Good morning! The 2009 edition of the All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir will be arriving at the Rhodes Center today. The Staff arrived yesterday, and have been busy at work.
You can follow the 2009 Choir's progress, write them messages, take a look at the schedule, and check out the Alumni Day festivities at AOSFYC.com .
Hello to all from your friendly Pen Pal coordinator! It's time to assign Pen Pals for the 2009 Edition of the choir. I have the list of choir members and I'm ready to match people up! We all have such great memories of the time we spent on the fairgrounds, and we all still enjoy sharing stories and experiences from our time in the choir. Why not share those with a current choir member? No one appreicates our passion for the choir than those experiencing it day in and day out during the run of the fair. Once again, I am hoping to match every choir member with an Alumni Pen Pal. I have my fingers crossed that I'll get so many people who want to participate that we can include the staff and CIT's this year as well. Why shouldn't they get mail and enjoy the correspondance of a pen pal? Numerous records for mail delivered and pen pal participation were broken last year. Let's set our sights even higher this year!
Everybody looks forward to receiving mail during the fair, so please consider supporting the 2009 edition of the choir by having a pen pal (or 2... or 10!) Just imagine the smiles you could bring to their faces! It takes as much or as little effort as you choose to put into it, so don't think you're too busy to participate. We make it even easier by giving you access to a webpage through which you can send messages. You're probably on your email every day anyway, so please consider taking a moment to make a choir member's day a little more special.
If you're interested, please shoot me an email expressing your interest in participating in the pen pal program for 2009. Please include any special requests you may have (ex - voice part, county, school, # of years in the choir). I will do my best to match you with a choir member(s) who meets your requested criteria. Also, please indicate how many pen pals you're willing to take. One last thing, let me know what years you were in the choir. I'm interested in tracking those statistics to see how many years we can span!
I look forward to hearing from each and every one of you! Start thinking of creative ideas to brighten the day for these special singers. You'll benefit from this as much as they will. Feel free to ask any questions you may have, and please send your responses to me at kkit929@...
Thanks!

Date: Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 6:25 PM Subject: LOOKING FOR RETIRING CHORALE/CHOIR DIRECTORS FOR TURNER DOC SERIES To: admin@...
To Whom It May Concern,
I am a Segment Producer based in Los Angeles. I am currently working on a pilot for an hour-long documentary series, FIRST & LAST for Turner Network Television .
This inspiring show will deal with first and last experiences in people's lives and will profile the stories, personalities, and emotions of the people involved in these wide ranging defining moments.
They will come from all walks of life and will reflect different genders, ages, backgrounds and life situations. For example, we might profile a teacher who is retiring after 30 years of service or an individual who is becoming an American Citizen on their first day of citizenship.
One of the main stories we would like to focus on is a chorale director or choir leader who is retiring after many years. We are hoping that you may be in touch with various people who might know of someone.
Unfortunately, we are on a tight deadline and hope to film sometime between now and Dec 19th. We could also possibly consider a story if it was taking place in the early part of January.
I am thankful for your time and support with this time sensitive project. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for us or if I can answer any questions. I look forward to hopefully discussing this with you further.
Let me know that you received this email.
FYI see a brief synopsis of the project below.
Thank you!!!!!

