TANGERINE DREAM (4): THE MACHINERY WORKING LIVE

No doubt, Tangerine Dream is a legendary band within the
electronic genre and the musical avantgarde in general. Throughout
their long trajectory, they have explored unknown areas in the
music world, and have contributed to create the basis for a wide
variety of current trends.

In the eighties, TD initiated the stage of their
macroperformances, events that were not only musical, but also
including lights, images and varied visual effects.
An anecdote that illustrates the grandeur of their
performances is the one starred together with a London fire
brigade.
The performance they were preparing in a modern hall sited in
the outskirts of London included smoke onstage. During the
rehearsal that day they had to test the coordination with the
smoke effects as well, and so they did. The computerized fire
alarm of the hall was activated as the smoke was detected, and
three fire brigade lorries appeared.
When they saw that it was a false alarm caused by the smoke on
the stage, they tried to disconnect the smoke detector, so as to
avoid more unfounded alarms. However, it was impossible for them
to do so, as it was a programmed device they could not deactivate
due to certain technical problems.
Later, the alarm sounded once again, and once again the same
fire brigade appeared. They knew it was a false emergency, yet
they were legally obliged to appear every time the alarm sounded.
When that night the concert took place, and once again the
smoke covered the stage, once again the three fire brigade lorries
appeared. On some giant screens, images from space were projected
together with others from natural elements. Just at the moment
when the firemen entered running into the premises, the screens
onstage were precisely showing images of fire. So it appeared to
be a deliberate concordance and that TD had played a practical
joke on them, when it was sheer coincidence in actual fact.
The great amount of their tours caused that in some cases they
were forced to face fortuitous, rather unfrequent catastrophes, as
for instance an extremely strong storm that sank the stage.
That happened in Athens.
Due to the fact that they had to play for two nights in the
same place, as they finished their first performance they left all
their equipment ready on the stage so that everything was already
in place the following night.
Nevertheless, an extremely strong wind whipped the place.
A good part of the structure of the stage was blasted off.
The giant screens for projections were blown away by the wind
like sails from a ship, breaking free from their anchorages and
falling onto the stage.
The great vertical racks of equipment lost their balance and
fell on the keyboards. These were catapulted to several meters
away.
When the TD found out about the disaster, they believed it
would be impossible to give the concert.
They decided to try to rebuild their equipment and is if had
been a miracle, everything worked out just fine!
Some devices were barely spared a sure destruction, like for
example a computer terminal that had not quite crashed against the
ground as it had stayed hanging from its cable a mere few
centimeters! from the pavement.
Other instruments, most of them, functioned perfectly well
despite presenting multiple dents and the keyboards having lost a
lot of keys.
In such discouraging circumstances, and against all odds, the
concert could be held as scheduled.
No doubt, besides this, other drawbacks suffered by the band,
such as the blasting of the electric transformer that fed their
equipment to 200 volts from the American electricity of 110 in mid
performance, are meaningless indeed.
