Hi,

My name is Leo Vidigal and I'm the editor of Massive Reggae, a brazilian
on-line magazine about Jah rhythm. Augustus Pablo was one of my favorite
reggae artists and I felt very bad when read the sad news about his
passing. So I've made a tribute to the great man and musician, just in
Portuguese for a while (I think it's the only one in my language in the
whole world). I'll publish an English version of this page soon.

If you want to check it out, please go to
http://www.globalsite.com.br/massive/pablo.htm .

You can check the English version (just two articles until today) o fthe
site at http://www.globalsite.com.br/massive .

Comments and suggestions would be appreciated.

Peace,

AUGUSTUS PABLO (1953 - 1999)

The latest death to send shock waves through the reggae world
is the passing of melodica and rockers king Augustus Pablo.
Pablo was a gentle giant in Jamaican music, repsonsible for
some of the loveliest and dreadest music of the 1970s. A
pioneer of the "Far East Sound", Pablo's minor key instrumentals
are as memorable as they are terrific. Whether acting as a
performer or producer, Pablo gave off an ethereal vibe that will
surely be missed. While preparing a Pablo tribute for my radio
show, Soul Shakedown Party, I took a serious listen to Classic
Rockers, an Island collection of Pablo productions and was
blown away by the grooves that I had previously overlooked. I
really need to hear a lot more of this man's work - ironic and sad
that it took his death to finally have that effect on me. Pablo and
our hero Scratch did a fair amount of work together, perhaps
most notably the awesome "Vibrate On" and the unmistakable
melodica riff on Junior Byles' "A Place Called Africa". For a more
complete retrospective of his life and work, check out Teacher
and Mr. T's excellent Reggae Vibes site.

A Place Called Africa - Junior Byles
also versioned as Dub From Africa and Africa Stand
     (Dennis Alcapone)
Vibrate On - Augustus Pablo Meets The Upsetter
also versioned as Vibrator, Ashes & Dust (Lee Perry), and
     Reggae Music (Dr. Alimantado)
Babylon Thief Dub - The Upsetters
dub cut of Police & Thieves with melodica
Hot & Cold Version - Augustus Pablo & The Upsetters
version of Fever (Junior Byles / Susan Cadogan)
Golden Seal, Upful Living - Augustus Pablo
both recorded at the Black Ark, produced by Pablo
Theme From Hong Kong, Hold Them Kung Fu,
     Scorching Iron - The Upsetters
all from Kung Fu Meets The Dragon

The above list is based on a survey of my own collection and is
therefore quite incomplete. If anyone has additions or
corrections, please e-mail me <mailto:sleeper@...> so that I
can put a new listing online in July.

I have been engaged in a discussion with my local chapter of ISOC
(Internet Society) about right-to-link and other IRP issues. I was
able to use this The Times obit to leverage a question about whether
such restrictions are in the public interest or not, didn't get a good
answer I'm afraid.

It does seem ridiculous that The Times can issue an erroneous obit,
and then forbid me from linking to it for purposes of discussion,
quoting from it, or forwarding it to the man's family.

There was a court case in Holland last week that the Scientologists
won against someone who merely linked to something they didn't like.
The first such precedent, I think.

Sorry to intrude again but we've finished the Junior Braithwaite tribute
site. The site includes a biography, a complete songography with every
song Junior performed on, sound clips, an interview with Roger Steffens and
more. Please visit it at:
http://nelson.olm.net/jb.html

There is a lot of false facts being circulated about Junior and his death
but hopefully this site will right those wrongs.

If you have a web site, there's a small picture link to place on your site,
if you choose to do so.

Speaking of Roger Steffens, this tribute site wouldn't have been possible
without his gracious help! His interview of Junior from 1985 is quite
possibly the only interview with Junior Braithwaite ever and is quite in
depth. Roger is also responsible for the compiling of the songs that
Junior sang on with The Wailers. Many thanks to him!!!

Be safe...