FIRST & LAST A Documentary Series about Real Life
There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle. -- Albert Einstein
FIRST & LAST will capture real people experiencing some of the most memorable and powerful, first and last moments of their lives. We will capture both the excitement of first experiences and the mixed emotions of experiences coming to an end.
FIRST & LAST is an hour-long documentary series that profiles the stories, personalities, and emotions of the people involved in these wide ranging defining moments. The people profiled will come from all walks of life and will reflect different sexes, ages, backgrounds and life situations. Whether it's a sports team going to the World Series for the first time, or a Fireman on his last day after 30 years, we'll spend time filming each featured subject to capture that once-in-a-lifetime emotion.
Every person experiences his or her first and last moment in different way. Each experience is unique, as no two people are the same. The first day for a soldier serving his country overseas might be terrifying to one person -- a long awaited dream and enlightening for another. We'll watch a surgeon as he/she prepares and performs the first ever surgery of its kind. Well see a man's first day of freedom after serving a long sentence for a crime not committed. We'll see a conductor wave his baton for the very last time for his final performance. Well meet a fifth grade teacher who is retiring after 25 years of service. We'll follow a famous football coach taking his underdog team in to the Superbowl final for the first time, or indeed taking his hugely successful team out on pitch for the very last time.
FIRST & LAST will bring you joy and laughter, wonder and amazement.
FIRST & LAST will touch you and inspire you.
FIRST & LAST it's about real people, real stories, real emotions for those times in your life that will always remain FIRST & LAST.
FIRST & LAST Tone
Thoughtful, powerful, and entertaining. A documentary cinema-verite style show featuring the important firsts and lasts in peoples' lives. Sometimes funny, sometimes outrageous, and many times touching and heartrending. Big and small, funny and heartfelt. A show that takes on a whole range of human emotions. FIRST & LAST is always compelling, real, in the moment, happening right before our eyes.
Each hour-long episode will feature two big stories some firsts, some lasts. Periodically, we'll also revisit some of our more memorable stories to see what has happened to the faces we've met updates and follow-ups to continue some of our favorite stories. Also we may propose special hours that will encompass both a first and a last look on the same subject. For example the soldier shipping off vs. the soldier coming home or the addict just entering their first day of rehab vs. a person leaving rehab clean.
FIRST & LAST is consummate storytelling. Our cameras will follow each individual for a period of one to three days, capturing both the "big picture" as well as the small, personal moments that layer the experience of what the subject is going through. We will use personal photographs and interviews with colleagues family and friends to learn more about our individuals and build an understanding and personal connection in anticipation of their first or last experience. We will actually witness and be on hand for the climactic First and Last experience.
There is no narration: each story tells itself through filmed interviews, both static and active, images, stills and the voices of the people involved. Using a variety of formats and cameras from Super 8mm to HD to still photography, the idea is to take a journey with the person as if watching a beautiful film of their experience unfold before us. We will interweave visual portraits of our individuals to emphasize emotion, wide shots of our many locations to set the scene, that along with stylistic shooting will create a visually and viscerally stirring mosaic. There are no re-enactments. The stories are unfolding as we film them.

Quartets of singers from more than a dozen high schools will converge at the Rhodes Center on Saturday, November 15, for the first All-Ohio Choral Festival. The singers, led by Youth Choir staff members, will work on an eclectic program of choral literature. While all the singers will be new to the Youth Choir, the Youth Choir's Cardinal Chorale will be in residence as the demonstration ensemble. The day will include part and full rehearsals, a session on vocal care, master classes for teachers, and shared meals in the Rhodes cafeteria. The festival finale will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Rhodes Center Auditorium, and will open with a performance by the Cardinal Chorale, followed by the Festival Choir and then a finale featuring both groups. The concert will conclude by 8:00 p.m.
An account to fund a scholarship for the 2009 AOSFYC in loving memory of Daniel A. Duncan has been established, thanks to two initial gifts. Other gifts for this purpose are welcomed, and may be made payable to AOSFYC Alumni Association. Gifts given to the Youth Choir through the Alumni Association are tax deductible. Daniel, an enthusiastic member of the 2007 AOSFYC, was from Norwalk. Although he couldn't be in the 2008 Choir, Daniel drove down to sing in the Demonstration Concert on Friday of rehearsal week. Daniel's exuberant spirit, his passion for music, his contagious laugh, his concern for others, his love for family and friends, his strong faith and the powerful witness of his life drew others to him - in his home town, at the OMEA District II Festivals, in the Youth Choir, and in his new community at West Virginia Wesleyan.
Hello on Day 13 of AOSFYC 2008! Hopefully, by now you have had a chance to see the Choir live ... or at least follow their progress along on the daily blog (http://www.aosfyc.com/aosfyc2008/Blog/Blog.html ).
If you haven't already written your favorite 2008 AOSFYC member or staff person, please join the more than 300 people that have written some 900 messages via the web to date! We have already shattered all previous records and now are wondering when we will break the 1000 message mark! You can write a message to a Choir member at http://www.aosfyc.com/forms/j/index.php?option=com_chronocontact&chronoformname=write_a_member .
We hope to see you on Saturday at the fairgrounds. If you can't make it (and even if you can) write us an update on what you've been up to on our Message Boards (http://www.aosfyc.com/messages/ )!!
The countdown clock at aosfyc.com is showing that there are two days until the start of AOSFYC 2008 (one day if you are reading this on Wednesday morning). The staff has moved in, and they are getting ready to receive the new Choir.
Thank you to everyone who has already responded regarding the pen pal program for the 2008 choir members. I've had a great response, and I love everyone's enthusiasm! I will be sending out the names of your pen pals within the next couple days. I will also provide all the information on how to access the site from which you can email choir members, the address for sending mail to the fairgrounds, the beginning and ending dates of delivery of emails from the website and the delivery dates of actual mail. I will also give some tips and ideas for those who are new to the program. Once you find out how many pen pals you have been assigned, if you feel you can take on more, please let me know.
For those who did not respond to the first request for pen pal participants... I would ask that you please consider being a part of this great program. Though I've had lots of people request pen pals, I still have over 100 choir members to assign. Since I can't take all of them by myself, I'm asking all of you to help me out! Please send me an email at kkit929@... if you are interested in having a pen pal in this year's choir. The choir moves in on Thursday, July 24th, so time is of the essence. If you have any questions or concerns that are holding you back, feel free to ask me anything! I urge everyone to be a part of this unique program. It's a great way to continue your connection with the choir and contribute as Alumni. I look forward to hearing from you ASAP so we can ensure every member of the 2008 choir has a pen pal. Thanks in advance for your willingness to become involved! Email me at kkit929@....
Thanks!

