"SILENT MARS"
Vagern Records
Synthesists John Lakveet and Dom F. Scab have collaborated
together in the creation of an album that explores their common
interests in the most cosmic sector of electronic music. The album
also includes elements typical of the most symphonic side of the
New Instrumental Music. By using powerful sequencers and a careful
selection of synthesizers with which both artists feel identified
(as for instance the legendary Yamaha CS-80) they have created a
brilliant collection of pieces inspired on the exploration of
planet Mars. Each theme has its own personality, and awakens
different emotions. One of the most melancholy pieces, which also
invites the listener best to reflect on the important things of
life, is "Twelve Wishes". In "The Aisle Moves" human stubborness
and ingenuity to face difficulties and dangers so as to achieve
the desired goal is remarkably portrayed. Energy and optimism can
be perceived in such themes as "La source des Dieux" and "Tricks &
Games of Mrs. Thumb". Mystery, the taste of adventure and the
excitement of travelling towards the unknown are likewise the
sensations that flow from the compositions in this album.
Definitely, "Silent Mars" is one of these works that prove that
electronic music which can be labelled as Space Music can sound
surprisingly warm and near to the listener, like a soundtrack for
life.

DOM F. SCAB
Synthesist Dom F. Scab is a member of the band At-Mooss. Born in
1965, he started taking piano lessons at age ten. Over the next
years, he worked toward acquiring the tools and the ability to
develop his own musical style. He began a solo career as a
composer in 1998. His music has gotten airplay on such famous
radio programs like Echoes (in the USA).Scab has composed some
soundtracks. He has collaborated with several musicians, among
them Albert Giménez (ex-member of Neuronium). He is also a skilled
sound engineer.

RYUCHY SAKAMOTO:
"CINEMAGE"
Kab America / Sony Music
In this selection of 6 pieces, Ryuchi Sakamoto expresses musically
visual events in an evocative, masterful way. His compositions
reflect both the classical education of the artist and his
fascination with experimentation, techno-pop, minimalism or
Concrete Music, all of which he has os often reflected in movie
soundtracks such as those in this album, a fact that has earned
him an Oscar (The Last Emperor",1987), besides various Grammy
awards. All that can be appreciated in this new album. Thus, in
"Forbidden Colours", the song theme of the film "Merry Cristmas,
Mr. Lawrence", is here rendered in a poetic version with
Schubertian traits intertwined with Japanese folk airs. "The Last
Emperor", with its slow, dark brush-strokes, gives way to the next
piece, "Little Buddha", where a certain touch of hope shapes the
somber environment previously created.. "Wuthering Heights" is
developed in a Romantic atmosphere. "Replica" is the most
minimalist of the pieces in the album. "El Mar Mediterrani",
inpired in the Olympic Games held in Barcelona, in 1992 could be
the perfect soundtrack for their opening ceremonies, as it
reflects the Catalan, typically Mediterranean color, together with
the particular creativity of the artist. In all, a very
commendable album for the followers of Sakamoto's musical career.

Orchestronics
Bulls & Bears is an album perhaps somewhat sparse in the
technology employed, yet a very thorough one, even baroque in the
composition. This trait stresses counterpoints and musical
dialogues in the classical way; It alternates very different
rhytms, it grows and decreases in a constant manner... It reminds
the listener of the style favored by J.S. Bach himself in more
than one sense, and distills, among strings and pianos, even
despite its liveliness, a slight melancholy only dispersed in very
concrete moments. Moments that, although it turns out to be a
paradox, lead us to reflect whether this is a true musical masked
ball.

MAMELANG:
"ZULU HEARTBEAT"

This is the debut album of the band Mamelang (a Zulu word meaning
"Listen"), whose members, mostly from South African origin, work
together to transmit the rhythms of their homeland. The lyrics,
sung in Zulu or Sotho, are a heartfelt plea for us to listen to
the happiness and hardships of everyday life in the Townships. The
songs are about Aids and the need for prevention of such a
hideous, decimating illness, the fight to preserve the cultural
heritage of the African peoples, the beauty of the land, the work
of the young women collecting firewood for the village,
hospitality, the need to reconcile differences among the different
ethnic groups and peace to prosper as a nation, all these themes
that are a call for the audience to make the reality of the
African countries known to the world with rhythms that blend the
traditional with the modern trends in todays's World Music. No
doubt this CD is an album that adds new, interesting shades to
this musical genre.

Romanian composer Sorin Pavelesco, settled in Quebec (Canada) in
1976 presents here an ambitious project where the frontiers
between Classical Music, the New Age Music, electronic music,
Ambient and the World Music become blurred, thus weaving an
harmonious whole, with the idea of exploring the mystical oniric
universe in a long musical quest. The album results into a varied
narrative tapestry, at times hypnotic, calm, relaxing, while at
other times becoming alive, really lively, passionate, in some
occassions with darkish, somewhat nightmarish brush-strokes, in a
series of sequences typical of dreams, covering a wide range of
human emotions not unlike those we experience when we are
dreaming. The piano, the harp, the flute, rhythms from India and
analog keyboards shape a variety of atmospheres, textures and
melodies that immerse the listener within a magical world where
time ceases to exist, full of imagination, and whose unifying
factor are the brief narrative passages intertwined by the author,
which take us from one dream to the next in a fluid way, almost
without our realizing so. In all, this is indeed an album that
will no doubt appeal to a wide audience, given its imaginative
nature as well as its conceptual originality.

