VASCO MARTINS:
"LUNARIO PERPETUO"
VM Productions
An impressive double CD full of symphonism and unearthly
ambiences. On the one hand, we have the bewithching keyboards of
the first CD. On the other hand, the warm electric guitar of the
second CD. In both cases, this imaginative artist from Green Cape
knows how to play with the sound of echoes and of silence itself,
while weaving suggestive, crystaline tapestries. The music
insinuates the romanticism of a summer night under a starry sky.
Drifting from Ambient to the most ethereal sector of Classical
Music, this work shows a daring stylistic conceptand the excellent
level that Vasco Martins has as a music innovator.
HECTOR JORDAN

OPERA TO RELAX:
"FROM LIFE 2 LIFE"
Prudence / BSC Music
The duo Opera to relax, consisting in Veronika Langguth and Martin
Hoemberg, creates a kind of music near to Atmospheric Pop, full of
warm atmospheres and with the sensual vocals of Veronika stressing
in various passages the ethereal nature of this work. Martin
Hoemberg is well known thanks to his activity in the musical
avantgarde of the seventies. Veronika Langguth is a popular
specialist in personal growth therapies who has written books on
this issue and who even founded a dance ensemble. Her musical
ideas have found in those by Martin the perfect complement to give
birth to the style of the duo.
HECTOR JORDAN

LUTZ ULBRICH:
"KURZMUSIKEN"
Manikin Records
Guitarist Lutz Ulbrich is one of the great artists in the musical
avantgarde that in the seventies led the birth of the most popular
genres in electronic music. Well known for his work in Ashra
Tempel and Agitation Free, he collaborated with the legendary
artist Nico, has created music for all sorts of media, and in a
word, his musical life is intimately intertwined with the history
of electronic music itself. This double album includes a
magnificient collection of unreleased pieces, selected among over
two hundred tapes by the author, to elaborate, in a way, a sort of
musical biography outside his work in Ashra Tempel and other
bands. The great wealth, originality and variety of the 50 themes
here gathered are the best witness to the creative force and the
visionary capability of Lutz Ulbrich. We can listen to Space
Music, ominous, epic, wondrous, symphonic, psychedelic,
progressive, Synth-Pop, with ethnic influences and even music that
cannot be labelled, although in all the cases it is a high quality
music that breaks all patterns.
JORGE MUNNSHE

MOTHER MALLARD:
"LIKE A DUCK TO WATER"
Cuneiform Records
Albums like this one help the listener to understand the origins
and the evolution of electronic music better than any book. Mother
Mallard, a band whose creation was intimately shaped by the birth
of the synthesizers by Robert Moog, with whom they were in close
contact, already had an important musical history when in the mid
seventies they created the compositions that are gathered in this
album. Following the innovative spirit of their earliest
creations, Mother Mallard explore the beauty and the complexity of
rhythmic sequences and those of other elements that shaped the
identity marks of Space Sequencer Music, while at the same time
adopting a structure typical of Minimalism, directly linking it
all with the experiences that other pioneers were carrying out in
the field of scholar musical experimentation. It is no coincidence
that Mother Mallard be a band described by many as a predecessor
of Tangerine Dream, both due to their imaginative use of
sequencers and layers of melodies overlapping one another
developed with synthesizers, and at the same time having featured
collaborations of such artists as John Cage. Those different ways
of experimentation, at times being completely at odds with one
another as they are, fit perfectly well with Mother Mallard.

RAINBOW SERPENT:
"VOICES OF THE FIRST DAY"
Manikin Records
Rainbow Serpent show in this album a great sensitivity when it
comes to creating passages dominated by warm, emotional melodies,
together with others where the strong sequencer rhythms dominate.
With a clear inspiration in the search by means of radio
telescopes of intelligent life signs coming from space, the music
is perfectly adequate to the transcendency of this activity, and
turns out to be mysterious, powerful and intense.
EDGAR KOGLER

BALTES / GROSSKOPF / HEILHECKER:
"VIERMALDREI"
Manikin Records
Steve Baltes, Harald Grosskopf and Axel Manrico Heilhecker have
released an album of vital rhythmic music, near to Trance, Synth-
Pop and Psychedelic Rock. The style of the four themes included in
this release also contains stylistic traits that remind the
listener of Ashra Tempel, a band that has made Baltes and
Grosskopf well known for their creativity and strength.
EDGAR KOGLER

KELLER & SCHONWALDER:
THE REASON WHY...PART TWO
Manikin Records
In this new collaboration of German synthesists Detlef Keller and
Mario Schonwalder, as in former works, space atmospheres, powerful
sequencer rhythms and long developments are the predominant leit
motiv, almost trance-like, of the tracks here included. Three
compositions shape this album, recorded during live performances.
This is a kind of electronic music that sets the listeners'
imagination to roam free in the sky. soaring and flying
unrestrained over suggestive soundscapes.
EDGAR KOGLER

LUIS ALBERTO NARANJO:
"SPHERA"
Blue Project Musica
A fresh sort of music, personal, full of solid ideas. Thus is
"Sphera", a work that emphasizes the capability of electronic
music to deeply penetrate the human soul, even more deeply than
many acoustic, conventional ways of making music. By joining
emotional melodies, with a certain melancholy, mysterious air,
with elements from Synth-Pop and from a symphonism with certain
Classical touches, the composer succeeds in creating a soundscape
of a great beauty indeed.

LARRY KUCHARZ:
"TECHNO UNIT 32: MISC. TRACKS"
International Audiochrome
A very interesting CD by Larry Kucharz. By recovering in part the
avantgarde ideas on rhythm and minimalism he developed years ago,
he dares to enter the terrain of Techno and Trance music, to
create pieces that, on the one hand, will attract those who follow
genres linked to these labels, while at the same time carrying out
a clear exercise of minimalism. Completely based on rhythm, the
eleven tracks have also melodies, often supported on the rhythmic
variations themselves.

STEPHANIE SANTE:
"INNER BEAUTY"
Sante Music
Stephanie Sante is a composer capable of plunging us into
unearthly regions, dominated by the heavenly, although with dark
secret paths as well. Using synthesizers with great warmth, she
creates pieces of a crystaline ambient, ethereal, ingravid. The
music is mostly static, with melodic waves that come and go,
though there also are rhythmic passages where she makes an
imaginative use of sequencers.

BERND KISTENMACHER:
"UN VIAGGIO ATTRAVERSO L'ITALIA"
Prudence / BSC Music
Proving his versatility as a composer, synthesist Bernd
Kistenmacher shapes in the form of music his personal impressions
after a stay in Italy. Fusing his Berlin electronic roots with a
symphonism of classical traits and a Mediterranean focus, he
offers us four tracks brimming with vitality, where he masterfully
manages rhythms near to Trance, atmospheres typical of Ambient,
and often romantic melodies that are enhanced by the use of piano
in certain passages.
EDGAR KOGLER

ERIK WOLLO:
"WIND JOURNEY"
Spotted Peccary Music
Luminous airy music. Thus could this album by Erik Wollo be
defined. Luminous because it turns out to be as warm as the
sunrays in a clear morning. Airy, given its agile, dynamic,
crystalline and at times ethereal shades. Both the title and the
cover of the album refer to an air walk. And certainly, the
compositions seem to reflect the sensations and emotions that can
be experienced in free flight, onboard a balloon or an airplane.
Of course, there also are moments with other orientations. Yet
anyway, this is a very intense album, where it is obvious that
Wollo has immersed his five senses. On the other hand, This is
styllistically speaking his most electronic album in several
years.
