INTERVIEW WITH MAX CORBACHO

Max Corbacho started a solo career in the Ambient scene of the
nineties. His amazing music soon attracted a remarkable attention.
His albums are full of daring ideas.

>>> How and when did your interest in music and your vocation as a
composer begin?

I began to get interested in music since I was very young, but it
was listening to old records by bands from the 1970's when I felt
the need to create. On the whole, all the artists in that era
fascinated me, from the legendaryPink Floyd to the most metallic
Led Zeppelyn of their first years. I started in Rock bands as a
guitarist... till in the early 1990's I abandoned everything so as
to create electronic music.

>>> Which is the process you usually follow to create a musical
piece?

I don't have a definite "method", yet I certainly have experienced
an evolution. Nowadays I use the sequencer less than I used to, I
intend my themes to become freer with respect to their rhythm and
tempo. Right now I divide my time into creating acoustic loops
from outdoor recordings and in the studio, and the creation of
rhythmic computer-generated grooves, and I then coverall that with
layers of synthesizers and it receives the final treatment.

>>> Do you consider yourself to be linked to a given musical label
in particular? Do you feel or have you ever felt influenced by
other musicians in your artistic task?

Certainly, yet I rather feel I am related to a current, rather
than to a given label. Obviously, the influence of such musicians
as Vidna Obmana, Robert Rich or Steve Roach is undeniable in my
work, and therefore I feel quite close to all the American ambient
space scenery,as well as its European representation with such
people as Alio Die, Mattias Grassow, Amir Baghiri, Temps Perdu,
etc.

>>> Which are your sources for inspiration when composing?

Basically my travels, outings and excursions to places where I
feel myself far from civilization: I was born and spent the early
years of my childhood in a small "cortijo", a typical country
household, in the province of Badajoz, and later I spent every
summer there during the following years. Somehow my subconscious
always wants to return to that place, and I continuously look for
places far away from noise to spend my free time, to photograph
them and somehow capture thrir atmosphere.

>>> Can you comment on what role Umberto Eco's literature played
in your album "Far Beyond The Immobile Point"? What did you want
to express in this album?

It was the first chapter what wholly captivated me. The poetic
vision of the universe Eco describes,
and the vision of the pendulum the main character has, as he
imagines how strings hold it stretching into infinity, up to a
remote place the imagines as the "immobile point", the place where
it is anchored, and around which the entire universe revolves,
inspired me profoundly..

>>> What led you to compose "The Resonant Memory of Earth"? Did
you propose to create a work related to Earth from the beginning?

Yes, in "The Resonant....." I finish some paths I started in
"Vestiges", and plan it as an analysis of my feelings, my
sensations at the moment of finding myself in some lost place in
the midsrt of nature. Actually, it is a question I meditate on,
wondering why many people like myself pick this call, poetically
referred to as "the resonating memory of Earth·, whereas others
never have this need
in all of their lives. I also need to contribute somehow to making
many people aware as they do not realise the harm they do to the
natural environment.

>>> Tell us about your relationship with Bruno Sanfilippo. Are you
planning to release an album together? What do you think of his
musical style?

Bruno and I are preparing a CD together, that's right. We have
connected very well at a personal level, and we have just had a
vacation together with our respective wives in the south of Spain.
We have the project of giving concerts jointly in the near future
and it even is possible that we create our own label. With respect
to his musical style, I believe there are several surprises in
store for his fans, and some of the traits that were suggested in
"Suite Patagonia", such as the taste for ambiences and atmospheric
music, are going to get a thoroughly important role in his future
works

>>> Can you comment something about the projects you are working
on and your plans for the immediate future?

Yes, basically, I am currently working on two new projects , one
being on a "techno-tribal" wave, based on rhythms generated via
computer, and another maybe somewhat darker, without percussion
and in a way following in the wake of "Far Beyond The Immobile
Point". Also, there is my collaboration with Bruno Sanfilippo, as
well as another two projects, one with Amir Baghiri and the other
with Ran Kirlian, a young musician from Valencia who appears to be
very promising indeed, having several surprises in store, in the
near future.

NEURONIUM:
"AZIZI"
Neuronium Records
Michel Huygen (Neuronium) shows once again his mastery with the
synthesizers. His music is, as usual, compelling, experimental at
times, avantgarde, true to his roots, full of ethereal ambiences,
and all this shows his very personal style in each piece. This
work is an expression of his experience of life, a self-portrait.
For example, the piece "Audrey in Africa" was composed by Michel
in memory of his friend the famous actress Audrey Hepburn. Quite a
number of the distinct aspects in Michel Huygen's style appear in
this album: from the Space airs, to Synth-Pop, New Instrumental
Music, and even the most cosmic side of Progressive Rock. This is
a very intense album, where it is obvious that Huygen has immersed
his five senses. The nine pieces have a symphonic melodic
character, with romantic parts and other mysterious ones. "Azizi"
is a work that emphasizes the capability of electronic music to
deeply penetrate the human soul, even more deeply than many
acoustic, conventional ways of making music. The forces of nature,
the sense of home, and the spiritual questions, take us to a
voyage through soundscapes as varied as life itself. The author
reflects his own experiences, providing each track with an
intimate air, at times relaxing, emotional, blissful, nostalgic
and even mysterious.