Dear Joly,

Thank you for your e-mail of 26th May 1999. Although we appreciate your
reasons for wanting to link to this article there are a number of reasons we
do not permit this. Principally the link includes your user code, thus
intended for the personal use of one individual. Your link allows any user
into our site using your code, thus bypassing the registration process which
is very important to our site. Another problem is that the link brings up
the story outside of the frames which would appear if the user had entered
via our main page; this effectively alters the design of the page and
removes our identity and navigation tools.

Linking this way is also a breach of clauses 5 and 6 of our standard terms
and conditions which can be viewed on our registration page at
http://www.the-times.co.uk/registration2f.html or via the link at the
bottom of each story on our sites.

You will therefore only be able to direct your visitors to our Registration
page and provided you mention no more than the title and reproduction date
of our obituary and where they can view it there should be no problem.

However if you want to reproduce the obituary on your website please let us
know how many hit's you receive per month and what context will the obituary
be used in for approval.

Once we have the above relevant information we will check the copyright and
let you know if permission is granted. Please note that we charge for the
use of our articles in electronic form IF permission is granted. Please let
us know if you wish us to pursue the matter.

We look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

Yours sincerely

Dub Godfather Augustus Pablo Dead
Influential dub producer/musician Augustus Pablo died on May 18, in
Kingston, Jamaica,
after a struggle with the nerve disorder myasthe-nia
gravis. Pablo, 46, was a keyboardist for Bob
Marley and worked with such artists as Lee
"Scratch" Perry, Jimmy Cliff and Israel Vibration.
Pablo's groundbreaking reggae instrumentals
made albums such as 1976's King Tubby Meets Rock-ers
Uptown and 1981's East Of The River Nile undis-puted
classics of the genre. Reverbed drums,
echoed vocals and the melodica (his trademark
instrument) defined Pablo's pioneering sound.
Pablo, born Horace Swaby, inherited his stage
name when its originator, Upsetters keyboardist
Glen Adams, moved to the U.S. in 1971; Adams
also left the melodica in Swaby's custody. Swaby
then immersed himself in the early-'70s Jamaican
music scene, and released singles on his own
Rockers imprint.
Though he reached his creative peak in the
late '70s, Pablo's influence spreads over two
decades and can be heard in the music of The
Clash, Gang Of Four, Massive Attack, Sublime,
Tricky and others. Pablo released his last
record, Valley Of Jehosophat, on RAS Records ear-lier
this year.

I kicked it off with the 'Presents DJ's .." CD on Big Cat.
I have encoded that plus the pablo track off of Jesus Dread,
(had a little prob with the latter - my cd is beat up already)
then I dug around and found the 'Heartical Chart' CD so I
encoded that. I think I have to redo track 12 (ethiopian high).
Very good album that.

So that's the basic prog as of this time. However.

Today I received a big parcel of recent 'Echo Chamber' shows
from Dr Strangedub of KFAI, so I am piping them into the stream as I
check them out. Right now 6pm EST I'm on their 'Bob/Tubby tribute'
- playlist is on

after some meditation I think augustuspablo.org

What a sad week in world of dub and Jamaican reggae -- the great dubmaster and
melodica player extraordinaire, Augustus Pablo died suddenly this week at the
age of 46. Details were still sketchy when we went on the air, but the word was
that Augustus had been rushed to the hospital in JA with a collapsed lung. We
later learned that Augustus Pablo (born Horace Swaby in 1953) had died from
complications due to the disease myasthenia gravis, a nerve disorder (this info
attributed to Augustus' brother Garth Swaby). With condolences to the Swaby
family, and all his friends and relatives, this show was dedicated to the late
great Augustus Pablo. May he enter the Gates of Zion....