And finally, please consider paying your Alumni Association dues. It is through your dues that we can continue maintaining this web site, provide programming for alumni, and support the current Choir. You can pay your dues at http://www.aosfyc.com/Store/membershipdues.html .
It's that time of year again when high school singers all over the state of Ohio pack up and move to the fairgrounds to be a part of an unbelievable experience - the All-Ohio Youth Choir. We all remember it well and have fond memories of our time in the choir. Don't we all love to share those with others and reminisce of our time spent at the Ohio State Fair and beyond? A great way to celebrate and encourage the members of the 2008 choir is by becoming a penpal. Everybody looks forward to receiving mail during the fair! Just imagine the smiles you could bring to their faces! It takes as much or as little effort as you choose to put into it, so don't think you're too busy to participate. We make it even easier by providing a web page that you can use to write your penpal. You're probably on your email every day anyway, so please consider taking a moment to make a choir member's day a little more special.
If this sounds like something you'd like to do, please send an email to kkit929@... expressing your interest in being a part of the penpal program for 2008. Please include any special requests you may have (ex - voice part, county, school, # of years in the choir). I will do my best to match you with a choir member(s) who meets your requested criteria. Also, please indicate how many penpals you're willing to take. I would really like to find a penpal for every choir member. We don't want to leave anyone out!
I look forward to hearing from each and every one of you! Start thinking of creative ideas to brighten the day for these special singers. You'll benefit from this as much as they will. Feel free to ask any questions you may have, and please send your responses to me at kkit929@...
Thanks!

Want to help the alumni association? How about donating a couple dozen cookies or if you are out of town, but still want to give us some help, send a small gift card from Kroger, Wal-Mart or Giant Eagle. TheAlumni Association is again having a welcoming table of cookies and drinks for all the parents dropping off the new 2008 All-Ohio Youth Choir on July 24. This would be a great way to show some support and let the new choir families feel welcome. Alumni Board member, Jenn Morrow is again in charge of this event and would love to hear from anyone. You can email Jenn at fairchoirchica@.... We know that in the past a few members from out of state found this an excellent way to help. We hope you can too.

