ELISE KERMANI
Composer, soprano, improviser and multimedia artist Elise Kermani,
specialized in avantgarde performances, utilizes all the resources
that current technology has to offer in the development of her
creativity, which displays an exquisitely elegant theatrical sense,
always applying electronic effects to transform her peculiar vocal
techniques. By combining sound and poetry with real and imaginary
words, extended vocal techniques and electronic processing of
sounds, together with movement, this artist composes a kind of
music where the sonic sources are pure, clear, and later
transformed into something warm and very special indeed. Kermani
usually performs solo, although she also has collaborated with
renowned video artists, computer programmers and designers, in her
multidisciplinary creations. Likewise, she often collaborates with
the New Music ensemble "Trousers".
Elise Kermani comments on her views about art and the role that
artists have in society: "Artists have the power to transform
themselves and others through the process of making art, and,
through the experience of witnessing the creative product. Artists
have a responsibility to be aware of their physical surroundings,
to be informed of the reality in world situations and in the human
condition. We must strive to be scientists by discovering a new
world and a new language. We have a social responsibility to
incorporate the use of new technology into our work, just as modern
science, business and education has - not as a defensive reaction
to our changing technology, but as an integrated leader."
Kermani receives her musical education, specializing in
Composition, at the DePauw University, in Greencastle, IN (USA),
and graduates with her composition "Lullaby" in 1983.
The works by this composer worth mentioning are the following:
Mandala" (1984), whose score was painted opn a large sheet.
"Crystal Mass" - "Common Language" (1988), a work composed in
collaboration with a sculptor and a choreographer using MasterPiece
software, synthesizer and voice.
"Mass of the Crimson Ark" (1990), composed for four singers, twenty
rock performers and a percussionist.
"THe HearTH" (1991), for three performers and video, where a meal
is prepared, cooked, the table is laid, and everything is burned
onstage, as the sounds are processed live.
"Daughters of Rejection" (1991), for two performers, two musicians,
processed violin, marbles, plastic sheets, drums and voice.
Utilizing texts from the Koran, this work is a homage to the
daughters of the ancient Arab world, and is about a young girl who
comes back from the dead to violently haunt her father.
"Inanna (Ritual of Descent)" (1992), a piece belonging to the New
Music opera "Orpheus and Euridike", directed by Johannes Birringer.
The plot tells about a woman in an asylum trying to speak about her
rape, while several phantoms dialogue with her, and she is ritually
bathed in a plexiglass tub.
"Artem(Is) Rising" (1993), an interactive performance with video,
incorporates texts from the New York Times, the Iran Times, The
Bible and the Coran to create a female vision of sexuality. In this
work the artist utilizes the infrared motion sensor Body Chime to
control the synthesizer sequences together with partial random
sequences.
"Scriptures" (1993), a solo piece incorporatimg texts from the
Coran and the Iran Times, examines the paradox and the politics of
the Chador or Iranian veil imposed on women. In this work, the
artist collaborates with videoartist Benton Bainbridge.
"Private Eye/Public Hand" (1993), is a sonic
performance/installation in collaboration with multimedia artist
Nancy Meli Walker.
"Mother Tongue" (1994), a solo performance with text and vocal
processing.
Her most recent works imply a reduced number of male and female
characters, each one of whom represents a different aspect of human
emotion through the myths they narrate with their bodies and their
voices in an abstract, supernatural yet clear language. The
interest the artist feels in language is also seen in her solo
performance directed by Rachel Wineberg, with "Dreaming the Page",
a trilogy including "Mother Tongue", "My Father Fell from the Sky"
and "Oh, Oh, Oh Fricative", where she explores the family
relationships with language, this being a performance of a non-
lineal character where Kermani displays her extensive vocal
techniques electronically processed, alternating the characters of
a young man and his mother.
Elise Kermani has supervised the recording of a CD collection
devoted to experimental vocalists, "The DICE Project", under the
label Ishtar Record, of MiShinnah Productions, whose participants
range from solo works to several ensemble pieces and different
bands, to women composers, workshops, lectures and conferences.
Her works have been performed in prestigious institutions, such as
The Kitchen, Experimental Intermedia, The Knitting Factory, La
Galleria, HERE,Dia Center for the Arts,The Roulette, CB's Gallery,
Context, Ward-Nasse Gallery, DCTV, NADA Theatre, Ceres Gallery,

