album are very much a homage to the adventurous
spirit that characterized the musical creativity of the
synthesists in those times when they only had analogic equipments
available to them. The tape that appears on the cover of the album
seems to symbolize this concept. The music, of a Space style,
based on the use of powerful sequencer rhythms and stormy
atmospheres, evokes the analogic machinery in its unending quest
for universes of sound and metaphysical experiences. The cosmic
mysticism of such themes as for instance "Shapes" or "Speed", is
impressive indeed.
EDGAR KOGLER

RAINBOW SERPENT:
"PULSE"
Manikin
Throughout 78 minutes of music, Rainbow Serpent project vivid
unearthly sensations, thrusth out by hard sequencer rhythms,
dreamy melodies and magical atmospheres. The strong connection of
their music with the trend known as the "Berlin School" will
appeal to the followers of this genre, yet at the same time, the
plentiful traits of Trance present as well, make this CD available
to a much wider potential audience. All in all, a fresh, dynamic
work that is easy to listen to.
EDGAR KOGLER

UNIVERS ZERO:
"THE HARD QUEST"
Cuneiform Records
This is the first album after thirteen years of the band Univers
Zero. Founded in 1974, they achieved a wonderful success in the
eighties as one of the pioneers of the musical avantgarde in
terrains seldom if ever trodden by other artists. After their
separation in 1987, the success of the band continued to grow. Up
to such a point their records have continued to be sold, and the
numbers of fans has likewise been increasing, that Daniel Denis,
the founder and main leader of the band has ended up by
reactivating his band. In this first album of the new stage in
their career, we encounter once again, partially, the sound of the
first album of the band ("1313") complemented with other elements
that characterized their evolution. The music by Univers Zero is
impressive in its perfect fusion of Rock and Classical Music.

UNIVERS ZERO:
"1313"
Cuneiform Records
Medieval Rock would be a good label for this record of the band
Univers Zero. Originally produced in 1977, it marked the
beginnings of a peculiar manner of making music, an original,
disquieting style that was to be better accepted years later
rather than at that moment. Like every avantgarde work, in its
creation there was a high dose of risk. With elements typical of
the most experimental trends of Chamber Music, as well as certain
traits of Jazz, the themes in "1313" are remarkable given their
timeless nature, as well as their deep and often somewhat bleak
character.

UNIVERS ZERO:
"CEUX DU DEHORS"
Cuneiform Records
Originally released in 1981, this album of Univers Zero, a
legendary band of experimental Rock, continues to surprise the
listener given its unusual nature, transgressor of
conventionalisms and frontiers among genres. By uniting the
rhythmic strength of Rock with melodic structures typical of the
most daring trends of Chamber Music, Univers Zero re-create a
peculiar world, with eerie yet wondrous landscapes, as well as
zones of anguish and darkness. The presence of psychedelic
elements enhances the magical atmosphere that can be felt
throughout the entire album.

UNIVERS ZERO:
"HEAT WAVE"
Cuneiform Records
Univers Zero, one of the most legendary bands of experimental
Rock, take us with this album originally released in 1986, towards
bleak territories where night is always present. The structure of
this peculiar musical style combines masterfully the darkest side
of Classical Music with the most psychedelic trends of Rock. The
result could become the soundtrack for a thriller or a terror
movie. Univers Zero draw with energic brush-strokes a stage to let
imagination run free towards life-and-death situations.

DANIEL DENIS:
"LES EAUX TROUBLES"
Cuneiform Records
This album, originally recorded in 1993, shows us Daniel Denis,
the leader of the experimental rock band Univers Zero, working
solo, several years after the separation of his band, and after
having already created another album. Starting from a structure
near to Psychedelic Rock, with intense bleak traits, the author
embarks on a journey through the dark frontier between Rock and
Classical Music. The electronic textures that appear in certain
passages, and the percussion, violent as well as transcendental,
provide many of the compositions with an apocalyptic atmosphere..

