As the RSS feed doesn't appear to be working right now, I thought I'd
announce Duruflé's Requiem, which I have just added. Nothing new, as
it's The Cherwell Singers in Exeter College, Oxford - but a pretty good
performance I would say. The whole work is there, in three large files.

There is also a new file from Len (a Mendelssohn String Quartet
movement), and a couple from a new contributor.

My apologies for the delay of the beta-test launch of the new site.

I am having problems with the windows uploader. The OSX version works
fine, but the windows version is having issues with domain name
resolution.

I could just release the OSX version... can I ask how many
beta-testers have access to OSX and would be willing to test the new
site?

My seed has a share ratio of just over 20 on that file, so if the other
three seeds have as well, that would be about 80 downloads.

All,

Ok. Lets go with the OSX only version of the Uploader for now. I'll
stop trying to find workarounds for the windows Uploader until I get
the OSX one out.

I need to do a few administration things before releasing the new site
(like associate domain to IP, setup emails etc.) and then we can start
testing. I'm hoping this will take about 2 days.

hmmm ... I just checked the stats on the torrent tracker. It also says 859.

I'm not going to try and fix this for now.

Again, I do realise that it reflects poorly on the site, and I do
apologise for the decay in Ambisonia. The one-man-team effort just
isn't enough to hold it together. One paid part-time resource of 1 or
2 days a week (on top of my efforts) is what I'm aiming at with the
new site. This resource will be focused on maintenance/polish. Wont
come on board till 6 months or so from now (i.e. when a bit of cash
flow can support them).

Gentlemen,

The new Ambisonia is called SoundOfSpace.com. I'm calling it a gamma
release (pre-beta). Only those with accounts can use the site ...
until we move out of gamma into beta.

I will email Aaron, John and Daniel (OSX testers) shortly after this
email, the details of how to create an account. Anyone else who would
like to gamma-test on OSX, please let me know.

Essentially, what there is to test is:
1) Uploading an amb file
2) Going to the uploaded-file page using the link supplied by the Uploader.
3) Testing the 2 transcodes (both streaming from browser)... note, the
'AV Receiver' version wont work out of the box with Quicktime unless
you install Perian.
4) Testing the 'playlist' feature on the front page.

The Uploader has been implemented in a new GUI technology called
Shoes. I've adopted this technology a bit early... so there are quite
a few rough-around-the-edges things to report regarding the uploader.
Please do report everything you think is worth reporting. There's
bound to be stuff I dont know about.

There will be a new version of Shoes (fixing many bugs I have
reported) in May ... so I'm hoping to release a polished version of
the Uploader in May (including a windows and linux version).

Please report bugs this list.

regards,
Etienne

I should add, for the gamma testers, that the bulk of the ambisonic
files submitted under the names 'etienne' 'kath' and
'longnameduserhere' ... are just tests, and will not play anything.

Also, you need quicktime 7.6 (I need to add that clearly somewhere).

Etienne,

So far so good, but I can’t make the ‘create .amb file’ section of the uploader work. I get the spinning wheel, and the Create button highlights blue, but no file is created. I’ll make an amb file using the usual tools in an hour or so and try the uploader.

Hi Etienne,

I have uploaded a file and can play it with the embedded player. Woohoo!

Some rough spots:

I encountered the same glitch Daniel reported by email. The confusing
flow is that you are immediately taken to a login screen, with no
indication that you have to validate via email before you can log in.

I downloaded the installer and am starring at the distribution
agreement. You may want to provide an option to print or save this.
I noticed that I cannot copy and paste the text and I cannot resize
the window to do a screengrab. And now that I've agreed to it, I
don't see it again when I start the uploader.

Cannot paste text into the user name or password boxes. Tab does not
advance from user name to password box. (in Motif you had to define a
"traversal order" to get tab to work).

OK,

I’ve uploaded a file, but it seems not to have made it intact. I’m on a very slow connection at the moment, so something may well have gone wrong somewhere.

I can play Aaron’s file with no trouble at all.

General comments:

  1. Can’t make the ‘create .amb file’ work.
  2. Tabs don’t work in the info page, or log in page.

Will investigate the upload problem when I have a better connection.

Very good so far: just need to get the .amb creator to work.

thanks everyone. I've made notes of all the reports.

An other test to try, if anyone is brave, it to upload 2 or more files

By the way,

There is currently no limit on uploads (and there will likely never
be). A restriction (for non-paying users) will be implemented within
the coming months, but it will not be on uploads, it will instead be
on downloads. That is, only the last 3 files uploaded will be
'consumable' (streamable, downloadable etc.).