REVIEWS:
FRANK VAN BOGAERT:
"DOCKING"
Groove
"Docking", the third album written, performed and produced by Frank
Van Bogaert, has just been released by Groove Unlimited. IMHO, it
contains some of the most beautiful music that this artist has
written to date. When one considers the mood of his previous works,
the new one is certainly more intimate, more mature. You'll find
less folk and ethnic influences this time, as well as a little more
piano, and also guitars. Of course, the electronic sounds continue
to be the stars (as usual) but the melodies and sound effects give
us a different range of experiences. We have a complex sonic
architecture now, and there are a couple of themes which sound
specially well. The CD has 11 tracks, 11 themes with a warmth of
sound rarely seen within these types of music. Van Bogaert is one
of the most respected European electronic musicians. Thanks to his
technical background he has engineered all the album. With
"Docking", and with all its melodic and emotional content, he has
shown that he has mastered all the intricacies of this difficult
business.

BJORN LYNNE
New studio album "REVIVE"
A driving, positive, uplifting and melodic album of progressive and
symphonic rock. This music wasn't written to be "clever" - just
great listening. Featuring guest appearances by the awesome lead
guitarist Rory McLeish (with a playing style not unlike Satriani),
Revive is a bombshell of an instrumental rock feast that will keep
you nailed to the floor... no... the ceiling!
-"With searing guitars, 'Revive' leaves most instrumental projects
in the dust" - (Symphonie Fantastique)
-"Powerful and consistent stuff. Bjorn Lynne has done it ...again!"
-(Margen Magazine)
-"The talent of this artist is not only obvious in the composition
of the music, but also in the rich orchestration, the careful
selection of sounds and even the mixing. Definitely, a luxurious
album in the already intrinsically brilliant career of this
composer." - (Amazing Sounds)

Bjorn Lynne bio:
Originally from Norway, this multi instrumentalist moved to England
in 1995 to have a full hearted go at making a living as a
progressive rock and synth-rock artist. He has since lived in
Yorkshire and has established himself as the new and fresh voice in
progressive, symphonic and electronic crossover music. His music
keeps the listener on tip-toes throughout, described by reviewers
as a mix of Dream Theater, Tangerine Dream, Pink Floyd, Flower
Kings and Ayreon - but without wasting time on boring vocals! His
albums are released on Cyclops Records and should be available
through the normal symphonic rock dealers - or you can get them
direct from Bjorn himself, at his personal web site :

DELAGO:
"TRANCEALPIN"
Prudence / BSC Music
Herman Delago presents in this album a musical portrait of the
essence of Tyrolean music where a trance-like state of
consciousness is reflected, thus opening our inner mind to the
spiritual stimuli in our world, to the basic elements of human
nature. The music blends the typical sounds of alphorns with
didgeridoos, brass and percussion, synthesizers and bells, adding
ethnic traits from Asia, Africa and America. The seven piecesin the
CD range from the meditative to the relaxing. Also, some touches of
Minimalism, Techno, World Music, New Age Music, and New
Instrumental Music are masterfully fusioned, thus resulting in a CD
where the forces of nature, the feeling of the sacred spiritual
world, the sense of home and exotic musical traditions take us to a
voyage through soundscapes as varied as life itself..
SIGRID BAUMANN
MICHAEL STEARNS:
"SPIRITS OF THE VOYAGE"
Earth Turtle Music / Triton Films
This CD by Michael Stears is the soundtrack the artist created for
a documentary by Triton films about the magical initiation rites of
Micronesian navigators dating from ancient times , whose
traditions, wisdom, lore and courage has lasted for thousands of
years. The sixteen tracks paint a wondrous soundscape which takes
us throughout space and time sailing the Pacific seas, portraying
the beauty of the islands, the ritual songs and chants made on the
island of Lamotrek, where the filming took place, the prayers of
those about to sail into their quest as well as those from their
loved ones asking for protection from the sea spirits for their kin
about to test their skills on sea... It is indeed a fine addition
to the World Music universe, with its flavor of distant lands and
unknown quests full of the spirits of the sea, with relaxing
touches and soft textures, bringing inner peace and enhancing the
imagination of the listener, an album that will no doubt appeal to
the lovers of this musical style.