ERIK M:
"FRAME"
Metamkine
This mini-CD, whose running time is 18 minutes, is one of the
releases in the collection of Concrete Music "Cinema pour
l'oreille" of the association Metamkine. In the four pieces that
constitute the album, Erik M. enters stormy oceans of
experimentation with electronic noises, alternating with
progressive waves or sudden bursts of sound together with
expectant silences.
DOMINIQUE CHEVANT

PETER FROHMADER:
"CYCLE OF ETERNITY"
Cuneiform Records
In this album, originally released in 1992, the music by Peter
Frohmader finds itself in one of the most Cosmic stages of its
cycle. Yet this must not lead us to think that this music belongs
in this style, at least in the most typical trends of Space Music.
Certainly, "Cycle of Eternity" suggests a voyage through space and
time, yet from an unusual perspective. The various themes display
an esoteric character, almost typical of an atavic ritual
completely forgotten by humanity. By masterfully using
electronics, Frohmader gaps a bridge between the supernatural and
the reality that exists beyond our world. The voyage to the ends
of the universe is here presented then, in a way, as a feasible
voyage, yet only when our earthly life comes to its end and we
reach eternity.

PETER FROHMADER:
"MACROCOSM"
Cuneiform Records
Originally released in 1989, "Macrocosm" reflects one of the
periods when the artist had a deeper obsession about the enigmas
of the universe in all their unyielding vastness . Frohmader's
talent creating worlds of sound a long way out of conventional
structures allows him to provide his electronic music with a
eerie, unique, disquieting personality, yet at the same time
possessing an exotic beauty. Like a moor in the moonlight, from
his music emanate intoxicating and dangerous outflows. The starry
sky opens like a bottomless well before the listener.

ALBERT REMI:
"REMISCOP"
G3G Records
Albert Remi combines in an unusual manner atmospheres typical from
Ambient with elements of Rock ballad, as well as some touches of
what could be defined as "universal folk", and certain psychedelic
traits. Making use of this stage, he utilizes the guitar and his
whispering voice to draw a whole series of portraits with
crepuscular colors, soft, urban at times, metaphysical in other
occasions, which compose a peculiar gallery of life.
ALEJANDRO HINOJOSA

ROEDELIUS + ALQUIMIA:
"MOVE AND RESONATE"
Prudence / BSC Music
This album is the meeting between Hans-Joachim Roedelius, German
pioneer of the electronic avantgarde, and Alquimia, a versatile
Mexican artist who has explored the possibilities of synthesizers
as well as those of her voice in various innovative projects. This
unusual collaboration between them both has resulted in a likewise
remarkable CD. There are melodic passages of a great emotional
strength, which could be defined as a fusion of Atmospheric Pop
and World Music. And among them both, others of a mysterious, even
dreary character coexist, with a slow development and a structure
ranging from Ambient to mystic ritual music. Alquimia's voice,
which she herself processes electronically in various ways, turns
out to be unearthly at times, and very much earthly in other
occasions, perfectly fitting with the electronic textures and
exotic atmospheres.
EDUARDO FONTANA

HANS-JOACHIM ROEDELIUS
German musician Hans-Joachim Roedelius is a pioneer of electronic
and Ambient music. He began as a musician in the late sixties.
Together with Dieter Moebius he integrates the band Cluster, whose
first album, with Conrad Schnitzler, appeared in 1969. In the mid
seventies he initiated his solo career, without abandoning his
work in Cluster, although the activity of the duo has been
decreasing steadily in these last years. Also around the seventies
he began to collaborate with Brian Eno, and he was a member of the
band Harmonia as well, together with Michael Rother and Dieter
Moebius. Roedelius has composed movie soundtracks, has been
involved in several different artistic events, and has
collaborated with several musicians.

ALQUIMIA
Born in Mexico City, Alquimia studied piano, voice and composition
in Mexico and Canada. Her music derives from a highly varied
career in rock, popular music, avant-garde classical and
improvised music, and her albums present a challenging fusion of
ambient, electronic, psychedelic, ethnic and trance styles.
Alquimia is currently based in London and gives regular concert
performances as well as composing to commission for film, theatre,
dance groups, television and radio.

