"As he never sought after commercial success, and very rarely toured,
Pablo never received the recognition that some of his more famous
countrymen accrued. Now, nearly 10 years after his death of a rare
nerve disorder, that might just change with the release of The Mystic
World Of Augustus Pablo: The Rockers Story, a four CD and single DVD
box set by his American distributor, Shanachie Entertainment Group."

THE ROCKERS STORY: THE MYSTIC WORLD OF AUGUSTUS PABLO
BOX SET PRESENTS COMPREHENSIVE LOOK AT THE GENUIS OF AUGUSTUS PABLO AS COMPOSER
PRODUCER AND MUSICIAN
FOUR CD/ONE DVD PACKAGE PRESENTS RARE RECORDINGS PLUS FIRST OFFICIALLY RELEASED
PERFORMANCE FOOTAGE OF THE LATE PABLO
Augustus Pablo won world-wide acclaim as a reggae artist, credited as being one
of the great architects of dub music and creator of two of the greatest reggae
albums ever created: King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown and East Of The River
Nile. While his dub creations are among the greatest ever produced, Pablo's
talents as a composer of melodies, as an accomplished instrumentalist and as an
inspired producer of some of the most profound music ever created, were
expressed on both his own recordings and his productions of other artists,
especially singers. As a New York Times critic noted: "Pablo is more than a
gifted instrumentalist; he is a masterful pop composer whose recordings are
possessed by a reflective, almost mystical sadness." Ironically, despite this
recognition, only a relatively small portion of Pablo's artistic achievement is
widely known. The reason for this is simple: few people who heard the music of
the reclusive Pablo ever saw him in concert. Also many of his finest productions
were issued in small quantities and have only been intermittently available. On
June 17th 2008, just in time for Pablo's birthday later that week on the 21st,
Shanachie Entertainment will release The Rockers Story: The Mystic World Of
Augustus Pablo, a comprehensive four CD, one DVD box set with a twenty page
booklet including extensive commentary from writers in Jamaica, England and
America and many rare photos. As such it provides a definitive portrait of one
of the most extraordinary musical artists ever to grace the world scene.
The four CDs in The Rockers Story cover the gamut of Pablo's artistry, moving
from instrumental works to dubs to vocal productions. Disc 1 ("Classic Rockers")
focuses on many of the key recordings which established his reputation in the
early to mid-1970s, including such classics as "East Of The River Nile" and
"King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown," as well as his ground-breaking productions of
such major vocalists as Jacob Miller, Hugh Mundell and Leroy Sibbles of The
Heptones. Disc 2 ("Roots Rockers") presents a selection of deep roots reggae,
showing off his ability on clavinet and xylophone as well as his trademark
melodica. Such relatively obscure but talented singers as Earl Sixteen, Delroy
Williams, Paul Blackman and Norris Reid come to the fore here as well as his
collaborations with Lee "Scratch" Perry and Vivian "Yabby You" Jackson. Disc 3
("New Style Rockers") traces the evolution of Pablo's music into the 1980s and
later into the "digital" era. Included on the disc is his biggest hit in the
dancehall realm, Jr. Delgado's "Ragamuffin Year," as well as a re-working of his
breakthrough hit "Java" and a rare vocal by Pablo himself. Disc 4 ("Rockers
Rarities") presents his first released recording ("Higgy Higgy"), rare
recordings for other producers, and a selection of tracks highly sought-after by
collectors, some previously only available on vinyl (Pablo's "Twin Seal," Asher
& Trimble's "Humble Yourself" and vinyl-only extended mixes) as well as
previously unreleased works by Earl Sixteen and Lloyd Hemmings.
