Oskar Sala died at 91 in Berlin.
Sala, born in 1910, studied composition with Paul Hindemith in
Berlin. He assisted Dr. Friedrich Trautwein in constructing the
first Trautonium, and in 1930, together with Hindemith and Rudolph
Schmidt, gave the premiere performance of the "Triostucke" for
three Trautoniums, composed by Hindemith. In 1931, Sala was the
soloist in Hindemith's "Konzertsuck fur Trautonium mit Begleitung
des Streichorchesters". His first independant construction was a
Radio Trautonium in 1935. Between 1949 and 1952 he succeeded in
builing his Mixtur-Trautonium (a development of the original
Trautonium) with patents registered in Germany, France and the
U.S. In 1958, he created his own electronic studio in Berlin. He
wrote numerous electronic compositions there, particularly for
radio, films and television. His electronic-sound illustration to
Alfred Hitchcock's film "The Birds" became specially well-known.
Essential recordings:
-MY FASCINATING INSTRUMENT
-SUBHARMONISCHE MIXTUREN
-ELEKTRONISCHE IMPRESSIONEN
Our review of "ELEKTRONISCHE IMPRESSIONEN":
This is a very interesting collection of three works played with a
singular instrument: The Trautonium. It is an amazing electric
instrument invented in 1930 by Friedrich Trautwein. In some way,
it was a predecessor of the current synthesizers. The player
presses a wire onto a metal rail, so completing a circuit. The
resistance in the circuit varies depending on the point along the
wire which makes contact with the rail; that in turn determines
the frequency of the note. A unique feature is the series of
subharmonics. This CD contains a recording of "Triostucke"
(composed by Paul Hindemith, 1930) made in 1977 by Oskar Sala on
his Mixtur-Trautonium (a development of the original Trautonium),
a recording of "Konzertsuck fur Trautonium mit Begleitung des
Streichorchesters" (composed by Paul Hindemith, 1931) and
"Elektronische Impressionen" (Oskar Sala, 1978). "Triostucke" and
"Konzertsuck fur Trautonium mit Begleitung des Streichorchesters"
are pieces that enter Classical Music, with some traits typical of
New Music. The trautoniums are accompanied by the acoustic
orchestra. "Elektronische Impressionen" is pure electronic
experimental music, with the philosophy of exploring new sonic
continents.

"Colony", the new album release by Bjorn Lynne, is now in the
hands of the CD manufacturing plant. The manufacturing cycle
should take around three weeks. When the CD is released, all
copies sold directly from Bjorn himself (not through other
distributors, only directly from him at his site), will be
individually numbered and signed in Gold ink. This will only be
done to copies sold during the first 14 days after Bjorn announce
the CD for sale. You can see the full track listing and the cover
artwork by Tobias Richter here:

REVIEWS:

VANGELIS:
"MYTHODEA"
Sony Classical
This album gathers the music composed by the author for the NASA
mission 2001 Mars Odyssey. This is one of the most Classical
albums lately released by Vangelis. The 11 pieces constituting
this compact disc are more orchestra-oriented rather than
electronic. Vangelis, who in this album plays the electronic
keyboards, is accompanied by Kathleen Battle and Jessye Norman
(sopranos), the London Metropolitan Orchestra, and the National
Opera of Greece Choir. With the strength of a painter from the
Renaissance, in this album, Vangelis embarks into an epic voyage
to the Red Planet. The majestic melodies appear to grow little by
little, in a continuous crescendo that reaches incredible heights.
Although "Mythodea" is not a dark work, there is no lack of
mysterious atmospheres and passages, where one can, for instance,
feel as if we were travelling towards the unknown, far from any
common region of the universe. In summary, a wonderful classical
work by The Wizard of Keyboards.

AT-MOOSS:
"CYCLOTRON"
At-Mooss Records
The band At-Mooss surprise us once again with an immersion into
unknown abysses in the ocean of the musical avantgarde. The
musicians utilize electronics with a great imagination and skill,
drawing with energic brush-strokes a stage to let imagination run
free towards life-and-death situations. They create an icy
universe, with eerie yet wondrous landscapes, as well as zones of
anguish and darkness. The six pieces, composed by Joseph Loibant
and Air J. Mic, are each one a journey towards the unknown. All of
them possess a decidedly mysterious, enigmatic character.
Throughout the 64 minutes that the CD lasts, we can hear traits
from styles like Trance, Industrial, Ambient and Dark Space
Sequencer Music. Also there are passages that get near to Medieval
music, others near to Psychedelic, and some very imaginative ones,
too difficult to label adequately. The electronic instruments
sound with unusual forms and therefore they turn out to be
remarkable enough. There are slow passages with other lively ones.
In the former, the structure is based on a dense electronic
texture, in a permanent evolution, with shades of sound that
change subtly second by second. In the latter, hard sequencer
rhythms and metallic percussion prevails. Immensity is the concept
that this album can evoke best in the imagination of the listener.
On the whole, the work is like a collection of dreams or
nightmares turned into music. "Cyclotron" is an album deserving
maximum admiration, and one which constitutes a perfect example of
artistic inspiration as well as technical mastery.
JORGE MUNNSHE