In this album we find 19 tracks that, as indicated by its title,
have a progressi ve,character , experimental at times, with a
brilliant architecture of musical moments as diverse as they are
interesting. Acoustic instruments blend with digital sound, thus
creating unexpected electroacoustic textures. At times the music
follows the structures of Urban Progressive Rock, with sudden
turns and musical brush-strokes towards unexplored paths in a
quest to experiment the possibilities of sound, together with a
lively use of percussion, beating a rhythm that is the leitmotif
of the album. Shades of ethnic reminiscences or fusions with a
variety of styles ranging from the romantic to the bleak or the
unexpected, as well as relaxing moments in the new age waves,
together with some more disquieting hints, dark or even cosmic in
nature at times, make this album somewhat difficult to categorize
within a given label or trend.

"MYSTERY OF LIFE"

Alaya continues to be loyal to his mystic style, to his intimate
ambiences created basically through pads and deaccelerated
rhythms, as well as sweet melodies. Calm dominates, reigns, and is
only disturbed by some isolated sequence or very particular
rhythms. Nevertheless, the last theme, Train Evolution, seems to
leave a small path to avantgarde, to modernity. The peace is
shattered by the powerful industrial rhythm, the samplers and
their distortions, as well as melodies that, without being dark,
forget for a moment their previous sweetness.

PETER HAMMILL:
"THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER"

This CD, based on the tale written by Edgar Allan Poe, is a re-
recording and remix of the opera released in 1991 based on a
libretto by Chris Judge Smith,, which at the time was mostly
unnoticed by the wider audience, whereas it was exaggerately
praised or condemned a minority of both enthusiastic supporters
and detractors alike. This new version has suppressed percussion,
while at the same time radically changing instrumentation and
vocals, so that the work has improved in intensity and sound, in
such a way that the atmosphere of the terrifying universe created
by Poe acquires a depth and a new dimensional sense through the
music, resulting into a more impressive, disquieting work of art,
with bleak and even dreadful touches, creating a dark, sinister
atmosphere which transmits Poe's spirit to the listener in all its
essence and inner strength. The album is presented in a luxurious
format, including a libretto with the complete lyrics on a very
adequate graphic design. The vocals by Peter Hammill in the role
of Roderick Usher, as well as the performance of the artists
accompanying him, make of this CD a unique work which no doubt
will interest the lovers of current opera as well as the new
musical forms of expression in our age.

Tangerine Dream, Schulze... their style is evoked yet
reformulated; adapted to modernity, yet not perverted by it. A
masterpiece reminding us that which is creativity: to know the
past, mix it up, and from its sum, become innovative.

TOMAS MICHAUD:

This is the second album released by virtuoso American composer
and guitarist Tomas Michaud. In his eleven themes, the artist
expresses his fascination for the music with Spanish roots, Latin
airs or Flamenco traits. His emotional melodies, sensuous,
passionate, make of this album a wonderful addition to the
universe of Contemporary Instrumental World Music with certain
touches of Smooth Jazz and ethnic airs of North African music,
thus taking the listener to a voyage through a very special
universe of sound. The author reflects his own experiences as well
as his particular vision of the world, acquired throughout his
journeys to foreign lands. Most remarkable is "Night In Antigua",
inspired when the artist was contemplating the picturesque sunset
landscape of this city in Guatemala, sited in the confluence of
three volcanoes. In all, this CD evokes a spirit which happens to
be modern, urbane, while at the same time being full of
traditional Latin and Spanish airs, in some occassions romantic,
passionate in others, filling the listener with the soul of
different cultures.

In this album, pianist and composer Arturo Stalteri, moved by his
interest in the varied stylistic directions of Brian Eno's, has
selected several pieces by Eno, remodelling them into new versions
to explore the aspects he finds most attractive in them. Using
basically the piano and acoustic instruments, and with a certain
focus typical of the performers of Chamber Music, Stalteri, has
enhanced the melodies of the pieces by Eno he has chosen, thus
making them stop sounding almost subliminally so as to give them
an absolute protagonism, while at the same time exploring other
hidden shades in the music of this genius. In the performance he
is accompanied by six musicians more. In contact with Brian Eno,
the latter immediately felt interested in this project when
Stalteri made him this proposal. The themes included in the album
are: "Becalmed", "Julie with...", "Sparrowfall" 1 & 2 & 3,
"Another Green World", "St. Elmo's fire", "Zawinul / Lava", "On
some faraway beach", "Roman Twilight", "Garden recalled", "An
ending (Ascent)", "Here come the warm jets", "Decentre", "From the
same hill".

Johannes Linstead shows in this album his great skills with the
Spanish guitar in what could be defined as his particular style of
the genre known as "Noveau Flamenco". His lively rhythms, full of
the Latin soul, include a wide range of melodies and Spanish airs
that take us to a musical journey through the Caribbean, South
American dreams and reminiscences from Spain (Europe), where the
Spanish guitar, with certain touches of pop, result in a CD not so
easy to fit in a given label, since in a way it can be considered
