Japanese artist Ryuchi Sakamoto, specialized in Classical Music
and Pop, utilizing all the resources offered by their acoustic and
electronic aspects, has collaborated in the creation of various
movie soundtracks , besides developing a successful career as a
composer. Even if he has always been interested in exploring the
new technologies in art and culture, he has never left out his
classical education, and thus, he offers us now an album, released
inn Japan in 1999, where the piano is the solo protagonist. Its
sixteen themes, of a quiet, calm, character, slow and relaxing,
can be labelled within the New Instrumental Music with some brush-
strokes of New Age.

ROGER ENO & PETER HAMMILL:
"THE APPOINTED HOUR"

In this original album we can appreciate a wonderful collaboration
between Roger Eno and Peter Hammill, who agreed to record one hour
of improvisations between 13:00 and 14:00 hours GMT on April 1st.,
1999, each one in his studio - and therefore, separately, with no
previous plan, at a considerable distance from one another -
hoping that the result would be surprising for both of them.
Should they succeed, they intended to combine their recordings
including some individual passages, some adequate moments of
synchronization, and several germs of ideas that could be
developed a posteriori. The result was an hour of uninterrupted
music where we can clearly perceive the masterful concentration of
both musicians, as well as a certain serious smile, given the date
when the recording was made.

ROGER ENO
Roger Eno, Brian's brother, began in music showing a tendency
towards a more classical trend than that of Brian's. Both of them
have worked together in several occasions. Roger is an experienced
pianist, and he has showed a great interest in musicotherapy. He
has collaborated with several musicians, among them those of the
Ensemble Harmonia, and he also is a member of the band Channel
Light Vessel.

MICHAEL THOMAS BERKLEY:

Numinous Records
A wonderful work, this album by Michael Thomas Berkley. In it he
has sculpted music inspired in the Arctic. Through the eleven
themes of the CD, the listener can easily re-create in his
imagination the desolate landscapes of the North Pole, the
adventures, sometimes tragic, that its explorers experienced, and
the atmosphere of this region, definitely as fascinating as it is
hostile. By skilfully utilizing synthesizers, he creates icy
textures, mysterious, near to cosmic Ambient, in the most
unsettling parts of the work. Other themes could be labelled
within the New Instrumental Music. There also are some touches of
Classical Music and Jazz. To record "Arctic", the artist has been
accompanied by a chamber music sextet from the Middlebury College
conducted by Evan Bennett, besides Mike Freitas (percussion), Ari
Langer (electronic violin) and Wayne Bennett (clarinet).

MICHAEL THOMAS BERKLEY
Michael Thomas Berkley is a composer, producer, performer, and
audio engineer. His music, which is entirely instrumental, is best
described as dramatic world ambient music, bridging contemporary
classical, world, trance, and organic ambient music. While Berkley
has spent most of his life studying European classical music, his
own music has been most significantly influenced by his travels to
Africa. In the spring of 1994, he traveled to Zimbabwe where he
conducted independent ethnomusicology field work in a remote
village. His ground-breaking field research culminated in a self-
authored article. Upon returning to the United States, he received
a grant from ASCAP for excellence in composition. In May of 1995,
he graduated from Middlebury College in Vermont with highest
honors in music composition. Immediately following his graduation,
he was accepted into the Center for Compositional Studies at the
Aspen Music Festival. Now a member of the National Association of
Composers (USA) and the American Music Center, Berkley is
currently composing and recording at his San Francisco studio.

The selection of pieces gathered in "Electronic Highlights"
includes an excellent brand of music by synthesists who have
released their albums with the label Spheric Music. The styles are
varied, yet they can be considered primarily within the most
symphonic trends of Space Music, Synth-Pop, the most electronic
aspects of Techno, and even, in some cases, the most cosmic side
of progressive Rock. The themes tend to be fast, or at least, non-
static.The melodies are very much present throughout the CD. This
album is a very commendable addition to the collection of the fans
of Space Sequencer Music as well as genres connected to this one
who want to get acquainted with new, fresh releases in this line.

Guitarist Potsch Potschka has created an interesting work that
joins New Instrumental Music with the essence of Arab folk music.
The result is a wonderful, suggestive brand of music that at times
seems to evoke the magic of the Tales Of A Thousand And One
Nights. Using the electric guitar as a solo instrument to create
Arab melodies is also a very remarkable feat, and besides, the
artist has thus contributed a greater strength to these melodies,
by stressing their most aggressive traits. "Overture" is a clear
example of this.

BJORN LYNNE:

Cyclops
Bjorn Lynne has always followed his own artistic path, ignoring
the ephemeral commercial fads. Once again he shows his talent with
an album brimming with emotions, composed of new versions of old
pieces of his. Basically it can be labelled within the most
electronic trends of Instrumental Progressive Rock, and his music
also displays elements of New Instrumental Music, as well as a
strong cosmic orientation. The talent of this artist is not only
obvious in the composition of the music, but also in the rich
orchestration, the careful selection of sounds and even the
mixing. Definitely, a luxurious album in the already intrinsically
brilliant career of this composer.