RUDIGER GLEISBERG:
"ELYSIUM"
Prudence / BSC Music
Listening to the music Rudiger Gleisberg has composed for this
album, it is obvious that the true evolution of Classical Music
does not lead to Experimental Chamber Music, but rather to such
forms as those being developed by Gleisberg since some years ago,
and which often are labelled within the New Instrumental Music.
Gleisberg, who has a classical education, is intelligent and
unprejudiced enough to channel his creativity through the means
offered by the new technologies, and thus he has been able to
explore Ambient, the most symphonic trends of Space Music of the
Berlin School, and Romantic Classicism, so as to finally complete
a sublime fussion among all these cultural heritages. The thirteen
themes in this CD possess an impressive emotional strength , which
flows between the enigmatic and the emotional. The music is
perceived as wholly genuine, natural, with no manipulative
elements whatsoever that might tend to have disparate elements fit
together. In these moments, Gleisberg is, among the European
composers who have been using synthesizers longest, one of the few
who compose with a greater loyalty to their personal ideas , not
allowing for any influence from commercial fads to make him stray
from his chosen path. In all, "Elysium" is a symphony deserving
maximum admiration, and one which constitutes a perfect example of
artistic inspiration as well as technical mastery.

Various:
"MUSIC FOR THE 3rd MILLENNIUM"
AMP Records
The change of millenium has in this collection of pieces, in most
cases previously unreleased, a perfect soundtrack. With a clear
dominance of Space Music, Ambient and Progressive Rock, the album
presents a careful selection of artists with interesting
compositions. These are the contents: Patrick Moraz: "Modular
Symphony 4th Movement", Karl Bartos / Electric Music: "Tour de
France", Rick Wakeman: "Catherine of Aragon, 1990's version",
Richard Pinhas / Schizotrope: "Marie Zorn", Mark Jenkins:
"Overture to Dante's Inferno", Steve Baltes: "The way it sounds",
Steve Jolliffe: "New Millennium", White Noise: "I need space", MC
Russell: "Into the future", Isao Tomita: "Pacific 231", Keith
Emerson: "Katoh-San", Synergy: "Moon Caves", Neil Ardley / Warren

GAVIN BRYARS & HARMONIA ENSEMBLE:
"THE NORTH SHORE"
Materiali Sonori
Gavin Bryars composed the piece "Intermezzo" to be performed by
the Harmonia Ensemble. Likewise, he prepared new versions of
"Allegrasco" and "The North Shore". The result of this
collaboration between the composer and the performers from
Harmonia is a solid CD, hard, which flows through terrains typical
of Classical Music, though incorporating some avantgarde elements,
and in some aspects showing certain touches of ambient and
minimalism as well.
VALERIANO GUIOL

GILBERT ISBIN & GEERT VERBEKE:
"TWINS"
Tern Records
Guitarist Gilbert Isbin and percussionist Geert Verbeke decided to
join their talents and their artistic skills to create an album of
experimentation, mysticism and meditation. Pushed by their easy
skills to improvise, they succeeded in creating a collection of
pieces which are quiet, hypnotic, with certain touches of Jazz.
Without resorting, through inertia, to the electronic media, both
musicians choose to embark on their journeys through sound from
the acoustic dimension. Bells and gongs hold the aura of mystery
that characterizes some of the themes. The classical guitar
weaves melodies at times melancholy, at times abstract in nature.
The result is unusual and easily attracts the attention of the
listener.

GILBERT ISBIN:
"GILBERT ISBIN PLAYS NICK DRAKE"
Traurige Tropen
This album is a homage to guitarist Nick Drake, the author of a
few albums released in the early seventies. Surrounded by an aura
of "contracultural artist", he ended up by committing suicide on
November, 1974, at age 26. In his life, his peculiar music was not
very well received. Yet as time went by, it was re-discovered by
numerous musicians who felt at once spiritually connected with it,
and to whom it has been a decissive artistic influence in the
evolution of their careers. The imagination perceived in Nick
Drake's music and the amount of his own being that Nick poured
into all his compositions are the elements that make it so
special. Gilbert Isbin, representing the feeling of many
guitarists, has adapted a selection of pieces by Drake to his own
style, as a homage and mutual collaboration throughout time and
space.