The DVD disc presents the first official release of video footage of Augustus
Pablo in concert performance, featuring one song each from his 1986 JapanSplash
appearance and from PitSplash, another Japanese festival. These are followed by
extraordinary, previously unreleased footage shot in Jamaica by Jerry Stein and
Jeff Roth, producers of the documentary Word Sound Power. These segments
capture Pablo and Hugh Mundell in a leafy glade by a river, Pablo playing guitar
and melodica and Mundell singing prayerful, chant-like songs. A short interview
segment with Pablo follows.
The booklet features commentary by: Lol Bell-Brown, co-author of Augustus
Pablo: Original Rocker, a discography and career overview, who gives a
perspective of Pablo's impact on the UK scene; Herbie Miller, who has served as
manager of such artists as Peter Tosh, Judy Mowatt and The Skatalites and served
as road-manager for one of Pablo's Japanese tours, gives a perspective of
Pablo's significance on the Jamaican music scene and Randall Grass, who wrote
one of the first American articles about Pablo in 1980 and knew him throughout
his association with Shanachie Entertainment. The booklet includes many
never-before-seen photos of Pablo as well as artists he worked with such as King
Tubby, Hugh Mundell, Jacob Miller, Jr. Delgado, and others. The box cover photo
is a luminous portrait of Pablo by noted photographer Kate Simon.
Augustus Pablo was born Horace Swaby on June 21, 1953 in Kingston, Jamaica where
his father was an accountant. As a youth, from his bedroom window he was
mesmerized by the reverberating music from the outdoor sound systems in
neighborhoods down the hill towards town and frequently snuck out of the house
to go and hear the music firsthand. He taught himself to play piano and by
secondary school was cutting class with future Wailers keyboardist Tyrone Downie
to practice on the chapel organ. Soon he was skipping school to prowl record
shops and recording studios in downtown Kingston, soon starting a sound system
of his own. In 1970, he was discovered hanging around Aquarius Records by
proprietor Herman Chin-Loy, who was fascinated by Pablo's uncanny ability to
play a melodica and brought the youth into the studio to blow melodica on some
instrumentals that were released under the name Augustus Pablo. Soon after,
Pablo's schoolmate, Clive Chin, the song of Randy's Records owners brought Pablo
to the studio to record. The resulting recording Java, became a major hit in
Jamaica and introduced Pablo's signature minor-key "far east" sound. An album
followed and Pablo became an in-demand session musician, playing piano, organ,
clavinet and melodica for many different producers.
By 1973 Pablo began releasing his own productions on such labels as Rockers, Hot
Stuff and Yard and later, Message. Pablo's productions featured ultra-heavy
rhythm tracks and unique textures and melodies, as well as "Roots-and-Culture"
lyrics on vocal numbers – all of which helped usher in the classic "Rockers"
style of reggae that dominated the golden age of roots reggae during the
Seventies. A close association with King Tubby, the inventor of dub music,
helped Pablo become one of the great exponents of dub music along with Tubby and
Lee Perry. Ignoring commercial trends, Pablo's music was highly respected by
reggae insiders and he began to develop a following in the UK and United
States. His landmark King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown album made tremendous
impact in 1976 while East of the River Nile, hit another peak in 1977. Reclusive
by nature and uninterested in fame or fortune, Pablo recorded only when inspired
and often retreated to a simple existence in rural areas of Jamaica. In the
Eighties his touring was infrequent, which only added to this mystique. As
reggae evolved into the "digital" era, Pablo continued to follow his muse,
nonetheless often experimenting with digital rhythms, sometimes in combination
with traditional Nyabinghi percussion. Often in ill health over the years,
Augustus Pablo died suddenly of complications from a rare nerve disorder in
Kingston in 1999 at the age of 46. The Rockers Story: The Mystic World Of
Augustus Pablo is testament that Augustus Pablo's rich legacy lives on!

>*Popular reggae musician Prendergast remembered*
>Shelah Moody, Chronicle Staff Writer
>Friday, June 3, 2005
>
>
>On April 1, the Bay Area lost one of its most prolific musicians. Fazal
Prendergast,
>a well-loved Jamaican-born guitarist who toured and recorded with many reggae
legends
>and led his own band in the Bay Area, drowned after his car veered off Highway
101 and
>plunged into the Eel River.