BJORN LYNNE
Bjorn Lynne is originally from Norway, where he spent his
childhood and youth. In 1995 his music brought him to England,
where he has now settled down in the Yorkshire countryside,
working in his own sound studio, called Studio17. After two self-
published CD albums, he signed with Centaur Discs in 1995, and
released Dreamstate. His earlier albums were mostly electronic and
made with synthesizers. On the later albums, he uses more guitars
(acoustic and electric), basses and other acoustic instruments.
Bjorn's music has been compared to Mike Oldfield, Tangerine Dream,
Genesis, Pink Floyd and others.

DAVID GARRIDO:

In this new album David Garrido shows once again his mastery in
the New Instrumental Music. Through beautifully developed pieces
of a varied character, deep, soft, blissful, corageous, the author
takes us into wondrous soundscapes whose quality of digital sound
and performance makes this a very special CD. The varied
instrumentation, including 14 kinds of guitar (Spanish, electric,
acoustic...), flutes, clarinets, ambient sounds from Nature,
pianos, saxos... gives the album a very special feel, a texture of
accented color, evoking timbres, atmospheres and images, at times
very impressive indeed, at times with perhaps certain touches of
the pop of the sixties, and others Baroque or psychedelic in
nature, all this being made possible thanks to the collaboration
of the artists accompanying Garrido in a masterful performance.

North Star is a band formed by Kevin Leonard, Dave Johnson, Glenn
Leonard and Joe Newman. Their music is very remarkable because it
constitutes an example of the alternative trends within
Instrumental Progressive Rock. This style is the basis they
develop their creativity on. Yet they go beyond the limits typical
of this genre, and thus we find they make wonderful incursions
within Synth-Pop, Jazz-Pop, World Music and the most symphonic,
wondrous aspects of the New Instrumental Music.

KEVIN LEONARD
Kevin Leonard became interested in music in the seventies. He has
participated in different bands. He is mainly known thanks to his
work as a keyboardist of the symphonic / progressive rock band
North Star. In the eighties he became known with his peculiar

With majestic orchestrations, of a heavenly hue and a great
warmth, ethereal melodies are being carefully woven. The
synthesizers, performing the music in a crystaline, atmospheric
way, provide the music with its quality of magic, unearthly
feeling. Likewise, the heavenly choirs are successfully
intertwined, and are perceived in different passages, subtly
weaved with a metaphysical orchestra.

Juan Carlos García, a composer and writer, explores in his musical
and literary works the spiritual questions and the transcendental
events that mark the life and the death of the Human Being.
Showing with his books and his CDs the total connection between
what he feels and what he reflects in his art, he succeeds in
vividly re-creating worlds of fantasy and imagination. In "Hadas"
he takes us through a journey into the most cherised legends about
the forests and their magical inhabitants. He uses the
synthesizers in an orchestral, ethereal manner, like for instance
Constance Demby and Michel Huygen tend to do, although Juan Carlos
García follows his own path and style. In all, seven compositions
to let imagination run free.

LARS ALSING:
"THE OMEN"
Fonix Musik
This album by composer Lars Alsing consists in six themes whose
beautiful melodies flow between Atmospheric Pop, New Age Music and
New Instrumental Music. Following the path initiated with his CD
"Spirit", the music also has certain soft traits, at times even
sensual, with a fluid rhythm, which offers the listener a quiet,
joyful, vision of life, at times with certain touches of
nostalgia, at times relaxing, giving the listener a sense of peace
and quiet. The author, who in other occasions has also
collaborated with such artists as Kristian Borregaard, creates an
album, released by the Danish label Fonix Music, where the
electronic instruments are interwoven with ethereal vocals and
successful choirs in the adequate moments, thus giving the CD a
soft beauty that will no doubt appeal to a wide audience.

Barbara Lewis uses her powerful voice in a very warm manner, in
compositions that present traits from Atmospheric Pop and Jazz.

"Light". In all of them, the artist shows her love for beautiful
melodies.

Matt Borghi has succeeded in transmitting intense feelings with
this album of Space Ambient Music. Profoundly involved at a
personal level with the release of the album, the various
electronic compositions are like night photographs of the starry
sky. Most remarkable is "Autumnal Space", a long theme that arose
from the sudden inspiration of the author one night. In this
theme, of a cosmic-minimalist nature, the vaporous sound, gaseous,
with a certain analogic taste, which dominates the sound stage,
was for the artist like discovering the pitch of the inner musical
voice that for years he had uselessly tried to find.

Saul Stokes is a very characteristic artist specialized in the
electronic ambient/experimental music. In his recordings he tends

himself builds, yet his music possesses a modern touch, fresh and
daring indeed, masterfully managing the technology at his
disposal. A supporter of live performances, his sound is
challenging and dynamic. His music flows, evolving, never losing
its intrinsic beauty, deep, hypnotic, with electronic
undercurrents that lead to atmospheres full of a soft energy, at
times with space or cosmic brushes, and always having in mind the
exploration of new soundscapes with a creativity that can hardly
be surpassed.
