TRIBUTE TO AUGUSTUS PABLO-
May 18th marks the passing of this great musician The
Countryside Club in Kingston, Jamaica will be host of
the first annual tribute to Augustus Pablo held on
Saturday, June 17, 2000, at 8:00 p.m.
The event will aide the Augustus Pablo Foundation, an
organization whose primary objective is to provide
funding for a scholarship-oriented, music education
program in Jamaica, geared towards primary and
secondary level students. It was Pablo's vision to
assist the many musically talented youths who are less
fortunate in educating themselves.
Truly a prolific musician, composer and producer,
Augustus Pablo passed away almost one year ago on May
18, 1999. Augustus Pablo never gained the international
recognition of Bob Marley, but Augustus Pablo is
undoubtedly one of reggae's legitimate legends. Along
with producer King Tubby, Pablo almost single-handedly
invented dub.
A special presentation by Mr. Desmond Young, President
of the Jamaica Federation of Musican, will be made to
Rockers International Records, in memory of Pablo's
contribution to Jamaica's music and culture.
Expected artists include Yami Bolo, Jah Bull, Spliffy
Dan, Dean Frazer, Derrick Harriott, Lloyd Hemmings,
Richie Mack, Sugar Minott, Tahir Mundell, (Son of the
late Hugh Mundell), Junior Reid, Leroy Sibbles, White
Mice and Willie Williams. Monty Alexander is trying to
work with his current tour schedule in order to be a
part of this event. The artists will be performing
songs composed by Augustus Pablo and musical renditions
of the "instrumental 'dub' style." The band will
include well-known musicians, Chinna Smith, Benbow,
Mikey Carroll, Bonito and Ranchie, among others.
The Augustus Pablo Foundation has already received
many individual responses of contribution and
sponsorship, and is proud to announce as sponsors the
Jamaica Federation of Musicians, who has fully endorsed
this project and programme of events; Greensleeves
Records (England), VP Records (New York/Florida), Ras
Records (Washington D.C.), Jet Star Phonographics
(England); and Internet Website, Reggaesource.com. A
host of radio disc jockeys and media personnel across
the world have pledged their participation via radio,
television, print and electronic medium.