>
>Prendergast, 46, was a lanky man with cola-colored skin who was easily
recognized by his
>untamed locks and beaming smile that revealed a chipped front tooth. His band,
the
>Yellow Wall Dub Squad, formed by English bassist Amlak Tafari in 1999, was
touring and
>backing artists such as the Abyssinians, Sister Carol, Junior Jazz, the Mighty
Diamonds
>and Yami Bolo at festivals and clubs from the Bay Area to Europe.
>
>According to his close friend and manager, Robert Oyugi, on the day he died,
Prendergast
>was driving alone on his way to a gig in Arcata with reggae singer Don Carlos.
The
>previous night, Prendergast had played at a reggae bash at SoMa Arts in San
Francisco
>with Carlos and dance-hall singer Sister I-Live. Those who attended the event
remember
>Prendergast in good spirits.
>
>The accident occurred at about 1:30 p.m. in Piercy at the Humboldt County line.
It is
>unclear what caused his 1991 Mercedes Benz to swerve off the road before a
bridge and
>fall 150 feet into the river. The car immediately sank. Prendergast managed to
surface
>with his prized Fender Stratocaster and struggled to swim to shore. Bystanders
rushed
>to the banks of the river -- one person even went into the icy water in a
rescue attempt.
>But the current swept Prendergast downstream, eventually pulling him and his
guitar under.
>
>Prendergast's guitar surfaced. His body was found two hours later a quarter-
mile downstream.
>
>Oyugi, who lives in Boulder, Colo., and had been managing the Yellow Wall Dub
Squad for four
>years, was one of the first to hear the news.
>
>"He did not go back into the river to get his guitar," Oyugi said, trying to
dispel rumors
>that Prendergast died trying to save his guitar. "Most likely, the guitar was
used as a
>floating device, because it was in a soft case, which was buoyant. No one will
really every
>know."
>
>"He laid a foundation, so that we could continue, carry on," said Stevie Love,
who played
>rhythm guitar in Yellow Wall Dub Squad. "No one can take Fazal's place."
>
>Love recalled Prendergast's knowledge of the music business and his kindness.
>
>"He was a people person who was never really thinking about himself; he was
always thinking
>about other people," said Love, who had known Prendergast since they were
children in Kingston,
>Jamaica.
>
>Prendergast's career began in 1974 when he worked as a session musician with
composer Augustus
>Pablo and his Rockers International record label in Kingston. Rockers
International helped
>usher in the "dub" era (surreal, instrumental reggae with occasional vocals). A
popular
>session musician, Prendergast also recorded for Jamaica's prestigious Studio
One, Channel One
>and Bob Marley's Tuff Gong label. In 1983, Prendergast joined Earl "Chinna"
Smith's High Times
>Label and toured with Jamaican poet Mutabaruka and the High Times Players.
Prendergast played
>rhythm guitar on Mutabaruka's albums "Dub Poets Dub" and "Out Cry."
>
>During a recent book signing in the Bay Area, Mutabaruka recalled Prendergast's
wilder days
>on tour in Europe during the 1980s. Once, while traveling to a show in Genoa,
Italy, Mutabaruka
>told the band to get rid of their marijuana before they reached the border and
warned that they
>would be turned back if officials found anything.
>
>"When we reached the border, the officials came onto the bus and let the dogs
on," Mutabaruka
>said. "They found no herb in the bus, but the dogs smelled the ganja. Every
time, it was Fazal
>they went to. It was Fazal who argued with the men and cussed and went on bad.
(The officials)
>turned the bus upside down, and we ended up missing the show. It was the first
show that I
>missed in my life.
>
>"Fazal was one of my wonderful brethren," Mutabaruka said.
