For those of you in the NYC/norther NJ area, on Saturday February 7th at 8:00pm, the Hurdy Gurdy Folk Music Club Concert Series (www.hurdygurdyfolk.org) at the Fair LawnCommunity Center will present a special "co-bill" concert featuring singer-songwriters Antje Duvekot and Ellis (No, not Ellis Paul - read on...).
As President of the Hurdy Gurdy Folk Music Club I am thrilled that our club is able bring both of these outstanding artists to BergenCounty and provide our audience with an affordable opportunity to discover new and exciting acoustic music. The Hurdy Gurdy Folk Music Club produces BergenCounty's longest running acoustic music concert series, which began in Fair Lawn in 1981.
Antje's appearance at the Hurdy Gurdy will coincide with the release of a new CD - 'The Near Demise of the Highwire Dancer".
Sharing the stage with Antje Duvekot will be Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter Ellis, a rapidly rising star on the folk music circuit.Ellis created a "buzz" after being voted "Most Wanted to Return" at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and was invited to perform on the 2008 pre-festival preview tour of emerging artists. Since the tour the talented singer, songwriter and guitarist has been invited back to several of the nations top listening rooms including Club Passim, Cafe Lena, and P.A.C.E. as well as a formal showcase at the 2008 Folk Alliance Conference. She has also been asked to open for several established artists such as Patty Larkin, Richard Shindell, Cheryl Wheeler, and Todd Snider.
Ellis started performing the women's festival circuit in 2000, with regular performances at the Michigan Women's Music Festival and headlined the National Women's Music Festival in 2006. She has since made her debut at several folk festivals including the Loyalist City Folk Festival (Canada), the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival.
Although she tours nationally more than 130 dates each year, she continues to retain a devoted following in Minneapolis where she was voted Best Musician for five consecutive years and named 2007 Best Musical Artist by readers of the Minnesota Women's Press. She is also a favorite on college campuses, and students nominated her as 2006 Best Female Performer in Campus Activities Magazine.
The Fair LawnCommunity Center is located at 10-10 20th Street in Fair Lawn, NJ. Tickets for this concert are only $20 ($17 for Hurdy Gurdy members) and can be purchased online at www.hurdygurdyfolk.org or at the box office at the Fair LawnCommunity Center on the night of the concert.
Additional information can be received at the website or by calling the Hurdy Gurdy Hotline at (201) 384-1325.
I will try to find out for you. I think the background singers are
either Kate Klim or Meg Hutchinson or both. You might try them through
myspace. Send them a message. Good luck.
Peace,
Spang

Hi . . . I posted this question on the antjeduvekot.net site, but
either no one knows the answer, or simply no one is responding. Does
anyone here know those counter-lyrics that are being sung in the
background on the chorus of "Helpless Kiss?"
Thanks.

Hey-- I have a crazy idea.
Antje is playing in the MA area again in a couple of weeks.
The Nov. 4th show I can't make -- sadly (ok, NOT so sadly), I have
tickets to see the Decemberists. BUT she'll be returning again to the
ME And Thee Coffee house in Marblehead. WHICH I can't see missing...
Anyway.
I'd like to see this flourish as more of a community, rather than just
an information link. We've already got Antje's official sites, and
her fan website to cover the news, etc. I'd like this to be more
about the FANS than the artist. Of course, share stories about her,
talk about her etc. But, have this be more FUN. Work out carpools to
shows, maybe organize meeting before shows, gaining "concert buddies",
etc. Heck-- maybe even plan a meeting to include Antje for dinner or
something! Who knows where this could go!
Anyway. My crazy idea:
In the Hey Days of my Antje Fandom, my daughter and I used to put
together little gift baskets, etc. to give her at every show we went
to. Once we just got her a basket of flowers, another it was a basket
of candies and goodies, and another were homey things for when she was
on the road (mini incense burners, candles, mug with cute stuffed
bear, coffee, tea, etc.).
Would anyone have any interest in maybe pitching in and surprising her
when she comes back to MA again? Puting together another little
basket o' goodies for her?
--Just a thought... :-p
-Tania
Hi . . . I know this group's a little light on activity, but I
thought I'd share Antje's setlist from her show here in San Diego
last week when she opened for Ellis Paul.
Dandelion
Christian Boys
Jerusalem
Pearls
Long Way
Famous Blue Raincoat (Leonard Cohen)
I didn't stay very long into Ellis's set, since I'm not a fan of his
and I was really there to see Anjte (my first time!). I was talking
to a couple of other folks who also said they were there for her, so
that was nice to hear.
"Christian Boys" is a fantastic song. I'd heard her do it on a WUMB
radio broadcast, and it was really great to hear it again.
Take care,
RG
Hey All!
Since we're all making introductions, I thought I'd pipe up a bit.
I'm Tania-- I've been a big fan of Antje's for coming close to 3 years now.
My daughter has even grown to love her, and at the age of 5 recorded her own
rendition of "Dandelion"... somehow she finds a way to sing, "and I will always
BEER... Dandelion..."
This group needs to revamp itself.
There are quite a few Antje Duvekot fan clubs out there. What can WE provide
you
with that they just aren't yet?
A form of Networking? Not just news and clips of Antje, but actually form more
of a
community? Carpools to shows? Extra-ticket help? Etc?
Let me know what you think!!