This is a brief update of upcoming events for the Youth Choir, Chorale, and the Alumni.
Start Marking your calendars now with the following dates. We hope that you may be able to attend an upcoming concert or join us for events leading up to the fair.
Thursday, December 27 @ 7:00 is the Chorale concert at the Epiphany Lutheran Church in Pickerington, OH (268 Hill Rd. N.(SR 256) This is a great time to catch up with old friends over Christmas break!
If you missed the fair this summer and would like to hear the choir or didn't get enough of them this summer, come to the Reunion concert sponsored by the Coshocton Community Choir in Coshocton, OH. The date is Sunday, February 17 @ 3:00 pm at the Coshocton High School's McKinley Auditorium. Since it is President's Day weekend, it makes a nice get away weekend!
On March 15, 2008,
the Chorale will perform at Muskingum College @ 7:00 p.m. (more details will be posted later.
Now, let's think summer!!! Our annual cleaning day is set for Saturday, July 19.
This is a good time for all of you to help. (Yes, there is some cleaning involved), but also lots of time to get to know others and help get the dorms ready for the incoming choir. We always have plenty to do. We are also hoping to work on the float that weekend and will need some handy, crafty people to help us put this together before the fair opens. If you can help us out, please notify the alumni board as soon as you can.
Mark this date down: The 2008 Ohio State Fair starts Wednesday, July 30 and runs through August 10. (Yes this is earlier than the last few years, so mark it down now!
The Celeste Concert with the band and the choir is Sunday, August 3 (this is a free concert, so come and enjoy the airconditioning that day.)
Recruit Day is Friday, August 8.
Alumni Day is August 9, 2008. Registration starts at 9:00 and we are always looking for people to help with registration and a few past riser crew people could also help out get the auditorium cleared out after the afternoon meeting and memorial concert.
The next Alumni Board Meeting will be January 19, 2008 in Columbus, OH, please notify Cathy Banfield, President if you would like to attend. Depending on the number of people, depends on the exact location for this meeting. (It's usually at Karen's house)
We are looking for sponsors for the Flag and would like to have one sponsor for the float. Last year we were thankful to the '64, '65 European Choirs for sponsoring the float for the entire run of the fair. The cost for the float is $400 and runs the entire time of the fair. This helps offset the cost of the float and hopefully helps pay for our insurance for the year. The flag costs $50 a day to sponsor and we are hoping to fill the dates up soon and have this ready to go. Sorry, but July 30 and Aug. 9 are already taken, but we will be happy to reserve any other dates that may be good for you.
If you haven't yet paid your dues for the year, please think about taking care of that soon. Maybe you can ask someone to take care of this as a small Christmas gift.
Don't forget to log onto the website and use it to help keep in touch with others in the choir. I know facebook is the big thing, but if you want to keep the website going, you need to use it. Remember, your family and friends like using this during the fair to find out what is happening in your lives. This is also a great starting place for those trying to find other choir friends.
Now is the time to start planning your special reunion. If you need help with this, don't hesitate to contact us and we are happy to give you pointers on how to start finding people.
Finally, we are sad to pass on the news that Ronald Weldy, father of choir alumns Kathryn ('76), Kris ('80, Europe '81, Staff '89-'96), Kory ('88, Europe '89, Staff '89-'90) and Kurt ('82) Weldy passed away on Sunday, November 25, 2007 in West Jefferson, Ohio. Mr. Weldy was a graduate of The Ohio State University, where he lettered in track and football (under Woody Hayes). He had a distinguished 31 year career as an educator, coach and principal in West Jefferson. Read the full obituary at http://www.legacy.com/dispatch/Obituaries.asp?Page=LifeStory&PersonID=98732671
I think this is enough for now. Sorry for the internet Newsletter. Time is passing by too fast with the holidays already upon us and we wanted to let you know that we are still here and a regular newsletter will be coming soon.

Visitation is at the funeral home on Thursday, 4-8 p.m., and before the service
Memorial contributions may be made to the youth programs at Grace Community Church 522 Glenn Avenue Washington Court House, OH 43160
We would like to have all the Youth Choir Family sit together if you are going. Please arrive at the service by 10:30 ao that we can get organized. If you can't make it at that time that is alright too.
Our thoughts and prayers and with him and his family.
Thanks to all of you that were participants in the All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir's write a member/pen-pal program. This was the 3rd year of this opportunity to support choir members while at the state fair. We will definitely continue this program in the future!
Also this year, 279 individual e-mail addresses sent over 700 e-mails to choir members through our website. Special thanks to our mailman, Russ Mayer, for delivering all those messages!
And, finally, please mark your calendars: the 2008 Ohio State Fair will be July 30 through August 10. Alumni Day is scheduled for Saturday, August 9th ... and we want to see you there!
Please make sure to visit aosfyc.com and look around! Visit out message boards, register and leave a message or two, update your information ... this site is yours!!
If you have not made your way down to the Fair to check out the Choir, you can follow along in their progress through the Daily Blog. The Blog is at
http://aosfyc.com/aosfyc2007/Blog/Blog.html . It is updated every evening, and it contains photos and other good stuff.
You can check out the latest ... let us say ... spirited discussion on the AOSFYC at http://www.aosfyc.com/messages/ (the "AOSFYC Choir" forum has been especially active since Sunday).
The 2007 AOSFYC will arrive move into the Rhodes Center this Thursday!! As we prepare for another edition of the All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir ...
#1 The fair is almost here and we need your help, alumni! The pen pal program has been such a great way to connect people in the alumni association to the current choir. We are in need of MORE alumni to adopt a choir member. You can connect with them two ways via postal service or e-mail. If you would like to encourage, support and be a part of this activity please e-mail Russ Mayer at russm_oyc81@.... Please let him know any specifics such as voice part, high school, city and number of pen pals you would like. He will e-mail you your pen pal and the information you will need to complete your commitment. Check in day is Thursday, July 26th for this year's current choir.
#2 David Morgan, an OYC alumni from the 1981 choir, is seeking input on a possible choir karaoke night in conjunction with alumni day at the fair. He has posted a poll on the choir message board, and would like all those interested to please post replies. The link to the poll is: http://www.aosfyc.com/messages/viewtopic.php?t=877
We hope to get a group of alums together for some karaoke fun on Friday or Saturday of Alumni weekend. If we don't see you there, we will see you at Alumni Day: Saturday, August 11!