>
>In 1991, Prendergast settled in the Bay Area and formed his production company,
Venus One, with
>Colette McGeough, his longtime partner and mother of the couple's 9-year-old
daughter, Deardhra.
>
>"He was like a bright star that burned fast and quick," McGeough said. "In the
short period
>that I've known Fazal, it's like we condensed more into those 12 years than a
lot of people
>could live in many lifetimes."
>
>On a cold April night at McGeough's home in Middletown (Lake County),
Prendergast's friends and
>family gathered to share memories as Deardhra and Prendergast's Tibetan
terrier, Bright Eyes,
>raced through the house.
>
>McGeough's living room was warmed by a fireplace and filled with flowers from
well-wishers.
>The mantles were adorned with photos of Prendergast and his guitar.
>
>"It's been really tough for Deardhra because Fazal just adored her, and she
adored him,"
>McGeough said. "He was the favorite, and I was the disciplinarian. She's very
tough,
>and she's taking it bit by bit."
>
>McGeough, from Castleblayney, Ireland, and Prendergast met as roommates in San
Diego.
>Prendergast was a flirt, McGeough said, a romantic and a dreamer. They shared
an
>interest in the supernatural.
>
>"He had real psychic powers," McGeough said. "In Ireland, we have superstitions
>about everything and beliefs about everything that are not quite on this plane.
>Fazal was the first person I met who had even more extreme views in that way.
>He always encouraged me. Everybody else was always telling me, 'You need to
base
>yourself in reality.'
>
>"Fazal was very prophetic. He could tell me what would happen in the future.
>He told me that he would die before me. He told me where to put his guitar
>and which pictures to enlarge. All the time I was with him, he'd have me
>record him. He had so many things on video. He really had a sense of what
>was going to happen.
>
>"I didn't have that sense. I thought he was going to live until he was 92.
>His great-grandmother was over 100, and she just died."
>
>Life with Prendergast was an adventure, McGeough said. On the weekends,
>the couple, who moved from Guerneville to Middletown in 2004, would walk
>barefoot on the beach. Although the two were estranged at the time of his
>death, McGeough expressed love and admiration for her partner of 12 years.
>
>"Apart from being a musician, he could cook. He'd cook salt fish, akee
>and sorrel -- all the Jamaican dishes," McGeough said. "He was teaching
>Deardhra to sew; he was teaching her how to make doll clothes. He could
>draw and tell stories. There was a whole different dimension to him.
>Music was one aspect of his creativity."
>
>Prendergast grew up in Kingston's close-knit Mountain View district. His
>stepfather recognized his music potential when he was about 15 and sent
>him to the teacher who instructed Bob Marley. Michael Prendergast, who
>last saw his brother in 1987, recalled when, after school, they would
>watch Marley and his friends play soccer at Marley's home, Island House,
>in Kingston. Fazal adored Marley, Michael Prendergast said.
>
>Prendergast had started making techno music and had recorded two albums
>in his Guerneville studio. He was also developing a new style of music
>called "razz," a hybrid of reggae and jazz
>
>"Every day when I would come home from work, he'd have a different track,"
>McGeough said. "Some of it was reggae and some was not reggae. He also
>had an album that we co-produced that had been in the works since 1995.
>It's called 'Shadows in the Storm.' It's his most beautiful work.
>
>"Fazal was a perfectionist with his music. He was a professional. He tried
>to maintain that standard within reggae music. So many times, musicians don't
>get paid. He wanted to form a union. Fazal wouldn't take a show, even if he
>wanted it, if it didn't pay his musicians well."
>
>McGeough said she plans to finish his albums. The support of friends and
family,
>as well as her belief that Prendergast is now free, she said, are helping her
>move forward.
>
>"He will be missed," McGeough said. "Fazal is on a liberated plane, with all

Greetings,
New Dub Reggae Songs http://www.mp3.com/mindseyedub
Two new wicked tracks for you to enjoy!!!!