Oh yeah, we also played a bunch of great roots dub......including Swiss' Pablo
tribute titled "Pablo's Last Stand." Finally, Dr. StangeDub put together a
special Dr. Strangelove/Dr. StrangeDub mix using: "Dr. StrangeDub (the Gammy
Leg Mix)" and "Heroes (Love, Crime, death Mix)" from the TurnTableTerrorist;
2 tracks from the "Dr. Strangelove" soundtrack; and choice bits of "Strangelove"
dialogue. "The string in my leg's gone......gammy leg...gone shot off!"
Hopefully Augustus enjoyed the proceedings...

Anyway, here's the playlist for May 20, 1999:

Pablo's date of birth was June 21, 1953. He would have been 46 next month.
I contacted the (NY) times on the day of the original obit. but did not see the
corrections. Was it done on the 25th? (the 21st)

The funeral is set for Sunday at 1pm, and I'll be heading to Jamaica on
saturday. I will be travelling as of tomorrow as I have a stop to make before I
get to Kingston, so will not have access my email until I get

**PRE-AMBLE - CUT**

I have started up the Augustus Pablo memorial shoutcast feed.

Right now it's running off my soundcard which is
switched to a cd playing 'presents DJ's of the 60's and 70's'

(ooh it's skipping - gotta give it a wipe:)

I will get a basic ease'n'seckle encoded over the weekend.
meanwhile as I say below get those radio tapes coming in. I am also
looking for short but spectacular mp3's from you dubmeisters
to insert between tracks/shows. Whatever bitrate/format you like
- i'll deal with it.

Matter doesn't have to be absolutely pablo, but in the spirit,
the idea being to use his passing to leverage his whole style/
outlook..

Claudia!

What I need from you is a name, email
address and tel no to register as owner of the
site. I would suggest your name, but using
your personal lawyer or the estate's lawyers address
and phone number, to maintain privacy.

If I don't hear from you. I will go ahead and get it in your
name and my POBox and phone. Should be able to have
augustuspablo.com up by the time you get back.

we shall have to look at finding a mirror site in jamaica,
so that people there can access it easily. It is also
possible to encode a site as an addition to a cd..
interested to hear what the word is on the net in Jamdown..

After Augustus Pablo died, several people posted
informal tributes to the Usenet, including myself.

We were pleased to get a response from his sister,
via her aol account.

I exchanged email with her, and it was apparent she was not
too familiar with the net itself. I observed also that there
was no single homepage dedicated to the man and his works.

Of my own initiative I formed an ad-hoc group to look into
constructing some kind of public net memorial on behalf of
his family and fans. His sister has done us the honor of
joining. The group communicates via an open and
public mailing list hosted at onelist.com, the archive is
freely viewable by all comers at
http://www.onelist.com/viewarchive.cgi?listname=apablo

It came to my attention today that The Times published an
obituary on May 20. keenly aware of your stated restrictions
on quoting and linking I posted message#1 below to the list.

On another list (on-u) it was pointed out
1) the obit was loaded with inaccuracies (message#2 below)
2) had no byline
3) could be directly linked to using
<I quoted the link>

I surmise that link would still require an installed cookie to
be of any use.

I thus enquire:

1) Could I get permission to post that direct link to the list?
2) Does The Times intend to correct the inaccuracies?
3) How would we set about getting permission to include a (corrected)
version of that obituary on the proposed 'memorial' web site.

Thanking you for your attention. I remain

Yours faithfully

Joly

I did get this as a tip from the on-u list, where someone else
has pointed out that the obit has several inaccuracies, so I quote:

> AUGUSTUS PABLO
> Augustus Pablo, dub and reggae performer, died of a muscular
> disease in Jamaica on May 18 aged 44. He was born on June
> 21, 1952.

and in the second para:

> One day in 1969, the 15-year-old Horace Swaby...

I am yet to write to The Times, you can be sure I will suggest
they to print a correction.

Can you confirm Date of Birth, Claudia?

I also note that NY Times printed a correction to their May 20
obit the next day May 21 (anyone got a copy?), it starts:

> Corrections
> An obituary headline yesterday about a reggae musician misspelled his given
> name, and the article omitted a survivor. The musician was Augustus Pablo, not
> Augusto. Survivors include his brother Mark Swaby. ...