MICHAEL STEARNS:
"THE MIDDLE OF TIME"
Earth Turtle Music
Michaes Stearns created this beautifully inspiring music as the
soundtrack to the documentary ."The Mystery of Chaco Canyon",
narrated by Robert Redford. The title of the CD reflects the fact
that the ancient ruins sited on the location of the documentary,
Pueblo Bonito, in New Mexico, had been built in a way that marked
the noon sun and equinox, the marking of "the middle of time".The
eighteen pieces in the album reflect the ancient mystery of the
ruins left by the native inhabitants in the distant past. Together
with its subdued textures and soft rhytmic sounds, the melodies
come and go like a sea of time patterns enveloping a mysterious
land. Native American chants are masterfully interwoven in the
music created by Stearns, thus picturing a creative, appalling
soundscape that reaches into the imagination of the listener,
awakening our sense of wonder and reverence for the roots of
ancient peoples and the mystery of those distant times in the past.
Once again, Stearns gives us an inspired work that shares a touch
of World Music with the patterns of New Instrumental Music, a
calming piece of listening to let our imagination relax and fly
free to otherwordly soundscapes.
MONTSE ANDREU-MARIN.
MICHAEL STEARNS
"WITHIN - THE NINE DIMENSIONS"
Earth Turtle Music
"Within - The Nine Dimensions" is the new solo album created by
Michael Stearns, a commission for Barbara Hand Clow of Bear and
Co.The music is based on a system of nine dimensions related to her
book "The Pleiadian Agenda". Using a large Serge synthesizer, bells
and singing bowls from around the world, in the same way as Stearns
had used for the soundtrack to the film "Baraka", the artist has
created nine impressive pieces, with the last one interweaving
elements of the previous eight together, often with several playing
at the same time. After the commission, Stearns created his own
version of the music, resulting in the album we have now. New
Instrumental Music, hand in hand with World Music, regale the
listener with a new, relaxing soundscape apt for meditation and the
enhancement of our awareness, a restful ocean of soft textures that
will no doubt appeal to the lovers of this musical genre.

MICHAEL STEARNS
Michael Stearns began as a guitarist in the sixties, playing in
rock and jazz bands. In 1968, he composed his first electronic
piece, while he was studying at university. After he completed his
musical studies, he opened a studio where he began to produce his
music together with jingles for the local radio and television
nets. After being a resident artist at the Emily Conrad's Continuum
Studio in 1975 and playing for two years in the free jazz trio
Alivity, he recorded his first album. Since then, he has continued
to release his own records, besides composing soundtracks and
collaborating in other productions.

"ANCIENT JOURNEYS"
BSC Music / Prudence
Michael Holm and Christian Schulze take us once again to imaginary
voyages through their music in "Ancient Journeys". As the title of
the CD indicates, the listener embarks on a dreamy tour to the
past, wrapped in the traditional sounds of ancestral melodies of
the Andes, intertwined with rhythms of New Instrumental Music with
certain touches of Pop. The Cd is a homage to the great explorers
of the past, in nine themes where tribal drums, soaring flutes.
ethereal melodies, ancient musical instruments from all over the
world and the most modern synthesizers weave a wondrousl tapestry
that captures the romance of ancient Spanish galleons and the
Conquistadores, the caravans to Eastern lands with Marco Polo, the
oddyseys of ancestral migrators such as the primitive nomadic
tribes peopling the North of America or Asia, the busy bazaars in
Byzantium, the audacious journes of VAsco Da Gama, the cradle of
civilization in Mesopotamia, The Bulgar Horsemen of the seventh
century, or the great Crusades in the Middle Ages. Kublai Khan and
his Empire, all that with the usual mastery that Cusco has always
displayed for the delight of their fans.

CUSCO
German band Cusco consists basically in Michael Holm and Kristian
Schultze, although both have often enjoyed the participation of
several collaborators. Their music is mainly concentrated on
synthesized sounds, even though in their career they have navigated
through several styles, sometimes near to ethnic music, at other
times to techno, to new age and even to ambient music. Most
remarkable is their particular rhythmic treatment as well as their
use of electronic sounds.