UNTITLED - DUB PLATE and UNTITLED - mp3 mix.
One Love
Mind's Eye.
Thanks for keeping Mind's Eye on top. Nuff respect.
Greetings,
Two new tracks has just been uploaded at
http://www.mp3.com/mindseyedub named "Morant Bay Rebellion"
and "Mystic".
"Morant Bay Rebellion" - a typical MIND'S EYE melodica anthem - is a
tribute to the two Jamaican freedom fighters Paul Bogle and George
William Gordon who were hanged after the Morant Bay Rebellion of
1865. "Mystic" has less melodica melodies but more dynamic dub
effects - a true dub reggae tour de force! Still available are 9
other downloadable tracks and the MIND'S EYE debut CD. Enjoy!
One Love
Mind's Eye

link up with the foundation to establish the best
time.

some uncut audio from the DV cam is running on
the dub zone stream http://streamola.com -
direct link - http://209.73.37.201:1142/listen.pls (24kbps)
The dance ran well, but as ever, the timing
was a little whack, peaking really after a fair
proportion of the crowd had already left,
there were 'technical difficulties'..
But the actual session was well on.
Hopefully, an awoah-yu-learn situation.
The theme of the night was 'No Apology'
Many objectives were achieved.
1. Ari meet Kush & Humble.
2. Humble meet Kush & Ari
3. Kush meet Ari & Humble.
4. Kush and the Brooklyn crew learn a bit about dance runnings
5. Brooklyn get a taste of the power of the Wildfiyah.
6. Humble himself feel the power of the Wildfiyah to
affect Brooklyn, if he bring his full kit..
7. Ari, who is dancehall-hip-hop minded, had assured Kush she
could do roots, and did somewhat tentatively try her new songs on the roots
rhythms, but hit her stride with 'None Can Escape The Judgement' and it
is only when Kush start fling the warrior that
she really let-off and freestyle, an emotional lament
about her killed baby father. Vivien Goldman did some harmony.
9. Leesaw from http://www.hypertunez.com did a great job with the
slide projection. Really warm the room.
9. Big up to the Japan Girl Posse for running the gate, and compliments to the
ital chef.
10. Next dance set for Jan 19 I believe.
there will be some clips up on punkcast directly
a couple more flyers were printed up, see
http://geocities.com/ras_kush/
Kush has a voice-mail line. # is on the flyer. 917-425-4794 - which can be used
to message him directly.
He does read his email - link on the page.

new flyer i have printed up
http://geocities.com/ras_kush/dubdance.gif
it's printed double-sided with the latest Swim one, laminated bookmark style as
usual. give thanks to sis leesaw for design.
again email to joly@... with the USPS info for copies -
subject=dubdance_flyer
other news on the dance is that kush is sharing the night with some d'n'b crew
who originally booked the room.. who will be running early I think, so
11pm is real start. I'd advise an early evening nap...
Family is in the Williamsburg area - quite cabbable from Manhattan.....
http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Pyt=Tmap&addr=282+broadway&city=Brooklyn&state=\
NY&slt=40.708500&sln=-73.958700&name=&zip=11211-6215&country=us&BFCat=&BFClient=\
&mag=9&desc=&cs=9&newmag=10
kush says the BQE flyover nearby makes him think of the aklam..
ari has confirmed that she, in her ja persona - medussa - will be in the
'special guest' roster.
kush is hoping to get the man 'Blessed' with whom he has recently recorded.
members of the brooklyn crew insisted that Wildfiyah be billed as (UK) -
apparently Humble has already had some impact in the neighborhood..
There will be some space - the dub market - for merchandise,
records, arts and crafts selling runnings, etc. I'm not sure
about the refreshments situation..
I intend to record and stream later..
Kush has a voice-mail line. # is on the flyer. 917-325-4794 - which can be
checked for last-minute announces.
He does read his email - link on the page..