This would explain why my own initial searches of the NYTimes for
an obit drew a blank.

An obituary was published in Tuesday's London Times, with
a photo.

Unfortunately, as a subscriber to the online edition of that
newspaper I am bound by good faith not to reproduce it here,
and it is not possible to directly link to it..

In order to read one must
1) Go to http://www.the-times.co.uk/
2) get registered and logged in (it's free)
3) go to the front page
4) click on 'Back Issues' on the menu bar
5) this brings up the resources page - click 1) back issues
6) In the 'view issues' selector set the date to 25th May 1999
7) On the next page click 'proceed'
8) click on 'obituaries' on the left menu bar
9) click on 'Augustus Pablo, dub and reggae performer'
10) you are permitted under the Times 'user terms and conditions' to
make a copy on your computer solely for the purpose of printing out
a hard copy.

I have written to the Times asking if we can gain permission to
use it on a 'memorial site' should we get one started.

Note: that on that page there is also an obit for Rob Gretton,
manager of Joy Division/New Order, he was a good friend of mine.

What a sad week in world of dub and Jamaican reggae -- the great dubmaster
and melodica player extraordinaire, Augustus Pablo died suddenly this week
at the age of 46. Details were still sketchy when we went on the air, but
the word was that Augustus had been rushed to the hospital in JA with a
collapsed lung. We later learned that Augustus Pablo (born Horace Swaby
in 1953) had died from complications due to the disease myasthenia gravis,
a nerve disorder (this info attributed to Augustus' brother Garth Swaby).
With condolences to the Swaby family, and all his friends and relatives,
this show was dedicated to the late great Augustus Pablo. May he enter
the Gates of Zion....

Oh yeah, we also played a bunch of great roots dub......including Swiss'
Pablo tribute titled "Pablo's Last Stand." Finally, Dr. StangeDub put
together a special Dr. Strangelove/Dr. StrangeDub mix using: "Dr.
StrangeDub (the Gammy Leg Mix)" and "Heroes (Love, Crime, death Mix)" from
the TurnTableTerrorist; 2 tracks from the "Dr. Strangelove" soundtrack;
and choice bits of "Strangelove" dialogue. "The string in my leg's
gone......gammy leg...gone shot off!" Hopefully Augustus enjoyed the
proceedings...

Anyway, here's the playlist for May 20, 1999:

What can you say when some one as influential and original as
Augustus Pablo dies. I remember the first reggae tape I ever
made, about twenty years ago, started with Brace a boy.
Ever since he has been one of my favourites. His immediatly
recognizable sound as a keyboard and especially melodica
player (I think he was the greatest melodica player in the
world, nobody can play the melodica as fluent as Pablo could)
his early work at Aquarius and Randy's, his collaboration
with King Tubby and his talent as a talent scout, one can
mention a lot of things that show the magnitude of Augustus
Pablo. But there are two things I love most about Augustus
Pablo. First his collaboration with Lee Perry in the Black
Ark. A Black Ark recording is always immediatly recognizable,
but Pablo gave the recordings he worked on a special sound.
Not only as a session musician (Kung Fu meets the dragon,
Vibrate on for example) but also when Scratch gave him time
to do his own thing. Songs like Let's get together, Why do
black man fuss and fight, One in the spirit or Upfull living
are among my all time favourites. Second I think Pablo is the
only producer (or at least one of a few) who could take a
Studio One riddim and do something extra with it. I think,
for example, his version of Love won't come easy really
sounds better than the original from Studio One.

I was lucky enough to see Pablo perform two times. The first
time was maybe ten or twelve years ago, the second only a few
years. Both times he looked very ill, but when he played the
melodica you forgot all about it and just enjoyed his sound.

I give thanks for all the musical pleasure Augustus Pablo
gave me the last twenty years and will give me the rest of my
life.