Indie Music Festival for World Peace Lineup
By J.C. Lockwood
Friday, October 22, 2004
Aaron Perrino, perhaps best known for "Dear Leader," his latest project,
which was nominated for three Boston Music Awards, or Sheila Devine, the
band that could-have, should-have made it. His is still the voice of
dissent, with songs like "A Billion Served" and "Raging Red" combining
cultural criticism and, darn it, catchy, melodies.
Boris McCutcheon had been collecting the pieces of his musical mosaic long
before he picked up a guitar 15 years ago. He's an organic farmer and an
irrigation designer. He writes songs with organic, gritty beauty, but
they're not precious. He doesn't like precious. He depicts the natural
world, walls built by human hands, and emotions, and characters cloaked in
sadness with piercing imagery.
Mieka Pauley, who won the prestigious Rocky Mountain Folk Festival
songwriting showcase, has a voice that ranges from haunting, delicate
beauty to an explosion of shattering, soaring soul. Her roots are the
blues, classic soul and R&B, rock, and folk, and the result is a sound that
blends and transcends these genres into a personal brand of pop music
that's uniquely her own.
Noam Weinstein began playing guitar at the age of 8 and performing at
venues such as Club Passim as a teenager. In 1999 he headed for New York
and became involved in the Greenwich Village songwriter's exchange led by
Jack Hardy. He has released three albums of original material in the past
three years.
Antje Duvekot. She has been described as a cross between Tracy Chapman, Ani
di Franco and Shawn Colvin. Her songs are stunning paintings of color and
shade and always generate the heat and light that real art should. In an
unpoetic and in-your-face world, she is lyrical and subtle.
Tiger Saw. Local favorites, this band has it all: Lush, beautiful
harmonies; crisp, fresh lyrics with real emotional weight; little hard-won
truths. The sound on "gimme sweetness/gimme danger," the band's latest
release on Kimchee Records, is a little more aggressive, at least within
the context of the band, but remains true to the concept: Beautiful
male/female harmonies, wailing distant guitars and heartfelt, poetic lyrics
about heartache and disappointment.
JR Gallagher, the Tiger Saw guitarist, heads up his new project, called the
Divorced, which includes fellow TS alum Matt Kulick and Jason Anderson.
Dan Blakeslee is a musician and visual artist from Portsmouth, N.H. He
writes and arranges all original compositions, and designs and illustrates
his album covers and flyers. His signature artwork is as easily recognized
as his voice: cool, energetic imaginative.
Jason Anderson. His music? Sometimes acoustic, sometimes electric. Folky,
but catchy. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad. Always honest. Often
triumphant. There is an emphasis on passionate live performance. And
connecting. And feeling awesome.
Sam Rosen, up-and-coming songwriter, talented lyricist and arranger.
The concert runs Oct. 30, 5-10 p.m. at the Masonic Temple, 31 Green
St., Newburyport. Tickets are $12 for adults, or $7 for students and
seniors, and can be purchased at www.thecampfire.org or at the door. For
information, call Mark Rosen executive director of the Campfire, at
978-764-4364 or e-mail mark@....