So any uploaded data will not be lost ... in other words, feel free
to upload as much as you want.

Gentlemen,

Just to let you know.... The next version of the Uploader will most
likely be released at the end of May (I'm waiting for the next version
of the GUI platform 'Shoes'), and will hopefully include the windows
version.

In the mean time, I'll also be working up the site.

The aim being to release to the public once the pro-service/tipping
system is in place. Currently this is expected to be in around 3
months... August.

But please do use the site as much as you can in the mean time.

good question!

Since SoundOfSpace has a different license agreement, the migration
could not be done automatically. I need some kind of "OK" to do it. An
email is probably sufficient.

Its not going to be 'technically' easy (old site is in Python, new
site is in Ruby) ...

I think the best way to do this is via the Uploader's batch-upload
feature... yes, the Uploader has a kind of batch-upload feature. Its
not fool-proof, but let me explain how it works.

Before actually uploading to Amazon S3, any new uploads are first
written to a text file called ~/SoundOfSpaceUploader.properties. The
uploading then happens directly off the info contained in this text
file. In other words, you can add dozens of new uploads into
SoundOfSpaceUploader.properties, and then next time you launch the
Uploader and log in, they will automatically be uploaded. To see the
syntax that this file uses, just launch a new upload, then whilst the
upload is in progress, kill the uploader.... the details of the upload
will be saved to the text file.

What I'll do is I'll see if I can export the details of the existing
Ambisonia content into a text file ... then I can pull out each
person's files, and do migrations one by one...

I'll add a link to it in the Uploader.

hi all,

I'm curious:
What are the work-flows that people here use for editing their
Ambisonic sound-files (a or b-format) ?

What I'm wondering about is mainly basic audio editing functions such
as:
Trimming, splitting, normalizing, filtering etc....

and particularly in OSX.

Presently I use Audacity for basic editing functions, with mctools
for reconstituting mono files into .amb files.

The biggest problem with Audacity is that you can't export a 4-
channel file in one piece - you have to export mono files, then use
interlx to interleave them back into a multichannel file. However, I
don't know of any other free software that allows importing
multichannel files, then doing basic audio edits (such as trimming
files) across all channels simultaneously.

Does anyone have a better workflow? (particularly on OSX)

I'd be very interested in hearing your approaches...

cheers
Nick Mariette

The latest betas of Audacity allow you to export interleaved channels and are quite clever with it.

In Preferences, choose Import/Export and in the export choices frame at the bottom, check the box called Allow Custom Mix. Then when you export, it’ll present you with a series of options which will allow you to export multi-channel interleaved files up to 32 channels, I seem to recall. This has been available for some time, but you will need the latest version - 1.35 or 1.37.

John,

That's awesome!
Thanks for clueing me in on that.

I had been using Audacity 1.3.6, and I guess the option was there, but I hadn't found it, because I was still using the export multiple option, which was the only way not to do a stereo mix-down in the stable version.

Strangely, the upper output limit seems to be 31 channels.
(at least that's what I get using the slider with 4 input channels).

This will greatly improve the ease with which I can edit ambi files.

By the way, do you know if anything should be done to 4ch wavs output from Audacity, in order to make them proper .amb WAVE_EX format?
(I've not looked into the details of what that adds)

I use Audacity too for simple edits.  The clunkiness I feel is mostly related to having limited screen size; with a high-resolution display I suspect I'd feel quite happy with it as an editing environment.

For WAV to AMB, use "copysfx" from mctools.

Basic editing can be done in TwistedWave, $80. It can save to .amb file
format.

All,

I've added Google maps and comments to SoundOfSpace.com. The torrent
downloads also work.

Here's a rough timeline of the development of SoundOfSpace.com:

next 2-4 weeks:

- complete the 'Edit' form for ambisonic files,
- implement RSS feeds (for torrents, AAC and AC3). Including iTunes
compatible feeds,
- graphic design polish. General polish,
- migrate some old content.

next 4-10 weeks:

- implement ecommerce system,
- implement pro-accounts,
- implement tipping-system,
- final polish,
- public release.

Once released to the public, there will be performance tweaks, and a
general marketing effort under way.

Etienne,

Is the OSX up-loader for Intel machines only? I’ve tried a couple of times to install it on my G5 rig and just get a lot of error messages.