NEURONIUM / MICHEL HUYGEN
Michel Huygen is a Spanish synthesist of Belgian origin who began
his musical career by the early seventies, as a member of several
bands of psychedelic rock. In 1976, he founded the band Neuronium,
together with Carlos Guirao, Albert Giménez and other musicians
who soon after abandoned the band. Giménez left the band after
recording Vuelo Químico (1978), and Guirao also left after
Chromium Echoes (1982). Since then, Huygen is the only member of
Neuronium, accompanied by various musicians occasionally but
composing all the music himself. Some of his albums are signed as
Neuronium, and others with his own name. Huygen has composed movie
soundtracks, has designed synthesizer sounds, and has produced
some other musicians.

AMIR BAGHIRI:
"DREAMRESOURCES"
Neuronium Records
This CD contains nine themes of a slow development. Nine themes
that take us into the mysteries of uncountable, fantastic legends.
The music is cosmic, hypnotic, dark, with a structure ranging from
Ambient to mystic ritual music. Although the character of the
pieces is basically electronic, there also are some acoustic
instruments from ancient cultures. Amir Baghiri achieves in his
music a very effective, attractive and even meditative atmosphere.
No doubt, this is a fascinating album, highly reccommended to
those who seek something more on the line of current electronic
ambient.

SUZANNE CIANI:
"PIANISSIMO III"
Seventh Wave / Neuronium Records
Suzanne Ciani was a pioneer of electronic music in the early '70s.
Even if she has always been interested in exploring the new
technologies in music, she has never left out his classical
influences. "Pianissimo III" is her third album released within
the series "Pianissimo". In this album we find 15 compositions
where the piano is the star -and solo- instrument. The music
portrays an intimacy, a quality of deep feeling that reaches a
wide audience and creates an atmosphere of relaxation, calm, and
inner peace.
HECTOR JORDAN

SUZANNE CIANI:
"TURNING"
Seventh Wave / Neuronium Records
"Turning" is a beautiful romantic album by Suzanne Ciani, based on
the piano and synthesizers. It consists of 12 compositions, whose
stylistic range fluctuates between New Instrumental Music and
classical symphonism. All of them have been composed by Suzanne,
except for "Bird and Fish", composed by Chyi-Yu. Suzanne, who in
this album plays piano and synthesizers, is accompanied by Chyi-Yu
(vocals on "Turning"), Paul McCandless (oboe, English horn),
Michael Manring (bass), Teja Bell (guitar), Steven Kindler
(violin), Joseph Hebert (cello), Roberto (guitar), Matt Eackle
(flute), John Hernandez (V-Drum System), and Joe Anderson (guitar)
The result cannot be more convincing: a work of an extreme
sensitivity and introspection.
HECTOR JORDAN

SUZANNE CIANI
The American composer Suzanne Ciani was a pioneer of electronic
music in the early '70s. For years, she explored the possibilities
that the new technologies provided, and she created music for
numerous TV advertisements and other productions. In 1979 Seven
Waves was released, the first independent album in her stage as a
solo artist. By the mid '80s, she achieved international success
with her records. Since the late '80s, she has turned to the
acoustic instruments rather than the electronic ones, and has
showed that she is a very talented pianist.
Essential recordings:
-VOICES OF PACKAGED SOULS (& Harold Paris)
-SEVEN WAVES
-THE VELOCITY OF LOVE
-NEVERLAND
-HISTORY OF MY HEART
-PIANISSIMO

RUDY ADRIAN:
"STARFIELDS (SEQUENCER SKETCHES VOL.3)"
Groove
The 65 minutes of music of this album by Rudy Adrian are an
imaginative cosmic voyage. The artist provides us with a
marvellous collection of themes that can be framed within a Space
Sequencer style with some Symphonic-Classical elements. Though
there are slow parts, much of the music has a lively rhythm. The
melodies are usually warm, lively, epic, majestic. The music
softly flows onwards, floating towards otherwordly soundscapes, at
times with melancholy touches, at times optimistic, always
delicately expressive, communicating a wide range of feelings and
emotions.

NAVIGATOR:
"OCEANIC EMPIRE"
Groove
A wonderful work, this CD by Navigator. This is a powerful album,
where the artists (Kent Eskildsen, Jens Peschke and Tony Andersen)
contribute their musical talent to achieve a fresh, emotive sonic
journey. The music, of a Space style, is based on the use of
powerful sequencer rhythms and spectacular orchestrations with
synthesizers. The melodies usually are warm, lively, in an
atmosphere typical of a soundtrack for an adventure movie. There
are dark, mysterious passages. Others turn out to be epic,
majestic.