Here is the full Mountain Stage press release--
GRAND PRIZE WINNERS of 2004 MOUNTAIN STAGE NEWSONG CONTEST ANNOUNCED
Charles Town, WV_ Co-writers Freddy Bradburn and Chelsea Richardson won the
Grand Prize in the 2004 Mountain Stage NewSong Performing Songwriter
contest for their tune "Cartoonland," which also won Best Song in the
contest. "I am speechless. We never expected to win and it is a great
honor. I am proud of Chelsea - we had no idea where our collaborations
would go," said Bradburn.
Winners of the contest, sponsored by Performing Songwriter magazine, were
announced Saturday, Aug. 21, on the main stage of the NewSong Festival,
held on the grounds of the historic Claymont Court estate, near Charles
Town, West
Virginia, from Aug. 20 to 22. More than 800 performing songwriters entered
the contest from around the country and from several foreign countries.
Vikki Genfan of Fairview, N.J., took 2nd place with "Eleanor." Carmella
Scott of Los Angeles, placed 3rd with "Ole Country Girl." Amy Fairchild of
Wakefield, Mass., took 4th with "Mr. Heart." And Antje Duvekot of Brooklyn,
N.Y., came
in 5th with "Pearls."
"There was an enormous pool of talent in our contest this year," said
Mountain Stage NewSong Festival Director Gar Ragland. "The NewSong contest
has proven highly effective in identifying talented, emerging artists from
an array of
genres."
The finals of this year's contest were judged by such notables as Billy
Zero, host of XM Satellite Radio's "Unsigned" program; Larry Groce, host of
the Mountain Stage program; Chris Sampson and Chris Tetzeli of ATO Records;
producer
Ben Wisch; ASCAP Membership Representative Dan Keen; and NewSong headline
acts Susan Werner and Darrell Scott.
Keen described "Cartoonland" as emotionally stunning. "The song starts with
a little girl watching TV. In the 2nd verse, her parents are fighting in
the next room and the song takes a serious and gripping turn. They captured
the detachment a child would have to embrace to survive parents violently
fighting. It was very chilling to me."
Darrell Scott, a multiple-Grammy nominated songwriter for performers who
range from the Dixie Chicks to Keb' Mo, said the presentation added to its
power.
"The song was well written from the point of view of a child. By having a
young girl perform the song was killer juxtaposition. The song would not be
the same sung by an adult. The song became more believable."
Bradburn is a music educator in Marion, N.C., and Richardson is an 8th
grade student. Richardson is a long-time guitar and piano student of
Bradburn, and helps him with school programs on storytelling and song
creation. They met
when she was in 4th grade during a school program on songwriting. They
entered the winning tune in the NewSong Contest just to see what would
happen, said Bradburn. "If we won, we could be on Mountain Stage-- as if
that could actually happen, ha-ha."
It did happen. They won $500 and an appearance on a festival-ending
performance of "Mountain Stage." They performed "Cartoonland" at the show
on August 22
at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, sharing the stage
with headline acts Junior Brown, the
Darol Anger Fiddle Ensemble, and performing songwriters Lisa Loeb, Ellis
Paul and Devon Sproule.
Now in its 21st year, "Mountain Stage" is heard on more than 200 radio and
TVstations worldwide and soon will be broadcast on XM Satellite Radio. The
Mountain Stage NewSong show will be broadcast on radio in the first or second
week of October.
For more details on this year's NewSong Festival, the date of the NewSong
broadcast and other festival and contest news, visit www.newsongfestival.com.

Tickets for these shows at Passim sell out pretty quickly; I would get mine
online
ahead of time, if possible. I almost didn't get into the last show! Or,
rather, my
daughter almost couldn't get in... but since she's so small, and too cute to
resist, they let her in anyway :-p

Not sure of who's on this list, but... I'll introduce myself anyway :)
My name's Tania; I live in Fall River, MA. And yes, I'm a fan of Antje
Duvekot's!
(this would probably be more appropriately used as a sort of AA meeting, in my
case!)
"I've been listening to Antje for... 10 months now!! *sob*sob* and I'm not
ashamed
to admit it!!
Oh! And I want to thank "Mr. Spang" for setting these up!! I forgot all about
yahoo! groups!
I've been trying to get a "Fanclub" website going that I can afford to keep up!
Hopefully, it'll have all kinds of cool stuffs on it, like pictures I took at
shows,
show updates, links to here, etc. :-p
While I'm here... anyone planning on going to any of the upcoming shows? I'm
going
to the PA Folk Festival... would be nice if others are going so that I'd "know"
someone else there... :-p
Well, that's all I've got for now. Well, no, it's not. But I don't have the
heart
to subject you to anymore... :)
Hey-- someone should get the Star Herself on this list!! :-p
Amor e Paz,
Namaste,
Tania