AT-MOOSS
The band At-Mooss create a powerful, imaginative electronic music.
To this end, they utilize an uncommon amount and variety of
technology, ranging from analog synthesizers to morphing
techniques. They have not been scarce on means when it comes to
shaping their artistic ideas, and thus their studio ressembles a
store of synthesizers and musical equipment. Yet they not only
have gathered devices, but also they know how to use them with
enough mastery as to succeed in developing the diverse aspects of
their artistic philosophy to the fullest potential.
Essential recordings:

-MORPHING SYNTHESIZERS-II
-MORPHING SYNTHESIZERS-III

KLAUS SCHULZE:
"LIVE @ KLANGART"
Rainhorse / Manikin
Consisting of 2 CDs, the total running time of this work amounts
to 137 minutes. Five blocks, each including several pieces, offer
us a kind of music like the kind of Schulze's style which was
usual in the nineties. Some themes are slow, with melodies that in
some occasions tend to be of an intense romanticism, while in
other instances they have an enigmatic, or even a dark air. Other
pieces turn out to have a quite energetic rhythm. The rhythmic
structure of the music tends to be based on the sequencers as a
general rule, as well as on the percussion typical of pop.
JORGE MUNNSHE

spectacular concert tours.

Various:
"MUSIC FOR THE 3rd MILLENNIUM Vol. 3"
AMP Records
In this collection of wonderful electronic music released by the
label AMP Records, there is a varied stylistic content, although
more or less it can be framed within the Space music. The contents
of this CD is: Robert Schroeder: "Sax Delight", Vincent Clarke &
Martyn Ware: "Massive", Damo Suzuki's Network: "Manager
Cinderella", Geoff Downes New Dance Orchestra: "Shadows, Pts. 7 &

Feat. Alquimia: "Remote Viewing", Mario Schoenwalder, Detlef
Keller & Bas Broekhuis: "Wolfsburg Rehearsal", Harald Grosskopf:

strength, powerful sequencers, and atmospheres full of mystery.
The followers of Space Music will no doubt enjoy this album.
EDGAR KOGLER

Various:
"SYNTONIC WAVES Vol. 8"
Spheric Music
The label Spheric Music, a leader in the difusion of imaginative
Space Music, has released an excellent compilatory album that
gathers a selection of pieces from different artists. This is the
contents of the album: Klangwelt: "Blue Planet", Michael
Obermeier: "Color your emotion", Jonson: "Minimalism unfinished
2nd", Wild Element: "Sonic space", Gunnar Spardel: "Age of
silence", Gianfranco Grilli: "The Nile", Erik Seifert:
"Cosmonautic dream", Deep Tune: "Defered dreams", Palantír:
"Extinct is forever", Carola Kern: "Return to forever", Lambert
Ringlage: "Passing Images", Faralley: "out of my mind", Foreign
Spaces: "Laurasia". The themes here selected constitute a good
sample of the music by these composers.
EDGAR KOGLER

FANGER & SCHONWALDER (with LUTZ ULBRICH):
"ANALOG OVERDOSE"
Manikin Records
Thomas Fanger and Mario Sconwalder present us a work where rhythm,
atmospheres and melody are very well combined. The basic style
includes Space and Trance traits. Although there are some slow
passages, most of the music has a good rhythm, with a prevalence
of the sequencers in the rhythmic structures. This is a powerful
work, where the artists contribute their musical talent to achieve
a fresh, emotive sonic journey. Fanger and Sconwalder counted with
the special collaboration of Lutz Ulbrich, well known for his
success in the famous band Ashra Tempel. Ulbrich plays guitar on
three tracks.
EDGAR KOGLER

ELLEN BAND:
"90% POST CONSUMER SOUND"
XI Records
Throughout five pieces with a global running time of 61 minutes,
we witness a strange, hypnotic process of transformations of
sounds. Far from any common region of the musical universe, this
work is an island open to the most radical forms of
experimentation. Some of the pieces possess a certain
electroacoustic character, others approach minimalism, but no
known label could be applied to it.
DOMINIQUE CHEVANT

PHILIP CORNER:
"40 YEARS AND ONE: PHILIP CORNER PLAYS THE PIANO"
XI Records
This CD gathers 9 experimental works created by Philip Corner. The
structure of the music, solely performed with the piano, is very
slow and relaxed, with each sound vanishing into silence before
the next one comes.
VALERIANO GUIOL
